Confessions Of A Former Drug Dealer

What drug did you sell?

Heroin. Well, it started off years earlier with ecstasy then I moved to cocaine then prescription pills and finally to heroin. I was chasing the biggest profits. When I was selling ecstasy it was because that was my favorite drug and I wanted a little bit of extra money to compliment my regular job. By the time I was selling dope and prescription pills, I had a whole organization and this was my full time job.

What quality/type of heroin did you end up selling?

The highest quality black tar heroin. The connect was so low level that we had to warn people when switching over from another dealer. I know everybody says that but we had a lot of close calls. It was dark almost black but a drier charcoal like that would crumble and turned into dark brown tar when handled or breathed on.

What is the profit margin on heroin?

On pills, a 30mg oxycodone instant release sells for about $15 where I live and I gave my pharmacist $5/each. Dilaudid 8mg sold for a similar $15 or sometimes 10 for $120 and I gave my pharmacist $4 each for those. High quality dope sells for anywhere from $120-150/g (or $30-40 for .2) in my location and my first connect was for $80/g – though as I moved up and got introduced to higher level people, that price dropped to $40/g (and remember my market was $30-40 for a .2) and my prices stayed similar. Dope and pills are where the money is. Margins aren’t bad on coke and such ($25/g wholesale and $50/g retail) but dope fiends have to come back every day. They don’t feel like they have a choice in the matter.

How does the process work? do you buy drugs from some larger organization then move them to your "market" or did you manufacture as well? How does one make the connections and go about buying large sums of heroin etc?

A combination of good luck and just networking. It’s not easy for a white guy in this particular field. The Mexicans control the heroin trade where I live and they don’t trust white guys. My first connect for dope was one that sought out because I couldn’t get enough pills to keep up with demand. It was a white guy who had gained the trust of a Mexican woman and was basically middle-manning it for me. He got arrested and they realized that I was the one moving most of his product. They approached me and I got my first Mexican connect. After my first arrest, they realized I could hold my mud (not tell dirt on everyone) and my connect’s boss approached me and that’s how I got down to near Mexican level prices ($35-40/gram) because normally even the white guys who can buy from Mexican suppliers don’t pay the same as Mexicans. So, yeah, luck, balls, and willingness to protect your own I guess.

How do the drugs and money change hands? Do you shop up at Mr. Mexicans door with a wallet full of hundreds and place a box full of drugs in your trunk? Or by the end did you even touch the product directly?

At the beginning, I went personally to all deals and I stuck ounces of heroin in my butt cheeks. They were wrapped repeatedly. Don’t worry. But yeah, by the end, I very rarely touched the dope. I had runners and a partner I trusted to meet the connect. I was almost mostly selling to smaller dealers who use to be my customers. I did very few individual sales, even through my partner in the end. He had made a spot within the fuse box in the engine bay of his car so at some point he would stop shortly after leaving the connects house at a gas station and moved the what was now a quarter pound per reup from on his person to this spot attached to the fusebox and he would drive with it under the hood until he got home. We’d move it into the apartment nonchalantly at some point and chop it up for sale.

Every dealer I have ever known has hid the reup under his hood. The police are on to this, right?

The biggest assumption is that you are being pulled over because they know what you are doing. Usually its just a regular traffic stop. Two, you carry in your ass until you get away from the connect to make sure nobody was waiting right away. And lastly, we had created a compartment underneath the traditional spots. But in the end if they know what you are doing, the dogs will find it. It’s to prevent accidental discoveries. I’ve also swallowed 12 grams of dope once following a certain nudie massage.

What percent was cut? What did you use to cut?

I did not cut my product at all. Because I was getting it from a very low level dealer, I suspect it was cut very little before I got it either. I took over the market on the basis of quality – and to top it off quality at a lower price because of how far down the ladder I had went to get it.

Wouldn’t that be up the ladder? Generally you climb the corporate ladder…in this case it seems like you sorta climbed the cartel ladder.

Sorry you do climb the ladder but generally the closer to the source it is, it’s called a low level connect.

How did people find you?

I built up a pretty large clientele through other drugs first. Some of them made the switch. The biggest of those were my pill clients. Almost 100% of them made the switch to heroin. If you go to any college campus, the pill clients are not hard to find. In addition, my supply was Mexican and many other Mexicans started picking up from me because it was simple and the traditional Mexican suppliers require much larger up front purchases than the average dope fiend can handle. So my clientele was all over the place. The two major groups were well-to-do college students and poor Mexicans.

