Leadership is a responsibility other people give to you. You can’t claim it on your own. You might act like a leader, but you can’t force people to follow you, no matter how hard you try. If they don’t want to follow you it is like pushing rope.

You get from others exactly what you put into them. If you are honest, loyal, and respectful in your dealings with others, then (the people who matter) they will do the same to you. Those who don’t, don’t matter.

You must always have the most integrity out of everyone, and must always be the first to act. You can’t wait for someone else to take responsibility. If there is something that must be addressed then it is your role to address it first and as soon as it arises. If you slack off in this regard, then others will slack off in their responsibilities also.

Being a leader is not a part time role. You don’t get to be a leader some days and not a leader on other days.

You are the example. People will and do act in accordance with the standard that you set. If you accept poor quality outcomes from yourself, then that is what those around you will produce as well.

Utilize your emotions and the emotions of those around you to help you achieve goals. Tell people you appreciate their work and that you are proud of their accomplishments. Express excitement and enthusiasm. Show determination and fortitude. Be sincere and vulnerable. People are attracted and inspired by honest emotion. Don’t be scared of it. It makes people feel human and helps people relate.

Make sure people know what they are working for, and make sure their reason for putting in effort is clear and personal. People are motivated by self interest. Know what their self interest is and find ways to align this with their goals in the work environment.

Push and challenge people in a way that is directly related to their personal and professional development. Don’t be afraid to make people feel uncomfortable, but let them know you have their back. By definition, no one likes to step out of their comfort zone, but that is the only place progress is made.

Always give people 100% of your attention when people are speaking to you, and always make sure you understand what they are saying. As a leader, asking questions and taking notes demonstrates your commitment and desire to understand and the importance you give to their matters.

If something can be addressed right away, then do it straight away. Never ever delay something that can be done immediately. There will always be more work than there is hours to do it in. Feedback is most effective when it is given close to the event.

Give lots of feedback. Always be calibrating and communicating. Try and allocate at least one uninterrupted hour per fortnight for personal 1-1 review and evaluation with your direct reports. The best way you can make people feel valued is by giving them your time and attention and support.

Good feedback has incredible results. It shows people you are invested in them and their work and are paying attention to their outcomes.

Give people performance measures which they can measure themselves and which they know how to influence. A good measure should not require its own overhead to maintain and manage.

Don’t kill yourself with work. Those who you lead need to step up themselves one day, and if you make your job seem excessive and overwhelming, then no one will be inspired to step up to the plate themselves.

You don’t have to make everyone feel like they are your favorite, but each of your employees need to feel like they have a special relationship with you.

At the end of the day, leadership is about getting the best out of those who you lead, by helping and inspiring them. Leadership is a at its core, a role of servitude, where you are constantly thinking of how you can help those you lead. A good leader doesn’t force people to work, they remove the barriers and inspire, motivate and assist people to want to work. Especially in technical fields, people have gone through a lot of hard training to get where they are. They WANT to do a good job and want opportunities to be successful. They shouldn’t need to be forced, rather their inner desire that got them to where they are needs to be honed and developed and further inspired to help them to overcome even greater challenges and achieve even greater results.

Slash has had a defibrillator implanted since age 35. Years of drug and alcohol abuse had given him congestive heart failure, and he was given as little as 6 days to live in 2001.

Duff used to drink a gallon of vodka per day. He then ‘cut that back’ to 10 BOTTLES OF WINE A DAY.

His pancreas swelled up to the size of a rugby ball and was told that if continued drinking he would die soon. He’s been the picture of health ever since.

Following the death of Nicole van den Hurk, her stepbrother falsely confessed to killing her to get her body exhumed for DNA testing, thus leading to the arrest and prosecution of her attacker.

