After Working With Terminally Ill Cancer Patients, Here’s A List Of What They Say You Should Appreciate While You’re Alive

(photo: @jwwphotography)

The things my patients say they’ll miss the most are NOT seeing the World Landmarks, buying fancy things, that new car, “living it up” party style, etc.

Here is an actual compiled list:

  • Watching my sons throw a baseball

  • Listening to my grandparents tell stories

  • My girlfriend surprising me with a kiss on the cheek

  • Holding my wife in my arms knowing there’s no where in the world I’d rather be

  • Gram’s Sunday dinners and the whole family getting together

  • My dog

  • Seeing my fiancé smile and feeling his arms wrap around me

  • My daughter running to me when I get home

  • The smell of flowers and rain

  • The day I got married. I said I never would. And then I met her. And now I have to leave her.

  • Smelling the fireplace on Christmas morning with the family

  • All my friends

  • Watching my family sleep

  • The rush of weekday mornings. I know it sounds crazy, but I’ll miss it. I’ll miss the coffee, the crowded bathrooms, my wife’s quick peck goodbye, the kids forgetting their lunch.. you get my point

  • Rain. Is that weird?

….notice none of these things cost any money. They don’t include technology. They’re not grand gestures.

It’s human to human (or animals/nature) interaction, something we need more of in world that’s becoming more fast paced and less human every day.

So revamp your bucket list. Live in the moment. Put down your phone. Notice the people around you.

“Generally speaking, you’re free until you’re about 4 years old. Then you go to grammar school and then you start becoming…oriented and shoved into areas. You lose what individualism you have. If you have enough of course, you retain some of it… Then you work the 8 hour job with almost a feeling of goodness, like you’re doing something. Then you get married like marriage is a victory, and you have children like children is a victory… Marriage, birth, children. It’s something they have to do because there’s nothing else to do. There’s no glory in it, there’s no steam, there’s no fire. It’s very, very flat… You get caught into the stricture of what you’re supposed to be and you have no other choice. You’re finally molded and melded into what you’re supposed to be. I didn’t like this.”

The 1990 Singler Porsche 964 DLS Is Automotive Perfection

Last year, Singer Vehicle Design announced a partnership with Williams Advanced Engineering that resulted in the creation of a monstrous 500-horsepower naturally-aspirated flat-six engine that was to be put into all of the firm’s upcoming vehicles. We waited to see the first car to feature the power plant and now it’s finally been revealed. And we are not at all disappointed.

Based on a 1990 Porsche 964, this gorgeous green car is an absurdly beautiful example of automotive perfection – part of a series the brand is now calling DLS (for Dynamics and Lightweight Study). This series, of which no more than 75 will be made, features parts and consultations from the likes of Michelin, Brembo, BBS Motorsport, and Porsche legends Norbert Singer and Hans Mezger. The build also features liberal usage of magnesium, titanium, carbon fiber, and other enhanced materials to bring the total weight down to just 2,180 lbs – further enhancing the car’s performance. And the whole bespoke beauty is finished off with an Absinthe exterior paint job with Blood Orange accents and interior. Rumor has it, it starts at $1.5 milion.

What’s It Like To Take Part In An Ayahuasca Ceremony?

$
0

The first time I heard about Ayahuasca was in a Rolling Stone article and it did not paint a pretty picture: sitting blindfolded in a dark room, puking into buckets, and wearing adult diapers. I suppose in an attempt at journalistic fairness the author talked about both the psychedelic wonders of the experience and also the corridors of hell. I found the article terrifying.

A year or so later a close friend of mine had his own experience with the spirit vine and upon telling me about his beautiful adventures he continually prodded me, “When are you going to drink Ayahuasca?” In my mind, not soon, but now at least I had an invitation. Through my ongoing spiritual journey I learned more about the “Grandmother” and after about two years of education I decided it was time for a visit. I asked my friend if he could help arrange an upcoming session and two months later I found myself in an Ayahuasca healing ceremony with a Peruvian Shaman direct from the Amazon.

