How can people doubt huge moments in history, like the holocaust or men landing on the moon?

Have you considered why you believe that the Holocaust happened?

Think about it. You believe that it happened because people you trust told you it did. You believe that there is a huge amount of evidence because those same people that you trust told you that there is.

Have you examined the evidence yourself? Have you examined huge numbers of written accounts, and analyzed their accuracy? Have you visited the camps, spent years studying forensics, and collected the evidence you need to make a conclusion? Have you even gained enough knowledge to critically examine the work of the people who do claim to have done these things? Have you actually looked through the body of “videos and photos” and considered whether they constitute real evidence for the claims involved? Have you looked at Nazi records discussing mass extermination?

Now, I tend to trust the historians who have actually studied World War II. They put in the time, and they say it happened, so I accept that it happened. But I can’t pretend that I did the work to gain that knowledge myself – someone else did that, and my acceptance of the Holocaust as a fact depends on my trust of those people.

So if you don’t trust the establishment, whether that be the government, or historians, or the mainstream media, then it’s very easy to doubt the work that they have done, since almost nobody has actually examined the evidence themselves. This holds true for almost all historical events. If I don’t trust the US government to tell the truth for shit, then why should I believe that the first moon landing was anything other than a propaganda piece? All the evidence that says it happened is sourced from somebody I don’t trust, and I’m sure as hell not going to go the moon myself to check.

This is why people disbelieve historical events – they don’t trust the people who are the sole providers of evidence, and they are not able to put in the years of work to actually accumulate the evidence themselves.

How did Florida become the go-to state for retirement?

From this Slate article :

Leading up to Tuesday’s Republican primary in Florida, Sen. John McCain sucked up to the 65-and-older crowd at The Villages retirement community by decrying the cost of prescription drugs. Mitt Romney went after the same age bracket by attacking the Arizona senator’s Medicare voting record. Senior citizens are a political force in the Sunshine State: 3 million of Florida’s 18.7 million residents are seniors, the densest concentration of elderly folk in the country. How’d Florida get to be so full of old people?

Good weather, effective marketing, low taxes, and a herd mentality. In the first half of the 20th century, the concept of moving to warmer climes upon retirement didn’t really exist—seniors generally lived with relatives to conserve funds. But the advent of Social Security payments in 1940, as well as the post-World War II economic boom, made it possible for grannies to live independently. During this same period, real-estate developers were buying up land in Florida (one of the least populated states in the South) and trying to capitalize on the region’s tropical climate. Boosters put together promotional videos touting the state as a “fountain of youth,” which they screened all across the northern United States. Seniors, flush with their Social Security checks, were among those who heeded the call. ADVERTISING

Florida also made economic sense for retirees: The cost of living was low, and the legislature did its best to make homeownership affordable. In 1934, Floridians approved the Homestead Exemption Amendment, which eased the burden on homeowners by exempting property taxes on the first $5,000 of a permanent residence. In 1980, the legislature boosted the exemption to $25,000.

At first, the elderly migrated to cities like Miami and St. Petersburg. But in the ’60s, big development groups began building gated communities, which lured seniors with amenities such as golf courses and sewing classes. Like the postwar boosters, these developers have focused on marketing. (For example, the chiasmus “We give years to your life and life to your years” draws residents to Century Village.) Some cities, worried that too much gray hair could damage their reputations, helped along the exodus to gated communities by making urban living less geriatric-friendly. In St. Petersburg, for example, city administrators removed the green public benches that had lined the sidewalks, ostensibly for aesthetic reasons, but also because they were popular with tired seniors.

Word-of-mouth within northern communities helped solidify Florida’s status as a retirement mecca. Before air travel became customary, pioneering New Yorkers took Interstate 95 straight to Miami, and Midwesterners took Interstate 75 to Tampa. Then they’d brag about the high life to friends back home and set off a stampede. Demographers call this phenomenon “chain migration.” It helps explain not only why Florida has remained so popular among retirees, but why (despite the ease of air travel) the state is still segmented according to northern geography, with New Yorkers in Palm Beach County and Detroiters in Naples.

What’s the difference between the US Senate, Congress and House of Representatives?