How did you do deals? In your own home, on the street, at the buyers location of choice? Cell phone or face to face to initiate a deal?

We had a dope spot initially where people could come to the apartment. After it got hot, we switched to delivery only and a couple things like dummy cars and other shit. Burner cell phone changed every two weeks to avoid wiretaps – though I don’t know how likely they were as there were no recorded conversations at our court discovery that I knew about. Maybe that’s because of the precautions. Maybe it’s because its more difficult than I know.

What’s the most amount of cash you have made in a week?

I averaged about $25,000/month by the end and we came up from about $100/day when we first started selling ecstasy.

How did you handle that kind of money (25k/month)? You can’t just walk into a bank and deposit that.

We spent it as fast as we made it many cases, I reinvested a lot of it into other ventures and more drugs, I did deposit some of it, I paid tuition and rent for me and my girlfriend, I bought a car, bought a second car just for work, lots of things like vacations and nice clothes. But basically we just went through it. A lot got seized at the end in product and cash. I made off with a little bit and have been living off it and watching it dwindle. Maybe that’s why I started these memoirs. It’s just another hustle.

Were you smart enough to take some of that money and bury it somewhere? Please god say yes, my brain would hurt if you didn’t set up a nest egg that no one but you knows about.

I got away with some money. Alot was spent. Alot was seized. That money is slowly dwindling but is paying for mine and my girlfriends tuition. She has stuck by me through this whole thing and she’s the love of my life.

I always wondered how people who made a lot of money selling drugs managed to push so much product. Do you have several hundred clients, or sell to a few dealers who would sell to others? I suppose for heroin you would just need a number of daily users, but what about the rest?

I had probably 20-30 clients. When people hear that number it is always smaller than they expect. But with dope they are daily clients. Also it is deceiving because I force those people to pick up for their friends that I don’t want to meet and some of them are dealers and resellers. As far as the rest, even 20-30 is decent because of the profit margins but you do need more the less you force them to resell for their friends or the less dealers you have working for you making their own customers. My five or six dealers I had on my team all had their own clients so a sale is a sale is a sale.

Did you carry a firearm? If so, ever use it?

I did not carry a firearm. I did keep a combat knife of sorts around the house after an incident I talked about before where some rival Mexicans ran up in my house while my girlfriend was present.

Did your Mexican associates offer you protection? OR did your Mexican associates put you in uncomfortable situations, or were they professional and businesslike?

After that incident, my connect provided me with a guy for muscle and this was probably the point where I started doing more Mexican sales because the enforcer wanted in on sales as well. The Mexicans I worked for were always very businesslike. My primary connect at the end couldn’t have been any older than me and was very clean cut with a nice home and a BMW 7 Series. That muscle guy is in jail now as part of the raids in October but I am close with his family and I stay with them when visiting.

So as you can see they were very businesslike (the La Eme associates anyways) but there is a certain amount of drama that happened just because of the association. Taxes to the local Eme boss, rival gangs who don’t listen to directives, etc. My connect was Mexican Mafia (La Eme) but I was white. I wasnt required to pay taxes. But I lived on the westside and the westsiders worked with and protected me but the eastsiders ignored the Mafia and caused me drama all the time. Either they claimed I owed taxes or they just thought they could take advantage of the soft white boy.

There was one incident where I was ran up on at knife point. I talk about it in a few locations around this topic. I didn’t ever own a firearm. I was probably unwilling to fire it and that it is just a bad combo. I did eventually keep a knife around and this Mexican guy who was originally sent to me after the incident ended up living with me permanently and I became close to him and his family. He was actually half mexican/half white but all westsider and he grew up with only the Mexican side of his family because the father abandoned them.

Did you find that most of the time you were stressed, experiencing sleepless nights, etc.

It came and went. Certainly the best times I had were vacations with my girlfriend and when I learned to delegate and trust my partner more.

What do you think about the people you sold too?

They represented a very wide spectrum of people. Some were dope fiend thieves, many were college students or poor Mexicans. Some had trust funds and college funds, others stole from their girlfriends. I had this one group – four of them all from the same company who came to my house on their lunch breaks and fixed or got well. Some came back after work too. They were respectable business people at a legit tech company. It was funny, they kept it from each other for a while. Even their manager. Then eventually they all found out about each other.

Did you ever use the drugs?