I arrived at the temple about an hour or so before the ceremony was to begin. There were twenty total participants and everyone was setting up little beds – mattress pads, blankets, pillows, personal “power objects” and everyone had a small white bucket for purging into. Another first-timer friend of mind accompanied me for the journey. The group was arranged in a U-shaped circle and with not much room left so my friend and I arranged ourselves at opposite ends of the U with the Shaman between us. Later I discovered that my friend and I were the only two virgin Ayahuascaros of the group. I found it pleasing that the two of us ended up at the opposite anchors of the circle and next to the Shaman.

The Shaman spoke for about twenty or thirty minutes about what we were embarking upon. He blessed the Ayahuasca, called in the four spirits, and then called us up one by one to receive our dosage. I was the last of the group to get the medicine. I was relatively calm in those final moments but had plenty of anxiety beforehand. I had been preparing for the experience a long time with a special recommended diet of no salt, no dairy, no refined sugar, no red meat or pork, no alcohol, no sex, no drugs of any kind, and also meditation in both the morning and evening.

I knelt down to receive my brew. Knowing it was my first time the Shaman asked me through a translator, “Do you have experience with other psychedelics?” I said, “Yes.” “Are you sensitive?” I said, “No,” but haltingly. He poured a dark brown gooey liquid from one container into a thimble shot glass like cup – he looked me in the eyes – poured a bit more from a second container – looked me in the eyes – and then poured a bit back into the container. I felt he was sensing some kind of innocence and I trusted his dosing completely. I drank the goo, which tasted like battery acid mixed with echinachia extract. I thanked him and sat down on my mat.

We sat in silence for about thirty minutes. I was not feeling any effects besides intense anticipation. The sun had now receded and total darkness descended upon the room. I breathed and closed my eyes and after 30 or 40 minutes it began.

I started to see geometric like patterns. Something was happening. I heard someone purge. It was my friend. “Oh no. Is he okay? Here we go,” I thought. The Shaman began shaking a rattle and singing. The visuals rapidly increased into a multi-colored, fractal, ever changing Tron-like laser light show moving at hyper speed. It was amazing but fast. Soon I felt a buzzing of energy around me that was incredibly strong. I got very hot and uncomfortable. I was sweating profusely and I couldn’t find relief – just too hot. I began to accept the fact that I would likely have to throw up. I was having a hard time with it. I reached in the darkness for my little white bucket and put it between my legs. As the buzzing grew and against the cacophony of the light show I heard a voice – a cheerful little spirit – it said, “Okay, so we’re going to do this and it won’t be that bad and after it’s over with things are just going to be great, are you ready?” I mumbled a weak “Okay.” The voice added, “No don’t think about it too much we’ll just get it over with, ok, here we go…” And then I purged. Considering I had been fasting for the previous twenty-four hours all that came up was the same Ayahuasca battery acid and a little bit of water. It came out in an explosion of colors and a wild burst of energy. I heaved as much as I could, tried to clean myself up, and lay back down in a fetal position with my puke bucket as my new best friend.

I lay there on my side and entered hyperspace. The Absolute. I immediately felt better. One of the three sitters in the room changed out my bucket. It was so strong. A muscular force that was lifting me into another dimension. I had no idea where we were going next – I just focused on my breathing: long slow breaths in through the nose, out through the mouth. This was my lifeblood. My meditation practice before the journey was invaluable. Being able to continually return to by breath and release thoughts helped steer the balance of my sanity. The more I was able to breath with total purity – without thought or judgment – the more I slipped into ecstatic enlightenment. I could feel little flittering floating elf like creatures buzzing around me and pulling away layers of beauty.

