The Daily Man-Up: The Importance of Being on Time

$
0
0

“The habit of being prompt once formed extends to everything — meeting friends, paying debts, going to church, reaching and leaving place of business, keeping promises, retiring at night and rising in the morning, going to the lecture and town-meeting, and, indeed, to every relation and act, however trivial it may seem to observers.” –William Makepeace Thayer, Tact and Grit, 1882

Being punctual strengthens and reveals your integrity. If you tell someone that you will meet them at a certain time, you have essentially made them a promise. And if you say you’ll be there at 8:00, and yet arrive at 8:15, you have essentially broken that promise. Being on time shows others that you are a man of your word.

Being punctual shows you are dependable. A man can always be found at his post, carrying out the duties needful for that time. People know they can rely on such a man – if he says he will be there, he’ll be there. But if a man is not punctual, others cannot depend on him — they do not know where he will be when they need him. His associates will begin to feel he cannot organize his own time, and these doubts will seep into matters beyond the clock, as it naturally raises the question: “If he is careless about time, what else is he careless about?”

Benjamin Franklin once said to an employee who was always late, but always ready with an excuse: “I have generally found that the man who is good at an excuse is good for nothing else.”

Being punctual builds your self-confidence. Showing up on time not only tells other people you are dependable, it teaches you that you can depend on yourself. The more you keep the promises you make, the more your self-confidence will grow. And the more you gain in self-mastery, the less you will be at the mercy of your compulsions and habits, and the more in control of your life you will feel.

Being punctual shows your respect for others. Being late is a selfish act, for it puts your needs above another’s. You want an extra minute to do what you’d like, but in gaining that minute for yourself, you take a minute from another, which is why….

Being late is a form of stealing. That’s a tough truth, but it’s a truth nonetheless. When you make others wait for you, you rob minutes from them that they’ll never get back. Time they could have turned into money, or simply used for the things important to them. In coming to meet you at the agreed upon hour, they may have made sacrifices – woken up early, cut short their workout, told their kid they couldn’t read a story together – and your lateness negates those sacrifices. If you wouldn’t think of taking ten dollars from another man’s wallet, you shouldn’t think of stealing ten minutes from him either. Being punctual shows you value time yourself, and thus wouldn’t think of depriving others of this precious, but limited resource.

19 Year-Old Instagram Star Reveals The Truth Behind Her Perfect Photos

teen instagram star reveals truth about photos

Essena O’Neill is a 19 year-old Instagram star from Australia. At the age of 15, she began posting photos of herself on social media hoping to become “Facebook famous.”

Over the course of 4 years, Essena built a social media empire with more than 766,000 followers on  and more than 250,000 YouTube subscribers. To her thousands of fans, it seemed like she had it all.

But in reality, Essena was very unhappy.

She realized that her social media life was unauthentic, and now she’s on a mission.

Essena announced to her followers that she is quitting social media and is editing the captions on her “perfect photos” to tell the truth behind the pictures…

“I was obsessed with ‘likes’. Well, really, I was obsessed with the idea of being liked by others,” she wrote on her website. “I somehow managed to convince myself that when I was ‘Facebook Famous’ I would forever be happy. I figured, the more people that clicked ‘like’ on my photos, the more people actually liked me in real life. Pretty simple right? To be Facebook Famous meant everyone liked you. Girls wanted to be your friend, boys wanted to date you. Everyone talked about you, watched you, stalked you, wanted to be you. It was my dream at 15.”

“Girls would upload together and have sleepovers revolving around ‘watching their photos’. People would gossip about likes at school, over text, to teachers, to parents… ‘She got 200 likes, she’s basically a model now’.”

“Craving attention validated through social media I believe shows a gap in real life connections.”

“We just keep putting up staged photos in desperate hopes others will approve. I have a lot to learn… but I am enough. Right here, right now, I am enough. I don’t have to be or do anything, I am already everything I want to be… it lives inside of me. Not on a screen.”

