19 Working Class People Share What They Wish The Upper Class Could Understand

1. That when you say you’re broke you really are. They always think you must have some money. I find my middle class friends and family will always assume I can come out for a meal or to socialise when I tell them I’m out of cash. I guess middle class people always have some savings and aren’t checking the back of the sofa for loose change.

2. That not everyone is poor because they’re lazy or stupid or just didn’t try hard enough. There’s this deeply embedded belief in our country that poor people somehow deserve to be poor, and it’s amazing to me how blindly people believe this.

My parents have worked my entire life, often more than one job at a time. When I was in high school both my parents had two jobs, and we could still barely afford stuff. And it’s not because they’re lazy, that’s for damn sure. It’s not because they’re dumb, either. It’s because shit fucking happens sometimes, man. It’s been nearly the same for me.

My husband and I are much better off financially than we were a few years ago, thanks to a lot of hard work, but we’re still not even middle class, just living paycheck to paycheck and some months, having to sell something to buy groceries. My husband had a second job delivering pizzas for a while, just to make ends meet. I’ve seen for myself how insanely difficult it is to get out of debt and get ahead.

Literally every time I’ve managed to get a little money in the bank, something happens like a car breaking down or someone having to go to the hospital, and wipes it all out. Shit’s hard and being poor sucks. I’m never going to be rich; the best I can hope for is to eventually be comfortable. And it’s not because I’m fucking lazy.

As much as everyone dearly loves the whole “hard work will make you rich!” line, I’m sorry, it’s not really true. Yes, hard work is a huge component, BUT, so is luck, and a million other things you have no control over. Christ, just look at how many people got fucked over during the economic recession. That had nothing to do with how hard they did or didn’t work.

3. Knowing that falling sick and losing a weeks’ pay would cause financial burden that would take weeks, if not months to recover from.

That is fear.

4. I showed up at work once with walking pneumonia because I couldn’t afford to be off a single day, and couldn’t afford the insurance my company offered. My boss asked me why in hell I came to work, and I told him honestly — I can’t afford to not be here.

He made me go home, but paid me for the day. Problem is, I lost my OT that week because sick/vacation time doesn’t count the same. 36 hours + 8 hours sick time = 44 hours of straight pay. I ate two packs of ramen a day for two weeks because of that.

5. The feeling of the check engine light coming on and knowing that the repairs will likely cost more than you have to your name.

6. I got paid today. Checked my balance just like I do every morning, all good. I stop to get gas on my way to work, splurge and buy a Pepsi. I swipe my card, enter my PIN, and stare at it with this sinking feeling that it won’t go through. When it does I feel an incredible sense of relief that, today at least, I don’t have to feel like a piece of crap.

People who have never had this issue don’t understand that, when you’ve lived with no money, even when you do get some, you still expect it to not be there.

7. That the system is heavily geared against people who do not have money. Not having money costs significantly more than having money, making it even harder to get by.

You and I could have the exact same life expenses, but if my income or life circumstances have not allowed me to build up savings and I am living paycheck to paycheck (or worse), it is costing me significantly more in the form of NSF fees ($100 a pop in most cases), re-connection charges, gas/bus fare/time to make several small trips to the grocery store instead of one or two big ones, interest (got lots of money? have a car at 0%; have no money? 29%), bank fees (banks charge monthly fees to those of us who don’t have a bunch of money in savings with them, then add more fees on top of that for services people with money get free), and so on.

Want to avoid one of these? It will cost you more money. Payday loan charges that cost more than the NSF fee you’re avoiding so you can cover a utility bill because if you miss one more payment you’ll have to pay off your bill completely before getting reconnected, plus a $200 re-connection charge, plus a $1000 security deposit.

To top it all off, being in this situation is stressful – extremely so if you have a family – leading a majority into starting or increasing drinking and/or smoking and/or drugs, which costs even MORE money, or depression, which causes a host of other problems including possibly losing their job.

It is a vicious cycle to break, possible only by extreme self-sacrifice (I know of a mother of 4 who lived in a tiny trailer far out of town with no car, everybody in one bedroom, 10km walk to school, 20km walk to store, no electricity, no heat – sleeping in winter jackets and gloves when it is -20C outside [and inside], etc.), a huge infusion of cash to pay things off and break the cycle (plus help to keep from falling back into it), or bankruptcy (which, as the ultimate FUCK YOU joke, many people in serious debt CANNOT AFFORD TO DO, since bankruptcy requires a minimum monthly payment, and if you include things like utility bills then you have to pay massive deposits to get service again).

8. If you slip even once, you might as well be starting over with nothing. Even with a large influx of cash, it costs more to get out of debt than the amount that got you in debt in the first place, which a lot of people don’t understand.

How can you owe someone $900 when your original bill was $400? Well, because they can slap on a few late fees and then charge interest on the increased amount. People want debtors to remain in debt. They make far more money when people can’t pay their bills, ironically.

9. That having the “right” attitude can only take you so far and that being poor becomes so incredibly complicated when you’re dealing with mental health issues and personal issues brought on by finances.

It feels like my family and I will never get to feel true safety in a good neighborhood and just what it feels like to have fun doing carefree activities like traveling, going out to eat somewhere, casually deciding to see a movie. We’re all just frozen in time trying to catch up and it’s taken a toll on everyone’s happiness.