The music was beautiful and the Shaman was seemingly everywhere. Sometimes I would sing along with his songs to help regulate my breathing. I would hang onto his singing like a life preserver in a stormy ocean. His rhythm was incredible. He would sing a song and then stop for what seemed like long stretches of time when I could forget there was any music before at all. And in the pauses was total silence as we gently rocked in a womb of absolute being.

I felt we were in a hall or pantheon of cosmic peace and wisdom – an infinite space of pure thoughtless being. All twenty of us were there together, all absolutely in the same space, all breathing together – in and out. It was incredible. A room of souls just hanging out in Timelessness, purring and utterly connected. If someone was in need – in pain or purging – we would breath for him or her and bring the individual back into the space. I realized that we were taking turns breathing for one other – we took turns at many tasks, looking after one another – so we could all do the “work” that needed to be done. I found this to be a poignant model for building community on planet Earth: each of us taking care of one another, taking turns, trading, sharing, not waiting or expecting, pure giving.

Throughout the ceremony my mind, my ego, was a masterful clever fellow. I saw my mind as a separate sentient being with thirty-one years of experience and it would use unbelievable complex tricks to grab my attention. Anytime I found myself “thinking” and falling down an uncomfortable void of anxiety I would (as in meditation) return to the breath – in and out – and almost instantly the bliss returned, the cosmic knowledge returned: “this is the lesson, this is your being.” The never ending back and forth from our minds to our body, from our ego to our souls, from our thoughts to our breath, is an endless lesson in forgiveness – I was learning how to let go and surrender to what is, to the moment, absent of any punishment or perceived outcome. I felt profound forgiveness. I felt a lifetime of judgment and guilt for all my perceived shortcomings and apparent failures disintegrate in one breath. The simplicity ushered absolute peace. Just one breath and it was gone.

At one point I felt the voice return and it said, “Do you want to know what enlightenment is?” “Yes,” I replied. I took another slow deep thoughtless breath and understood it in pure manifestation. “There it is, it’s as simple as that” replied the voice, “and it’s with you at every moment.” It’s all inside us – enlightenment is as simple as letting go of your mind – letting go of attachment to yourself, to outcomes, to just letting go to the way things are. But the realization wasn’t a rejection of my ego. Instead it’s about embracing the false duality of our existence with compassion.

The songs continued. The journey pressed on. Sometimes other people offered music. Much of it was transcendent: antique guitars, chimes, solo voices, flutes, and myself with a drum.

Throughout the ceremony I sometimes wondered how long it had been or how much longer it would continue but such “thoughts” only brought discomfort and I found them to be yet another trick of the mind. The Shaman came over to me at one point and put his hand on my head and whispered in my ear, “How are you?” “I’m listening to you, I’m here, I’m listening,” I whispered. He blew something around me and under my shirt and I felt as if gold rain was washing away all my fears, all menacing spirits, and I melted into surrender with bottomless gratitude.

The absence of validation and judgment with the embracing of total surrender and forgiveness for the Self and others (many times being the same thing) was a critical lesson. I felt this was the ticket to the highway of eternity. Forgive myself, let go, and breath – in and out.

Embrace the struggle; the harder it is, the more you gain from it. The more you test yourself and are required to push yourself, the tougher you become, the greater your capacity for effort becomes. It’s in the struggle that we grow and evolve, yet so many of us distract ourselves from the struggle instead of embracing it and rejoicing in it.

Harsh times aren’t curses, they’re blessings, gifts that are bestowed upon us and they’ll lead us to greatness if we see them as such. So many, though, see them not as challenges, but as curses. They compare their hardships to the cushy lives that others aim to portray. They see the hours they have to spend working to yield little results while others are traveling and partying and lying on beaches, sun-hat on head, Corona in hand.

You need to embrace the struggle, to flee from it is to fail, it’s to weaken your resolve and relegate yourself to what can only be a shell of the life you have it within you to lead. We aren’t born with this understanding, it’s something we have to learn and we usually discover its necessity through failure.

