You prove why you were born every day and every minute by the things you do and by the things you don’t do. ~Chad Howse

[Tweet “You prove why you were born every day and every minute by the things you do and by the things you don’t do.”]

There are a lot of babies that don’t make it out of the womb. There are others who die in infancy.

There are children and teens who die early deaths and here I sit thinking about what it is I should be doing.

Every minute I give a reason for my life. I determine whether it’s a good reason or a bad one, whether I’m worthy of the gift of life or whether it was wasted on me.

The harsh reality is that most of our lives are wasted. Many spend more time in avoidance than in actual action. Many others set to be mediocre not understanding the travesty of such a pursuit, the waste of such an attempt when the choice to pursue something greater is also on the table.

Few live with the tenacity of someone who understands that, not only are their days numbered, but millions didn’t even get the chance at the thing they now waste in laziness and mediocrity.

We prove we’re worth the chance by living.

Living, however, isn’t found in seeking safety nor falling in line. Living is using fear as a compass, something to guide you to, not from.

Living isn’t found in ease but in challenges, and in constantly finding greater challenges.

It exists in daring greatly, getting into the arena of life and getting your ass kicked while you’re in there, but getting up time and time again.

Life isn’t found in self-pity, in envy, in the narcissism and cynicism that pervades so much of our society.

Are you worth the gift?

The Ecocapsule: A Portable House That Lets You Live Off The Grid

Imagine having the complete and utter freedom to live off the grid and in the middle of an isolated valley or on top of a mountain with stunning panoramic views.

Well, it could soon be a reality thanks to the Ecocapsule: a new, teeny tiny smart home powered entirely by the sun and the wind. The company behind the capsule, Nice Architect, call it “dwelling with the spirit of freedom.”

The Ecocapsule is a micro-shelter that offers a variety of sustainable offerings. Ultra-portable, the capsule is powered by solar and wind energy, includes rainwater collection and filtration, and even has a tiny kitchenette that can be used to prepare a hot meal.

The pod fits two people and allows its inhabitants to live off the grid for up to a year. Each 14x7x7-foot unit comes with solar panels, a retractable wind-turbine, and the capacity to capture rainwater.

The built-in 750W wind turbine and 2.6-square-meter array of high efficiency solar cells (600W output) power the Ecocapsule. A dual-power system and high-capacity battery (9,744Wh capacity) ensures the rounded shell stays operable even during times of low solar and wind activity.

In addition, the high-tech shelter is optimized for rainwater collection. Each Ecocapsule weighs approximately 1,5000 kilograms and can fit inside a standard shipping container.

The company says the Ecocapsule has a “wide range of applications: from an independent research station or a tourist lodge to an emergency housing or a humanitarian-action unit.”

The pods can be shipped, airlifted, towed or even pulled by a pack animal.

The walls are padded with high performance thermal insulation to save energy and maintain a comfortable indoor temperature.

Each pod comes fitted with a kitchenette with running water, a flushing toilet, and a hot shower.

In the egg-spaced shape measuring 4.5 meters (14.6 feet) in length, 2.4 meters (7.9 feet) in width, and 2.5 meters in height (8.2 feet), there seems to be enough space to compactly fit all the home necessities.

The total usable floor space is eight square meters (86 square feet), enough space, say the designers, to comfortably fit two adults. The home with a tiny footprint includes a folding bed, two large operable windows, a working/dining area, shower and flushable toilet, storage space, and a built-in kitchenette with running water.

The Ecocapsule will be available for pre-order at the end of 2015, with delivery in the first half of 2016.

Mark Twain’s 9 Tips For Living An Awesome Life

mark twain

1. Approve of yourself.

“A man cannot be comfortable without his own approval.”

If you don’t approve of yourself, of your behaviour and actions then you’ll probably walk around most of the day with a sort of uncomfortable feeling. If you, on the other hand, approve of yourself then you tend to become relaxed and gain inner freedom to do more of what you really want.

This can, in a related way, be a big obstacle in personal growth. You may have all the right tools to grow in some way but you feel an inner resistance. You can’t get there.

What you may be bumping into there are success barriers. You are putting up barriers in your own mind of what you may or may not deserve. Or barriers that tell you what you are capable of. They might tell you that you aren’t really that kind of person that could this thing that you’re attempting.

Or if you make some headway in the direction you want to go you may start to sabotage for yourself. To keep yourself in a place that is familiar for you.

So you need give yourself approval and allow yourself to be who you want to be. Not look for the approval from others. But from yourself. To dissolve that inner barrier or let go of that self-sabotaging tendency. This is no easy task and it can take time.