On 17 January 2014, the police arrested a 46-year-old man identified as Jos de G. in Helmond, after his DNA matched traces found on the remains and at the crime scene. De G. had previously been convicted of three rapes, being sentenced to three years preventive detention and compulsory treatment for one of them. It was apparent from further examination that Van den Hurk had been raped prior to her death. The case went to trial in April at the court of Den Bosch, and on 3 July the Openbaar Ministerie charged De G. with rape and manslaughter. On 21 November 2016, he was found guilty of rape and sentenced to five years’ imprisonment. In determining the penalty, the court took into account the finding that De G. was insane at the time of the crime. He was found innocent of manslaughter.

The 7th time that park ranger Roy Sullivan was struck by lightning coincided with the 22nd time he fought off a bear with a stick.

Unusually, he was hit while in his truck, driving on a mountain road—the metal body of a vehicle normally protects people in cases such as this by acting as a Faraday cage. The lightning first hit nearby trees and was deflected into the open window of the truck. The strike knocked Sullivan unconscious and burned off his eyebrows and eyelashes, and set his hair on fire. The uncontrolled truck kept moving until it stopped near a cliff edge.

He was hit again on August 7, 1973, while he was out on patrol in the park, Sullivan saw a storm cloud forming and drove away quickly. But the cloud, he said later, seemed to be following him. When he finally thought he had outrun it, he decided it was safe to leave his truck. Soon after, he was struck by a lightning bolt.

“Although he never was a fearful man, after the fourth strike he began to believe that some force was trying to destroy him and he acquired a fear of death.”

A man survived the sinking of a ship in 1871, leaving him traumatized afterwards. Some forty years later he was finally able to overcome his fears and sail again… only to die on the Titanic.

Ramon Artagaveytia of Uruguay was one of the 65 passengers to survive the fire and sinking of the ship America on December 24, 1871, carrying 164 passengers. He escaped by jumping off the ship and swimming for his life. According to a letter he wrote to his cousin, Enrique Artagaveytia, he suffered from nightmares and woke up in the middle of the night hearing screams of: “Fire! Fire! Fire!” Even during the simplest of trips, he would stand on the deck wearing his lifebelt out of fear.

On April 10, 1912, he boarded the Titanic. In one of his letters, he expressed the assurance he felt because they had wireless telegraph on board. He felt that unlike the time nobody could see their light signals when America sank, they could communicate with the whole world instantly. However, the Titanic sank on April 15, 1912, and Artagaveytia was one of the 1,500 who died.

Three people died inside a flight simulator in a flight safety building at the Wichita’s Mid-Continent Airport, Kansas, when a real plane crashed into it.

The 53-year-old pilot, Mark Goldstein, was a retired air traffic controller who had been recognized for his safety efforts by the National Air Traffic Controllers Association. He later became a contract pilot and was ferrying this plane from Wichita to Mena, Arkansas when the plane lost an engine during takeoff. The two-story building of the Flight Saftey Cessna Learning Center at Wichita’s Mid-Continent Airport had around 100 people in it at the time of the crash. Three people who were in the flight simulator at that time were found dead along with the pilot whose body was found on the roof.

Medal of Honor recipient, Roy Benavidez, was attacked by an NVA infantry battalion. He had 37 puncture wounds, an exposed intestine, a broken jaw, and eyes caked in blood. He was assumed to be dead until he managed to spit in the face of the doctor who was zipping him up in a body bag.

On May 2, 1968, 1,000 men of the NVA infantry battalion surrounded a 12-man Special Forces patrol, which included nine Montagnard tribesmen. Master Sergeant Roy Benavidez was monitoring the radio when he heard someone appealing for help. Carrying a medical bag and a single knife, Benavidez got off the helicopter to help the patrol. Soon after entering enemy grounds, an NVA soldier stabbed him with a bayonet. Benavidez pulled the bayonet out and killed the attacker with his own knife.

After the battle ended, Benavidez was thought to be dead as he had 37 puncture wounds, an exposed intestine, a broken jaw, and his eyes were caked in blood. As soon as the examining doctor was about to zip up the body bag, Benavidez spat blood on the doctor’s face giving a sign that he was alive. After courageously fighting in the battle for six hours and recovering from the injuries, he received a Distinguished Service Cross for his exceptional bravery along with four purple hearts.

