I am an early retiree. I have been living that life for some time. Many years ago (before it became popular) my wife and I chose to live significantly below our means so we could achieved financial independence. I am now living what you are planning, so I think I can provide more of a sense of the big picture.
Here’s the piece you (and a few others in this thread) seem to be missing… Living below your means isn’t about postponing gratification. In other words, it’s not about giving up products and experiences when you’re young so you can have them when you’re old. That’s not it at all.
What it’s really about is freedom. Most people are, in many ways, slaves. I was a slave. Beginning at age five I was forced to get up in the morning and go somewhere I didn’t really want to go, and do things I didn’t really want to do. Elementary school. Then high school. Then college. Then work. And throughout all those years there was an undertone of fear. Fear that you’ll get in trouble with Mom and Dad if your grades suck. Fear that your performance in college won’t result in a decent job. Fear that you’ll lose your job, and that your family will suffer, if you don’t kiss up to the right people, or meet your quotas, or because some asshole above you decides to eliminate your job… always that nagging worry and fear in the background.
When it comes right down to it, usually you really don’t want to be there. And many of us really don’t want to be doing whatever they make us do. Maybe you’re even forced to do shit you don’t feel right about, just to survive (cutting corners, speed over quality, turning a blind eye, not being totally honest…). Dealing with assholes. Dealing with office politics. Dragging your ass out of bed at 6 AM. Forcing yourself to go to bed at 10 PM so you don’t feel like shit at 6 AM. Driving through horrendous traffic. Other people having the power to wreak economic harm on you, and your wife, and your kids (which is a very bad way to be harmed because it involves having decent food, safe shelter, safe transportation, etc.). Many people live just a few weeks, or months, away from financial ruin or homelessness. Always on the edge. Always needing to rely on others for access to a job, or for a loan, or so you can meet your job expectations, or ____ . This isn’t living a life that is free. Not really. It’s living a life in economic bondage. It can be a rather benign type of bondage, but it sure as hell isn’t freedom because your choices are limited, your time belongs to someone else, and there’s always that undertone of worry and fear. "What if?…". "How long can we survive?…". "Will I meet my quotas?….".
So this isn’t about postponing cool shit from youth to old age. Not at all. It’s about escaping from the economic bondage of a wage slave. It’s about freedom. It’s about removing all that fear and worry from your life. It’s about removing all the bullshit from your life. It’s about getting out from under those above you who have the power to harm you and your family by eliminating your job, or by tossing you to the curb because maybe they don’t like your attitude. It’s about realizing that nobody should have the power to harm you like that. It’s about wanting to get out from under somebody else’s thumb. You’re legally free to walk away from your job tomorrow, but if you don’t have the economic freedom to do that, you’re not free at all. It’s about being free to sleep as late as you want, stay up as late as you want, and spend your time doing whatever you want. It’s about realizing that there is no security unless you make it.
So it’s all about freedom – not "stuff". The sooner you start working toward untying those bonds, the sooner you will be free. The more you deny yourself now, the sooner you will be free. And you really need to do it when you have the opportunity, because there’s no guarantee that you will even have a job five years from now. And after you have attained your freedom, there’s nothing that will stop you from continuing to work if you’re lucky enough to have a job you look forward to going to (or have a job at all). But it will be YOUR choice.
So that’s what it’s really about, or at least that’s what it was about for me. And I’ve got to tell you, achieving financial freedom was the best decision we ever made. I thank my lucky stars every day that we decided to go that route. Most of my peers will die at their desks without ever having experienced what it’s like to truly be free. Yet I live every day exactly as I choose, and with no economic worries, no stress, and no fear. We become so conditioned to the worries and fear that we think we are free when we’re really not. It isn’t until you truly experience this freedom that you realize what you have been missing. The relief and overall sense of peace and happiness is astounding. Don’t let anyone tell you it isn’t worth it.

There aren’t many activities in life where just showing up guarantees results. That’s because life is hard. Building a business is difficult, there’s not a step-by-step formula for success. Relationships are complex and can fail even if you do everything right. But there is one thing in life that’s a guarantee: Exercise.
Nothing so simple can have as much of a positive effect on your life. Exercising is by far the smartest thing you can do if you want to live a happier, more active, longer, more vibrant, more energetic life. I’ll go as far as saying that it is essential for true success because well-being defines success. And it’s not even hard to do.
Here’s why I consider exercise to be simple: 80% of the benefits from exercise are from showing up and exerting yourself. Virtually no training is required. Your body was built for physical activity. You don’t need to think about it or worry that what you’re doing is wrong. Any physical activity for an extended period of time on a regular basis counts as exercise. Just keep it simple to start and do natural human motions: running, pushups, pullups, jumping, dancing, etc.