10. My family immigrated to Canada more than three decades ago. We were political refugees and my parents had nothing beside what they were wearing. It took more than a decade of sacrifices before they could save enough money to start a small business.

They had to take a huge loan from the bank. The first two years were incredibly difficult. For example, my parents had to work on average 16 hours everyday including the weekends and the holidays. Eventually, it paid off but the risk taken was extremely high. We had relatives and friends who started similar businesses and some of them had to file for bankruptcy only after three to four years.

Breaking the cycle of poverty can be a daunting task. Even if you try your best, it might not even work. This is one of the reasons why I am disappointed when one of my coworkers or classmates (none of them had to grow up in poverty) belittle and judge poor people without knowing their personal background.

11. My coworker (who works because she wants to) says the upper classes shouldn’t have to pay more tax because they worked hard to get where they are so they shouldn’t be penalized for the lazy lower class people. I said the lazy lower class people like me that work three jobs to make ends meet? I should pay more taxes so you can spend more time in Europe each year?

12. A day off work to most people is a fun day to relax. To a poor person it’s the difference between having money to pay all of this weeks expenses and having to forgo one, then you’re a month behind on one bill and have to find the overtime somewhere to cover it or else shuffle other bills around the next month. Then the cycle continues. Several days off work could lead to a loss of a car, or your home.

I’ve been there, it’s horrible. I lost count of the number of times I went to work running a fever and feeling horrible just because I knew if I didn’t my family would not eat.

13. Human problems don’t necessarily equate to character problems. That person with a spot on his or her record, or a substance abuse issue, or depression, or a lot of sheer frustration, may never have gotten to that point if they’d had the same opportunities, contacts, safety nets etc. that you may have had. Most likely, they’re expending more energy than you imagine just to stay afloat.

14. Trying to save money is the worst. I am not anywhere near being homeless, my bills are paid there is food in the fridge and a roof over my head but after that’s all said and done I’m generally broke. My car recently blew its head gasket which means I need to replace the engine/fix it/ or get a new car…Getting a new car isn’t an option since I still owe in this one so it is a new engine or bust.

Trying to save for this is almost impossible right now as I still need 1000 bucks essentially to cover it. My fiance and I have been sharing her car (which is probably growing tiresome for her since she is sacrificing some of her freedom during the day) which means I go to work when she does and I pick her up when she is done. This is losing me a few hours if pay a week as I can’t skip my lunch break to make up time so I’m sucking up every minute on the clock I can before I have to pick her up. I’m thoroughly grateful that sharing a car is even an option but it’ll be alot better when I can get my car back up and running.

15. I cannot just “save” money. I do not have anything left at the end of the month. No, I don’t eat out. No, I don’t buy frivolous things. I pay bills and buy bread. So, no, I can’t save up.

So many people who are well off always tell me “It’s so important to save up. Make sure you have a few thousand saved for emergencies!”

Yeah, I’d love to, but I literally cannot. I would have to go without food or gas or a home in order to save. No, I cannot even save a dollar. I have to use it. No, I’m not trying to be difficult, I’m being serious.

It seems to be SO hard for people who don’t struggle to understand.

16. I’m middle class now, but I still function with a poor/working class mindset — I think at a certain point it’s just burned in. If you’ve never had to literally rummage through your entire home to find enough change to get on the subway/bus/give someone a few bucks for gas, then you’ll probably never quite understand what, “I don’t have any money means.” Saying that and then hearing “Dude it’s only 10 bucks!” means they can’t comprehend it. (and I’m sensitive to the fact that we’re talking about American ‘poor’ — not insinuating that somehow that’s the global standard of poverty)

17. Things that are necessary, that you pay extra money for? They pay for those things in time. You paid extra for a car to drive to work. It takes you say, 20 mins to get there, 20 mins back. They pay 5 bucks a day to take the bus, which takes them an hour to travel the same distance, and an hour back. Not counting the time they spend just waiting for the bus.

So, every month, assuming they are lucky enough to work full time, they spend $100 and lose 40 hours to transportation alone. That is an entire extra week of work per month to just get to work.

18. My work shoes are a pair of black trainers I got at a thrift store. They are falling apart. They leak. They give me blisters. I work 16+ hour shifts on my feet. But I can’t afford better, comfy shoes that will last because they require a lump sum of money up front. So instead I end up buying cheap shoes every couple of months I walk through them.

Quality costs money, and poor people don’t have money, so in order to survive we just consume shit and make do until it breaks and then get the cheapest deal we can because new trainers are a luxury even at a fiver. We feel guilt for buying it even though it’s essential.

19. Telling someone to work hard, doesn’t mean they can escape their situation. There are cleaners on minimum wage that work harder, and longer, than 99% of the population, but they’re still on minimum wage, so can barely cover the rent.

We’re all in a hurry, it seems. The pace of life has increased and rushing through our days—through our lives—has now become the norm. We want everything now; happiness now, success now, health now, love now. Not surprisingly, this is the way we approach our goals and life changes as well. Patience is hard to come by: we expect results now, and if we haven’t reached our goal yet, it must be because we’re not working hard enough or fast enough or we’re lazy and undisciplined.

