When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill,
When funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about,
When he might have won if he’d stuck it out.
Don’t give up, though the pace seems slow –
You may succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than
It seems to a faint and faltering man;
Often the struggler has given up
When he might have captured the victor’s cup,
And he learned too late, when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out –
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are –
It may be near when it seems afar;
So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit –
It’s when things seem worst that you mustn’t quit.

The Russian Sleep Experiment

Russian researchers in the late 1940s kept five people awake for fifteen days using an experimental gas based stimulant. They were kept in a sealed environment to carefully monitor their oxygen intake so the gas didn’t kill them, since it was toxic in high concentrations. This was before closed circuit cameras so they had only microphones and 5 inch thick glass porthole sized windows into the chamber to monitor them. The chamber was stocked with books, cots to sleep on but no bedding, running water and toilet, and enough dried food to last all five for over a month.

The test subjects were political prisoners deemed enemies of the state during World War II.

Everything was fine for the first five days; the subjects hardly complained having been promised (falsely) that they would be freed if they submitted to the test and did not sleep for 30 days. Their conversations and activities were monitored and it was noted that they continued to talk about increasingly traumatic incidents in their past, and the general tone of their conversations took on a darker aspect after the 4 day mark.

After five days they started to complain about the circumstances and events that lead them to where they were and started to demonstrate severe paranoia. They stopped talking to each other and began alternately whispering to the microphones and one way mirrored portholes. Oddly they all seemed to think they could win the trust of the experimenters by turning over their comrades, the other subjects in captivity with them. At first the researchers suspected this was an effect of the gas itself…

After nine days the first of them started screaming. He ran the length of the chamber repeatedly yelling at the top of his lungs for 3 hours straight, he continued attempting to scream but was only able to produce occasional squeaks. The researchers postulated that he had physically torn his vocal cords. The most surprising thing about this behavior is how the other captives reacted to it… or rather didn’t react to it. They continued whispering to the microphones until the second of the captives started to scream. The 2 non-screaming captives took the books apart, smeared page after page with their own feces and pasted them calmly over the glass portholes. The screaming promptly stopped.

So did the whispering to the microphones.

After 3 more days passed, the researchers checked the microphones hourly to make sure they were working, since they thought it impossible that no sound could be coming with 5 people inside. The oxygen consumption in the chamber indicated that all 5 must still be alive. In fact it was the amount of oxygen 5 people would consume at a very heavy level of strenuous exercise. On the morning of the 14th day the researchers did something they said they would not do to get a reaction from the captives, they used the intercom inside the chamber, hoping to provoke any response from the captives they were afraid were either dead or vegetables.

They announced: “We are opening the chamber to test the microphones step away from the door and lie flat on the floor or you will be shot. Compliance will earn one of you your immediate freedom.”

To their surprise they heard a single phrase in a calm voice response: “We no longer want to be freed.”

Debate broke out among the researchers and the military forces funding the research. Unable to provoke any more response using the intercom it was finally decided to open the chamber at midnight on the fifteenth day.

The chamber was flushed of the stimulant gas and filled with fresh air and immediately voices from the microphones began to object. 3 different voices began begging, as if pleading for the life of loved ones to turn the gas back on. The chamber was opened and soldiers sent in to retrieve the test subjects. They began to scream louder than ever, and so did the soldiers when they saw what was inside. Four of the five subjects were still alive, although no one could rightly call the state that any of them in ‘life.’

The food rations past day 5 had not been so much as touched. There were chunks of meat from the dead test subject’s thighs and chest stuffed into the drain in the center of the chamber, blocking the drain and allowing 4 inches of water to accumulate on the floor. Precisely how much of the water on the floor was actually blood was never determined. All four ‘surviving’ test subjects also had large portions of muscle and skin torn away from their bodies. The destruction of flesh and exposed bone on their finger tips indicated that the wounds were inflicted by hand, not with teeth as the researchers initially thought. Closer examination of the position and angles of the wounds indicated that most if not all of them were self-inflicted.