I’d like to say that I never used the drugs. That’s the cool thing to do in movies and rap music, right? Never get high on your own supply. But the truth is that I suffered from pretty severe heroin withdrawal when I quit selling and using. It’s too easy to pass the time by using when you are bored and have reached a certain point.

How did you manage to get through college while on heroin? In the period you were a user yourself, did you use a lot?

It’s not nearly as debilitating as everyone expects. And after a while, a regular or small amount just gets you normal. I feel more active and talkative after getting high. The early user nod out or dick in the dirt moments stop happening as frequently or you just know yourself and do a "get well" dose and then get loaded after class.

Did you have any other big scares before you got arrested?

Ammusingly the first time I got arrested in April, I was accepting a nudie massage for a small bit of dope while waiting to reup. Long story. Lol. After that incident, there were a lot of close calls and it became a bit of a game of cat and mouse. I only got charged with possession and drug paraphernalia the first time and we thought we were staying one step ahead of them. I had some close calls with being followed, stopped and questioning, and in general the lead detective just wouldn’t leave me alone. What we didn’t know for a while though was that they had a snitch and this was a long-haul investigation. I also became increasingly paranoid during this time.

How did you end up getting arrested?

My pill supplier was a pharmacy manager who used an insurance scheme to make pills disappear from the pharmacy. They were investigating him and the first time I got arrested, I got caught up in that whole investigation. I was getting a nudie massage when the police showed up and I was arrested for possession and paraphernalia. I ultimately kept going because those charges were expunged but by then, people were talking and they had a snitch who said I was selling everything. A larger investigation was launched and ultimately my organization came down in a series of raids and the case was mostly made by snitches aka informants.

Did you roll on your supplier?

As far as this investigation went, I was the top of the supply chain. Only myself and one other person knew the supplier and neither of us rolled. We tipped off everyone involved. We are in tighter now than ever and have access to bigger things even but we both chose to stay away.

What did you ultimately get charged with?

My pill supplier was a pharmacy manager who used an insurance scheme to make pills disappear from the pharmacy. They were investigating him and the first time I got arrested in April, I got caught up in that whole investigation. I was getting a nudie massage when the police showed up and I was arrested for possession and paraphernalia. I ultimately kept going because those charges were expunged but by then, people were talking and they had a snitch who said I was selling everything. A larger investigation was launched and ultimately my organization came down in a series of raids in October and the case was mostly made by snitches aka informants. There was very little physical evidence and my partner and I both copped pleas to lesser charges (originally trafficking, intent to sell, etc.) and drug rehabilitation (we were selling to support our habit allegedly) and this allowed us both to get probation and NA meetings rather than jail time because we had no priors. I assume they didn’t want to test their snitches on the stand. I don’t know. Some states are just very lenient with drug offenders. Especially those with no priors who are doing other things in their lives. I was very depressed and assumed because of the first time around, they were not going to accept the plea deal but they did. Three years felony probation and 6 months of NA meetings. They also took almost every dime I had so I am broke as well. So it wasn’t a complete wash for them.

How the hell did you get away with three years of probation and drug rehab?

When I got arrested, I had a fraction of this. Their case was built on informants that they did not want to take the stand. I explained this. I also explained that however my former partner got caught with a quarter pound of the dope and he got more serious charges including trafficking across county lines but even he got the same type of deal and reduction with expunge. Some states are more lenient than others. Especially when you have other things going on in and life and rehabilitation and re-entry to the normal world is expected rather than the exception. I was a student, good gpa, did charity work, and sending me to prison would have just made me a career criminal. At the end of my probation, I was eligible for a drug rehab program and the record is to be expunged. Same is true of my former partner.

Do you think all or certain drugs should be legalized?

All of them. Both of my brothers are dope fiends and I cry sometimes thinking about the trouble they’ve been in and the time in jail they’ve spent because we treat this as a criminal problem rather than the health problem that it is. This is coming from somebody who has seen both sides of the fence.

So what are your opinions on The Wire?

It is probably the only realistic portrayal of drug dealing I have seen. It’s fantastic. The college scene works a bit differently but that is how it was around the cities I grew up in.

How was the college scene different?

You don’t really have corner boys. It all works through a series of referrals and friends of friends. I only had 20-30 direct clients but I forced them to pick up from their friends. Only if a friend of theirs became a very regular and good business customer would I sometimes meet them and take on a new customer.

Do you have any regrets about how you ran your business?

