There Are Some Things You Just Can’t Argue With

The Daily Man-Up

$

In today’s world we are constantly bombarded with beautiful people and things on the news and media, and it’s easy to think  “if only I had a girlfriend, or if only I had all these things, or all this money, then I would finally be happy.

I mean we live in a capitalistic society. Money, fame, and beauty is the whole purpose of life right?

The truth is that the quest for things is a thirst that will never be quenched.

Once you have one thing, it’ll be another thing. And another thing. And another thing.

Enough will never be enough.

I used to deal with some pretty heavy depression.

And through this journey, I came to the realization that my happiness was entirely dependent on external sources.

My happiness was derived from how popular I was at the time, how many likes I was getting on social media, how much money I was making and if it was enough to impress people.

And of course, how often I was able to get drunk or high and how good looking the girl on my arm was that night.

If you think about it, none of those things are really under your control.

They’re all outside factors that you don’t really have much say about.

When it comes down to it, it’s almost as ridiculous as letting your mood be dependent on the weather.

No matter how much you love your friends and they love you – everyone eventually gets let down. And it’s not necessarily their fault – they’re just human.

You’re human.

A none of those things are inherently bad things.

But just like we were talking about how money is a neutral object that turns into what we make it – they’re all super easy to get sucked into when you don’t have a solid foundation of happiness beforehand.

Again there’s a balance that comes with everything. Without balance – anything can turn into something that’s not good for you.

So what can we control?

Our own personal growth.

Our own personal passions.

Our own pursuit of finding what really defines us.

Once you’re able to prioritize what matters in your life – all of those outside factors will only make you happier, but won’t affect you as much when they let you down.

There’s nothing like knowing your happiness is based on yourself. Keep growing, keep learning, keep following your dreams and passions, and no outside factors will ever be able to take that happiness away from you.

Betty, Sweden, Maine: “My husband died. I can smoke in the house now”.

Christopher and Alice, Portland, Maine: “Time alone is rare with busy lives, two kids, and a cat. Any time we get we savour, as summer just seems to seep away”.

Cody, Portland, Maine: “It’s been really frustrating. I can’t do anything. I can’t hang out with my friends, can’t play sports. I’m stuck here … just me and my illness” (rheumatic fever).

Jessica, Milford, New Hampshire: “Sometimes life throws you in all sorts of directions. The most important part about life is to remember you are exactly where you need to be”.

Holly and Nathan, Deep Gap, North Carolina: “We have been off the grid for 20 years”.

Nito, Cambridge, Massachusetts: “There are days I don’t leave my room”.

Pepere, Jay, Maine: “I am so quiet in the morning when I wake up so I don’t disturb her. Then I remember she is gone”.

Claire, Westford, Massachusetts: “I have always cherished my bedroom because it is cosy and reminds me of being a child. Now I am growing up and experiencing all sorts of new things. I like that my room doesn’t really change”.

Germaine: “I wait every year for my Christmas cookies. I hide them from everyone.”

Jr and Thor: “My bed is in a closet so I love to jump on my Mom’s bed.”

Carroll: “Are we somewhere?”

Mid aged couple: “My room is finally pretty, but us… not so much!!”

Young Family: “I hate my room, but we waited so long for kids, I love being all togeher even in this tiny room.”

Winslow and Juno: “I’m still in a transient stage, but now I have a cat.”

Nazi Rally being held at the “Cathedral of Light” in Nuremberg. Designed by Albert Speer, the “cathedral” actually consisted of 152 anti-aircraft searchlights, at intervals of 12 metres, aimed skyward to create a series of vertical bars surrounding the audience. 1930’s.

Jewish prisoners of Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in Germany, on a transport to Theresienstadt north of Prague, moments after they were liberated by the US forces on April 1945

It’s Friday, the 13th of April, 1945. A few miles northwest of Magdeburg there was a railroad siding in wooded ravine not far from the Elbe River. Major Clarence L. Benjamin in a jeep was leading a small task force of two light tanks on a routine job of patrolling. The unit came upon some 200 shabby looking civilians by the side of the road. There was something immediately apparent about each one of these people, men and women, which arrested the attention. Each one of them was skeleton thin with starvation, a sickness in their faces and the way in which they stood-and there was something else. At the sight of Americans they began laughing in joy-if it could be called laughing. It was an outpouring of pure, near-hysterical relief.

Saigon execution: Murder of a Vietcong by Saigon Police Chief, 1968

After Nguyen Ngoc Loan raised his sidearm and shot Vietcong operative Nguyen Van Lem in the head he walked over to the reporters and told them that: “These guys kill a lot of our people, and I think Buddha will forgive me”. Captured on NBC TV cameras and by AP photographer Eddie Adams, the picture and film footage flashed around the world and quickly became a symbol of the Vietnam War’s brutality. Eddie Adams’ picture was especially striking, as the moment frozen is one almost at the instant of death.

For all the image’s political impact, though, the situation wasn’t as black-and-white as it’s rendered. What Adams’ photograph doesn’t reveal is that the man being shot (named Nguyen Van Lem) was the captain of a Vietcong “revenge squad” that had executed dozens of unarmed civilians earlier the same day.