Hard work and discipline are certainly valuable traits when trying to make changes in our lives or attain important goals, however, even diligence and persistence are often not enough to get the results we’re looking for. The lack of an effective strategy is often our greatest obstacle. In our impatience for results, we try to change too much at once, and expect too much of ourselves, and this impatience usually leads to frustration and failure. This is why most people fail to keep their New Year’s resolutions.

Sometimes we don’t even take the first step because our dreams, goals, and desires seem so overwhelming, so intimidating, and so unachievable that we give up before we even start. Maybe we just need to try a different strategy. I’m reminded of the popular saying, “Life is a marathon, not a sprint.” That same philosophy can be applied when we’re attempting to make changes in our lives: it’s true of career advancement or building a business, educational goals, weight loss or fitness, organization, habits, and certainly when trying to build or change relationships.

Learn to take baby steps

This may be the simplest, yet the most effective strategy we can use, as consistency, and learning to build on small victories are the keys to success. The happiest and most successful people will tell you that they have achieved their level of life and work success by taking small steps, and making one positive choice after another.

Look for the mini victories

What is a mini victory? A mini victory is a realistic, quickly-achievable, smaller portion of a larger objective. This bite-size goal will vary depending upon our specific intention, time frame, and motivation. The reason this strategy works is because we are able to see tangible progress, rather quickly, so we feel a sense of accomplishment and are encouraged to move on to our next mini goal, using the small successes as stepping-stones to larger change.

A Few Answers To Questions You Always Wondered About

Was Roseanne’s First Ammendement Rights Violated?

In a since-deleted tweet, Roseanne Barr referred to former President Obama advisor Valerie Jarrett as “product  of the Muslim Brotherhood and the Planet of the Apes”.

Some have questioned Barr’s firing, saying she is protected by the First Amendment to say whatever she wants. While Barr has a right to say whatever she wants, she also has the responsibility to deal with the consequences of the things she says, and ABC also has the right to fire her.

First of all, this is in no way a free-speech or First Amendment issue. The First Amendment protects us from facing consequences from the government over our speech, not consequences from our peers or our employers. Yes, what Barr said, although abhorrent, absolutely was constitutionally protected speech, and, of course, it should be. After all, giving the government the power to decide what is and is not “acceptable” speech would be giving the government the power to silence whatever kind of speech it felt like silencing, which would be very dangerous indeed. Anyway, the point is, a free-speech-rights violation would be someone trying to, say, arrest Barr for her comments, not firing her for them. Her rights were in no way violated in this case. ABC simply exercised its own rights as a private company to decide whom it does and does not want to associate with, and it’s my view that no one should blame its executives for making the decision that they made.

Imagine you stood up in your office and yelled what Barr tweeted. You would certainly get reprimanded, and would probably get fired.

“Free speech” does not mean you get to say anything without any repercussions in society. The government cannot impose penalties on you, but your peers can by maintaining social norms that make it socially unacceptable—shameful, even—to behave in that way. You can’t lose your liberty, but you can lose your friends and your livelihood. The Constitution doesn’t protect your popularity.

You may recognize this argument because many of the same people who now say Barr was just exercising her free speech rights are singing a different tune when they see (primarily black and brown) NFL players protesting during the national anthem. As employees of the league, critics say, these men can be punished (or, in the cases of Colin Kaepernick and Eric Reid, can be blackballed by all 32 teams) for expressing themselves in a way that could hurt their company’s reputation with fans or the bottom line.

In truth, the argument applies in both cases: ABC and the NFL can both fire employees for their speech if they think it’s alienating customers. The only difference is that ABC fired someone for free speech that was racist. NFL players are protesting racial injustice in policing and the criminal justice system, but their opponents suggest they are disrespecting The Flag or The Anthem or the armed forces.

Could a modern US battalion and a few planes have won D-Day alone?

Nope, nope, noooooooope, and NOPE.

Don’t get me wrong, a modern day infantry battalion is leaps and bounds more combat effective than a WW2 battalion. One on one, it would be a slaughter. Two to one it would still be a pitched battle. 3 to 1 and it would be slightly less desperate of a fight.

But D-Day? You really need to understand the scale that was the invasion of Normandy.

First off, people think of the Invasion of Normandy as if it was just that, an invastion of some beaches in a small part of France. It might have taken place in the beaches of Normandy, but make no mistake this was the invasion of Europe. Not Normandy. Not France. They came to Invade Europe. And they brought the tools to do just that.

The allied forces comprised more than 1.3 Million combatants for the invasion. Of that number, 150k soldiers were landed on D-day itself. These 150k soldiers landed on 5 beachheads, and were preceded by an airborne assault of 24,000 airborne troops. By D-Day +5 the allies had landed more than 320,000 troops and 50,000 vehicle.

So if we instead tried to land less than a thousand guys from one modern, up strengthed battalion what would it look like? They would get smeared. First, they would not be able to land on all 5 beaches. Pick one to die on. They could probably get ashore and manage to secure the beach. Then they would get pulverized by the German reinforcements and artillery once they were encircled and zeroed in.

