I just want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas! Hopefully everyone has the chance to be with their friends, families and loved ones this season. And while every household else is watching fucking Miracle on 34th Street, I like to continue the tradition of presenting Commando. A movie which undoubtedly puts me in the Christmas spirit. Enjoy!

The Daily Man-Up: How A Man Gains Confidence

$

(photo: @ryz0n)

I was on the phone the other day with a guy I actually look up to. He’s a good two decades older than I am, and he’s built a great business, he’s raised a wonderful family, and he has a great outlook on life.

We were talking about manhood and things along those lines, then confidence.

We both thought about how we actually get confidence…

It’s not from building some great-looking body – on some level that’s a tad feminine. The male body is something use to do something, it’s utility, not something to show off like a lady on a runway.

It’s not even necessarily from earning a lot of money, though that plays a bigger role than the physique, not necessarily because of the money itself, however, but because of the path to get it.

The path, the obstacles overcome, the battles won, the difficulties we conquer, that’s how we both found true, deep confidence.

The Greater the Difficulty, the Greater the Confidence Won

Climbing a mountain gives you confidence. Lifting a big, heavy weight gives you confidence. Beating up an opponent in the ring, and especially an opponent you thought was better than you, gives you real confidence.

It’s the dark moments in life, where our backs are against the wall, where we’re that close to giving up, that are the greatest opportunities to acquire confidence.

When we defeat our demons, slay our dragons, do what we really didn’t think we could do, we become something different, better than we were.

We were the guy with self-doubt. We were the guy who slouched a bit when he walked. We were the guy who compared himself to others, who wished he was someone else or something else.

After that very difficult victory, however, no obstacle seems too big, no pit too deep, no event too drastic.

We become invincible, but humble at the same time.

Our Greatest Trials Produce Our Greatest Self

‘Our greatest self’ sounds cheesy.

Google ‘self help’ and you’ll find a lot of nonsense about ‘creating your greatest self’ through positive thinking and humming and hawing and yada yada yada.

We know it’s a lie.

You don’t magically become your greatest self, you have to earn it.

It’s earned by struggling well. It’s earned by conquering an obstacle, defeating a foe.

It’s the man who’s been through the most, faced the greatest obstacles and both survived and won, that will have the most confidence.

The Greatest Demonstration Of The Christmas Spirit: The Christmas Truce Of 1914

During World War I, in the winter of 1914, on the battlefields of Flanders, one of the most unusual events in all of human history took place. The Germans had been in a fierce battle with the British and French. Both sides were dug in, safe in muddy, man-made trenches six to eight feet deep that seemed to stretch forever.

All of a sudden, German troops began to put small Christmas trees, lit with candles, outside of their trenches. Then, they began to sing songs. Across the way, in the “no man’s land” between them, came songs from the British and French troops. Incredibly, many of the Germans, who had worked in England before the war, were able to speak good enough English to propose a “Christmas” truce.

The British and French troops, all along the miles of trenches, accepted. In a few places, allied troops fired at the Germans as they climbed out of their trenches. But the Germans were persistent and Christmas would be celebrated even under the threat of impending death.

According to Stanley Weintraub, who wrote about this event in his book, Silent Night, “signboards arose up and down the trenches in a variety of shapes. They were usually in English, or – from the Germans – in fractured English. Rightly, the Germans assumed that the other side could not read traditional gothic lettering, and that few English understood spoken German. ‘YOU NO FIGHT, WE NO FIGHT’ was the most frequently employed German message. Some British units improvised ‘MERRY CHRISTMAS’ banners and waited for a response. More placards on both sides popped up.”

A spontaneous truce resulted. Soldiers left their trenches, meeting in the middle to shake hands. The first order of business was to bury the dead who had been previously unreachable because of the conflict. Then, they exchanged gifts. Chocolate cake, cognac, postcards, newspapers, tobacco. In a few places, along the trenches, soldiers exchanged rifles for soccer balls and began to play games.

It didn’t last forever. In fact, some of the generals didn’t like it at all and commanded their troops to resume shooting at each other. After all, they were in a war. Soldiers eventually did resume shooting at each other. But only after, in a number of cases, a few days of wasting rounds of ammunition shooting at stars in the sky instead of soldiers in the opposing army across the field.

For a few precious moments there was peace on earth good will toward men.

College Student Told To Remove Anti-Nazi Sign Because It Wasn’t ‘Inclusive’

nazi inclusive umass

The University of Massachusetts-Amherst asked a student to take down a sign that said “Fuck Nazis. You are not welcome here” because it wasn’t inclusive.

Nicole Parsons recently put up the sign on her window, which read “F*ck Nazis you are not welcome here,” after getting tired of her university’s silence towards hate crimes on campus, as per BuzzFeed News on Dec. 23.

Parsons said in the report that she was compelled to put up the sign after a “Happy Hanukkah” sign on a resident assistant’s door was vandalized with a swastika early this December.