Burnt out Panzer IV and crew during the Battle of the Falaise Pocket, August 1944

The battlefield at Falaise was unquestionably one of the greatest “killing fields” of any of the war areas. Forty-eight hours after the closing of the gap I was conducted through it on foot, to encounter scenes that could be described only by Dante. It was literally possible to walk for hundreds of yards at a time, stepping on nothing but dead and decaying flesh.

In 1940 Häyhä was hit by an explosive bullet in his lower left jaw. All of Häyhä’s kills were accomplished in fewer than 100 days – an average of just over five kills per day – at a time of year with very few daylight hours

Human Oddities of Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus – 1924

Paratroopers of Easy Company (Band of Brothers), at Berghof (Adolf Hitler’s home in the Bavarian Alps), 1945

In May 1945, as the war in Europe drew to a close, two great prizes remained. The first, Berlin, was almost completely in the hands of the Soviets. The second, Berchtesgaden, home to Adolf Hitler’s famous mountain retreat, remained to be captured.

For months, General Dwight D. Eisenhower and other Allied commanders had worried about the possible existence of a ‘national redoubt’ in Bavaria and Austria. They were concerned that thousands of Nazi diehards would take to the rugged mountains, sustain themselves with copious supplies stored up over the course of many years and fight a guerrilla-style war against the Allies. Fortunately, the redoubt existed more in the minds of German propagandists and the nightmares of Allied leaders than in the Bavarian Alps. By May most Allied officers had begun to understand this. They faced a German army with very little fight left. Hordes of prisoners clogged the autobahn. The German soldiers still resisting did so primarily against the Russians and most of the others fled westward in hopes of surrendering to the British or the Americans.

The Berghof was Adolf Hitler’s home in the Obersalzberg of the Bavarian Alps near Berchtesgaden, Bavaria, Germany. Other than the Wolfsschanze (“Wolf’s Lair”), his headquarters in East Prussia for the invasion of the Soviet Union, Hitler spent more time at the Berghof than anywhere else during World War II. It was also one of the most widely known of his headquarters, which were located throughout Europe.

Rebuilt, much expanded and renamed in 1935, the Berghof was Hitler’s vacation residence for ten years. In late April 1945 the house was damaged by British aerial bombs, set on fire by retreating SS troops in early May, and looted after Allied troops reached the area. The Bavarian government demolished the burnt shell in 1952.

Pretty Girls Make The World Go Round

The Daily Man-Up

The first symptom of the process of our killing our dreams is the lack of time. The busiest people I have known in my life always have time enough to do everything. Those who do nothing are always tired and pay no attention to the little amount of work they are required to do. They complain constantly that the day is too short. The truth is, they are afraid to fight the Good Fight.

The second symptom of the death of our dreams lies in our certainties. Because we don’t want to see life as a grand adventure, we begin to think of ourselves as wise and fair and correct in asking so little of life. We look beyond the walls of our day-to-day existence, and we hear the sound of lances breaking, we smell the dust and the sweat, and we see the great defeats and the fire in the eyes of the warriors. But we never see the delight, the immense delight in the hearts of those who are engaged in the battle. For them, neither victory nor defeat is important; what’s important is only that they are fighting the Good Fight.

And, finally, the third symptom of the passing of our dreams is peace. Life becomes a Sunday afternoon; we ask for nothing grand, and we cease to demand anything more than we are willing to give. In that state, we think of ourselves as being mature; we put aside the fantasies of our youth, and we seek personal and professional achievement. We are surprised when people our age say that they still want this or that out of life. But really, deep in our hearts, we know that what has happened is that we have renounced the battle for our dreams – we have refused to fight the Good Fight.

When we renounce our dreams and find peace, we go through a short period of tranquility. But the dead dreams begin to rot within us and to infect our entire being.
We become cruel to those around us, and then we begin to direct this cruelty against ourselves. That’s when illnesses and psychoses arise. What we sought to avoid in combat – disappointment and defeat – come upon us because of our cowardice.

And one day, the dead, spoiled dreams make it difficult to breathe, and we actually seek death. It’s death that frees us from our certainties, from our work, and from that terrible peace of our Sunday afternoons

“Be the hero of your own movie. If your life was a movie and it started now. Forget about whatever financial disasters you’ve had, personal failures, relationship failures. What would the hero of your life’s movie do right now? Do that, do those things. We define ourselves far too often by our past failures. We look at our past and we say, “Well that’s me”. That’s not you, you are this person right now. You’re this person right now, you’re the person who’s learned from those failures and you can choose to be the hero of your own movie right now. Write down your goals, write down things you want to improve, write down things you won’t tolerate from yourself, write down things that you’ve done in the past that you never want to see yourself do again. And go forth, from here, as the hero of your own movie. Build momentum. Build confidence and momentum with each good decision that you make from here on out. You can do it, anyone can do it. We live in unique times. We live in one of the rarest times in human history where you can choose almost all the input that comes your way, whether it’s the movie that you watch, the books you read, the podcasts you listen to. You can choose to be inspired. Do that. Do that and be the hero of your own movie.”