Obviously there are ways to make exercising even more beneficial by learning more or following specific workout programs, which requires additional effort. When you are ready for more advanced programs, remember to start light, use proper form, and over time add more weight and/or run faster. As you become physically fit and push yourself harder, exercise becomes very challenging. But at its most basic level exercise is stupid easy.
I mean seriously, think about it. You don’t have to know anything or do anything extremely difficult. Exercise only requires that you show up and try. And IF you do this, you will have more energy, feel better about yourself, and see improvements in your health and motivation, at a minimum.
You are probably saying to yourself, “I know, I know…exercise is good for you. Everyone knows that exercise is good for you…” If you’re saying this and you already exercise regularly then you most likely haven’t read this far. If you feel this way, but you don’t actually exercise, before you stop reading, hear me out.
How can it be that you know exercise is good for you, yet you fail to do it? Either you don’t really know how good it is for you, you don’t care how good it is for you, or you’ve created bad habits in your life that prevent you from getting started and building momentum. I’m going to rule out that you don’t care because if you’ve read this far, it shows that you care about your health. That leaves 2 options: you don’t truly understand the benefits or you are stuck with poor habits:
I read the standard physical activity guidelines that the U.S. Health and Human Services Department puts out which discuss the benefits of moderate physical activity for 2.5 hours a week. To put this in perspective, an example of moderate activity was “brisk walking”. In almost all cases, the benefits are greater if the intensity is increased. Some of the health benefits included:
-If you walk briskly for 2.5 hours a week, you are 25% less likely to die early, meaning die before your expected age. If you increase this to 7 hours a week, you are 40% less likely to die early.
-As many as 250 000 deaths per year in the United States are attributable to a lack of regular physical activity. A sedentary lifestyle is one of the 5 major risk factors (along with high blood pressure, abnormal values for blood lipids, smoking, and obesity) for cardiovascular disease, as outlined by the AHA.
-Exercising will improve your mental well-being. Exercising just 2-3 times a week showed significantly less depression, anger, distrust, and stress.
-Exercising for just 10 minutes at a moderate level is shown to improve mood and reduce fatigue.
-Even in people who are clinically diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder, just 30 minutes of exercise for 10 days in a row significantly improved mood and reduced depression symptoms.
It took me less than 10 minutes to find the above information. That is just the tip of the iceberg as far as clinical information goes. I can tell you from my own personal experience that exercise recharges me. When I go through a day without exercising, I can feel the lack of energy. And if I miss a few days, I actually feel myself getting depressed and the lack of exercise begins to affect other areas of my life.
Are you ready to commit to exercising? If so, don’t wait. Prove it to yourself. Do 10 push ups RIGHT NOW. If you can’t do 10, do 1. If you can’t do a pushup, do something else to mark your commitment to improving your life by exercising.
Now commit to exercise daily for 2 weeks and see what happens. Just show up every day and give 100% effort for 20-30 minutes. Keep it really simple too. Jog until you can’t jog anymore. Then walk as fast as you can until you have to slow down. If this is too simple, do as many push-ups as you can, take a short break, and do more. The easiest way to start is to stick to pushups, pullups, air squats, jogging, and sprinting. If this is too BORING, find a workout program that you can get excited about. Find something that works for you, that you feel comfortable with. The most important thing is that you show up every single day, spend 20-30 straight minutes, and give 100% effort at whatever you choose to do. That’s all it takes.
When you start, keep yourself motivated by visualizing the changes that will eventually happen to your body, but don’t focus too much on progress until you’ve proven to yourself that you have the discipline to commit to exercising. After you get through 2 weeks, start to focus more on tracking your progress and setting personal goals.
Do this and see how your life changes. See how good it makes you feel. And then, only after you’ve proven that you are willing to show up and after you’ve proven to yourself that its worthwhile, start to worry more about the details. Once you’ve developed the habit of showing up, start to set more specific fitness goals and then find ways to meet these goals. But right now, if you aren’t in the habit of exercising regularly, just do it! Go now! Start today! It’s the biggest bang-for-your-buck, mindless, activity that is guaranteed to improve your life.

For anyone looking to learn a martial art that teaches you how to properly defend yourself, then look no further then Jiu Jitsu. I’ve been doing it for about 2 years now and I can say without a doubt that learning jiu jitsu has been one of the best decisions of my life. Yes, I’ve learned how to choke the hell out of someone in a myriad of different ways, but jiu jitsu has also changed me as a person. It has taught me how to hold my head up high and believe in myself. It has instilled a discipline and patience that has always been lacking. And it has taught me that hard work, persistence and a posititve attitude will take me wherever I want to go in life. Plus, I can say that because of Jiu Jitsu, I am in the best shape that I have ever been. Try 20 minutes of rolling and you will understand how much of a workout it can be. Give it a shot, who knows, it might change your life too.