The abdominal organs below the ribcage of all four test subjects had been removed. While the heart, lungs and diaphragm remained in place, the skin and most of the muscles attached to the ribs had been ripped off, exposing the lungs through the ribcage. All the blood vessels and organs remained intact, they had just been taken out and laid on the floor, fanning out around the eviscerated but still living bodies of the subjects. The digestive tract of all four could be seen to be working, digesting food. It quickly became apparent that what they were digesting was their own flesh that they had ripped off and eaten over the course of days.

Most of the soldiers were Russian special operatives at the facility, but still many refused to return to the chamber to remove the test subjects. They continued to scream to be left in the chamber and alternately begged and demanded that the gas be turned back on, lest they fall asleep…

To everyone’s surprise the test subjects put up a fierce fight in the process of being removed from the chamber. One of the Russian soldiers died from having his throat ripped out, another was gravely injured by having his testicles ripped off and an artery in his leg severed by one of the subject’s teeth. Another 5 of the soldiers lost their lives if you count ones that committed suicide in the weeks following the incident.

In the struggle one of the four living subjects had his spleen ruptured and he bled out almost immediately. The medical researchers attempted to sedate him but this proved impossible. He was injected with more than ten times the human dose of a morphine derivative and still fought like a cornered animal, breaking the ribs and arm of one doctor. When heart was seen to beat for a full two minutes after he had bled out to the point there was more air in his vascular system than blood. Even after it stopped he continued to scream and flail for another 3 minutes, struggling to attack anyone in reach and just repeating the word “MORE” over and over, weaker and weaker, until he finally fell silent.

The surviving three test subjects were heavily restrained and moved to a medical facility, the two with intact vocal cords continuously begging for the gas demanding to be kept awake…

The most injured of the three was taken to the only surgical operating room that the facility had. In the process of preparing the subject to have his organs placed back within his body it was found that he was effectively immune to the sedative they had given him to prepare him for the surgery. He fought furiously against his restraints when the anesthetic gas was brought out to put him under. He managed to tear most of the way through a 4 inch wide leather strap on one wrist, even through the weight of a 200 pound soldier holding that wrist as well. It took only a little more anesthetic than normal to put him under, and the instant his eyelids fluttered and closed, his heart stopped. In the autopsy of the test subject that died on the operating table it was found that his blood had triple the normal level of oxygen. His muscles that were still attached to his skeleton were badly torn and he had broken 9 bones in his struggle to not be subdued. Most of them were from the force his own muscles had exerted on them.

The second survivor had been the first of the group of five to start screaming. His vocal cords destroyed he was unable to beg or object to surgery, and he only reacted by shaking his head violently in disapproval when the anesthetic gas was brought near him. He shook his head yes when someone suggested, reluctantly, they try the surgery without anesthetic, and did not react for the entire 6 hour procedure of replacing his abdominal organs and attempting to cover them with what remained of his skin. The surgeon presiding stated repeatedly that it should be medically possible for the patient to still be alive. One terrified nurse assisting the surgery stated that she had seen the patients mouth curl into a smile several times, whenever his eyes met hers.

When the surgery ended the subject looked at the surgeon and began to wheeze loudly, attempting to talk while struggling. Assuming this must be something of drastic importance the surgeon had a pen and pad fetched so the patient could write his message. It was simple. “Keep cutting.”

The other two test subjects were given the same surgery, both without anesthetic as well. Although they had to be injected with a paralytic for the duration of the operation. The surgeon found it impossible to perform the operation while the patients laughed continuously. Once paralyzed the subjects could only follow the attending researchers with their eyes. The paralytic cleared their system in an abnormally short period of time and they were soon trying to escape their bonds. The moment they could speak they were again asking for the stimulant gas. The researchers tried asking why they had injured themselves, why they had ripped out their own guts and why they wanted to be given the gas again.

Only one response was given: “I must remain awake.”

All three subject’s restraints were reinforced and they were placed back into the chamber awaiting determination as to what should be done with them. The researchers, facing the wrath of their military ‘benefactors’ for having failed the stated goals of their project considered euthanizing the surviving subjects. The commanding officer, an ex-KGB instead saw potential, and wanted to see what would happen if they were put back on the gas. The researchers strongly objected, but were overruled.