Yeah, there were things we could have done. People I had gut feelings about that I should have followed. Never ran a dope spot and ran delivery games from the beginning. My best friend protecting me is a sore spot too since he got the more serious charges (but still gets to expunge them later) and a few other things. But overall I don’t regret the experience.

If could go back in time and you had the knowledge now of the investigation that was being carried out on you and the snitch and you could completely avoid being caught as you were. Would you still go ahead with it or completely avoid the scene?

If I could avoid being caught, yeah. Like I said, I don’t regret the experience. I regret the peoples lives who were destroyed. I regret certain decisions but not the experience as a whole. I did things I would have never got to do traditionally within my socio-economic status.

Did you ever get depressed when you stopped selling and all the highs that in itself brought?

I talked about this in one of my NA meetings. It was miserable not being THAT guy anymore. Not being a boss. Not being recognized. Not skipping the lines at the night club or being able to do or buy what I wanted. I felt so alive selling drugs. I know that sounds bad but its true.

The Art Of David Choe Is Seriously Awesome!

What A Sumo Wrestler Eats Daily

$

It’s ironic that the national sport of Japan—who’s inhabitants are some of the skinniest and most gentle in the world—involves two overweight men trying to shove each other out of a ring.

The truth is that it’s not just flab that makes a sumo wrestler’s girth; there’s a whole lot of muscle underneath it all.

The ideal weight for a sumo wrestler is anything from 400 to 600 pounds. This means that it takes not only strength and flexibility to be a sumo—it also takes the right diet. Eating is an essential part of their training.

Sumo-size me

A typical sumo wrestler eats a daily diet of 20,000 calories, which is pretty astounding when you consider that the recommended daily intake for a healthy, active male is 2,500. They eat 10 times what a normal male eats and all of it’s done in two massive 10,000-calorie meals. The sumo’s diet is an expression of my favorite Japanese cultural trait—never doing things halfway.

Here is a typical sumo wrestler daily eating schedule:

Skip breakfast

A sumo wrestler’s day starts at four or five o’clock in the morning with training and exercise. Surprisingly, breakfast is not served. Skipping breakfast and working out instead slows down the wrestler’s metabolism, so they usually don’t eat until around 11am. It also gets them hungry enough for that 10,000-calorie lunch.

Bulk load

The main dish that sumo wrestlers eat is a stew called chankonabe (ちゃんこ鍋). It sounds a little like ‘chunk nabe,’ which is somehow oddly appropriate. This is a stew filled with fish, vegetables, meat and tofu. Nabe (鍋) is a traditional Japanese stew, but chankonabe is the supersized version, stuffed full of extra everything for the sole purpose of providing calories.

Chankonabe sumo meal

by Philip Seyfi

To complement their mighty meal, sumo wrestlers eat around 5–10 bowls of rice and copious amounts of beer, required for empty calories. A healthy rikishi (力士, sumo wrestler) may down as many as 6 pints during the midday meal.

Take a siesta

After lunch, there’s one more essential bit of training—the nap. How could you not pass out after a meal like that? Sumo wrestlers take a siesta for as long as 4 hours after lunch, in order to slow down their metabolism and add everything they just ate to their girth.

Dinner and lights out

At the end of the day, sumo wrestlers eat another massive meal and call it a night. While they sleep, the day’s protein and calories work their magic and they wake up in the early morning ready to smash their bodies against each other.

Chankonabe: Recommended by sumo wrestlers – it has to be good

Although hearty, chankonabe is actually quite healthy. It’s not your triple Whopper or deep-fried pizza. The stew is full of fresh veggies, tofu, fish and either pork, chicken or beef. In case they aren’t full after the goodies are eaten and there’s just soup left, the sumo often dump a pile of noodles into the bowl.

You can eat chankonabe at restaurants throughout Japan. It comes in a number of different flavours including salt, soy sauce, miso, kimchee and more. Just bring a good appetite.

The restaurants in the Ryogoku area of Tōkyō, known as “Sumo Town” because it’s the home of the Japan Sumo Association, are particularly popular. You can also find other restaurants there that tailor to rikishi and serve ridiculously large dishes of curry and other typical meals.

A Breakdown Of All The Different Soccer Positions For All Those That Just Jumped On The World Cup Bandwagon, Like Myself

Goalkeeper (GK)

The goalkeeper is simply known as the guy with gloves who keeps the opponents from scoring. He has a special position because only him can play the ball with his hands (provided that he is inside his own penalty area and the ball was not deliberately passed to him by a team mate).