Congress is the name of the US legislature. It meets in the Capitol Building and is comprised of two houses:

1) The House of Representatives is called the “people’s house.” It is comprised of people who represent districts of roughly equal population. It has 435 voting members and 6 delegates that represent districts and territories outside of the 50 states. Representatives (sometimes called Congress(wo)men) have 3 unique powers: Originate tax bills, impeach federal officials, and elect the President of the United States if the Electoral College fails to do so. Like the Senate they can also call hearings, special meetings, and propose legislation. The House of Representatives is elected every 2 years.

2) The Senate is the “upper house” of Congress. It is comprised of 100 voting Senators (2 from each state) and the Vice-President of the United States who presides as President of the Senate and casts tie-breaking votes when necessary. Senators have 3 unique powers: Approve treaties, confirm the President’s federal office appointees, and try federal officials impeached by the House. Senators serve staggered 6 year terms; every 2 years 1/3rd of the Senate is elected.

How does cancer actually kill people?

The cancerous cells require massive amounts of nutrients and energy to continue reproducing and building blood vessels to the newly formed cancer cells. The depletion of energy and nutrition from the rest of the body causes strain on other necessary processes and results in some of these processes shutting down or performing below standards required to support life. This effect gets snowballed until entire organs get damaged and destroyed.

What are these “Safe Zones” on college campus?

The idea of a safe space (as i understand it) is to create a plac where someone can go if they are in emotional distress, where they will not be judged or ridiculed. My college has these around campus, in places like RA’s rooms and a few offices. If a student needs to talk to someone and know that they will not be judged or bullied for their race/sexual orientation/whatever, they can go there. They are a great help for those who face those kinds of issues.

That said, not everywhere in the world is a safe space, and some groups are taking it too far in finding everything offensive. Colleges are and should be places where people can discuss ideas freely and openly (and respectfully), so classrooms and other areas are generally not safe spaces, and should not be. Safe spaces are places where people can go to get non-judgmental emotional support if they need it. They are not supposed to cover the entire world.

How do speakers work? How does all the sounds and frequencies at one single point in a song (drums, vocals, guitar, etc) can be created by one single vibration of a membrane. All at once?

All sounds are waves in a material. The wave is formed by compressing and expanding the material at some rate. If 2 things try to expand and compress the same piece of material then they will interfere.

Imagine someone is pushing and pulling on you. You will shake around. If a second person pushes and pulls on you then you will only shake in 1 pattern that is the result of both people pushing and pulling on you. So interference of sound waves results in a new sound wave. So if you record all the pieces of a band and all their sound waves, you can combine them into 1 new sound wave that when played back sounds like all the instruments playing together.

What is the difference between TRT and recreational/bodybuilding steroids?

TRT is typically administration of testosterone to produce body hormone levels in the normal physiological range. If you had been suffering from hypogonadosm you should see improvement in body conditioning while on TRT as you had been living at less than normal hormonal levels.

In short, Bodybuilders use both higher concentrations of testosterone to push their bodies past the physiological range and into the supra physiological levels as well as other androgen compounds like dbol, tren and others you mentioned. The purpose of this use is greater muscle gain, to be bigger, faster, stronger, depending on goals and compounds used.

Bodybuilders typically cycle or use varying concentrations and compounds in order to keep the body in a more healthy state and to limit negative side effects.

Why are furniture stores always “going out of business”?

It’s called artificial scarcity. It’s a psychological trick used by advertisers to get people to buy their products with the threat that “such a bargain” will not be available in the future.

It’s the same psychology behind “Call now. Supplies are limited. . .the first 50 callers in the next 15 minutes will receive an additional [item] for absolutely free. . .This offer is limited to the first 100 customers, so be sure to act now.”

Advertisers want you to act sooner than later to buy their products. The longer you go between seeing the ad and shopping with them, the lower the chances that you’ll buy something from them. So they up the stakes by making you think that you are gaining something by rushing into their store to buy their product.

What does America get out of its relationship with Israel?

  • Until just recently, Israel was virtually the CIA’s only source of human intel regarding the Middle East. Israel was surrounded by states that wanted it destroyed, so it had a vast network of spies. Any information they found that they thought was relevant for the US, they would share.

  • Israel co-develops a lot of military gear for the US. A lot of US military hardware is from Israel, like the LITENING Pods on fighters to allow them to perform precision ground strikes.

  • Israel is home to 6 massive US warstocks. These are bunkers full of guns, ammo, vehicles, and aircraft. They sit there in near ready conditions, in the event of all out war, the US can have stockpiles scattered around, making it virtually impossible to eliminate the US’ entire military arsenal.