In preparation for being sealed in the chamber again the subjects were connected to an EEG monitor and had their restraints padded for long term confinement. To everyone’s surprise all three stopped struggling the moment it was let slip that they were going back on the gas. It was obvious that at this point all three were putting up a great struggle to stay awake. One of subjects that could speak was humming loudly and continuously; the mute subject was straining his legs against the leather bonds with all his might, first left, then right, then left again for something to focus on. The remaining subject was holding his head off his pillow and blinking rapidly. Having been the first to be wired for EEG most of the researchers were monitoring his brain waves in surprise. They were normal most of the time but sometimes flat lined inexplicably. It looked as if he were repeatedly suffering brain death, before returning to normal. As they focused on paper scrolling out of the brainwave monitor only one nurse saw his eyes slip shut at the same moment his head hit the pillow. His brainwaves immediately changed to that of deep sleep, then flatlined for the last time as his heart simultaneously stopped.

The only remaining subject that could speak started screaming to be sealed in now. His brainwaves showed the same flatlines as one who had just died from falling asleep. The commander gave the order to seal the chamber with both subjects inside, as well as 3 researchers. One of the named three immediately drew his gun and shot the commander point blank between the eyes, then turned the gun on the mute subject and blew his brains out as well.

He pointed his gun at the remaining subject, still restrained to a bed as the remaining members of the medical and research team fled the room. “I won’t be locked in here with these things! Not with you!” he screamed at the man strapped to the table. “WHAT ARE YOU?” he demanded. “I must know!”

The subject smiled.

“Have you forgotten so easily?” The subject asked. “We are you. We are the madness that lurks within you all, begging to be free at every moment in your deepest animal mind. We are what you hide from in your beds every night. We are what you sedate into silence and paralysis when you go to the nocturnal haven where we cannot tread.”

The researcher paused. Then aimed at the subject’s heart and fired. The EEG flatlined as the subject weakly choked out, “So… nearly… free…”

The Werewolf of Wysteria – Albert Fish – convicted child rapist and cannibal, boasted he “had children in every state.”

Here is the letter he sent to the mother of one of his victims:

“My dear Mrs Budd,

In 1894 a friend of mine shipped as a deck hand on the steamer Tacoma, Capt John Davis. They sailed from San Francisco to Hong Kong China. On arriving there he and two others went ashore and got drunk. When they returned the boat was gone. At that time there was a famine in China. Meat of any kind was from $1 to 3 Dollars a pound. So great was the suffering among the very poor that all children under 12 were sold to the Butchers to be cut up and sold for food in order to keep others from starving. A boy or girl under 14 was not safe in the street. You could go in any shop and ask for steak – chops – or stew meat. Part of the naked body of a boy or girl would be brought out and just what you wanted cut from it. A boy or girls behind which is the sweetest part of the body and sold as veal cutlet brought the highest price. John staid there so long he acquired a taste for human flesh. On his return to N.Y. he stole two boys one 7 one 11. Took them to his home stripped them naked tied them in a closet then burned everything they had on. Several times every day and night he spanked them – tortured them – to make their meat good and tender. First he killed the 11 yr old boy, because he had the fattest ass and of course the most meat on it. Every part of his body was cooked and eaten except Head – bones and guts. He was roasted in the oven, (all of his ass) boiled, broiled, fried, stewed. The little boy was next, went the same way. At that time I was living at 409 E 100 St, rear – right side. He told me so often how good human flesh was I made up my mind to taste it. On Sunday June the 3 – 1928 I called on you at 406 W 15 St. Brought you pot cheese – strawberries. We had lunch. Grace sat in my lap and kissed me. I made up my mind to eat her, on the pretense of taking her to a party. You said Yes she could go. I took her to an empty house in Westchester I had already picked out. When we got there, I told her to remain outside. She picked wild flowers. I went upstairs and stripped all my clothes off. I knew if I did not I would get her blood on them. When all was ready I went to the window and called her. Then I hid in a closet until she was in the room. When she saw me all naked she began to cry and tried to run down stairs. I grabbed her and she said she would tell her mama. First I stripped her naked. How she did kick – bite and scratch. I choked her to death then cut her in small pieces so I could take my meat to my rooms, cook and eat it. How sweet and tender her little ass was roasted in the oven. It took me 9 days to eat her entire body. I did not fuck her, though, I could of had I wished. She died a virgin.”

