The Daily Man-Up: 8 Habits that Separate the Grounded Men from the Boys

The most basic distinction between boys and grounded men is that boys act on feelings, men act on vision.

Boys are like a feather in the wind. They allow their emotional state to govern their actions and they decide whether or not to keep their commitments in the heat of the moment.

If they don’t feel like doing something then they don’t.

Boys will hit snooze on their alarm instead of waking up early and doing what needs to be done. They will show up late to meetings. They will procrastinate on their work. They will defer what they should do for what they want to do in the moment.

Men are different.

Men create a crystal clear vision for their future and then base every action on that vision.

It doesn’t matter if a man wants to eat another piece of cake, smoke that cigarette, or sleep in an extra 50 minutes. He knows the vision that he has for his life and he isn’t willing to compromise his future success for pleasure in the present moment.

A strong grounded man is willing to do something that he dislikes, even something that he hates if it will propel him forward towards his vision. Boys will not.

Does this mean that grounded men never compromise? That they never screw up, sleep through an alarm, miss a workout, or cheat on their diet? Of course not!

They are human just like you and me.

But “real” men know that their actions must be congruent with their vision most of the time if they want to survive and thrive in this world.

Woman Apologizes for Falsely Accusing 9-Year-Old Boy of Sexually Assaulting Her

A woman who called the police on a 9-year-old black boy, claiming he inappropriately touched her, apologized to the child on Friday.

The incident took place in Brooklyn on Wednesday, when the woman, 53-year-old Teresa Klein called the police after she thought the child grabbed her behind.

She quickly earned the nickname “Cornerstore Caroline” by 37-year-old Jason Littlejohn, a Flatbush native who took footage of the incident outside the bodega, a video that has since gone viral on Facebook.

“I was just sexually assaulted by a child,” Klein said in the video while on the phone with the police. The boy and a second child both started crying as other eyewitnesses began to challenge Klein about what actually happened. “The son grabbed my ass and she decided to yell at me,” Klein then said, referencing the child’s mother.

Klein went back to the store on Friday to purchase cigarettes and speak with reporters. Urged by a reporter, Klein viewed the bodega’s security camera footage from Wednesday, which showed that when the child turned around to talk to someone, his backpack brushed Klein’s backside when she was bending over the counter.

Klein attempted to explain her actions, saying that she was upset with how the boy’s mother addressed her. “I understand how it looks, but she escalated it and then I lost my temper at her, not at that child,” she said.

Afterward, she spoke with a reporter and apologized, saying, “Young man,” she said, “I don’t know your name but I’m sorry.”

Woman Fired After Blocking Man From Entering His Own Apartment

Hilary Brooke Thornton is the latest person to expose their ugly side to the public and it has cost her her job. Thornton was fired from her job as manager of a luxury apartment building in St. Louis after a video surfaced that shows her preventing a black man, D’Arreion Toles, from entering the building which he lives in. Once Toles made his way into the building, Thornton continued to follow him.

“You are blocking me into my building. This is my building as well. So, I need you to get out my way,” Toles says in the video which was published on his Facebook page.

Despite the unfortunate situation, Toles said that he has no hard feelings towards Thornton, who was the senior property manager at Tribeca-STL/STLCityWide. He discussed the incident with local news outlet KMOV.

“I am not mad at her. I am not upset with her. I am not going to go after her legally or anything like that. I wish her the best. I would still have a conversation with her.”

Tribeca-STL issued a statement on its decision to fire Thornton.

“Tribeca-STL was recently shared a video containing a disturbing interaction that we believe is important to clarify. The video did involve one our employees, but the event did NOT take place at Tribeca-STL and did NOT involve one of our tenants. The video is showing the employee in her private life at her own residence interacting with another person,” the statement reads.

“The Tribeca-STL family is a minority-owned company that consists of employees and residents from many racial backgrounds. We are proud of this fact and do not and never will stand for racism or racial profiling at our company. After a review of the matter, the employee has been terminated and is no longer with our company. At Tribeca-STL we want all residents, guests and visitors to feel welcome, safe and respected.”