  • US and Israel share a very close economic relationship. For example, Israel is the R&D home to multiple massive US companies, including IBM, Intel, and Microsoft. Also, there’s more Israeli companies on the US stock exchange than any other country outside of North America.

  • Israel allows the US to operate the Dimona Radar Facility, which is a ballistic missile tracking radar system. The range of which, completely covers the state of Iran, allowing the US to track virtually every single missile launched by them.

  • Israeli ports are considered 1 of the only ports in the Middle East US warships are allowed to visit, due to the level of security provided at them in relation to other nations’ ports.

Why are fights between players allowed in the NHL when it is very strongly prohibited in just about every other sport?

It helps to remember that fights in hockey are 99% consensual. If you don’t want to fight you turn your back and that’s it. There are players that fight and players that don’t, and it’s not really a machismo/honor thing that you MUST fight. No one thinks less of you for not being a fighter.

If you jump someone who is NOT looking for a fight you are usually going to get tossed from the game and probably suspended for a few games to boot. It’s not OK to blind-side someone who is not likewise spoiling for a fight and generally speaking that is frowned upon.

So the minor penalties and general lack of punishment is only in the case of two people who have collaboratively decided to go at it, which is true for almost every fight you see. They are pre-arranged (often at the face-off) and mutually agreed. At that point, two consenting adults doing what they want, basically, and the refs leave it alone until someone is at risk of getting seriously hurt — usually once someone goes down and it’s no longer a standing fight, or if other people are getting involved, or if one person is effectively incapacitated, etc.

To some degree hockey is a self-regulated game. Refs are there for line calls, not necessarily behavior control. 10 people flying around a small ice surface at 40km/h with wooden sticks can REALLY hurt each other while the ref is looking the other way if they want to.

To avoid this, fighting is used as a pressure relief… all the pent up aggression you feel for the wrongs and slights done to your team goes into cheering for your guy in the fight. Afterward everyone chills out. This is generally true even if the two guys fighting aren’t the actual guys you were mad at. But the thing is, everyone on your team is going to be mad at someone different for some random thing that happened, so it’s not practical to expect everyone will “pay” individually.

This mostly works because most players aren’t assholes. If they do something to earn your ire it was probably by accident or a “one time” thing. It’s unlikely you’ll remember it for more than 5 minutes and unlikely that guy is going to specifically tick you off again. So the fight serves to release the cumulative pressure of all those little things, not necessarily any specific incident.

Where this fails is if there is just that one total dick on a team that is constantly cheap-shotting people or otherwise behaving in a douchey way not consistent with the overall tone of the game. Especially if that person keeps doing it even after a fight or two. At some point the other team is going to remember his number and a “generic fight” won’t fix the issue. That guy now has a target painted on his back and at some point — maybe not even that game but in a future game — someone is going to risk getting tossed from the game/suspended to teach that specific player a lesson.

Though usually half of that guy’s own team are just as happy to watch him get creamed because, honestly, he IS a dick. We’d never say it out loud of course, team solidarity, rah rah rah… but at some point people get what they deserve and everyone on both sides knows it.

festival for dogs

Hey, China. This is the type of dog festival that people want to go to. The complete opposite of the Yulin Dog Meat Festival, the Tihar Festival celebrates man’s loyal best friend. In Nepal, Hindu citizens designate the festival as a time to shower their dogs with love and attention. You won’t see dogs crammed in cages or animal rights activists protesting, it is all about loving dogs in all their four-legged glory.

The festival comes at a time where all eyes are on another dog-themed festival, China’s Yulin festival, where more than 10,000 dogs are tortured, cooked and served up to festival goers. Yulin has been under intense criticism and protest. Many celebrities have spoke out against the horrible mistreatment of the animals. Comedian, Ricky Gervais, has spoke out extensively about the Yulin, but now he is sharing the joy of the Tihar festival.

Tihar is a five day Hindu festival, but the second day is reserved for our loyal companions. It is called Kukur Tihar or Kukur Puja (worship of the dogs).