Intelligent disobedience occurs when a service animal trained to help a disabled person goes directly against the owner’s instructions in an effort to make a better decision. This behavior is a part of the dog’s training and is central to a service animal’s success on the job.

When a blind person wishes to cross a street and issues an instruction to the assistance dog to do so, the dog should refuse to move when such an action would put the person in harm’s way.

The animal understands that this contradicts the learned behavior to respond to the owner’s instructions: instead it makes an alternative decision because the human is not in a position to decide safely.

The dog in this case has the capacity to understand that it is performing such an action for the welfare of the person.

In another example, a blind person must communicate with the animal in such a way that the animal can recognize that the person is aware of the surroundings and can safely proceed. If a blind person wishes to descend a staircase, an animal properly trained to exhibit intelligent disobedience will refuse to move unless the person issues a specific code word or command that lets the animal know the person is aware they are about to descend stairs.

This command will be specific for staircases, and the animal will not attribute it to stepping off a curb or up onto a sidewalk or stoop. In a similar circumstance, if the person believes they are in front of a step and they wish to go down, but they are in fact standing in front of a dangerous precipice (for example, a loading dock or cliff), the animal will refuse to proceed.

Nearly 100 million sharks were used to be killed each year in China, mostly for their fins. However in few couple of years, 85% of Chinese consumers gave up shark fin soup, largely as a result of campaigning by ex-NBA player Yao Ming. (article)

What makes this egregious is that the sharks are caught, de-finned, and thrown back alive without their fins where they float around and die or sink the floor and die. It’s sort of like cutting off the chicken’s wings and throwing it on the ground and leaving it to die.

There is a Star Wars comic called Into the Great Unknown in which Han Solo and Chewbacca crash into Earth after using Hyperspace blindly. Native Americans kill Han, and his body is discovered by Indiana Jones 126 years later while searching for Sasquatch—which turns out to be Chewbacca.

Han Solo and Chewbacca run afoul of an Imperial fleet after leaving the planet Hovan 99. As they evade a Star Destroyer and several TIE Fighters, Solo takes the Millennium Falcon blindly into hyperspace. The ship emerges in an unfamiliar system that contains several planets and moons, and the pair lands on a blue world after detecting life on it.

The ship’s rear repulsorlift controls give out and they are forced to crash land. As they search for a settlement, Solo and Chewbacca are attacked by a group of Humans who wield spears, bows, and axes. Chewbacca fights them off with his bowcaster and his own strength, but Solo is struck by several arrows and begins to slowly bleed to death. Anticipating that he will not survive, he asks his co-pilot to return him to the Millennium Falcon, where he passes away in the captain’s chair.

126 years later, three Humans make their way through the same forest—an archaeologist named Dr. Jones, his sidekick Shorty, and their guide, in search of a legendary monster that has been sighted in the area. Chewbacca watches from afar as they come across the Millennium Falcon, board the ship, and discover Solo’s skeleton. The skeleton feels familiar to Jones, and, rather than continue his search for the monster, he decides to leave it as part of the “great unknown.”

Performance Artist Stood Still for 6 Hours and Let People Do What They Wanted to Her Body

In 1979 Marina Abramovic, an as yet unknown performance artist living in Soviet Russia, created one of the most controversial, fascinating, and dangerous performance pieces in art history. She called it Rhythm 0, and it was as much a work of daring contemporary art as it was a massive social experiment that pulled the veil on human nature, and laid bare the consequences of leaving ourselves, our bodies and our lives in the hands of strangers.

For six hours, she put her life and body completely in the hands of strangers, turning herself into an object to be used, as one wished. During this time she agreed to remain passive, and unresponsive until the experiment was over. Abramovic decided that she would just quietly and limply observe. For the audience, there were no immediate consequences.

At first, only photographers were going near her.