KMOV attempted to contact Thornton, but she did not respond to any request for comment.

Man Who Lost Nose And Eye To Cancer Asked To Cover His Face Or Leave South Carolina Store

A South Carolina man who lost one of his eyes and his nose to cancer was told to cover his face or leave a convenience store.

WCIV reports 65-year-old Kirby Evans stopped at the Forks Pit Stop in Waterloo Tuesday, got donuts and a drink and sat down to eat. He said the manager approached him and “jerked” him into her office.

“The words that came out of her mouth hurt me so deep,” Evans told the Charleston-area ABC station.

He said the manager told him he was scaring away customers and asked him to cover his face or leave.

“How can a person eat anything with his face covered?” he asked.

Evans said he is used to people staring at him. He had surgery seven years ago to remove a type of skin cancer from his face. His left eye and entire nose was removed, leaving his face disfigured.

He said he cannot afford reconstructive surgery and can’t wear an eye patch because the skin around it is sensitive.

Evans said left the store crying. That evening, his daughter posted on Facebook about the incident.

Not long after, a woman who identified herself as the manager responded to the post, admitted to it and defended her decision.

“I run a food service business where people dine in. I do not see absolutely anything wrong with what I did. He would come in at lunch time and sit at the food booths right at my busy time everyday. I have bills to pay to and I work very hard to please my customers.”

Evans said he will never go to the store again and had yet to receive an apology. His daughter created a GoFundMe account to spread awareness.

The Daily Man-Up: Victim To Victor

When Nick Santonastasso was born, he was given a 30% chance of surviving birth. One of only 12 people in the world born with Hanhart Syndrome – an extremely rare genetic disorder that caused Nick to be born with no legs, only one arm, and one finger. Growing up was hard, and Nick found himself self-loathing and thinking about ending his life.

However, more than just surviving, Nick found his WHY when he became a high school wrestler and professional bodybuilder. Now, he is sharing his experience with people all over the world as a keynote speaker at schools, non-profits, as well as Fortune 500 companies.

This condition hasn’t kept Santonastasso from living life to the fullest. He says he owes his success to this simple motto that helped him overcome failure and doubt: “It’s not can’t, it’s how.”

“Most people start with ‘can’t.’ Instead, look at the situation, take a deep breath and say, ‘Okay, how am I going to conquer this? How am I going to break through this barrier?”

“My parents sat me down and said ‘Nick, the world’s not going to stop for you because you’re born like this. Mom and dad are not going to be here forever, you’re going to have to figure out how to do each and everything your way,'” he recalls.

Accepting life’s challenges helped Santonastasso build resilience.

“I’m capable of what everyone else is,”

"I just want people to look at the world differently,” Santonastasso says. “I could sit here in this chair and moan and complain about being born with no legs and one arm. Or I could go do something about it. I could go make something of it."

1. All I’ve ever wanted was just to feel what it’s like to be in love, just once.

Just once. That’s it.

All I’ve ever wanted, from the age of 16, was to fall in love with a girl who would reciprocate my feelings. I’ve wanted to feel what it would be like to rest my head on her lap while she talks about her day, to give her a loving embrace after not seeing her for a couple of days, to get butterflies in your stomach when you see her coming from a distance. To watch and laugh at shitty movies in bed one weekend, to enjoy activities that you wouldn’t normally do yourself with, to listen to a love song and see her face.

Just once I want to hear a girl I’m romantically involved with say she loves me and mean it. To help me shoulder my burdens while I shoulder hers, to be each others crutch when times are rough.

I’m 26 years old and I still haven’t experienced it. I know there are many factors as to why, but I can’t help but feel bitter that this is a normal everyday thing for most people. People get in to relationships and fall in love everyday yet here we are not having experienced even a drop of it. It makes me sad, it really does.