Aside from being the last line of defense, the goalkeeper is the first person in attack. That is why keepers who can make good goal kicks and strategic ball throws to team mates are valuable.

The goalie has four main roles: saving, clearing, directing the defense, and distributing the ball. Saving is the act of preventing the ball from entering the net while clearing means keeping the ball far from the goal area.

The goalkeeper has the role of directing the defense since he is the farthest player at the back and he can see where the defenders should position themselves.

Distributing the ball happens when a goalkeeper decides whether to kick the ball or throw it after making a save. Where the keeper throws or kicks the ball is the first instance of attack.

Some of history’s finest goalkeepers are Lev Yashin, Gordon Banks, Dino Zoff, Peter Schmeichel, and Gianluigi Buffon.

Defenders

A defender’s task is to keep the ball away from the keeper, prevent opposing attackers from passing or receiving, and block shots. Defending requires a player to be well-fit, hard-working, and quick at anticipating the movement of the opponents.

Defenders must protect the keeper: they should think of the goalie as an important person that opponents are not allowed to get near to. Typically, teams play with four defenders.

  • Center-back/center-half/central defender (CB)

In a four-player defense, the center-backs are the two defenders in the middle. They are erroneously called center-halves, because in an obsolete football formation called the 2-3-5, the “3” players are designated with that name. As tactics evolved, the “3” dropped to “center-back” but still retained the name “center-half.”

A center back must be strong, fearless, and good at timing tackles. Being tall is an advantage for a center-back as it allows him to win the ball in the air, an essential skill in corner kick situations.

Ronald Koeman, Fabio Cannavaro, and Franco Baresi are some of the greatest center backs of all time.

  • Full-back (LB, FB)

A full-back is a defender positioned on the side. They are either classified as left back (LB) or right back (RB). The defenders positioned between them are called centerbacks.

The full-back is tasked to prevent opponents from attacking on the sides. He must be quick and must be able to prevent opponents from making a cross. He is often assigned to mark the opposing winger.

  • Wing-back (LWB, RWB)

A wing-back is a full-back that advances up to the opponent’s goal end. He runs the whole length of the football pitch: he defends the flanks like a dedicated full-back and attacks like a winger. This is the most physically demanding position on the field. Cafu and Roberto Carlos are two of the best wing-backs ever.

  • Sweeper (SW)

A sweeper is located at the back of the defensive line, just in front of the keeper. This position is no longer popularly used in the modern game but was popular in the past especially with the catenaccio system of Italy.

A sweeper’s task is to clear the ball in case it breaks through the defenders. He does not man-mark an opponent so he can collect loose balls or go upfield to bring the ball forward in attack. The German football legend Franz Beckenbauer is the most remarkable of all sweepers.

Midfielders

Midfielders link the offense and the defense: they bring the ball up to the forwards in attack and prevent the ball from reaching the defenders when not in possession. You can think of them as the telephone line that connects two people.

Without a solid midfield, it is very difficult for the forwards to score and the defense is often put at risk of the opponents’ attacks. Below are the many types of midfielders and the roles they perform.

  • Defending/Holding midfielder (DM)

A defending or holding midfielder is stationed just in front of the defensive line. His responsibility is to prevent the ball from reaching the defensive line. He must be skilled at intercepting passes, tackling the ball, and positioning themselves strategically. Claude Makelele and Dunga are two of the great holding midfielders.

  • Central/Box-to-box midfielder (CM)

A central midfielder is stationed at the center of the field. If he plays both offense and defense, he is called a box-to-box midfielder. The name implies that he runs from his own penalty box to the opponent’s to fulfill different roles.

A box-to-box midfielder does the following: create opportunities for the striker and stop the opponent’s attacks. Stamina, technical ability, and relentless hard-work are the attributes of this type of midfielder.  Steven Gerrard is the best box-to-box midfielder of his era.

  • Attacking midfielder/playmaker (AM)

The attacking midfielder is an advanced midfield player who is primarily inclined to attack. He must have excellent ball control abilities and tactical awareness.

A playmaker occupies the same position as an attacking midfielder but performs a different role. This guy is considered the brain of the team, the most skilled player who orchestrates the attack and distributes the ball. A playmaker must be good in decision-making and as the football saying goes: when you don’t know what to do with the ball, you pass it to him.