See, Germany had more than 50,000 troops defending those beaches. Recall all those big numbers above about what the allies brought to this fight? Now put into perspective this little nugget of truth that is not often mentioned; the allies did not meet any of their goals by the end of the first day. What I mean is, their battle plans called for certain key locations to be secured by their assigned forces during the first day of the invastion, and not a single one of those forces achieved their day one objective. The Allies took 10,000 casualties that first day. It would take almost a week before all 5 beachheads could link up, and they outnumbered the German defenders 6 to 1. Now we are talking about a modern allied force attempting this battle but being outnumbered themselves 100 to 1. Not good odds.

Not unless one of those “few planes” is a B-52 with a few tactical nuclear warheads to throw around.

Edit:

I’m getting the impression some people reading this aren’t fully appreciating the scale of what is being asked. Let’s be clear in what we are talking about. Lets pick a batalion…

A typical US Army Mechanized Infantry Battalion consists of 5 company’s (each of roughly 100 soldiers in strength).

First you have a headquarters company. This will have your comand and logistics element, a scout platoon, a mortar platoon, and support platoon.

Next will be 4 maneuvering company’s. Optional one of these could be an air defense company, or if your battalion is being chopped up to form a task force, you might trade one of your company’s away for a company of armor. Anyway lets assume this battalion does not include an air defense company.

So your infantry company’s will be arranged in 4 platoons. A headquarters platoon, and 3 mechanized infantry platoons. Those 3 platoons are your main fighting force. They will each have 4 M-2 Bradley Fighting Vehicles, and 3 rifle squads. 4 pieces of light armor and 27 boots on the ground.

Roll that up and your main fire and manuever force consists of 48 BFVs and 324 infantry. Plus about 2 each additional M3 scout vehicles from the various HQ platoons, and 8 more pieces of light armor.

Supporting them is one platoon of mortars, one more of scouts, and then their support personal (supply, medics, utility vehicles)

An impressive amount of firepower for sure. But they are up against…… 50 THOUSAND defenders, with full division level artillary and armor. 1400 tanks and self propelled guns. At least 2 divisions on combat hardened airborn and mechanized infantry. Prepared defensive positions. The disparity in fire power is orders of magnitude.

How is Russia using disinformation to divide the West?

Example 1 – 2016 U.S. Presidential Election

A quick summary of Special Counsel Mueller’s indictment of 13 Russians and 3 Russian entities;[1]  Russian operatives used stolen US identities, traveled across 9 states collecting intelligence, discussed escape routes if they were caught inside the country, bought equipment including burner phones/SIM cards. This operation included hundreds of employees conducting information warfare during the election, it was funded with millions of dollars from the Kremlin. Russia was and is actively pushing propaganda and fake news to create a system that manipulates the narrative using social media sites as conduits for this endeavour. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein put it best when he said that Russia was waging information warfare.[2]

Russia’s geo-political aim is to weaken the West through destabilization by sowing division among the population.[3]  Russian operatives used social media to exploit racial and religious divisions during the 2016 election.[4] Democrats in the House Intelligence Committee released 3500 Facebook ads that were created by the Internet Research Agency, Russia specifically targeted racial tensions in America.[5]

  • Divisive racial ad buys averaged about 44 per month from 2015 through the summer of 2016 before seeing a significant increase in the run-up to Election Day. Between September and November 2016, the number of race-related spots rose to 400. An additional 900 were posted after the November election through May 2017.

Example 2 – Parkland School Shooting

Russia has been using social media sites as conduits to promote disinformation creating a system that manipulates the narrative. Russia has promoted disinformation campaigns to destabilize the West for quite some time[6]  – there is a historical precedence on the matter.[7]  A recent example would be the online aftermath of the Parkland school shooting tragedy. Russian bots flooded social media to sow discord by taking both sides of the gun control issue. They’re stoking political divisions across western nations.[8]

The bots are “going to find any contentious issue, and instead of making it an opportunity for compromise and negotiation, they turn it into an unsolvable issue bubbling with frustration,” said Karen North, a social media professor at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. “It just heightens that frustration and anger.”

…When the Russian bots jumped on the hashtag #Parklandshooting — initially created to spread news of the shooting — they quickly stoked tensions. Exploiting the issue of mental illness in the gun control debate, they propagated the notion that Nikolas Cruz, the suspected gunman, was a mentally ill “lone killer.” They also claimed that he had searched for Arabic phrases on Google before the shooting. Simultaneously, the bots started other hashtags, like #ar15, for the semiautomatic rifle used in the shooting, and #NRA.

Example 3 – Ukraine Conflict

This is the GRU modus operandi, we all saw the disinformation campaign to sow division during the Ukrainian conflict and their subsequent invasion of Crimea, they drummed up the disinformation campaign by promoting fake news depicting the Ukrainian government as fascists.[9]

Pretending to be ordinary Ukrainians, GRU operatives also tapped out comments aimed at riling up pro-Russian citizens against the protesters, whom they called “zapadentsy” — or “westerners.” One comment read: “Brigades of zapadentsy are now on their way to rob and kill us. It is very clear that these people hold nothing sacred.’’

…On Feb. 27, when the Crimean parliament building was seized, the GRU created four groups on Facebook and VK to encourage Crimeans to support secession from Ukraine. “Using our accounts on Facebook, we circulated commentaries informing the population of the Crimean peninsula of a threat from Nazi organizations,” the GRU reported.