“I thought maybe if I hang the sign up, the person who drew the swastika will see it and see someone condemning their actions, even if the administration doesn’t do it,” Parsons was quoted as saying.

She, however, was surprised when she received an email from residence director Eddie Papazoni telling her to take down her sign.

“Though this sign is permitted under Freedom of Speech, I would also like to discuss the impact on the community that this sign has had,” wrote Eddie Papazoni to Parsons. “There are some in the community that have expressed that the sign should be taken down as it has created mixed emotions in the community on how to proceed, issues of inclusion, and the ability to be active members of their community.”

Papazoni admitted that Parsons could not be forced to take the sign down, but he asked that she do it anyway “so that all students can be a part of an inclusive residential experience, as well as having a respectful environment to be a part of here on our campus.”

“I was in absolute shock,” Parsons told BuzzFeed. “This email tells me the university cares more about the feelings of Nazis than the safety of their students. I thought maybe if I hang the sign up maybe the person who drew the swastika will see it and see someone condemning their actions even if the administration doesn’t do it.”

The university, meanwhile, has taken to their official Facebook account on Dec. 21 to address the issue. As per their post, the residence director’s “poorly worded email” that “should not have been sent” does not reflect the university’s values.

The Daily Man-Up: Why Fear Should Be Your Compass in Life, Not a Deterrent

$
0
0

(photo: @lanesmith)

Our deepest, darkest, most numbing fears aren’t spiders, rats, or snakes.

While they may frighten us, our fear of spiders and such, probably won’t lead us to live a small, insignificant life. Fear of failure will.

We fear insignificance, and never truly experiencing the vast adventures that life can potentially offer us if we have the courage that they require of us. We fear that we’re headed on a road that will leave us alone in our beds, with regret as our only companion as we face whatever comes next.

Although fear can make us live small lives spent worrying about trivial things as great adventures pass us by, it can also be the solution to the problem, and the riddle that life throws at us daily: Why are we here?

Fear can keep us living the small, insignificant lives that are in direct opposition to the lives we lead in our dreams, when our souls are free to feel, think, and explore a world without limitation.

“Each time we face our fear, we gain strength, courage, and confidence in the doing.”

The greatest obstacles in life are always internal

They’re our fears, laziness, a belief that we’re not worthy of our dreams and ambitions. The obstacles, being internal, are then solved in the same space.

When you face your fears, you break down your obstacles and create a newer, better version of yourself that does have the belief and confidence needed to accomplish the loftier of our dreams.

The majority, however, never embark on the difficult journey that every great man or woman has taken, ultimately because of the internal forces like fear and laziness. They feel it’s easier to remain, and more difficult to gain and grow. But the dangers in remaining just where we are in life, for the rest of our lives, is far greater than any battle we can involve ourselves in, even if that battle is with our own fear.

To not face fear and move towards the life we truly want in our souls, is to ignore our spirit’s compass that tells us what we want out of this existence that may be brief, but it should also be glorious.

Move Towards Your Fears. Don’t Run From Them.

Fear is often coupled with adventure, as it should be. A life lived in the pursuit of adventure is a life that truly embodies the essence of living. There’s a reason why the excitement and the thrill of an adventure is so intoxicating. It goes far beyond the release of endorphins that give us a natural high. Adventure is an experience that makes us feel alive. In this case fear is something we should move towards, not run from.

But fear should also be mentioned with our most audacious dreams. It’s fear that stops us from living a fulfilled life, but it’s also fear that shows us what really matters in life.

The Daily Man-Up: Pain Is Your Friend And Ally

$
0
0

(photo: @svkj)

The most necessary thing in life, is pain. Without pain we cannot develop toughness or grit. Without pain we cannot improve, learn, and grow. Pain is our greatest ally in our quest to become something more than what we currently are. So seek it out. Go beyond what you can currently do and who you currently are. Ask more of your body and your mind and evolve into the man you are capable of becoming.

Pain is not something to run from, but attract. In attracting more you allow yourself to become more.

Strength is only acquired through pain.

No matter the kind of strength you’re talking about, be it physical, mental, or of the spirit, the only way to obtain it and develop it is through pain.

Pain is the doorway we must walk through daily to become the men we can become. It’s in pain that we break down the muscle, it’s in pain that we break the spirit.

After going beyond where we could previously go, we acquire a new capacity to resist whatever the world throws at us, be it a heavier weight or a more arduous test.

If you set out to be more than a man, but a force, you can never back down.

If what you want to be is more than the average fella, you have to resolve to never back down. That is, even though pain and loss and failure may be in your future, you must meet it all on your feet, trudging forward, never willingly backing down or taking a knee.

The man who is a force to be reckoned with gets there because of will, because of a choice, not because of innate talent or God-given ability.

Make that choice. It isn’t the easy choice to be made, but it will lead to a life of purpose and meaning.