The premise of “Rhythm 0” was deceptively simple: Abramovic would stand still for six hours straight while the people who came to see her were urged to do whatever they wanted to her using one of 72 objects that she had placed on a table.

Abramovic stood in the middle of the room with a notice board containing these words:

Instructions.

There are 72 objects on the table that one can use on me as desired.

Performance.

I am the object.

During this period I take full responsibility.

Duration: 6 hours (8 pm – 2 am)

Among the things on the table were “objects of pleasure” and “objects of destruction.” Among the harmless objects were feathers and flowers. The dangerous stuff included a knife, razor blades, and a loaded gun.

There were those who changed her position.

What happened in the next six hours was horrifying, to say the least.

“In the beginning the public was really very much playing with me,” remembers the artist. They were gentle, placing a rose in her hand, kissing her and feeding her cake. But then, “it became more and more wild” as the public became increasingly aggressive. “It was 6 hours of real horror,” says Abramovic solemnly, “They would cut my clothes, they would cut me with a knife close to my neck, drink my blood and put a plaster over the wound. They would carry me around half naked put me on the table and stab the knife between my legs into the wood.”

They took the scissors off the table and cut off all her clothes, one man tried to rape her, another loaded the pistol with the bullet and pointed it at her head. A night at the gallery turned into a horror show. “It was a really difficult piece,” she explains, “because I just stood there in front of the table” while the public continued their assault.

Anyone who knew the artist could have predicted how far the performance might go. Marina was known to be completely committed to her craft. So committed, in fact, that she would have let audience members take her life if it ever got to that point. “There was a pistol with one bullet, so basically if the audience wanted to put the bullet in the pistol they could kill me. And I really wanted to take this risk, I wanted to know what the public is about, and what they are going to do in this kind of situation.”

“After 6 hours, which was like 2 in the morning, the gallerists came and announced that the performance was over. I started moving and start being myself, because until then I was there like a puppet just for them, and at that moment everybody ran away. People could not confront me as a person.”

These were regular people who probably set out to see a work of art that evening, but ended up torturing the artist. The moment she went from passive object to active agent, the audience was horrified to remember that they had been dealing with a human being all along. They could not confront the traces of torture they left behind on her body, as she walked towards them dripping with blood and tears.

After it was all over, Abramovic had this to say after the performance: “What I learned was that… if you leave it up to the audience, they can kill you…I felt really violated.” It is a terrifying yet fascinating lesson in the consequences of passivity.

Listen to Marina Abramovic talk about her frightening experience.

Abramovic noted:

“This work reveals something terrible about humanity. It shows how fast a person can hurt you under favorable circumstances. It shows how easy it is to dehumanize a person who does not fight, who does not defend himself. It shows that if he provides the stage, the majority of ‘normal’ people, apparently can become truly violent.”

Most guys make the mistake of making friends with a girl first in the hopes of working it into a meaningful relationship later.

This couldn’t be more wrong. Not only are they wasting their time and money on the girl, but they are also digging their own graves.

These men wait around with their heads down in the hopes that she will change her mind and become romantically interested in them. However, these men fail to recognize the most basic facts: If she wasn’t interested in you romantically in the beginning, what makes you think she will change her mind later?

What makes you think she’s not using you as a surrogate boyfriend until she finds somebody she really wants?

What makes you think that she isn’t just around for the ride while you spend your money and time on her?

The “Friendship Zone” is a trap… a trap so elaborate and strong that freeing yourself out of it is about as easy as climbing Mount Everest.

To her, being friends with you means she doesn’t have any sexual attraction towards you or have any romantic interest in you. You’re simply around to kill boredom or until she finds something else better to do.

She may at one point in time have found you attractive, but since she’s spent enough time with you, she now believes you are as challenging as a game of checkers with her grandma. You simply do not stir the electricity in her body and that’s why you are who you are: A Friend!

More often than not, once a girl has made you a friend, getting her to think of you romantically is damn near impossible. And this is what you’ll hear:“Can’t we just be friends?”

