The Daily Man-Up: Top 5 Lessons From A 10 Year Journey To Becoming Disciplined

No one becomes disciplined overnight. It’s a lifetime journey.
I think there’s way too much emphasis placed on “motivation” and “willpower.” Instead, I think it’s better to understand how human behavior works, and use it to your advantage.
Here are the five most important things I’ve learned about becoming more disciplined, and I hope it helps you.
Win the Morning, Win the Day
It’s a big challenge to have a productive day – That’s 24 hours. It can become overwhelming!
Instead, I only focus on two things.
- I make sure I have a good night’s sleep. If I don’t sleep well, then I’m not on my A game the next day.
This means I go to bed early, I avoid screens at night, I make the room colder, etc.
- Next, instead of trying to have a productive day…I laser focus on my mornings. If I get the first hour right, then the rest of my day will go smoothly.
This means a solid morning routine.
Mine is roughly wake up, use restroom, drink 20oz water, and walk my dog. That’s it. It looks simple but I’m hydrating myself, getting some exercise, and getting some sunlight.
Now I have energy to crush the rest of the day.
Vs imagine starting the day late, checking your phone for an hour, fapping, and then starting work.
It’s about starting your day with MOMENTUM.
Manipulate Your Environment
Make it easier for yourself if you want to DO an action. Make it harder for yourself if you want to AVOID an action.
I use to play my PS4 a lot more than I should. It’d be lunch time and I’d go over to my living room and play a few quick games. A 15-minute break would turn into two hours.
How did I stop? In the morning I’d simply unplug my PS4, and put it in my closet. I increased the “resistance.”
I used my phone as my alarm clock for a period of time. I’d wake up and immediately start checking my social media / reddit. That would turn into an hour, and I’d start my day distracted.
Now I use a standard alarm clock. I turn off my phone the night before and I don’t turn it back on until lunch time the next day.
I’m able to control my behavior because I slightly increase the resistance.
You can also DECREASE the resistance. I was moving to a new city and going to the gym was important to me. One of my criterias for my apartment was to have one with a really nice gym.
Before I struggled going to the gym because it was a 30 minute drive. I only went twice a week. Now I have a place that’s in my Condo. I go to the gym 5 times a week.
Nothing’s changed except the resistance.
Start Small
I’ve noticed on the internet that people literally want to change their lives overnight. That’s not the way things work.
It’s like being able to bench 100lbs and expecting to bench 1000lbs the next day. It takes time.
Don’t have an all or nothing mentality.
A few years ago I started meditating. I told myself, “I’m going to meditate 30 minutes a day!”
That’s challenge.
For the next six months I’d only hit my goal maybe 5 times a month, and I’d keep beating myself up.
And then I decided to start small. My goal was to meditate 1 minute a day. I did that. The small wins kept me motivated. That turned into 5 minutes, and now it’s 10 minutes a day.
So for the past few years I’ve meditated consistently 10 minutes a day. I checked my Calm app and I’ve logged over 200 hours of meditation.
It’s a marathon, not a sprint. It’s ok to start small.
Think of your discipline ability as a muscle. If you’ve never done an act before then your muscle is small. Small muscles gets small goals!
Keep Score
What gets measured, gets results.
If you don’t keep score then how do you know if you’re winning or not? Keep score and make it specific.
I always avoided keeping score in the past. I think deep down I was afraid of knowing that I wasn’t putting in my best effort.
Don’t say meditate in the morning as a goal. HOW LONG?
As far as trackers…don’t overcomplicated it. I like HabitBull on SmartPhones. Creating your own spreadsheet is great too.
Score can mean different things depending on your goal.
If you’re trying to save money, then track how much you’re spending on a weekly basis. If you’re trying to gain weight then track your macros. If you’re trying to read more books, then track how many minutes a day you spend reading.
A common excuse is that it takes too much time…
Keeping track of my macros takes 3 minutes a day using myfitnesspal. I keep track of every penny spent using YNAB and it takes me 10 minutes a month.
You know what takes too much time? Putting in a lot of effort and not getting any results.
Is it Optional, or is it a Non-Negotiable?
What does a non-negotiable mean? It means it has to be done no matter what.
A few weeks ago I decided I wanted to do Yoga everyday for 20 minutes. I was trying to figure out where I could get it in my schedule.
I then asked myself, how important is this? Well it’s important to me because of x, x, and x.
Then why not turn it into a non-negotiable?
That means I have to do it no matter what. I think of it like life or death. Someone has a gun to my head and if I don’t do it everyday, then I’m dead. That’s non-negotiable.
In practical terms that means I do Yoga first thing in the morning, before I start work. It means I’m not allowed to sleep and call it a day unless I do Yoga.
Guess what? I’d done it 30 days in a row because I have this attitude.
It’s not optional.