The playmaker often wears the number 10 jersey. Some of the most famous playmakers in football are Zico, Zinedine Zidane, and Juan Riquelme.

  • Wide midfielders/wingers (LW, RW)

The winger plays the same role as the attacking midfielder but he focuses his attacks from the side. This position is often utilized in “odd” formations like 4-3-3 and 4-5-1.

Since the winger often plays between the midfield and the offensive line, he is sometimes classified as a forward. A player who occupies this position must be fast, have excellent dribbling abilities, and accurate with passes.

A modern winger is typically flexible and can attack from the center, which makes him take over the role of a forward. Ryan Giggs and Garrincha are two excellent examples of wide midfielders.

Forwards

Forwards are the most celebrated players in the team because they are often the ones who score goals. Since there are many ways to score a goal, there are also many types of forwards.

Accuracy, head ability, and ball control are the typical qualities of a forward. A forward does not have to as much work as the midfield or defense but he must be able to convert when his teammates give him the ball.

  • Center-forward/striker (CF)

Center-forwards are positioned closest to the opponent’s goal. They have two roles: first, they score goals through passes from teammates; second, they distract the defense to give room for the attacking midfielder, winger, or withdrawn striker to attack.

A striker must be brilliant at receiving and controlling the ball, must be strong, and capable of winning the ball in the air. Skills at playing with the back to the goal is a prerequisite. Some of the greatest strikers of all time are Batistuta, Ruud van Nistelrooy, and Ronaldo.

  • Withdrawn striker/deep-lying forward/second forward (WS)

The withdrawn striker plays behind the forward. It is typical in attacking football strategies to put him as the main scorer while the person in front of him serves as decoy. The deep-lying forward is often utilized in the 4-4-2 formation.

A deep-lying forward must have excellent passing skills as he is expected to feed the striker and at the same time possess technical abilities with the ball as he often receives back passes from the striker. Pele played as second striker during his illustrious career.

  • Other types of forwards

Some strikers are further distinguished by their playing style, not just by where they stay on the field.

The “off-the-shoulder” striker is a center-forward who is very skilled at breaking the offside trap and frees himself to face one-on-one with the goalkeeper. He is called such because he often positions himself parallel with the opposing defenders’ shoulders (in line with the second-to-the-last defender). Davor Suker of Croatia and Thierry Henry of France are off-the-shoulder strikers.

The goal poacher is a type of striker who often scores goal from inside the opponent’s penalty area. He does not create his own opportunities but relies on passes and second-chances to score goals. The poacher often capitalizes on the mistake of the defense. Examples of goal poachers are David Trezeguet and Pippo Inzaghi.

The Effects Of War Does Not Begin And End On The Battlefield…The Story of Scott Ostrom: Ex-Marine with PTSD

$

0

In an attempt to calm a panic attack in his Boulder apartment, Scott Ostrom cups his hand over his mouth. After his honorable discharge from the Marines, Ostrom has struggled with daily life, from finding employment to maintaining healthy relationships.

Scott Ostrom counts the stitches in his wrist a few days after he attempted suicide. He believes that every combat vet struggling with PTSD has a contingency plan. "Every one of us has a suicide plan. We all know how to kill, and we all have a plan to kill ourselves."

Scott is comforted by a friend during an argument with his girlfriend over the phone. Sitting on the bed, he started crying, later comparing the relationship to the stress of combat. "Sometimes I get into fights. It’s not a talking thing for me. I handle it like a Marine, like it’s a combat situation," Scott said. "Being diagnosed with PTSD is an interesting thing. … It means I have nightmares every night. It means I’m hyper-vigilant — means I’m weird about noises in the middle of the night and lock my doors. It means I have no fuse and if I get attacked, I’m going to kill. … I don’t want to feel this way."

Ostrom in his apartment. Says Walker, “Scott’s girlfriend had packed up all her things and taken his anxiety and sleep medications. It brought on a panic attack and he had no medication for it. When I arrived he was pleading with his girlfriend to return his medications. Then he stood up and walked away. As I got up to follow, I heard this incredible crash. He was punching his door. He hit it four or five times; he basically destroyed it. That was the first time I really saw him going through it. As photographers we try to become invisible, but Scott was so focused on his troubles it was like tunnel vision. I started to question if I was actually there.”