The International Criminal Court declared Russia’s invasion of Ukraine a crime.[10]  We can’t forget the consequences of this conflict in Ukraine, including Russia’s role in the 298 deaths from a commercial airliner that was shot down over Ukraine.[11]  The European Commission has warned that Russia has been very successful at spreading disinformation across the European Union.[12]

Final Thoughts

Russia is actively trying to divide the West and has been for quite some time, be aware that they use inflammatory language online and promote disinformation.[13]  It can be frustrating when talking to those who share a different set of beliefs, but we should attempt to find common ground with those who believe in the pillars that make Western democracy so great – equity, representation, freedom, and justice. Yes there are institutional problems that need to be addressed and ultimately fixed and there are different views on how we can come to a solution on these institutional problems. But as it stands right now Western democracy and society is under assault and we must work together by staying informed and exercising our constitutional duty by voting in elections in our respective countries.

Former Police Detective Reveals How To Tell When Suspects are Lying

police interrogation

Law enforcement can tell when suspects are lying, usually beginning with an initial 911 call or first interview.

“The 911 call and initial statements are among the most important pieces of evidence should a case go to trial,” said Stacy Dittrich, a former Ohio police detective, crime expert and author. “The entire case can build from those few sentences.”

Here are the most tell-tale signs, revealed.

A pre-emptive 911 call: Criminals sometimes call police very early to cover their bases. For instance, a man with a missing spouse might call police within a couple hours to say something is wrong. “The first question the detective is asking is why they’re assuming something is wrong because not getting ahold of someone right away is pretty normal,” Dittrich said.

The emotions don’t fit: even if what a suspect is saying on the call appears to be true, their tone is a big tip-off to police, Dittrich said. For instance, a calm demeanor while reporting a home invasion could indicate something is amiss because “most people are hysterical in that kind of situation.”

Not answering “yes” or “no”: an innocent person will usually answer questions with a direct yes or no. Not so for criminals, says Dittrich. When asked “are you involved in this murder?” they are likely to give a long answer like “I swear on my mother’s grave and all my children I didn’t.” This is a way of stalling: even though they tell themselves to lie, they can’t quite follow through.

Too many details: A criminal usually carefully plans their story in advance, anticipating that they’ll eventually speaks with detectives. A 911 call with too many details about the suspect, such as what they did that day or whether they’re happy with their significant other, is a red flag because it shows the person put thought into his or her story.

Lying about small stuff: Even the most innocuous statements can reveal inconsistencies, Dittrich said. A suspect talk of watching a television show in his or her alibi statement, but the show didn’t air that night. Lies about small stuff usually culminate in bigger evidence against the accused.

Referring to a missing person in past-tense: Most people hold out hope that their missing loved one will be found alive. Referring to a person in past tense, saying “I really loved her” or “he and I were happily married,” is incriminating, Dittrich said.

Saying “huh?” : When police ask a direct question, such as “Did you steal those items?” a guilty suspect will often pretend not to hear in order to stall and come up with a story, Dittrich said. Instead of answering a very direct question they say “huh?” or “what do you mean?” Dittrich said.

Helpfully offering another explanation: a suspect will often try and mislead detectives by putting another suspicious person on the investigation’s radar, Dittrich said. If a person denies a kidnapping but mentions a creepy man in a van, it’s important to see if there’s any other evidence of such a person existing. If there’s not, chances are the suspect made up a story to deflect the blame.

Most criminals destroy themselves with their own statements. The ones who are acquitted despite ample evidence are “sociopathic” enough to convince themselves that the lies are reality, Dittricht told us, citing Casey Anthony, the infamous Florida mother acquitted of murdering her daughter.

“It’s haunting because the people who get away are the ones deranged enough to believe their own lies,” Dittrich said.

Confessions Of Daryl Davis. A Black Musician Who Convinced Hundreds Of Ku Klux Klan Members To Give Up Their Robes

daryl davis

Daryl Davis is a blues musician, but he also has what some might call an interesting hobby. For the past 30 years, Davis, a black man, has spent time befriending members of the Ku Klux Klan.

He says once the friendship blossoms, the Klansmen realize that their hate may be misguided. Since Davis started talking with these members, he says 200 Klansmen have given up their robes. When that happens, Davis collects the robes and keeps them in his home as a reminder of the dent he has made in racism by simply sitting down and having dinner with people.

What was your motivation to get started with this?

I was motivated by the racism I would encounter. I love people, I love my country. I have been to 53 countries around the world on 6 continents and I’ve seen different people get along in most of them. I know the United States can be a better place and we all have an obligation to making our society a better place not just for ourselves but for all Americans. I am just doing my part.

What do you think is the most common reason people join hate groups like the KKK in the first place?

There are many different reasons. It depends on the circumstances. Some join because: “My grandfather was in the Klan, my Daddy was in the Klan, so I’m in the Klan, and my son will be in the Klan.

Others, who may never have been racist to begin with, get laid off of their jobs and can barely make rent or feed their family, see their same job now being done by someone who does not look like them (perhaps an Hispanic immigrant). The Klan exploits this opportunity to convince them to join becacause: “The Blacks have the NAACP, the Jews have the ADL. No one stands up for the White man except the Klan. Come join us and we’ll get your jobs back. We are not going to let spics and niggers take over our country.”