I even thought I accepted it, but I’m a man in his prime, its in my dna to long for companionship. I don’t know what I’m aiming at with this post, but I saw a lot of posts talking about relationships so casually and how they’ve grown from it etc, something so major and normal in people’s lives yet its an enigma to us. That is so fucking disheartening. I hope one day I meet someone, but it looks incredibly bleak.

2. I am tired of myself. I have absolutely no confidence whatsoever. I do not believe girls can be attracted to me. I feel like a definition of a loser. I got a job and try to attend many public events. There are always many girls but I feel very uncomfortable and anxious, always. I have no courage to even say hi to any of them. Well, actually I did attempt that a few times – only to awkwardly blurt out some nonsense and make them go away. I know rejection means nothing. But it’s not about rejection, it’s about me feeling like a creep. I am short, super skinny, I am probably average or below average looking too. I feel like I’m losing hope to make connections. Being social is such a struggle for me. It’s been years and no improvement (and I attend all those events, go out for walks, I go sit in cafes; overall to be around people, mind you). I feel like a mouse around tigers. And the fact that most men and even women are towering over me doesn’t help.

3. I remember when I was younger, I’d look at cute girls I see during my day and I’d get turned on or whatever, I always thought sexually.

Now, I see cute girls, and I can’t even think sexually because I start thinking about how much I hate myself and how there’s no much I’m never going to experience, and how I’m totally unlovable.

4. Every Thanksgiving and Christmas when the whole family gets together, all of my cousins always show up with their partner, and their children if they have some. Everybody is in a relationship, everybody has somebody, but me. I’m all alone with nobody to love.

Out of all of my family (with the exception of anybody under 13) i’m the only one who has never been in a relationship and is still a virgin. Even my 14 year old cousin has a girlfriend, and yet here I am nearly a decade older and iv’e never even kissed a girl.

Nobody in my family has ever been a 23 year old kissless virgin, all of my cousins were in relationship in their teens and likely lost their virginity before 21. I watched as they all found the love of their life and got married, the majority of them marrying before the age of 25. I watched as my female cousins got into relationship after relationship, boyfriend after boyfriend, with ease… While I struggled to even get a reply back from the woman I liked.

I watched as my cousin broke up with her boyfriend and found someone new within 5 months. While I struggle to even find someone after 23 years.

None of them can possibly comprehend my struggles… Love has betrayed me and kicked me to the curb.

5. No girl will ever bring me to her parents home for Thanksgiving dinner. Or wait for me in her quaint Halloween costume because I’m taking her to a house party. Or surpirse me with a birthday party with all my non existent friends who she invited. Or open presents with me on Christmas morning surrounded by loving family. Why should i even stick around. This is ridiculous.

6. My life is over in terms of a first kiss, dating, relationship, sex, marriage, kids….you know all the things that matter in life. I’ll be 30 soon and nothing will change now. I wasn’t able to succeed when I had my chances and I had plenty of opportunities in the past.

I keep myself occupy with drinking, video games, and sports. All superficial things that everyone else has in addition to everything I mention above. It pains me to know that I completely fail at life. Once my bank account is drain, I think that is the end because I cannot handle any jobs anymore. I worked so hard in my life but all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

7. All through my childhood and adolescence I have been repeatedly praised by grown ups for being a “good boy”.

I can’t remember a single time I had caused significant trouble for my parents, or teachers, compared to my age peers at least. I kept hearing teachers tell me they “would gladly teach 20 classes full of kids like me. For free.” because I was so easy to work with. My parents had always gotten compliments about how calm and “older than his age” I was. I had never catcalled (until that one accidental time) had never come back home later than appropriate. And look where that’s gotten me. Nowhere. Now I look at my age peers that were so much trouble for their parents at the time. Almost all of them are leading happy lives with happy relationships.