Were all the geniuses of history to focus on this single theme, they could never fully express their bafflement at the darkness of the human mind. No person would give up even an inch of their estate, and the slightest dispute with a neighbor can mean hell to pay; yet we easily let others encroach on our lives — worse, we often pave the way for those who will take it over. No person hands out their money to passersby, but to how many do each of us hand out our lives! We’re tight-fisted with property and money, yet think too little of wasting time, the one thing about which we should all be the toughest misers.” — Seneca

Each day there will be endless interruptions: phone calls, emails, visitors, unexpected events. Booker T. Washington observed that “the number of people who stand ready to consume one’s time, to no purpose, is almost countless.” A philosopher, on the other hand, knows that these intrusions prevent us from doing the thinking and work we were put here to do. This is why they so diligently protect their personal space and thoughts from trespassers and needy neighbors. They know that a few minutes of contemplation are worth more than any meeting or report. They also know how little time we’re actually given in life — and how quickly our stores can be depleted.

It was the passing of a friend that reminded entrepreneur and investor Tim Ferriss how “too often, we spend time focusing on the trivial with people who contribute nothing but their own self-interest.” We must resist this, and instead prioritize and shun distractions — as Peter Drucker, one of the greatest business minds of the last century put it, “Force yourself to set priorities. Do first things first – and second things not at all.” Why would you do that if you think time is infinite? If you think you have time for it all, you’ll end up doing a lot of things you don’t need to do.

The Stoic philosopher Seneca reminds us that while we might be good at protecting our physical property, we are far too lax at enforcing our mental boundaries. Property can be regained; there is quite a bit of it out there — some of it still untouched by man. But time? Time is our most irreplaceable asset—instead of striving to make more of it, we can far more easily just stop wasting so much of it.

In Fellowship of the Ring, Legolas knows the deeper meaning behind Galadriel granting Gimli three of her hairs

If you’ve read the Silmarillion, you know who Fëanor was. If you don’t, Fëanor was the dickhead who created the Silmarils: three indescribably beautiful and magical jewels that contained the light and essence of the world before it became flawed. They were the catatlyst for basically every important thing that happened in the First Age of Middle Earth.

It is thought that the inspiration for the Silmarils came to Fëanor from the sight of Galadriel’s shining, silver-gold hair.

He begged her three times for single strand of her beautiful hair. And every time, Galadriel refused him. Even when she was young, Galadriel’s ability to see into other’s hearts was very strong, and she knew that Fëanor was filled with nothing but fire and greed.

Fast forward to the end of the Third Age.

Gimli, visiting Lorien, is also struck by Galadriel’s beauty. During the scene where she’s passing out her parting gifts to the Fellowship, Galadriel stops empty-handed in front of Gimli, because she doesn’t know what to offer a Dwarf. Gimli tells her: no gold, no treasure… just a single strand of hair to remember her beauty by.

She gives him three. Three.

And this is why Gimli gets to be an Elf Friend, people. Because Galadriel looks at him and thinks he deserves what she refused the greatest Elf who ever lived—- and then twice* that. And because he has no idea of the significance of what she’s just given him, but he’s going to treasure it the rest of his life anyway.

Just look at that smile on Legolas’s face in the last panel. He gets it. He knows the backstory. And I’m pretty sure this is the moment he reconsiders whether Elves and Dwarves can’t be friends after all

A Few Answers To Questions You Always Wondered About

How is World War II taught in German Schools?

When you grow up here and you are still rather young, you get the sense that you (as in Germans) fucked up in the past and its a lingering feeling but you are too young to understand or make sense of it.

As in you might wave to someone with your right arm and hold it up to long and someone scolds you for it or a parent quickly tells you to lower your arm and they try to tell you why.

In short Every german Student has at least 5+ years of history that is either directly or indirectly about WW2 and it’s effects on the world we live in today.

I can only speak of my personal experience which to make this easier to understand was 4 years in the Grundschule, followed by 6 years on the Realschule and topped of by 2 years on the FOS. (currently studying but there is no real impact)

Of these 12 Years i had History lessons starting at 6th grade officially. Something you quickly learn is that the education system at least where i was, had a very heavy focus on WW2 and the DDR (google Berlin Wall if in doubt).