Yet others join because the environment in which they live, is conducive to that mentality and in order to get along with your neighbors, you join the local societal groups, garden club, PTA, KKK, etc.

What is the general reaction when you tell them you’re black? Do they know when you first talk to them, or is it much later in the conversation?

Initially, I would meet with them in person and they would have no idea that I am Black. My White secretary would phone them and set up the interview, specifically not mentioning the color of my skin unless asked. No one asked. There was shock and surprise. In a couple of cases, there was some violence. But most people, after getting over the surprise, would either talk with me or say they were not interested and walk away. Today, they all know the color of my skin. So when I inquire about an interview, they can decide over the phone or email, whether or not they want to meet with me.

What do you usually talk to them about when you first meet? What type of language do you use and how do you respond when they say something racist?

We talk about everything and I let them know right off the bat, that I want them to be themselves and not to tailor their language or responses to my questions so as not to offend me. Of course I hear ALL the racist words. Sometimes they use them to get a reaction out of me. But, I already know I’m going to hear these things. I come into the situation armed with knowledge about them and how they thing. So I don’t react at all. I have even had some apologize to me after my not reacting. It’s always best to take political correctness out of the room and let people be themselves. They will respect you more. Trust me on that.

What are the usual talking points they discuss with you? Do they shy away from talking about things like genetics, or do they debate you on that?

We talk about everything. You name it, we talk about it. No, they don’t shy away from the genetic thing. Many of them have been brain washed to believe that Blacks have smaller brains than Whites, therefore, we are not as intelligent, nor are we capable of acquiring higher intelligence. Due to this defect, we are predisposed to laziness, and violence. They will often cite the book The Bell Curve, which most of them haven’t read, but someone told them about it. You know who that goes. This person said that, who told someone else, who then told another person and so on. Next thing you know, it’s the Gospel truth.

I find things we have in common such as getting drugs of the street and better education in our schools, etc. Building upon these and similar commonalities, are the first steps to a relationship. Building upon that relationship, is the first step to a friendship. As you nurture those commonalities, they find the things they had in contrast, such as skin color, begin to matter less and less.

After you had broken the ice and gotten to know them, did you feel as if they were good people at heart and just misguided, or were they genuinely just nasty people?

All of the above. There are many good, decent people, who due to lack of exposure and living in their own little echo chambers, foster this culture of superiority and us vs. them mentality. Once coming to know other people who are not in their circle of friends, I saw an expanding of their horizons and some became receptive to, and acceptive of, those they once considered inferior. But make no mistake about it, there are those who are truly nasty and there will be no changing them.

How do you connect, communicate, and/or educate with someone whose views are so virulently different from your own?

The BEST tool I have found is knowledge. Learn as much as you can about the person whose views are so virulently different from your own. Even sit in the privacy of your room and take that person’s position and argue in his favor with yourself. Often times these people who let me know they DID NOT like me, very often respected me, because of my knowledge of their position. I often knew as much if not more about them and their beleif system and their organization than they did. That garnered me respect. Today, some of those same virulent people have become my BEST friends, believe it or not.

Did you learn anything surprising or unexpected during these interactions?

Absolutely!!! Despite what you may have read in the numerous press articles about me converting KKK members, I NEVER set out to convert anyone. I simply set out to ask a question I had formed in my mind as a kid: “How can you hate me when you don’t even know me?” Growing up, we all are told, “A tiger doesn’t change its stripes, a leopard doesn’t change its spots,” etc. I believed that and I didn’t think anyone was going to change, so that wasn’t my initial goal. I just wanted the answer to my question. But over time, though repeated interactions with various KKK members around the country, some of them began questioning their own beliefs as a result of their interacations and conversations with me. Then they began quitting, and I was astounded. Exposure and one-on-one dialogue is the KEY to solving a lot of issues in this country, not just racial ones. We live in echo chambers in which we surround ourselves with people who will reflect back to us, the very same thing we say to them. Therefore we block out anything from the outside as being inferior to what we learn in our little bubbles. I like traveling outside the bubble. Even people with good intentions, tend to shut out those who may hold different opinions. I am willing to listen all all.

My psychology professor told me that when dealing with people making illogical claims or mental illness(like paranoid schizophrenia) the best thing to do is ask them questions. He said that it would help to make them question their own reality and allow them to possibly reach a more logical conclusion on their own rather than trying to force a belief or opinion on them, doing the latter would cause backlash and a stronger attachment to their original belief. I believe this is known as the backfire effect. What is your take on that perspective?

Yes, it’s always better when someone comes to their own realization or conclusion that they have arrived at the correct answer themselves without your help. Their already superior mental state is then stroked. But after a while they realize that it was their interaction with you that led them to this conclusion and they are often grateful for it.

I think it speaks well of the general character of the former Klan members who disavowed their previous beliefs. It can be really hard to admit you’re wrong, even when faced with concrete evidence.

That my friend is the difference between “Ignorance” and “Stupidity.” Some people define those terms as being synonomous. I do not. To me an ignorant person is someone who makes the wrong decision or a bad choice because he does not have the proper facts to make the correct decision or a good choice. If you give that person the facts, you have alleviated their ignorance and they can make the right decision. A stupid person is one who has the facts but still makes the wrong decision.