I’ve failed more than I’ve won and every time I’ve failed its the work and the persistence after that failure that created something good from it. It’s the struggle that came after the fall, the climb back from the abyss, that not only made me tougher, but generated some kind of victory that could not have been without a sadistic love for the struggle, for a prolonged focus on a single thing and an avoidance of avoidance.

If you are to be anywhere near what you can be, you must seek to forge your potential within the fire of the struggle, within the flames of hard work and persistence because there is no other way.

What Does It Feel Like To Have A Woman Love You?

$

(photo:@hollowaykryan)

1. I remember what it felt like. You wake up with this feeling that you can accomplish anything. Wherever you go, whatever you do, you feel powerful and capable. You don’t give a shit about what others think of you, you stop overthinking for no reason, you just do it. You are at the right place at the right time every time, because you figure out a way to make every moment an opportunity. You feel all of this because somewhere in all this space and noise, you know there’s this beautiful person that loves every detail of you, someone that accepts you for who you are, no matter what. You love her, she loves you, and that gives you incredible strength. That makes you live with ambition. That makes you live with so much confidence. You walk around like nothing can break you.

I hope I can live it again, I wish you to live it too.

2. It feels like playing a very hard video game level then all of a sudden a player 2 joins in, and even if the level doesn’t become any easier, it becomes way more fun and definitely memorable. You’ve got someone to watch Netflix with. You’ve got someone who will sing with you when your favorite song comes on. You’ve got someone who’ll help you out in the kitchen. You’ve got someone to snuggle up with.

3. It’s like she gave you a loaded weapon that could easily kill her, trusting that you will not use it. Absolute vulnerability that just makes you wanna make her the safest and happiest person in the world.

4. Absolutely a 10/10, would recommend experience. Your heart beats faster when you see her, and it feels surreal when she is excited to see you. When you two kiss, you can sense her feelings for you. In fact, every single thing she does with you, every hug, every back rub, every time she holds your hand, every time she lays her head on your shoulder or chest, feels like a genuine show of her feelings for you. She makes you feel like the best man you can be.

5. When you’re a couple in love, you truly love her, and she truly loves you, you are complete in a way that’s hard to understand until you’ve been there. There’s a reason people call their significant other their “better half”. It’s not me and her, it’s us.

I want you to pause and reflect on that for half a second. Us. It’s a feeling of fulfillment in a part of you that you might not even know about until it happens, because it’s… It’s like being blind but suddenly you see.

There’s a phrase that goes something like, “Love is patient. Love is understanding.” etc etc. But while that’s true, love is also an understanding in and of itself. It’s an entire new sense. A limb you didn’t know you have. A piece of your brain that is unlocked. Love songs make sense. Art looks different. You mature in some ways, and feel blissfully young in others. To sum it up in a few words, you change, wholly, irrevocably, and I’d like to think for the better.

On the flip side, it’s the single most painful experience you will ever have. Your heart is entwined with a living breathing person, and when she hurts, you’ll bleed inside. When she’s sad, when she’s angry, when she’s hurt, when she’s sick, it burns and thrashes inside you.

Empathy was the greatest and hardest lesson I learned from my first real love, and it changed how I interacted with the people around me in a big way. I grew into a better person. I became more confident, because she believed in me. I became more comfortable with myself, because she loved me despite everything I hated about myself. I became kinder, because I wanted her to be proud of me. I worked on myself in any way I could think of because she didn’t become a part of my world. She was my world.

It was life changing, and I’ve never been the same since then. I could wax poetic for weeks like this, but I should probably bring it to a close so I don’t make an idiot of myself.

6. Once you get past the infatuation phase, it’s kinda like a warm fuzzy blanket.

I love snuggling up to my wife, doing things together, & spoiling her with random gifts. Seeing her smile makes my stress melt away.