We had 2 years in which we had the whole history from the Stone-age? to the Great War (WW1). the next years we intensely learned everything from the stability of Germany after WW1, the Nazis rise to power and WW2 itself.

When i mean intensely I mean we started in the 1920’s and worked ourself towards the war staying at specific events for long periods of times, such as the “Hitlerputsch” and later the “Kristallnacht”.

The war itself was explained from one front to the next and we jumped alot, but the largest fokus was on the “German Perspective”. We learned about Partisanen, Yugoslavia, the Pacific War, etc. later.

We had debates and where shown dokuments or videos about each topic.

Looking back what struck me as weird, was we coverd WW2 in large parts and there where hints here and there about the warcrimes, but they waited till 9th Grade and then unloaded a shitton of information on us stretched over months. (maybe they thought we where to young before)

I felt ill more than once after the X video was shown to us in which mass graves or Detention Camps where shown.

I visited the Concentration camp Dachau (and another smaller camp) with my school and there was a heavy focus on us knowing what exactly happend there, starting with numerous videos on people entering the camp and the piles of bodies.

I know it wasn’t meant as such by the Teachers, but you feel like a piece of shit, walking through a place in which countless lives have been ruined by your ancestors and you feel that weight, or it comes back. I still feel shitty whenever someone calls me a Nazi or accuses the Germans of being racist war criminals.

All in all i feel it was important that we had such a big focus on it, since i honestly believe in the statement, that those who don’t learn about history will repeat it.

In a nutshell, you know how Americans always say ‘Never forget’ when it comes to 9/11? Most Germans are like that with World War 2 and the holocaust.

What’s it like to go to the Orgy Dome at Burning Man?

The night we went to the orgy dome, the line was super long. I didn’t realize there was such a process to getting in. We were interviewed to make sure we were sober enough to consent and [to check] that we understood all the rules. Verbal consent is necessary to begin play with other groups and to introduce new activities. If you ask if you can play with a couple, you’d still need to ask, “Can I touch your breasts?” “Can I go down on you?” “Can I fuck you both in the butt?” Consent is an active process and can be removed at any point.

I’m glad they have that entry process, but I hadn’t expected them to take it so seriously. It’s like the DMV: You get a number, then you talk to one guy and take a test on the rules, then you wait some more. We’d done some molly and ketamine (not a full dose, just a bump). Waiting in line for an hour sober would have been horrible, but I guess I would have preferred to have been more sober during the experience so it’d be easier to come.

Inside, the main space has mattresses on either side of a main walkway. I was comfortable right away — once you see a lot of other people having sex, it becomes pretty easy to feel like you can do it too.

We got right down to business; you aren’t supposed to sit around and watch, because that would be creepy. I need a lot of concentration to come, and it wasn’t happening. Honestly, sex after a week and a half on the playa is not really all that sexy. My thighs were chapped from riding my bike, which kind of made some of the sex a bit uncomfortable. I also had an ingrown hair from trying to shave in my tent without enough soap and water, and I was self-conscious about that too.

The boys Eiffel towered me, meaning I was on my knees between them, giving one oral sex while the other penetrated me from behind. Then we got the idea for them to double penetrate me, which we hadn’t done before, but we didn’t have the lube required and gave up pretty fast.

The guys used a vibrator on me when we got back to camp later, and that did the trick.

What is the greatest military weapon in all of history?

What if I told you there was a weapon that would allow mere hundreds to conquer vast millionsA weapon so mighty, it made 1 soldier worth 300 enemies combatants. A weapon that could make 1 man worth 30,000. A weapon that left death and devastation in its wake, showing no mercy and wiping out entire armies, populations, and even entire races. A weapon that has shaped history, brought down empires, and annihilated millions.

This weapon enabled warriors numbering in the mere hundreds to conquer the greatest empire the American continent had ever seen to that day, an empire with an army of 300,000 fearsome warriors.

It allowed 1,000 people to conquer 30,000,000 — a weapon so great it helped make up for a 1:30000 disadvantage in total manpower.