YouTuber Daniel ‘PeeWeeToms’ Thomas, Who Vlogged His Battle With Cancer, Has Passed Away
YouTube vlogger Daniel ‘PeeWeeToms’ Thomas passed away Friday afternoon. His parents, brothers, and wife took to his channel to thank his audience for their support, and to announce that they will be posting videos on the channel in the future — including some “surprises” Thomas prepared, his mother said.
For those of you who hadn’t been following, Dan had been sharing his cancer journey with his followers online since his diagnosis of a rare type of cancer called a sarcomatoid carcinoma back in 2015.
Offering hope to hundreds of followers, he shared his own personal experiences with the illness while posting information in blogs and Q&A sessions in a bid to help others, raise awareness about various forms of cancer and also urge viewers to be persistent at the doctors if they were suffering from symptoms.
Dan’s YouTube channel description reads: “Be your own advocate, always follow things up yourself, persist, make sure they follow up regularly and that you don’t hide symptoms. Explain everything even if it seems trivial!
“Don’t be scared to get stuff checked, even if it’s nothing it’s better to be safe than sorry.”

Mom Sues After Son Doesn’t Make Varsity Soccer Team

The mother of a St. Louis high school student is suing after her son did not make the varsity soccer team and was not allowed to play on the junior varsity team, according to KTVI.
The woman’s attorney said the issue in the case, filed in federal court, is age and sex discrimination. Her son is only identified as “John Doe” in court papers.
Friday morning, Ladue High School officials said if a junior does not make the varsity team, the boy cannot play again on the junior varsity team. The school said this is to give younger students a chance to develop their skills so that they will be prepared to try out for varsity.
The student’s mother says her son, a junior who already played on the junior varsity team, is good enough play again on the same team and should be allowed to do so, despite not making the varsity squad.
The coach sent the family an email that said their son was in consideration when it came to picking varsity team members. He wrote that the boy has holes in his technical ability and decision-making.
The family appealed the coach’s ruling to the superintendent who decided the family’s complaint was unsubstantiated.
The mother’s suit also claims her son is the victim of age and gender discrimination because she says the rules are different for the girls’ soccer team.
The coach’s testimony indicated the seven juniors cut from the varsity team were not good enough to play with on the junior varsity team. He said the reason he said nice things about John Doe was to build his self-esteem and not punch him in the gut after being cut from the varsity team.
The lawyer for John Doe also introduced documents that he said show player performance ratings given by coaches that rank John Doe above other boys who made varsity.
Also in courtroom testimony, it was revealed that Ladue does not have a policy keeping juniors from playing junior varsity sports. It depends on how many students try out for a certain sport and how many spots are on the team. The coach said this applied to both the girls’ and boys’ team.
The judge did not decide Friday if John Doe will be put on the junior varsity team as his mother wants. The judge plans to decide on Monday.

Preschool Worker Charged For Running Toddler Fight Club
A former preschool employee is facing nearly two dozen charges after reportedly encouraging children at a daycare to fight on the playground, then posting videos of it to social media.
The Columbus Dispatch reports 30-year-old Chavay Williams, of Columbus, was charged Wednesday with 21 counts of child endangering.
Court records say Williams posted a video on Snapchat in June showing children fighting at Playtime Pre-School. The video, captioned with words like “knock out” and a boxing glove emoji, shows children crying and trying to escape a fenced-in playground during the fights.
The video also shows some of the children crying and “using a chair to try to escape the playground area while staff recorded the activity without a response,” according to court records.
Williams was fired after police and Playtime learned of the video. She told detectives she wanted to show parents how their children acted.
Police say a teacher who failed to intervene hasn’t been charged and will be treated as a witness.
If convicted, the maximum sentence on each of the 21 charges would be six months in jail.

Not much. They go hand-in-hand.

Lesson 1: The #1 Myth About What Women Really Want Debunked
Men often think they can’t have the women they want because they don’t have enough money or good enough looks.
Let’s be real – money and good looks will get the woman’s attention, but that is all. It’s like a nice billboard advertisement it gets your attention but it doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll buy the product. The media has done a great job at making you believe in the erroneous assumption that money and six pack abs is the path to get your dream girl.
When you use money to take a woman out to nice dinners and to buy her gifts too early in the relationship, the woman will begin to think the man is trying to BUY her affection. Women see this as manipulation… and a LACK OF CONFIDENCE. Both of these are instant attraction killers. The woman may still answer your calls and let you take her out, but that is simply because she enjoys free stuff.
And who doesn’t?! Think about it.
You take this woman out and buy her stuff. You take her to a nice dinner. And then she heads home and meets the guy she really wants to be with. This guy does nothing for her except hang out, have fun with her and build tension yet he is the one taking her home while the other guy just dropped $150+ in one night on a date that lasted 1.5 hours.