A picture of Scott holding his little brother after graduating boot camp at Paris Island, S.C., in June 2003 hangs on the refrigerator at Scott’s new apartment. "I was happy after boot camp. I knew I was going to do something. My parents were proud of me." He talked about why he signed up. "I had just totaled my truck. I was like, ‘Do I really want to take the bus to work every day for $10 an hour and live in a crappy apartment?’ I was going to end up in jail or doing drugs. So instead of going to work one day, I just took the bus to the recruiting station." Scott said he was not aware of the looming war in Iraq when he signed up. "I was 18 years old. I didn’t watch the news. … I didn’t care. I just wanted to do something."

Scott Ostrom, with his honorable discharge papers and good conduct medal, in a Westminster, CO, housing complex. His apartment application was turned down because his background check turned up an assault charge from a recent bar fight. “You would think this would be worth something. It should be. It’s not, though,” said Ostrom before tossing the papers across the table. As Ostrom got up to leave, the manager apologized and said, “Thank you for your service.” Scott went outside and muttered, “Thank you for your service. Thank you for your f—ing service."

During their breakup Scott tries to leave his apartment as his girlfriend seizes his glasses. "She steals my glasses because I can’t see without them. She antagonizes me. She does it to push my buttons, but I’m not going to do anything. I’m not going to hit her." As soon as she entered, she immediately began carrying things to her car. "I dated this girl for almost two years, and it was the most tumultuous relationship I have ever had in my life. It was the closest thing that got me back to the levels of stress I had in combat," Scott said.

After a sleepless night, Scott stands at his window as he waits for his girlfriend to pick up all her things on May 24, 2011. He had rekindled the relationship and regretted it. "There’s no winning. I can’t walk out of the situation. … I feel like I’m constantly in combat," he said. He recalls his marriage before his second deployment to Iraq. "They told us it was going to be serious. And I thought I want to get married before I die. So I found this girl, fell in love." Ultimately the relationship added more stress to his time at war, "I found out that the girl I fell in love with and married was sleeping with a professor."

Ostrom lies on the floor with his dog, Jibby. “Scott called and said, ‘Hey Craig, I’m not doing anything today so there’s no point in coming out.’ I said, ‘I’ll be there in half an hour.’ His depression could cripple him for days at a time.”

Ostrom laughs with Marine Sgt. Dean Sanchez of the Wounded Warrior Regiment while shopping for a suit. “Sanchez was instrumental in saving my life,” Ostrom told Walker. “When he couldn’t help me, he put me in touch with the people that could. Sanchez is there to make me proud to be a Marine.”

Scott talks with his attorney, Christopher Griffin, after a court appearance at the Boulder County Justice Center on June 16, 2011. Scott had been charged with third-degree assault but ultimately pleaded guilty to harassment. A violation of a protection order was dismissed, and he pleaded guilty to driving while ability impaired. Griffin said he was greatly concerned for soldiers returning from war. "We send these kids off to war — we make them see things people otherwise wouldn’t have to see. Then we expect them to come back and behave like the rest of us. It’s breaking my heart, and we have to do something about it. As far as criminal justice goes, we need to look at these people differently."

Ostrom shops for a tie for his upcoming training for a job at The Cheesecake Factory. While initially determined to do well, he worried that his anxiety and personal life would affect his job. They did. He quit the job three months later.

Scott watches as his girlfriend struggles to carry his Tempur-Pedic mattress from his apartment. She’d arrived to pick up her belongings but was taking his bed because she said she paid for it. After a 15-minute struggle with the heavy mattress, she gave up and left in a rage. He said the relationship was exactly what he needed at that time in his life. "I needed someone to affirm the way I felt about myself. … I felt like if I stayed with that person long enough and received enough punishment, then I have in some way sought redemption for my actions overseas in Iraq."

Ostrom drinks a beer in the parking lot of a VFW post in Longmont, CO. “Scott decided he wanted to go out and spend some time with other veterans,” says Walker. “He figured he’d go to the VFW post, but he didn’t know a lot about it. But when he called them to ask about it, the bartender gave him attitude. Scott called me to say, ‘I’m pissed and I’m going down there to finish this argument in person.’ When he got there they were closed. I arrived to find him drinking alone in the parking lot.”

Scott watches an evening storm roll in outside his apartment on July 27, 2011. "I’m just feeling guilty about the things I did. I was a brutal killer, and I rejoiced in it. I was bred to be a killer, and I did it. Now I’m trying to adapt and feel human again. But to feel human, I feel guilty. I did horrible things to people, just to be evil. That’s why I can’t eat: I feel guilty, I feel sick."