There is an informal “Small Penis” rule, which authors use to protect themselves against libel lawsuits, by saying that a character they based off of someone else has a small penis, which stops most people from wanting to associate themselves with that character by suing the author

The “small penis rule” is an informal strategy used by authors to evade libel lawsuits. It was described in a New York Times article in 1998:

“…For a fictional portrait to be actionable, it must be so accurate that a reader of the book would have no problem linking the two,” said Mr. Friedman. Thus, he continued, libel lawyers have what is known as ‘the small penis rule.’ One way authors can protect themselves from libel suits is to say that a character has a small penis, Mr. Friedman said. “Now no male is going to come forward and say, ‘That character with a very small penis, that’s me!’ “

The small penis rule was referenced in a 2006 dispute between Michael Crowley and Michael Crichton. Crowley alleged that after he wrote an unflattering review of Crichton’s novel State of Fear, Crichton libeled him by including a character named “Mick Crowley” in the novel Next. In the novel, Mick Crowley is a child rapist, described as being a Washington-based journalist and Yale graduate with a small penis.

In 2005, Sony illegally installed rootkits on 22 million computers to prevent the users from ripping copyrighted music, and could not be uninstalled. It also reported user’s listening habits back to Sony. Ironically, the code itself contained open source software, and so infringed copyright

Sony BMG initially denied that the rootkits were harmful. It then released, for one of the programs, an “uninstaller” that only un-hid the program, installed additional software which could not be easily removed, collected an email address from the user, and introduced further security vulnerabilities.

China’s Great Leap Forward, a social engineering plan put forth by Mao Zedong in 1959, was the single most deadly event in human history, with an estimated 30 million lives lost

When Mao came to power in China, he had big plans to change his country. For all of it’s history, China was an agrarian nation, or farmers. Mao wanted to change this. He envisioned the poor farmers of China uniting to remake the country into a vast, modern industrial superpower, similar to the rise of the neighboring Soviets, whom Mao drew inspiration.

His program, called the great leap forward, involved taking millions of farmers off their fields into industrial collectives. Farmers where told to melt their ploughs and steel scrap into the tools of industry to make steel.

But obviously there is a problem, as a lifetime farmer doesn’t know anything about making steel. And when you take everyone off of farming and turn them into workers in a field they know nothing about, both farming and steel making fail.

Confessions Of A Victim Of Prison Rape

What were you incarcerated for?

Marijuana possession. Serving 18 months

Wow, possesing marijuana gets you locked up with the same kind of people that rape people. Unbelievable. How much did you get caught with?

I got busted because I had a small grow set-up that supplied a few friends. I was a tinkerer (I’m an engineer by profession) and I was curious about hydro. I never sold anything. I got caught because a friend of a friend claimed I was some major league dealer. My house was raided and they found all 10 of my plants. No guns, no other drugs, just a small basement set-up.

Was 18 months the full sentence or did you get out early? What was the full list of counts you were convicted of or was it a plea?

It was 3 years, plus some time off after one of the counts was tossed upon appeal.

Was it a county, state or federal facility. Do you know what the other inmates were there for and is there a system to separate the inmates?

I was in a state facility that was massively over-crowded. Whatever structures they had went out the window when they needed space.

How often would they rape you?

It went on for about three months, several times a week. I stopped counting after the 20th time

Where would the rapes occur?

My cell, the work area, the exercise area.

In your cell? Jesus. Were they your cellmates?

One was.

Did you ever just let them rape you, or did you always fight back? And, by repeatedly, how many times are you talking about? How many different instances?

After the 10th time I gave up fighting. I have scars on my neck and on my chest from where they cut me for fighting. Every time it was deeper and more damaging. I didn’t want to die. The raped me several times a week over the course of a few months.

Whats your build? Did you stand a chance in defending yourself?

5’10, about 170. Average. It’s not about defending yourself. Two guys, both with knives? You’re going down.

Was it similar to the scene in American History X? If not, are there any depictions in popular culture that are more accurate?

If “Oz” wasn’t set in those weird fish tank things, but in regular cells or solitary units, it would be DEAD ON

How many other inmates were in the same situation

A great many of them. Gay guys in prison are pretty rare, and very fucking popular.

How did the prison officials respond when you told them what was happening?

They told me to "document every event with an officer". I tried that. They would nod and walk away.

Was it possible to request a cell change? Mention the rapes, or at least that he was threatening you, and they should move you, right?

Tried, many times. Denied.

Could you have have asked for protective custody? Or ad seg (administrative segregation)?

I asked. Denied.

Why not opt for solitary confinement?

23 hours in a room with a slit for day light and one hour to walk around a box? I’d be a vegetable now.

You mentioned “Oz” was dead on and that they didn’t protect you from other inmates. Where did you sit in the cafeteria? with whom? Is prison as racially segregated as they depict?