Sure, we bang too, but for me, it’s more about knowing that all is right in my life. We share moments that make me feel like I’m having a pleasant dream during a nap under the sun. But I’m not dreaming. It’s real.

And that makes me smile from the heart.

7. Better than any drug out there.

8. It’s nice. Having an open line of communication with someone, without fear of being judged or ridiculed.

She takes care of you, and you take care of her.

You both listen to eachother about anything – whether it’s about your day at work, or family issues you might be having.

She is comfort for you when there is none elsewhere. She feels comfortable around you to be herself.

She makes you feel powerful, strong and tall. Even in your weakest moment she will make you feel like the best man you can be.

She is so attracted to you, so loyal and respectful. She embraces you at the end of every bad or good day, and it just feels right.

She has a dependency on you, to comfort her and do everything she does for you in return.

There is nothing you can do to disgust her. You can wake up in the morning, look like shit, have bad breath and a mess of bed hair, she will still kiss you and smile.

And because of all that, when she looks at you every day, the same way she has since you met, she says “I love you”, you know she means it.

9. My experience of being loved by a girl is that it is an amazing feeling that is hard to describe concisely. She has accepted me for who I am, deemed me worthy, and has decided to make me a significant part of her life. In order for that to work, I am also accepting her and deeming her worthy enough for me. She is the person I think of first whenever I hear a new joke. If I taste something amazing, I make sure that she gets some if it too, because I want her to experience it. My happiness is somewhat bound to her happiness. Seeing her smile makes me smile. When she is not feeling well I want to be there to take care of her. Much of love is bundled up in the act of returning the love.

To be loved by a girl is to always know that you have someone to talk to. I can cry in front of her and know that she won’t judge me. She knows me inside and out and still loves me. Knowing that I have someone who knows me so well and still considers me a good person makes me feel very confident and secure. Knowing that she values me makes me want to be a better person. I know that I am her best friend, and she is mine. We have gobs of inside jokes. When I need honest advice that I know I can trust, I go to her.

10.  It feels like everything you had to go through to get to that point was worth it.

German Shepherd Beaten And Shot Multiple Times Saving His 16-Year-Old Owner From Burglars

On February 21st armed intruders invaded 16-year-old Javier Mercado‘s house, he was home alone with Rex. It all happened just after noon in Des Moines, USA – Javier heard a noise and looked through a window where he saw a car he didn’t recognize. “I then heard the sliding door break, and it is made out of just glass so it shattered really loud,” said Mercado. “My dog ran downstairs, and it just started barking and barking. I heard one guy scream, ‘the dog bit me, get the dog.’”

As soon as this happened, Javier dialed 911 and went into the closet. “Rex stormed back to the upstairs floor all beat up and bloody,” writes Javier’s aunt. “Soon, the burglars proceeded to the upstairs floor and trashed all the bedrooms. As they entered the room where Javier was hiding in the closet, Rex came out with the little strength he had left in him and threw himself at them as he knew my nephew was in danger.” Sadly, they shot the dog four times and he gave up his battle.

After police arrived on the scene, Rex, who had sustained gunshot wounds to the neck and legs, was taken to an animal hospital. He was alive, but would need surgery to survive.

“I was worried, my parents were worried. My dad said he was going to start working every Saturday, saving up.”

Fortunately, Javier’s cousin set up a GoFundMe page for Rex. Describing the incident, Susy Cadena wrote in part:

Rex stormed back to the upstairs floor all beat up and bloody from the beating to check on his master who was still hiding in the closet. Soon, the burglars proceeded to the upstairs floor and trashed all the bedrooms. As they entered the room where my nephew was hiding in the closet, Rex came out with the little strength he had left in him and threw himself at them as he knew my nephew was in danger. Sadly, they shot Rex [three] times and finally Rex, the héroe dog, gave up in his battle. It was the sirens who scared them away.

The GoFundMe campaign — which began with a goal of $10,000 — has received more than $58,000 in donations as of this publication.
