Carrie Amelia Nation, a radical member of the temperance movement

When Carry Nation stepped foot into the Kiowa, Kansas bar, nobody saw what was coming. The woman, dressed in black, was on a mission from God. But as soon as she entered the saloon, all hell broke loose. She ran behind the bar, smashed the mirror and all the bottles under it; threw the cash register, threw it down; then broke the faucets of the refrigerator and cut the rubber tubes that conducted the beer. She was arrested soon after, but she didn’t mind. The bar had just gotten the Carry Nation treatment. During her years as an anti-alcohol advocate in the late 19th century, Nation built a reputation as a fearless, even unhinged reformer who would go to any length to save people from drunkenness.

Kaylee Muthart, 20, was heard screaming outside South Main Chapel and Mercy Centre in South Carolina on February 6.

When parishioners ran out they found her holding her eyeballs in her hands and desperately tried to restrain her.

She has now told how – in a drug-addled haze – she thought she had heard God calling on her to make the gruesome “sacrifice”.

“I thought everything would end abruptly, and everyone would die,” Muthart told Cosmopolitan, “if I didn’t tear out my eyes immediately.”

“So I pushed my thumb, pointer, and middle finger into each eye. “I gripped each eyeball, twisted, and pulled until each eye popped out of the socket — it felt like a massive struggle, the hardest thing I ever had to do.” It was at this point that worried worshippers emerged from the church after hearing her screaming: “I want to see the light!”

She said the pastor later told her that by the time he reached her she was holding both her eyes in her hands.

“I had squished them, although they were somehow still attached to my head,” Muthart said.

It took a team of police to calm her down before she was airlifted to Greenville Memorial Hospital’s trauma unit, where doctors cleaned what was left of her orbital sockets to prevent infection.

Doctors believe the drug she ingested was laced with another chemical, causing her to have hallucinations in which she heard voices telling her to “sacrifice her eyes” so she could make it into heaven.

Tests of Muthart’s blood afterward showed methamphetamine was in her system but have been inconclusive about other additives

Muthart was a good student in high school, she told the magazine. But a focus on work to save money for a car and issues with an irregular heartbeat led to poor school performance. She dropped out and soon turned to alcohol and other substances.

“But when I was 19 last summer,” she told Cosmopolitan, “I was smoking pot with an acquaintance at his house and got a strange high. Later, I googled the symptoms that surprised me the most – numb lips and feeling like I was on top of the world. I’d long been a religious Christian; the high made me feel particularly close to God.”

Muthart said she believed the marijuana was laced with meth or cocaine – which appears to have made her relate drug use with a religious experience. And soon after, she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. The extreme highs and lows of the condition left her susceptible to drug use, doctors told her.

“While on ecstasy, I studied the Bible. I misinterpreted a lot of it. I convinced myself that meth would bring me even closer to God,” she said.

In August, she picked at blackheads on her face until it bled. By Thanksgiving, Muthart moved from smoking meth to snorting and shooting it into her veins, she said.

Her mother, Katy Tompkins, was alarmed by her rapidly deteriorating condition soon before the incident.

“The day before it happened, which was my birthday, I was getting ready to have her committed, just to get her off the streets and away from it,” Tompkins told People. “But I was too late.&rdquo

In addition to her physical recovery from the self-inflicted wounds, Muthart also had to deal with rehab from drug addiction. After her release from the hospital, she also spent time at a psychiatric facility.

In addition to adjusting to life as a blind person, Muthart is saying she has come a long way in terms of using drugs.

“I can’t even imagine being around it again. I would just end up being really angry. I’m blind, I’m blind,” Muthart said. “I was scared. I was super scared to go to the rehab. But it was actually one of the best times of my life.”

Part of her recovery includes learning Braille. She also occupies herself by playing guitar and singing.

In spite of all the assistance she has received, her journey is going to be a long one. She said her faith is helping her cope with the difficult times and challenges.

“Anytime I get scared or lost, I go ‘nope. God wouldn’t want you to feel that,'” Muthart said.

Muthart said she’s hopeful she can help others while recovering and growing on her own.

How attractive a man is, is proportional to his True Confidence. The more True Confidence he has, the more attractive he will appear to women, on average. The less True Confidence he has, the less attractive he will appear to women, on average.

Women don’t judge a man’s status by the car he drives or how many VIP tables he pays for. They judge his status by his behavior, and the behavioral trait they pick up on is what I refer to as True Confidence.