2. Your limitations may just be in your mind.

“Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.”

So many limitations are mostly in our minds. We may for instance think that people will disapprove because we are too tall, too old or balding. But these things mostly matter when you think they matter. Because you become self-conscious and worried about what people may think.

And people pick up on that and may react in negative ways. Or you may interpret anything they do as a negative reaction because you are so fearful of a bad reaction and so focused inward on yourself.

If you, on the other hand, don’t mind then people tend to not mind that much either. And if you don’t mind then you won’t let that part of yourself become a self-imposed roadblock in your life.

It is, for instance, seldom too late to do what you want to do.

3. Lighten up and have some fun.

“Humor is mankind’s greatest blessing.”

“Against the assault of laughter nothing can stand.”

Humor and laughter are amazing tools. They can turn any serious situation into something to laugh about. They can lighten the mood just about anywhere.

And a lighter mood is often a better space to work in because now your body and mind isn’t filled to the brim with negative emotions. When you are more light-hearted and relaxed then the solution to a situation is often easier to both come up with and implement. Have a look at Lighten Up! for more on this topic.

4. Let go of anger.

“Anger is an acid that can do more harm to the vessel in which it is stored than to anything on which it is poured.”

Anger is most of the time pretty pointless. It can cause situations to get out of hand. And from a selfish perspective it often more hurtful for the one being angry then the person s/he’s angry at.

So even if you feel angry at someone for days recognize that you are mostly just hurting yourself. The other person may not even be aware that you are angry at him or her. So either talking to the person and resolving the conflict or letting go of anger as quickly as possible are pretty good tips to make your life more pleasurable.

5. Release yourself from entitlement.

“Don’t go around saying the world owes you a living. The world owes you nothing. It was here first.”

When you are young your mom and dad may give a lot of things. As you grow older you may have a sort of entitlement. You may feel like the world should just give you what you want or that it owes you something.

This belief can cause a lot of anger and frustration in your life. Because the world may not give you what expect it to. On the other hand, this can be liberating too. You realize that it is up to you to shape your own life and for you to work towards what you want. You are not a kid anymore, waiting for your parents or the world to give you something.

You are in the driver’s seat now. And you can go pretty much wherever you want.

6. If you’re taking a different path, prepare for reactions.

“A person with a new idea is a crank until the idea succeeds.”

I think this has quite a bit of relevance to self-improvement.

If you start to change or do something different than you usually do then people may react in different ways. Some may be happy for you. Some may be indifferent. Some may be puzzled or react in negative and discouraging ways.

Much of these reactions are probably not so much about you but about the person who said it and his/her life. How they feel about themselves is coming through in the words they use and judgements they make.

And that’s OK. I think it’s pretty likely that they won’t react as negatively as you may imagine. Or they will probably at least go back to focusing on their own challenges pretty soon.

So what other people may say and think and letting that hold you back is probably just fantasy and barrier you build in your mind.

You may find that when you finally cross that inner threshold you created then people around you may not shun you or go chasing after you with pitchforks. 🙂 They might just go: “OK”.

7. Keep your focus steadily on what you want.

“Drag your thoughts away from your troubles… by the ears, by the heels, or any other way you can manage it.”

What you focus your mind on greatly determines how things play out. You can focus on your problems and dwell in suffering and a victim mentality. Or you can focus on the positive in situation, what you can learn from that situation or just focus your mind on something entirely else.

It may be “normal” to dwell on problems and swim around in a sea of negativity. But that is a choice. And a thought habit. You may reflexively start to dwell on problems instead of refocusing your mind on something more useful. But you can also start to build a habit of learning to gain more and more control of where you put your focus.

8. Don’t focus so much on making yourself feel good.

“The best way to cheer yourself up is to try to cheer somebody else up.”

This may be a bit of a counter-intuitive tip. But as I wrote yesterday, one of the best ways to feel good about yourself is to make someone else feel good or to help them in some way.

This is a great way to look at things to create an upward spiral of positivity and exchange of value between people. You help someone and both of you feel good. The person you helped feels inclined to give you a hand later on since people tend to want to reciprocate. And so the both of you are feeling good and helping each other.

Those positive feelings are contagious to other people and so you may end up making them feel good too. And the help you received from your friend may inspire you to go and help another friend. And so the upward spiral grows and continues.

9. Do what you want to do.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did so. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

Awesome quote. And I really don’t have much to add to that one. Well, maybe to write it down and keep it as a daily reminder – on your fridge or bathroom door – of what you can actually do with your life.