Pretty Girls Make The World Go Round

The Daily Man-Up: Social Media Is Ruining Your Self-Esteem

$

(photo: @dcanies)

It’s 7am and you hear your iPhone start buzzing through your heavy slumber. It’s your alarm. You have to be at work in thirty minutes. You shut off your alarm, but you don’t set down your phone to get ready. The first thing you do is open up your Instagram app. It’s a natural habit at this point to check your social media when you get up in the morning. When the app opens up, the first picture you see is of that guy in a mansion with 10 beautiful girls around him. You get this sting of jealousy inside of you. “Why can’t I be him?” You say to yourself as you continue to click on his profile and scroll through more of his pictures. You know it’s just making you feel worse but you can’t stop. You finally look at the time. 8:16am. You fling yourself out of your bed, shower and throw on some clothes. You grab your bag, and right as you’re about to leave out the door you take one final look in the mirror. You remember back to that guy on Instagram and think to yourself again, “Why can’t I be him?”

This is a common routine for not only myself, but probably a lot of guys. We are in a constant state of “Why can’t I be him?” We never want to be ourselves anymore. We want to be him. We want that lifestyle, the money, the body. A lot of this is due to the effects of social media on our society today. It is a toxic and dangerous world, social media is. It used to just be the magazines and television that distorted self image, but now we have Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr and other social media platforms. The way social media projects onto people’s self-esteems is heartbreaking and terrifying.

When people post on Instagram, they want you to only see the good side of their lives. Laying on a beach in Florida, kissing your significant other on News Years, a “candid” shot of you and your friends laughing. It’s always this depicted and distorted image of a perfect life. When we see these pictures, we automatically think that these people have perfect lives. That these people themselves are in fact perfect. But, actually none of them are and neither are you. And that is okay because no one is perfect. We are constantly comparing ourselves to one another. Always wishing we were somebody else. Wishing we had someone else’s life. But we need to remember that none of that is real. Instagram, along with other social media, is not what it seems. People want you to think they are indeed flawless humans when really they aren’t. We are flawed, we are all imperfect, and that is what makes us human.

I know it’s easier said than done. But, I have come to a solution for myself. I have decided to limit my time on social media. Instead of scrolling through my feed and constantly feeling horrible about myself, I pick up a book. I work toward my goals. I hang out with my friends. I do things that make me feel good and make me happy. Stop torturing yourself by comparing. You are the only person who lives in your body, take care of it and learn to love it. Self-esteem is a fragile and hard thing to deal with, especially at a young age. It is hard to love yourself, I know that believe me. Self-acceptance and self-love is a long and painful road, but I know you will get there one day. Put down your cell phone, enjoy your life, and enjoy YOURSELF.

The Daily Man-Up: The #1 Habit to Build Self Discipline and Resilience

$
0
0

Skill, talent, ability, these are all useless unless paired with self-discipline.

Self-discipline is the fire that awakens you at 5am to get up and obliterate your heavy leg workout while it’s cold and stormy outside.

Skill won’t motivate you to get out of bed.

Self discipline is the drive that forces you to sit down and write 1,000 words per day even when you feel as if it’s the last thing you want to do.

Talent won’t make you sit in that chair and put pen to paper.

Over the years I have learned that it is no skill nor talent that’ll pave the way to the live I want to live, it’s consistency.

Consistency compounds your small, day to day wins over time.

Consistency requires self discipline.

The Cold Shower

I attribute the iron discipline I’ve built over the last 3 years to my daily cold showers.

There’s no hiding it, cold showers are uncomfortable.

Freezing cold water (especially in winter!) is uncomfortable and you’re willingly going out of your way to endure it.

The act of forcing your body to withstand the freezing cold temperature of the water gushing out of your shower as the tap is turned as far to the ‘cold’ side as possible is not only invigorating, but when performed daily will build both self-discipline and resilience.

The cold shower is one of several staple habits in my morning routine and I guarantee when you start your day with a 5 minute cold shower the jobs and annoyances you’ve been dreading doing won’t look so bad anymore, you’ve already won because you’ve conquered the hardest, most uncomfortable part of your day only moments after waking up.

Perspective

The cold shower puts everything into perspective.

You no longer give up when it comes time to push out that final rep on your bench press, because you successfully endured a cold shower a few hours earlier that day which makes this last rep a breeze in comparison.