True Confidence infiltrates all behaviors. The lack of True Confidence also infiltrates all behaviors. It defines and resonates in everything you say and do, the way you stand, the way you smile, the people you associate with, the car you drive, the wine you drink, the jacket you wear.

Confidence itself isn’t new in relationship advice or social dynamics. It’s kind of a catch-all term to signify everything that makes someone sure of themselves. Its meaning is murky and most people don’t really know how to describe it unless they see it.

Women, in particular, are notorious for doling out the banal advice, “Just be confident,” as if that actually meant something.

But here I will be clear in my definition of True Confidence: being less invested in other people’s perceptions of you than your perception of yourself. Let me say that again:

True Confidence is being less invested in other people’s perceptions of you than in your perception of yourself.

A lack of True Confidence causes people to chronically seek validation and approval from others since they don’t give it to themselves. The way to build True Confidence and to therefore become more attractive to women is to invest more in oneself.

Women are generally only attracted to men who are less invested in them than they are in themselves.

By investment I mean the degree to which you sacrifice/alter your own thoughts/feelings/motivations for someone else. By less I mean that as a man, you should not be willing to sacrifice your thoughts/feelings/motivations for someone else more than they sacrifice theirs for you.

That may sound cold, un-PC, and yes, it made me squirm a little bit when I first realized it. But it’s true.

Think about it, for the majority of human history, men had few material possessions for women to judge their status by. Therefore women watched men’s behavior. Ask yourself what kind of behavior would indicate to a woman that a man is high status and fit to raise her children? These are the men who would be sexually selected over the course of hundreds of thousands of years.

Would it be a man who defers to all of the other men around him, who begs the women to be with him, who can’t stand up for himself and whose emotions are dictated by those around him? Or would it be the man who controls his own destiny, is unfazed by the threats others may pose to him and who shrugs if he pursues a woman and she has no interest in him.

The second man indicates a man of status. If you’re at the top of the food chain, you have no reason to be inhibited or to defer to others (unless you want to). If you’re at the bottom of the food chain, your entire life will revolve around the deferring to others.

The high status man displays True Confidence. The low status man displays little of it.

In a 1997 study published by Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, the psychologist Dr. Arthur Aron guided pairs of strangers in tasks specifically designed to generate closeness. Part of the experiment involved answering a series of 36 questions and then staring into your designated partner’s eyes for four straight minutes. Dr. Aron’s methodology famously resulted in an official marriage. According to his findings, reciprocal self-disclosure plays a critical part in relationship building, perhaps more so than common interests, expectations, or pheromones.

Here are the 36 questions, divided into three sets which scientists believe “foster closeness”. The study authors advise “the best way for you to get close to your partner is for you to share with them and for them to share with you”. After finishing answering the questions, the participants are supposed to sit and look into one another’s eyes for four minutes.

Set 1

1. Given the choice of anyone in the world, whom would you want as a dinner guest?

2. Would you like to be famous? In what way?

3. Before making a telephone call, do you ever rehearse what you are going to say? Why?

4. What would constitute a “perfect” day for you?

5. When did you last sing to yourself? To someone else?

6. If you were able to live to the age of 90 and retain either the mind or body of a 30-year-old for the last 60 years of your life, which would you want?

7. Do you have a secret hunch about how you will die?

8. Name three things you and your partner appear to have in common.

9. For what in your life do you feel most grateful?

10. If you could change anything about the way you were raised, what would it be?

11. Take four minutes and tell your partner your life story in as much detail as possible.

12. If you could wake up tomorrow having gained any one quality or ability, what would it be?

     

Set 2

1. If a crystal ball could tell you the truth about yourself, your life, the future or anything else, what would you want to know?

2. Is there something that you’ve dreamed of doing for a long time? Why haven’t you done it?

3. What is the greatest accomplishment of your life?

4. What do you value most in a friendship?

5. What is your most treasured memory?

6. What is your most terrible memory?

7. If you knew that in one year you would die suddenly, would you change anything about the way you are now living? Why?

8. What does friendship mean to you?

9. What roles do love and affection play in your life?

10. Alternate sharing something you consider a positive characteristic of your partner. Share a total of five items.

11. How close and warm is your family? Do you feel your childhood was happier than most other people’s?

12. How do you feel about your relationship with your mother?

Set 3

1. Make three true “we” statements each. For instance, “We are both in this room feeling … “

2. Complete this sentence: “I wish I had someone with whom I could share … “

3. If you were going to become a close friend with your partner, please share what would be important for him or her to know.