If I painted the walls of a room and didn’t post any “WET PAINT’ signs, people coming into the room would be ignorant as to the walls being wet and may lean up against the walls, getting paint on their clothing. I can fix that by posting warning signs and telling each person entering the doorway that the walls are wet and to stay off them. But, if I go all of that and someone still leans up against the wall and then wants to know why there is paint on their clothes, it’s because they are STUPID!!! There is a cure for ignorance. That cure is called education. Unfortunately, there is no cure for stupidity. If you give someone the education (facts) and they choose not to use them, there is nothing you can do. 🙂

What was the toughest meeting you ever had with a KKK member?

I have met some who engaged in horrific crimes, including murder. Some have even gotten away with it, while others have gone to prison for it and still show no remorse. You look into their eyes and you can instantly tell, your life is in their crosshairs.

Another tough meeting is when I meet families and their are young children involved. You don’t have to be a psychic to predict that child’s future. It’s like going to a drug-infested ghetto and seeing a mother who is a prostitute and the father is either in prison or selling drugs on the street. There’s a small child in the home. Whiel there is always the rare exception, you know there is a better chance that kid will not finish school, will have an arrest record in his teens, and may be dead before the age of 30.

When you meet with some of these people and you can predict these things, that is VERY scary.

Have you ever felt unsafe or threatened?

I have been in many unsafe situations and have had to deal with not only threats, but also attempts on carrying out those threats. However fortunately, nothing too serious has happened and in a couple of cases, those who threatened me, are now friends. There are those who still pose a threat and will probably do so till they pass away.

Were there any preconceptions you had about the Klan that turned out to be wrong once you actually began to make contact with and get to know some of its members?

Yes there were. As much as I hate to admit it, I was guilty of the same thing many of them are. I was predisposed to thinking they were all alike before meeting them. I came to find out that a Klansman or Klanswoman, is not stamped out of a standard cookie cutter. They come from all walks of life, educational and socio-economic backgrounds. Most importantly, I found out that their beliefs can change for the better.

Have you lost friends or family contact because of your choice to have these meetings?

There are people who will not associate with me and who shun me because of my association with KKK members or neo-Nazis. But no, I have not lost any friends or family, because my friends and family already know that I’m crazy!!! 🙂

Can you provide with some bullet points of things that we need to listen to in order to prevent people from turning to racism and what are the most effective way to act or react?

People make the mistake of forming anti-racist groups that are rendered ineffective from the start because ONLY invite those who share their beliefs to their meetings.

  • Provide a safe neutral meeting place.

  • Learn as much as you can about the ideology of a racist or perceived racist in your area.

  • Invite that person to meet with your group.

*VERY IMPORTANT – LISTEN to that person. What is his/her primary concern? Place yourself in their shoes. What would you do to address their concern if it were you?

  • As questions, but keep calm in the face of their loud, boisterous posture if that is on display, don’t combat it with the same

*While you are actively learning about someone else, realize that you are passively teaching them about yourself. Be honest and respectful to them, regardless of how offensive you may find them. You can let them know your disagreement but not in an offensive manner.

  • Don’t be afraid to invite someone with a different opinion to your table. If everyone in your group agrees with one another and you shun those who don’t agree, how will anything ever change? You are doing nothing more than preaching to the choir.

*When two enemies are talking, they are not fighting, they are talking. They may be yelling and screaming and pounding their fist on the table in disagreement to drive home their point, but at least they are talking. It is when the talking ceases, that the ground becomes fertile for violence. So, KEEP THE CONVERSATION GOING.

What’s the most interesting experience you’ve had while on the job?

I’ve had many. But one of them occurred a couple of weeks ago. I was invited to speak at a Klan meeting which I did and then we all went out to dinner together. This was down South. The White manager of the restaurant recognized me from my documentary Accidental Courtesy and came over to the table and loudly proclaimed, “I recognize you from that movie. I really admire the work you are doing and I just want to shake your hand. Please keep on doing what you’re doing!!!” He didn’t realize the whole tale looking at him were Klansmen and Klanswomen. But, I know his words had a very positive effect on them when they thought about it later, becasue I heard from some of them.

How many people would you say that was, and how long on average would it take them to come around after meeting you?

At this point, I would say directly because of interactions with me, between 50 and 60 have left. Indirectly, I have been the impetus for a couple of hundred. This is the result of those who directly left, influencing some of their friends. Additionally, when leaders have become my friend and leave the Klan, often their group falls by the wayside and those members also leave. I don’t take credit for converting them. They did their own conversion. I was simply the impetus for it. Now understand, when a Klan group falls apart, it does not mean there are no more racists in the area. It simply means there is no more KKK group. In some cases, some of them renounce their beliefs and some still maintain the beliefs but don’t reorganize into a group. They drop out and move on with their lives.

Do you find in today’s PC world, more or less opposition to you and your story?

I am NOT someone who is PC and I personally think political correctness a crock of you-know-what. There are many who are receptive to me and my story, but yes, there are those who are not. In fact, I speak all over the country at colleges and universities on this topic. There are some school activity boards who have booked me, only to have the administration deny it and and they have to cancel the booking. The administration thought it was too controversial a topic. What a bunch of idiots who call themselves running an institution of higher learning. That’s PC for you.