Just because you get along with her and are compatible with her in a lot of areas doesn’t mean you are compatible intimately. Besides all this, she knows you too much already, all the sense of being mysterious and being a challenge is already gone. You are basically in arms reach for the girl and about as exciting as a G-rated movie on a Saturday night.

So how do you avoid the friendzone?

Simple…

In the beginning do not approach her in the hopes of becoming just friends.

If you are attracted in any way — big or small — do not approach her looking for friendship. Always make your intentions known in the beginning.

Do not lurk around the far corner like a long-distance peeping-tom. Come on strong like the man you are and not as the chicken that you’ll become if you start a friendship.

Guys, if you are going to spend so much time and attention with a girl, you better and might as well make her your girlfriend. What have you got to show for it if she becomes just a friend?

Whenever you are interested in a woman, take her out on a real date. Don’t fool yourself by merely pretending to be a friend in the hopes of winning her over later.

– Adonis

Babe Ruth posing with fans 1925. He was a popular figure in the African American community because of his willingness to treat them as he would white fans, along with rumors of him being biracial

One of the big reasons that he was kept out of the manager role despite everyone agreeing that he was the best baseball player to ever set foot on the diamond was actually because they were certain that he would bring colored baseball players onto the team. The teams were so afraid of this and the backlash that it would cost them in their fandom and their reputation throughout the rest of the league, which was pretty supremacist at the time, that they decided not to hire him based on that fact alone. There was even a managerial spot open in Cleveland when he retired, but Alva Bradley, the owner of the Cleveland Indians at the time, refused to hire him. It’s not like there wasn’t fresh talent in the black community, because the Negro Leagues had plenty of worthy players who would have excelled in the MLB, but they were kept out systematically until Jackie Robinson in 1947.

Time is the raw material of getting anything worthwhile done.

Time is precious and valuable. More valuable than money. Time is the only element in the world that is irretrievable when it’s lost. Lose money and you can make more. Lose a job and you can find another. But lose time and it’s gone forever.

There are 168 hours every week. And you have an average of 2,400 minutes to yourself each week.

That is a monumental amount of time. Where could it possibly go? Or better still, where are you spending all those hours?

A lot can be achieved day if you know what you are doing at any point in time.

When you stop trying to manage your time and instead take ownership of it, it’s a whole lot easier to be productive and let go of everything you don’t want to do.

There are four real ways to spend your time: thought, conversation, actions and distractions. Choose wisely!

You alone can take ownership of your time and decide how much time to spend on your thoughts, conversations, actions and even purposeful distractions that will lead to your success.

“You can’t let other people set your agenda in life” says Warren Buffett.

If 80% of your results will come from 20% of your time, imagine if you got it so right, that you only needed to work that 20%.

Protect your time like a valuable investment.

Dog Spends Entire Weekend Staring At A Fish Tank

We’ve all spent a weekend on the couch staring at the television. Well Sophie the French Bulldog has a similar approach to vegging out for a few days. She spent Christmas weekend in her jammies, perched on an ottoman, gazing intently at a fish tank. It was the doggy version of a Netflix binge, and Sophie refused to look away, even for food.

The pictures show Sophie absolutely mesmerized. When her ottoman is moved, she simply adjusts her angle to get a better view. When her owner puts a towel over the fish tank, she sticks her head under it giving her a personal theater. Nothing stops the fish tank marathon.

Need to move the ottoman? Not a problem!

Whatcha doing?

Tank covered in towel = her own personal theater!

World War II gun turret in France

It was relatively isolated and came under heavy German attack, which inflicted a lot of damage and casualties. Requests to evacuate were denied by the French command, and as the Germans kept on shelling the place, a fire started, filling the structure with smoke. Every remaining defender who hadn’t been killed in the fighting died as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning. (apparently the levels got so high, they must have overwhelmed the gas masks most of the dead were wearing)

The Germans eventually went in with respirators, and found no survivors.