4. Tell your partner what you like about them; be very honest this time, saying things that you might not say to someone you’ve just met.

5. Share with your partner an embarrassing moment in your life.

6. When did you last cry in front of another person? By yourself?

7. Tell your partner something that you like about them already.

8. What, if anything, is too serious to be joked about?

9. If you were to die this evening with no opportunity to communicate with anyone, what would you most regret not having told someone? Why haven’t you told them yet?

10. Your house, containing everything you own, catches fire. After saving your loved ones and pets, you have time to safely make a final dash to save any one item. What would it be? Why?

11. Of all the people in your family, whose death would you find most disturbing? Why?

12. Share a personal problem and ask your partner’s advice on how he or she might handle it. Also, ask your partner to reflect back to you how you seem to be feeling about the problem you have chosen.

Respect is an overlooked and misunderstood idea in the pursuit of being an attractive man. Growing up, parents and teachers repeatedly told us to respect others. Because of this, a lot of us became obsessed with pleasing everyone else while forgetting ourselves. Our self-respect was pushed to second place.

So we try our hardest to respect women, but that alone doesn’t give us the dating life we want. That frustration leads us to believe we need to be douchebags to become Casanovas. It’s a myth perpetuated by insecure men.

Instead, know this: women sense your lack of self-respect. They can tell when you don’t fully trust, love, and believe in who you are in all aspects of your life. They can feel that your interest is from desperation rather than a genuine desire to know them.

A quality woman is attracted to a man who respects himself first and foremost.

Respect your boundaries. No one can take advantage of you unless you allow it. Too many guys let others walk all over them because they think they’ll be more likeable. However, people will value you less when they realize you’re spineless and easily manipulated. Understand your limits and learn to politely (yet firmly) say “no”.

Respect your body. It’s the only one you have. Don’t get shitfaced every night. Stay in decent shape. You don’t have to be an Olympic athlete, but make exercise a lifestyle priority. Don’t keep bullshitting that you have no time, you can make time.

Respect your environment. A man who can’t take care of his home can’t take care of himself. Women are instantly turned off if they walk into a man’s place that still looks and smells like a dorm room. Clean your shit up, wash your dishes, pick up your clothes off the floor (just got over that myself), and don’t let food spoil. Once you get into the routine of maintaining order, it gets much easier.

Respect your interests. Stop hiding your hobbies or putting up a facade. Openly share your passions. There are plenty of people who will be interested in the real you — go find them.

Respect your word. It’s the most powerful tool you own. Stay honest and communicate how you really feel at all times. You owe it to yourself to speak up — have an opinion, damn it! Don’t use your word to tear others down and most importantly, yourself.

Respect your fears. Do not aim to be fearless. If you try to escape or run from your fears, they will gain power over you. Instead, have the courage to be afraid. Embrace fear’s existence, face it head on, and then still push forward. Fear is not the enemy — being paralyzed by it is. The more you conquer, the stronger and more naturally those old fears will strip away.

The ringleader of an international child pornography ring—who was sentenced to 40 years in prison just last month—died after a fight with seven inmates on January 2 at a Michigan federal detention center.

A statement Friday from the Federal Bureau of Prisons says Christian Maire had life-threatening injuries following the “altercation” Tuesday at the Milan detention center about 50 miles southwest of Detroit and was pronounced dead.

Maire, who was married with two children—received a 40 year sentence on December 7, but he had been detained at Milan since May 29, Michigan Live reported.

Prosecutors described how Maire was at the head of a group of seven American and Canadian men who lured more than a hundred vulnerable underage girls—some as young as 10 years old—into private online video chat rooms between 2012 and 2017.

Once they had the girls in front of a webcam, the men would manipulate them into stripping and performing  sex acts on camera. In some instances, they even convinced the girls into cutting themselves with sharp objects, according to court documents. Videos of the chats were recorded and shared among the members.

The men—who were known as the “Bored Group” by investigators because their online aliases often contained the word “bored”— The men pretended to be teenage boys using fake profiles and stolen pictures then scoured popular social media sites looking for targets. Their hunting grounds included Gifyo, Periscope, YouNow, and MyLOL.com, which describes itself as “the No. 1 teen dating site in the U.S., Australia, U.K. and Canada.”