Stop. Fucking. Complaining.

Stop making excuses.

Stop finding reasons for your unhappiness, your failure in life.

Stop looking at the lives others lead and enviously wanting to be in their shoes, with their upbringing, and their social status.

Whining, complaining, giving reasons for why you’re failing, they’re all excuses and they all remove YOUR ability to BE HAPPY.

For fuck’s sakes it’s getting to be too much!

Everywhere you go you hear people complaining. Conversations start about what’s wrong with their job or with the world or how they wish they could take a vacation.

You can’t! We need to work. We need to save. We need to shut up and do what we’ve gotta do because we want to not only survive, but thrive!

Since when are vacations a “right”?

Since when do we deserve what we cannot afford and should not spend our money on?

Since when is buckling down and saving and working harder not the only option?

If you don’t like where you are in life YOU HAVE TO CHANGE IT.

What Was It Like To Be Executed In The 18th Century?

Account of the execution of Robert-François Damiens, a French domestic servant whose attempted assassination of King Louis XV of France in 1757. He was condemned to be burnt with hot lead, torn with pincers, and finally to be drawn and quartered. Recorded by an officer of the court:

“The sulphur was lit, but the flame was so poor that only the top skin of the hand was burnt, and that only slightly. Then the executioner, his sleeves rolled up, took the steel pincers, which had been especially made for the occasion, and which were about a foot and a half long, and pulled first at the calf of the right leg, then at the thigh, and from there at the two fleshy parts of the right arm; then at the breasts. Though a strong, sturdy fellow, this executioner found it so difficult to tear away the pieces of flesh that he set about the same spot two or three times, twisting the pincers as he did so, and what he took away formed at each part a wound about the size of a six-pound crown piece.

“After these tearings with the pincers, Damiens, who cried out profusely, though without swearing, raised his head and looked at himself; the same executioner dipped an iron spoon in the pot containing the boiling potion, which he poured liberally over each wound. Then the ropes that were to be harnessed to the horses were attached with cords to the patient’s body; the horses were then harnessed and placed alongside the arms and legs, one at each limb.

“Monsieur Le Breton, the clerk of the court, went up to the patient several times and asked him if he had anything to say. He said he had not; at each torment, he cried out, as the damned in hell are supposed to cry out, ‘Pardon, my God! Pardon, my Lord.’ Despite all this pain, he raised his head from time to time and looked at himself boldly. The cords had been tied so tightly by the men who pulled the ends that they caused him indescribable pain. Monsieur le [sic] Breton went up to him again and asked him if he had anything to say; he said no. Several confessors went up to him and spoke to him at length; he willingly kissed the crucifix that was held out to him; he opened his lips and repeated: ‘Pardon, Lord.’

“The horses tugged hard, each pulling straight on a limb, each horse held by an executioner. After a quarter of an hour, the same ceremony was repeated and finally, after several attempts, the direction of the horses had to be changed, thus: those at the arms were made to pull towards the head, those at the thighs towards the arms, which broke the arms at the joints. This was repeated several times without success. He raised his head and looked at himself. Two more horses had to be added to those harnessed to the thighs, which made six horses in all. Without success.

“Finally, the executioner, Samson, said to Monsieur Le Breton that there was no way or hope of succeeding, and told him to ask their Lordships if they wished him to have the prisoner cut into pieces. Monsieur Le Breton, who had come down from the town, ordered that renewed efforts be made, and this was done; but the horses gave up and one of those harnessed to the thighs fell to the ground. The confessors returned and spoke to him again. He said to them (I heard him): ‘Kiss me, gentlemen.’ The parish priest of St Paul’s did not dare to, so Monsieur de Marsilly slipped under the rope holding the left arm and kissed him on the forehead. The executioners gathered round and Damiens told them not to swear, to carry out their task and that he did not think ill of them; he begged them to pray to God for him, and asked the parish priest of St Paul’s to pray for him at the first mass.

“After two or three attempts, the executioner Samson and he who had used the pincers each drew out a knife from his pocket and cut the body at the thighs instead of severing the legs at the joints; the four horses gave a tug and carried off the two thighs after them, namely, that of the right side first, the other following; then the same was done to the arms, the shoulders, the arm-pits and the four limbs; the flesh had to be cut almost to the bone, the horses pulling hard carried off the right arm first and the other afterwards.

“When the four limbs had been pulled away, the confessors came to speak to him; but his executioner told them that he was dead, though the truth was that I saw the man move, his lower jaw moving from side to side as if he were talking. One of the executioners even said shortly afterwards that when they had lifted the trunk to throw it on the stake, he was still alive. The four limbs were untied from the ropes and thrown on the stake set up in the enclosure in line with the scaffold, then the trunk and the rest were covered with logs and faggots, and fire was put to the straw mixed with this wood.

“…In accordance with the decree, the whole was reduced to ashes. The last piece to be found in the embers was still burning at half-past ten in the evening. The pieces of flesh and the trunk had taken about four hours to burn. The officers of whom I was one, as also was my son, and a detachment of archers remained in the square until nearly eleven o’clock.

“There were those who made something of the fact that a dog had lain the day before on the grass where the fire had been, had been chased away several times, and had always returned. But it is not difficult to understand that an animal found this place warmer than elsewhere”