The Story Of Chiune Sugihara: The “Japanese Schindler”

$
0
0

On July 31 1986, Chiune Sugihara passed away peacefully in a Japanese hospital.  This quiet, unassuming family man single-handedly saved the lives of at least 6,000 Jews during World War II, and while he is one of many hundreds of people that could not reconcile their own code of morality with that of their governments at that time, his efforts to rescue people have gone largely unnoticed by the world.

Born at the turn of the 20th century, Sugihara joined the Japanese Foreign Ministry as a young man and learned Russian (he also knew Chinese, English, French and German). In August 1939, just before the outbreak of World War II, he arrived in the then-capital of Lithuania, Kaunas, to serve as a vice consul at the Japanese Consulate-General there.

One morning in July 1940, a group of Polish Jews who had fled eastward after Germany invaded their home country gathered outside the Japanese diplomatic facility in Kaunas. Sugihara noticed the refugees and inquired about their situation. He was told they were seeking transit visas to enable them to pass through Japan on the way to other countries that were willing to take them in. At the time, a rail journey across the Soviet Union followed by a sea crossing to Japan was one of the few potential paths of escape from the expanding Nazi empire for these Jews.

Sugihara consulted with the Japanese Foreign Ministry, which informed him the refugees did not meet the visa requirements. However, Sugihara decided he could not abandon the Jews to their fate.

“It was a humanitarian issue,” Sugihara said in an interview later in life. “I did not care then if I would be fired.”

Working for more than 18 hours, day after day, between July 31 and August 28, 1940, Chiune manually filled out some 300 visas a day – more than he would normally do in a month. People queuing outside the consulate started climbing over the fences, at which point Chiune promised them that as long as there was a single person left, he would not abandon them.

Even as they boarded the train to leave Kaunas, Chiune and Yukiko were still handing out visas. As he prepared to depart, Chiune flung blank sheets of paper from the train windows, with just the consulate seal and his signature, leaving the stamp so that the refugees could forge these vital documents themselves.

In total, Sugihara issued 2,140 visas. But since those holding a visa could bring their families with them, thousands more were able to escape almost certain death or incarceration in a ghetto or concentration camp.

On his return to Japan in 1947, Sugihara was retired from the Foreign Ministry with a small pension. Some sources say he was dismissed because of his insubordination in Kaunas. Following the unceremonious dismissal, he held a variety of part-time jobs as an interpreter and translator, and finally found a position for 15 years in a Japanese export company that did business with Moscow.

Since the Sugiharas never spoke about what they did, it was only in 1969 that their story began to emerge. An Israeli diplomat posted to Tokyo launched a search for the man who had saved his life by issuing his family with a visa. Eventually, more survivors came forward and testified to the Yad Vashem Martyrs and Heroes Remembrance Authority in Jerusalem.

In 1985, Sugihara was awarded Yad Vashem’s highest honor as a ‘Righteous among the Nations.’ Many other tributes followed his death in 1986. The Chiune Sugihara memorial park, ‘The Hill of Humanities,’ in his birthplace of Yaotsu, was built by the people of the town in his honour. In 1999, the Lithuanian government inaugurated Sugihara House in the old consulate building in Kaunas. In April 2000, the United Nations held a ceremony honouring 65 diplomats from 22 countries who risked their careers and lives by helping Jews escape from the Nazis. Among the names was Chiune Sugihara.

According to some estimates, 100,000 descendants of Jewish refugees owe their lives to Sugihara’s bureaucratic heroics. Almost 45 years after signing the life-saving visas, Chiune was asked what motivated him to help. He said, ‘They were human beings and they needed help. I’m glad I found the strength to make the decision to give it to them.’

funny pictures and videos of the day

For the past 12 years, a Chesapeake-Lab mix named Bruno has been regularly walking four miles (eight miles round trip) to downtown Longville from his country home to socialize, collect treats, and hang around. His almost daily commute has made Bruno a beloved town legend.

“Everybody knows Bruno,” resident Sharon Rouse told KARE11 News. “[You] may not know the people, but you’ll know Bruno.”

The pup belongs to Larry and Debbie LaVallee, who took Bruno in after he appeared in a box on their driveway over a decade ago. They tried to keep him tied up, but the dog’s desire to roam was too great, and he started making his way to town every day.

Now, he’s somewhat of a celebrity, with regular stops at city hall, the ice cream shop, and the back door of a local grocery store, where employees help Bruno fuel up with deli counter scraps. People know and greet Bruno, sometimes to the surprise of the LaVallees, who only know a fraction of their dog’s many admirers. His wandering has even earned him the title of “Town Dog and Ambassador,” which is set in literal stone in a Longville statue.