Writing 1,000 words a day is hard and the majority of the time you probably don’t feel like doing it, but you rose early that morning and took your 5 minute freezing cold shower which, without a doubt is harder and more uncomfortable than inking your thoughts on a notepad.

You know what you have to do, you know it’s going to suck but you grit your teeth and do it anyway.

That’s what the winner does.

He knows what he plants now he’ll harvest later.

The loser complains and never steps foot in the shower.

Why the Mets Still Pay Bobby Bonilla $1.19 Million Every July 1

bobby bonilla contract day

Most people celebrate the Fourth of July with some fireworks and hotdogs. Bobby Bonilla celebrates it by cashing a check worth $1,193,248.20. That’s because, like clockwork, every July the former Met receives an annual payout from an early 00s deal concocted by a life insurance agent. Yep, even though Bonilla retired from baseball in 2003 and hasn’t played Major League Baseball since 2001, the 55 year old has the good fortune to still be a part of team payroll until, drumroll please… 2035.

Towards the end of his career when it came time to negotiate with The Mets, Bobby Bonilla was smart enough to secure one of the most forward thinking contracts in sports history. He knew The Mets wanted him gone but technically owed him $5.9 million. He also knew he had a young son and daughter who would be looking to go to college, and as a 36 year old, he likely had many years worth of life to live. So at this point, Bobby and his agents offered a unique compromise: The Mets would release Bobby to play for another team and they would delay the $5.9 million payment for 11 years, with interest. In essence, The Mets agreed to pay Bobby a total of $29.8 million (instead of $5.9 million) in 25 annual installments of $1.192 million, starting in the year 2011. When he received his first payment, Bobby was 48 years old and had not played in the big leagues for 10 years. He has basically guaranteed himself a big league salary every year for the rest of his life.

The Bernie Madoff Connection

In 1986, Real estate developer Fred Wilpon purchased 50% of The New York Mets for an undisclosed sum. He purchased the remaining 50% for $135 million in 2002. Wilpon was also one of the biggest investors in Bernie Madoff’s Ponzi scheme hedge fund. Prior to the fund’s December 2008 collapse, Madoff was returning a consistent (and completely fake) double digit rate of return every year. With those returns in mind, Wilpon knew that The Mets would actually make a huge profit by deferring Bonilla’s $5.9 million. Even though that meant agreeing to pay him more than five times the amount they owed ($29.8 million), Wilpon could safely estimate that the Mets would make $60-70 million off $5.9 million over those 25 years investing with Madoff.

Unfortunately, as we all know now, Bernie Madoff’s investment fund was actually a gigantic Ponzi scheme that wiped out between $20 and $65 billion in wealth for thousands of investors. Wilpon, who was under the false impression that he had made $300 million investing with Madoff, had potentially lost as much as $700 million. Not only did this completely invalidate the justification for Bobby Bonilla’s contract but it almost forced Wilpon to sell The Mets to cover his debts. In 2011, Wilpon nearly sold 50% of The Mets to a billionaire hedge fund manager named David Einhorn, but was eventually saved by loans from Major League Baseball and Bank of America. Bobby Bonilla meanwhile is living the good life.

With stunning views stretching from Downtown Los Angeles all the way to the ocean, LeBron’s new digs were just constructed in 2017. Tucked behind gates up a long driveway, the traditional-style home is a masterpiece of light and design. Step inside to the soaring great room and custom chef’s kitchen, where natural French oak and marble floors reclaimed from Spain create the ultimate sense of luxury. Upstairs, there are four en suite bedrooms, including the luxurious master suite with dual bathrooms, showroom-level walk-in closets, and a private patio. In case LeBron wants to preserve his leg muscles, a rooftop terrace has direct elevator access. A spacious day-lit lower level features a theater room, wine cellar, cigar room (with air purifying technology!) and an onyx bar. There’s also an auto gallery, because true ballers have no need for normal garages. A guest suite and an indoor/outdoor gym connect to a spa with a steam room, sauna, shower, and massage room. Sliding pocket doors off the main level create an indoor/outdoor flow to a stunning backyard with a rolling grass yard, oversized pool and spa, as well as a heated dining loggia and outdoor kitchen with a BBQ and beer taps.