The young men that used to cat call are now actually much more confident around women. The boys that caused trouble for teachers now have no trouble standing up for themselves when they need to. The ones that used to stay out late now have so much more experience interacting with people and have no social anxiety. And of course, almost all of them have grown out of these “inappropriate behaviors” and have become responsible adults. Responsible adults that have infact come further in life that I have, despite every grown up’s prediction from back when we were boys, that I was the one going to be successful.

8. I’m a student and I regularly study until late in the evening in the library. Today was no different, but I left a bit earlier to enjoy the nice weather at least a little bit. On my walk home, I always encounter many restaurants, cafes and old historic buildings with a lot of cosiness, which makes me feel a bit lonely from time to time, but manageable.

But then it struck me. As I was walking over the market square, I started to see every bench filled with one couple each, from the first to the last one. It felt like walking into some kind of movie scene or something. They were all laughing, enjoying and seemingly wonderful in love (writing this I notice that my description doesn’t even come close to describing the atmosphere and vivid faces that were there).

At the moment I was passing, I really thought to myself: If I had to choose between having just one evening, or even a little hour, to experience what these people are experiencing, and continuing my life, I would accept the former in a blink of an eye. To my mind, that there, was life in its most naked form, and to have lived through such a moment gave you permission to tell that you knew what it meant to have lived. Something the universe could never take away from them anymore.

9. Going to the mall and seeing teenage boys with girls around their arm is so depressing. They’re light years ahead of me and im already 28. Still a kissless dateless verge, this beyond pathetic. How can I even sit here and eat when it’s like we’re not even the same species? Everyone is socializing smiling and just overall having fun and yet here I sit all alone just typing away on forever alone. I was tempted to strike up a convo with a girl sitting by herself but thankfully I snapped out of it. I only would have embarrassed myself in front of all these happy people.

10. So the time has finally come. The time for which I’ve decided that I’ll never get a girlfriend. It happen out of the blue. I just thought to myself “Wow, I’m going to be single forever, and you know what? I’m okay with that.” At first, I was a little concerned with my new attitude. It didn’t feel like me, but at the same time, it was. I finally realized that getting a girlfriend really doesn’t matter. In the end, we’re all going to die and turn into nothingness. I guess being a nihilist kind of helped me with this realization too. After I realized this, I started looking at MGTOW (Men Going Their Own Way), and boy was that interesting.

MGTOW isn’t like being an incel. They don’t hate women, they just don’t want anything to do with them, and that spoke to me. Getting a girlfriend was the goal that I’d always set for myself, but at last, a goal that would never be accomplished. But that’s okay. I’m tired of chasing after women. I’m tired of believing that getting a girlfriend will make me happy. Because in the end, it won’t. I think abandoning women is the best choice i can make for myself.

I may be a nihilist, but sometimes, I gravitate toward Buddhism. The whole getting rid of desire to reach Nirvana, that sounds pleasing to me. Girls are kind of my desire, so maybe by not being interested in them, I’ll be closer to enlightenment. Maybe I’ll meditate and pursue that later in life. So basically all I’m saying is that I don’t need women to validate myself, and hopefully maybe some of you will follow in my footsteps. If not, that’s okay. I’m not trying to push my opinion on any of you. I just want all you to be happy. So good luck to you all and I hope you all find happiness.

An Honest Obituary For A Woman Who Suffered From Opioid Addiction

$

Our beloved Madelyn Ellen Linsenmeir died on Sunday, October 7. While her death was unexpected, Madelyn suffered from drug addiction, and for years we feared her addiction would claim her life. We are grateful that when she died, she was safe and she was with her family.

Maddie was born on March 31, 1988, in Burlington, Vt., where she grew up and lived on and off throughout her adult life; she also spent time in Sarasota, Fla.; Keene, N.H.; and Boulder, Colo.

Madelyn was a born performer and had a singing voice so beautiful it would stop people on the street. Whether she was onstage in a musical or around the kitchen table with her family, when she shared her voice, she shared her light. She was a member of FolKids of Vermont, a dance and musical troupe that toured the world. Maddie visited Russia and Thailand with the group and, as part of their exchange program, hosted kids from other countries at home in Vermont. She loved to ski and snowboard, and she swam on the YMCA swim team, winning medals at the New England regionals.