The other men convicted in the ring: 

• Arthur Simpatico, 47, of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. He was sentenced to 38 years.
• Jonathan Negroni Rodriguez, 37, of West Hollywood, California, was sentenced to 35 years.
• Michal Figura, 36, of Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, was sentenced to 31¼ years.
• Odell Ortega, 37, of Miami, was sentenced to 37½ years.
• Brett Jonathan Sinta, 36, of Hickory, North Carolina, was sentenced to 30½ years.
• Caleb Young, 38, of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, was sentenced to 30 years.
• Daniel Walton, 34 Saginaw, Texas, was sentenced to 30½ years.

Chris Watts was sentenced to life in prison in November after he pleaded guilty to killing his pregnant wife and two daughters.

Now, the 33-year-old convicted murderer from Colorado is receiving love letters and fan mail as he begins his new life behind bars

Prosecutors are releasing dozens of letters sent to the murderer.

“In my heart, you are a great guy,” wrote a woman named Candace.

“I’m hoping to brighten your days,” wrote another woman. Someone even sent a picture of herself in a bikini.

Candace, a 39-year-old mother of two, wrote multiple times; her second letter ended with #TEAMCHRIS #LOVEHIM and a doodled heart. “I’ve been watching your interview and I just became attracted to you (don’t ask me why),” she said in one missive, adding that if he wrote back she would “be the happiest girl alive.”

One woman told Watts she didn’t care that he killed his family and to put her on his list of visitors, adding: “Trust me, you will not be sorry.”

Tammy, 36, described herself as “a simple girl living in a small town” and included photos. She noted that it was her first time writing to an inmate and that she was “actually very nervous.”

The Ohio-based woman asked Watts, “Why is someone as pretty as me single? And writing to someone in jail?” (She recently came out of a bad breakup, she explained.)

One letter, from a 39-year-old woman, said, “I want to get to know you soooo bad its not even funny.”

“Literally your on my mind almost every single day since you were in the news,”

Watts admitted to killing his wife, Shanann, and their daughters, 4-year-old Bella and 3-year-old Celeste and loading the bodies into his truck and dumping them at an oil work site, after first telling police they were missing.

In a deal with prosecutors, Watts pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in exchange for avoiding the death penalty.

He’s serving three life sentences.

One person asked Cruz how he was “holding up” and then asked to be “writing buddies” before ending the letter with a smile. Another letter included photos from a woman in a bra and underwear as she sucked on a popsicle, according to CNN.

Alice Wong, who served on President Barack Obama’s National Council on Disabilities, is the founder of the ​Disability Visibility Project. In a Dec. 19 episode of “Flash Forward,” a podcast that considers the social repercussions of hypothetical future developments, Wong ​discussed the possibility of human-embryo gene editing reaching a point at which certain disabilities can be treated at (or before) birth and thus eradicated.

“We’re talking about removal of diseases,” she said. “That’s forever. That’s a change — a modification — that will be passed on to future generations. So that’s actually genocide. It’s a form of eugenics where certain lived experiences are seen as undesirable and unimaginable.”

Wong, who has spinal muscular atrophy, relies on machine ventilation. “My life is better” thanks to medical advancements, she said. But when it comes to CRISPR — the gene-editing tool that has recently been used for the first time on human babies to prevent HIV transmission — Wong is worried that the ethical implications have not been fully considered.

“A lot of this conversation [around CRIPSR] is about the removal of suffering and pain and disease,” she said. “Whenever I hear stuff like that — they’re talking about me, people of my community.”

Her concern is with doctors having the authority to decide what’s a life worth living by curing conditions which they consider to be “disabilities.” That, according to Wong, would constitute “ableism,” pure and simple.

“For people who want to do this to their own body — more power to you … But I do think that a pre-emptive alteration of genes [is] based on fear. [Pre-emptive genetic alterations are] based on the imagination of non-disabled people of what living with a disability feels like,” she said.

Rebecca Cokley, who — like Wong — served on Barack Obama’s National Council on Disabilities, offered a similar perspective in a Washington Post op-ed ​last year. She argued that disabled people are a community unto themselves and that eliminating their conditions means erasing the potential future of their culture. She asked, “Where is the line between what society perceives to be a horrible genetic mutation and someone’s culture?”