Ostrom begins a day gripped by a panic attack. He says his hands and feet tingle, his arms and legs feel detached: “I’m short of breath and my chest is painfully tight.” He said the day before was one long panic attack and that this day was starting out similarly.

Having woken from a neighbor’s barking dog, Scott desperately searches his phone for a number to call Animal Control on Oct. 25, 2011. Scott was anxious to enroll in a residential PTSD program at Denver’s VA Medical Center and planned to go there later in the day. Scott, weighing 140 pounds — down 45 pounds from his normal weight — found his appetite and stress were directly related. He said he didn’t even think about food and hadn’t eaten very well for months.

Scott Ostrom waits outside the pharmacy at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Denver. After taking stock of Ostrom’s mental state, a doctor gave him a prescription for an antipsychotic medication. "I was terrified. I couldn’t control my own thoughts," he said. Two months later, Ostrom was accepted into the PTSD Residential Rehabilitation Program at the medical center. "Eventually," he said, "you get to a point where you just … break down. The only other option is to put a hand out and ask for help."

20 Quotes About Failure That Will Inspire You To Succeed

by ZOË B

If Thomas Edison had believed in failure… we would still be living in darkness. If Henry Ford had given up, we would still be riding on horseback…if Alexander Graham Bell had given in to the clutches of failure, we would be spending less time staring at those small plastic things we call phones that rule our lives (which might not be a bad thing!).

On a serious note – anyone who has achieved ANYTHING great, anyone who has CHANGED THE WORLD has at some point made a choice to embrace failure instead of fighting it.

If you look at the most inspirational innovators, athletes, geniuses, and icons throughout history, they all shared a common belief – they simply did not entertain the notion of failure as a bad thing.

Instead, they understood that every failure encountered brings you one step closer to success, and that this is a natural part of the process. Some even enjoyed failure!

If you think about it, failure is just feedback; it’s simply showing you what’s not working so you can find out what will work. It’s necessary and can’t be avoided.

If we didn’t have failure, how would we know what to do next? The process of learning from our mistakes is truly invaluable, and is something we need to run toward, not run away from.

Below are a selection of quotes on the topic of failure from 20 iconic people, each of whom has achieved something great and is talking from his or her own unique experience.

Today, let’s celebrate these wonderful souls who chose to embrace failure with open arms. Maybe, just maybe, their words of wisdom will help us to do the same.

1. “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” – Thomas Edison

2. “Success is the ability to go from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm.” – Winston Churchill

3. “Failure is only the opportunity to begin again, only this time more wisely.” – Henry Ford

4. “Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising every time we fail.” – Confucious

5. “In order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure.” – Bill Cosby

6. “Develop success from failures. Discouragement and failure are two of the surest stepping stones to success.” – Dale Carnegie

7. “Failure is success if we learn from it.” – Malcolm Forbes

8. “I’ve come to believe that all my past failure and frustrations were actually laying the foundation for the understandings that have created the new level of living I now enjoy.” - Tony Robbins

9. “There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work and learning from failure.” – Colin Powell

10. “It is fine to celebrate success, but it is more important to heed the lessons of failure.” – Bill Gates

11. “Every adversity, every failure, every heartache carries with it the seed of a greater or equal benefit.” – Napoleon Hill

12. “Like success, failure is many things to many people. With Positive Mental Attitude, failure is a learning experience, a rung on the ladder, a plateau at which to get your thoughts in order and prepare to try again.” – W. Clement Stone

13. “The only real failure in life is not to be true to the best one knows.” – Buddha

14. “My great concern is not whether you have failed, but whether you are content with failure.” – Abraham Lincoln

15. “Don’t be afraid to fail. Don’t waste energy trying to cover up failure. Learn from your failures and go on to the next challenge. It’s ok to fail. If you’re not failing, you’re not growing.” – H. Stanley Judd

16. “Think like a queen. A queen is not afraid to fail. Failing is another steppingstone to greatness.” – Oprah Winfrey

17. “Remember that failure is an event, not a person.” – Zig Ziglar

18. “Failure after long perseverance is much grander than never to have a striving good enough to be called a failure.” – George Eliot

19. “Why do I talk about the benefits of failure? Simply because failure meant a stripping away of the inessential. I stopped pretending to myself that I was anything other than what I was and began to direct all my energy into finishing the only work that mattered to me.” – J.K. Rowling

20. “I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” – Michael Jordan