I ate my meals in my cell. Very racially segregated.

How did you decide who to hire for protection? Did your guy offer his services to you or how did that work?

He had a reputation for doing this. Some guys were just known for offering protection, I asked, he told me how much and where to send the money every month, once I started paying he watched out for me.

How much did this protection cost?

$500/month and $5000 total

How exactly does one get a bribe into jail?

My family would send $500 bucks from my accounts to his people every month.

How exactly did he protect you? Did he ever kick the rapist’s ass or did you tell the rapists you had someone covering you or what?

He broke my cellmates arm in two places.

Did the guy that was protecting you follow you around or did he keep an eye on you wherever you’d go? Or did you follow him?

After initially breaking my cellmates arm he just let it be known I was not to be fucked with. He had connections with the skinheads, that went far.

Any problems after that? And did this happen right when you started paying him?

Nope, after he was "on the job" I never had a problem.

Did the guy who broke your cellmate’s arm get more time for doing so?

My cellmate claimed it happened in an accident in a work area. He stuck to that story, though it was clear the guards and admin thought otherwise.

After the broken arm, did they show you any sense of respect or at least fear? or a sense of wishing for revenge? or was it just, shrug/whatever, that’s the way it goes?

He acted like I was not even there.

Did he ever become a friend or just stayed as an acquaintance/bodyguard? (aka Still in contact?)

Fuck no, he’s still in jail. If I saw him IRL I’d run away.

How are you now?

I’m day to day. I used to freak out thinking people could just look at me an KNOW I’d been raped. Now, I could give a fuck what people think of me. The situation made me stronger, but colder.

Are you currently in/seeking therapy? Do you find it helpful to talk about the experience? Have you shared it with anyone else in your life?

I’m in therapy yes. No one else knows about this but me.

If no one else knows it, what did your family members think they were paying for?

I told them I was getting threatened and my food stolen. I think, deep down, they knew. But we never talk about it.

Did you catch anything , STD wise?

Thankfully, no, I’m clean. Though I plan on getting tested every 3 months for the next few years. Peace of mind, HIV is sneaky.

How are your relationships with women now? Have you been in a relationship since your release, or any kind of sexual encounter? What’s it been like, is it traumatic or…I dunno, fulfilling or comforting in some way? Do you get flashbacks or anxiety attacks?

I have some anxiety. I don’t like anything sharp near me. I had a check-up last month and nearly flipped out when I saw the needle. I hate being locked in anywhere, need to know I can leave at a moment’s notice. I’ve only had sex with sex workers since my release. I’m a regular with a couple in my town. I don’t think I could handle a relationship.

Did the experience affect your sexuality in any way?

I’m only comforable with sex workers. I need to feel that I can end everything at any second and just leave, no need to explain. I have a couple women I see regularly, they both get it. I mean, I could be right in the middle of sex and just need to go, get out, almost run. How can you have a relationship like that?

I’m doing therapy, it’s getting better, but I don’t want to dump my shit on a relationship.

Has this incident changed your opinion on people in general? Do you find it harder to build relationships now that you’re out? I imagine as a male to be victimized in this way it would be hard to cope with at times, is it?

I’m less trusting. My cell mate played like a friend at first, got my guard down. I moved out of state, left most of my friends behind, but I’ve made a number of new ones here. My only sexual contact is with sex workers. I trust them, it’s safe and I make enough money to engage them regularly.

How are you managing to function as a human being? I don’t think I would want to live after something like that…hard enough watching the rape scene in American History X…

I watch comedies and animal shows man. I don’t even like cop shows these days. Life is too fucking short for all that dark shit.

I’m curious why people don’t sue the prison for not protecting them, especially when it happens so frequently.

Inmates do, all the time. The media ignores them, the public thinks prison rape is a joke and they system could give a fuck. "Let the animals kill each other" is the mindset

Are you going to sue the state? if it was a private prison, can you sue them?

No point. Juries could care less, the state would just call me a liar, courts are weighted against inmates in every way. Guys who are innocent can’t sue the DAs who fucked them. I was guilty, what chance do I have? Waste of time and money for me.

Do you have advice for other men out there should they happen to go to prison?

Honestly, buy some protection. The guy who watched out for me was on a 5 year bit for robbery and was a fucking skin-head crazy fucker, but the first time one of my rapists laid a hand on me, my guy broke his arm in two places. Worth every fucking penny.