When she was 16, she moved with her parents from Vermont to Florida to attend a performing arts high school. Soon after she tried OxyContin for the first time at a high school party, and so began a relationship with opiates that would dominate the rest of her life.

It is impossible to capture a person in an obituary, and especially someone whose adult life was largely defined by drug addiction. To some, Maddie was just a junkie — when they saw her addiction, they stopped seeing her. And what a loss for them. Because Maddie was hilarious, and warm, and fearless, and resilient. She could and would talk to anyone, and when you were in her company you wanted to stay. In a system that seems to have hardened itself against addicts and is failing them every day, she befriended and delighted cops, social workers, public defenders and doctors, who advocated for and believed in her ’til the end. She was adored as a daughter, sister, niece, cousin, friend and mother, and being loved by Madelyn was a constantly astonishing gift.

Maddie loved her family and the world. But more than anyone else, she loved her son, Ayden, who was born in 2014. She transformed her life to mother him. Every afternoon in all kinds of weather, she would put him in a backpack and take him for a walk. She sang rather than spoke to him, filling his life with song. Like his mom, Ayden loves to swim; together they would spend hours in the lake or pool. And she so loved to snuggle him up, surrounding him with her love.

After having Ayden, Maddie tried harder and more relentlessly to stay sober than we have ever seen anyone try at anything. But she relapsed and ultimately lost custody of her son, a loss that was unbearable.

During the past two years especially, her disease brought her to places of incredible darkness, and this darkness compounded on itself, as each unspeakable thing that happened to her and each horrible thing she did in the name of her disease exponentially increased her pain and shame. For 12 days this summer, she was home, and for most of that time she was sober. For those 12 wonderful days, full of swimming and Disney movies and family dinners, we believed as we always did that she would overcome her disease and make the life for herself we knew she deserved. We believed this until the moment she took her last breath. But her addiction stalked her and stole her once again. Though we would have paid any ransom to have her back, any price in the world, this disease would not let her go until she was gone.

Maddie is survived by her son, Ayden; her parents, Maureen Linsenmeir and Mark Linsenmeir; her sister Kate O’Neill and Kate’s partner, Marshall Fong; her sister Maura O’Neill and Maura’s partner, Tim Painting; her aunts Beth Dow and Susan Dow and Beth’s partner, Charlie Allison; her beloved cousin Sloan Collins; and many other aunts, uncles and cousins, including the Conants, Cahills and Camisas. She is predeceased by her grandparents, Madelyn and Roland Keenan, Mary Ellen and Herman Dow, and Reginald Linsenmeir.

Please join us for a memorial service honoring Maddie’s life on Sunday, October 21, at 2 p.m., at the First Unitarian Universalist Society sanctuary at 152 Pearl Street in Burlington. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Turning Point Center, a place where Maddie spent time and felt supported. Donations can be made via its website, turningpointcentervt.org.

If you yourself are struggling from addiction, know that every breath is a fresh start. Know that hundreds of thousands of families who have lost someone to this disease are praying and rooting for you. Know that we believe with all our hearts that you can and will make it. It is never too late.

If you are reading this with judgment, educate yourself about this disease, because that is what it is. It is not a choice or a weakness. And chances are very good that someone you know is struggling with it, and that person needs and deserves your empathy and support.

If you work in one of the many institutions through which addicts often pass — rehabs, hospitals, jails, courts — and treat them with the compassion and respect they deserve, thank you. If instead you see a junkie or thief or liar in front of you rather than a human being in need of help, consider a new profession.

We take comfort in knowing that Maddie is surrounded by light, free from the struggle that haunted her. We would have given anything for her to experience that freedom in this lifetime. Our grief over losing her is infinite. And now so is she.