Women want men who have the confidence to know that he can have a good time with her without pulling out his wallet for everything. Very few men know this, and guy who worked his tail off for the sole purpose of attracting women through power cannot even comprehend this fact. If you spend too much money on a woman or do too many favors for her, you are subtly telling her that your pocketbook is ALL YOU HAVE TO OFFER.
And if she actually likes this then my advice to men is: RUN!
Personality is the key to being good with women and dating. It’s organic, it’s natural, and it’s who you are.
Deep down, women are attracted to your personality more-so than any other trait of a man. When you build up your personality you simultaneously increase your attractiveness.
Lesson 2: How To Take Women Off The Pedestal And Reclaim Your Masculinity
When you ask a woman what she want’s in a man one of the first thing she’ll say is “a nice guy”. Yes, it’s what women want, but it’s not what they respond to. And I am not suggesting that you go completely 180 right now and turn into an arrogant jerk either.
Ok, you’ve eaten a Snickers bar right? Deep down in there is the soft chewy center of a man. It’s not a bad thing to be soft and vulnerable inside, but just be aware that women are not necessarily ATTRACTED to the soft, limp man until she’s first seen the HARD side of him and knows it’s there.
Because when you’re soft (expressing feminine character), you put the woman in a masculine role. Typically, a woman can only feel attraction for a man when she is in her feminine, therefore as a man you need to step into the masculine dominant role more.
You become soft because you have the scarcity mentality. You’re not thinking about the big picture. You think there are just a few women out there and there’s nothing you can do about it. You think: “There is NOBODY out there for me so I better treat this one girl amazing because I don’t know if and when I will ever experience this again”.

When you start thinking like this, you start liking girls that remotely show any signs of interest in you. You think you can’t create that same connection with another girl, so you settle for less than you deserve without even realizing it
YOU NEED TO REMOVE THE SCARCITY MENTALITY FROM YOUR LIFE AND SWITCH TO THE ABUNDANCE MENTALITY.
It is strictly social conditioning.
There is more than one girl that you can have this feeling with. In fact, there are billions of women out there. And you can date these women when you take women off the pedestal you hand crafted out of gold for her.
Stop placing women on pedestals!
It doesn’t serve you and women don’t like it in the long run.
Check this out: Let’s say you meet a guy as a friend and then after only a few days he started buying you a bunch of stuff and paying for all your food and drinks. Then texts to make sure you got home ok, and “likes” all your facebook posts. Sends you random gifts. What a weird dude…
Do you know what the pedestal does? It allows women to recline into the comfort you lavish them with, put their foot in your mouth that gives too many fake compliments, buys too many gifts, always being available and lets her walk all over you. Too early man it’s over before it started…
You minus well lay on the floor and tell her to walk all over you!
Always be a gentleman, and don’t be a little boy. Women will only respect you for how much you respect yourself.
Believe it or not, women hate being put on a pedestal! When you put women on pedestals, you see them as an overly valued commodity and not as a regular human being, which further pushes her away and into the arms of another man who respects himself.
Put yourself in the woman’s shoes…
Imagine a woman chasing you. She is constantly calling you. Every morning you get a text and you only hung out twice. She gets upset when you hang with your friends and you are not even dating. She left you an emotional voice mail when you forgot to respond to her text one time…This girl is crazy right? That’s the same as the nice needy guy. Don’t be that guy!
Nothing scares a woman off faster than a guy who becomes emotionally involved way too quickly. It is desperate, and makes the girl think: “What is wrong with this guy? Why is he in love with me already? Why is he pausing his life for me when we just met?
Something must be wrong with him she’ll think.
The guys that care too much lowers his own value and doesn’t create sentiments of allure because guys that care too much are telling women– through concern, through availability, through his being there too much- that he is in fact, not special or unique at all. He is just kind of there. He is more available than hydrogen, more common than dirt, and freer to talk to than the operator at Home Depot – but a smooth operator he is not..
Ultimately, the girl wants the guy that doesn’t need her to be happy, but wants her to be apart of his life.
Ideally, the guy wants her really bad. But NEVER should he want her so much that he’ll start putting her on a pedestal and start valuing her over himself and his own life.
She’ll run faster than Usain Bolt in the Olympics and any person who has respect for himself would do the same.

When I moved in with my gf, she had just graduated with a masters in accounting and was working as a public accountant. I moved in after being with her for 2 weeks. At the time, I was coming out of a divorce and I was afraid of being alone. That’s why I rushed in…
Before I moved in she told me about her $80,000 in debt. She was making $60,000 a year. I stepped up and said I would pay the rent and utilities so that she would have the extra money to pay her debt down.
Its 30 months later now. She quit her job 10 months ago because she didn’t like the work load or the people she worked for. She wanted to get a CPA to make more money, she said, and she wanted to quit so that she could have time study for the exam. I supported her decision.
Then she did not study very hard, took one part, failed and decided to get a new job. She interviewed a few times. Then she decided to stop looking for work. Just told me one day… she doesn’t want to work.
Now I’m told, as a man – I need to take care of all the money things. Her college debts are my problem now. She refuses to work, she might try to make some money sewing. She says I need to support her. She tells me it’s only $1,000 a month more and that I don’t know how to spend my money and that she should manage my cash flow.
She says her loan problem is a man’s problem. I just need to make more money.
I’m feeling used – boundaries violated…