It’s a weapon so powerful it has wiped out millions, killing 90% of the indigenous populations of the North and South American continents.

A weapon rooted not in technology or military strategy, but in biology. A weapon carried innately by certain soldiers which allowed them to obliterate those who lacked the proper protection.

You’ve probably guessed it by now.

What I am referring to is smallpox, a terrible biological weapon that made some of the most crushing and overwhelming conquests in history possible.

In 1519, Hernán Cortés landed in the Yucatan Peninsula with a small host numbering only in the hundreds. Within just two years, he entered Tenochtitlan, capital of the once-mighty Aztec Empire. He entered a city that had been devastated by smallpox — the disease even killed the Aztec Emperor Cuitlahuac. His victory was complete. The same story happened throughout the Americas, notably with Pizarro and the Inca Empire in South America.

Let’s examine the effects and effectiveness of Cortés mightiest weapon:

How do judges determine who wins a boxing match?

Professional Boxing

The scoring system used in professional boxing is called the 10-Point Must System. These are the basics for scoring a round:

  • Judges score on a 10-point scale. Most rounds will end 10-9, with the more dominant boxer receiving 10 points, the other receiving 9.

  • If a boxer is knocked down, he loses a point. If a boxer is knocked down twice, he loses two points. If both fighters are knocked down, the knockdowns cancel each other out.

  • While uncommon, if a fighter completely dominates a round but doesn’t score a knockdown, a judge can still score that round 10-8. If a judge deems the round completely even, both fighters receive 10 points.

  • When the referee sees fit, he can take away a point or two for an intentional foul; he can do the same for unintentional ones, but that usually occurs after at least a warning.

While you’d probably do well relying on the eyeball test to determine the winner of each round, it helps to know what a judge is looking for. These are the things that help determine which fighter won a round:

  • Effective Aggression – Being aggressive gives the impression of dominance, but unless the boxer is landing shots and not constantly getting countered, it’s not exactly “effective.” Judges look for effective aggression, where the aggressor consistently lands his punches and avoids those from his opponent.

  • Ring Generalship – The fighter who controls the action and enforces his will and style.

  • Defense – How well is a boxer slipping, parrying, and blocking punches? Good defense is important.

  • Hard and Clean Punches – To the untrained eye, it can appear as if a boxer is landing a lot of shots, when, in fact, most are being blocked or aren’t landing flush. A judge needs to look for hard shots that land clean.

If a fight goes this distance, the result is determined by the scorecards. Here are the possible outcomes:

  • Unanimous Decision – All three judges had the same fighter scoring more points.

  • Split Decision – Two of the three judges had the same fighter scoring more points (the winner), while the other judge had the other boxer scoring more points (the loser). Majority Decision – Two of the three judges had the same fighter scoring more points (the winner), while the other judge ruled the contest a draw.

  • Draw – A draw can occur when either two of the judges rule the contest a draw, or it can happen when one judge scores the bout for one fighter, another judge scores it for the other fighter, and the third rules it a draw.

Amature Boxing

Method of Scoring

  • A judge is advised to fixate in between the two boxers; do not develop a tendency to study or follow just one of the boxers.

  • Amateur boxing is scored on a point system, not on a round basis.

  • The winner is decided on the majority of judges, i.e., 5-0, 4-1 or 3-2.

  • If a boxer, in the opinion of the referee, is being outclassed or is receiving unnecessary and excessive blows, the bout shall be stopped and the opponent declared the winner.

  • If one boxer has a 20-point advantage (for Open and Under 19/Junior men), or a 15-point advantage (for Women and Junior Olympics/Cadets) over their opponent, the bout must be stopped except in the last round, and the boxer with the advantage is declared the winner.

What is it like to live in a small town in America?

That really depends on your definition of “small town.”

Under 10,000 Residents

You’ll find fierce school rivalries, usually centered around sports or music. These rivalries will still be held by adults, and since there’s rarely anything interesting happening in town, the annual “Big Game” – the sporting match held between the two largest schools – will be regarded as the most important event of the year. One newspaper will cling to life, its subscription base mainly consisting of people who haven’t yet discovered the Internet. The town’s mayor will often pretend to be a big-shot politician, and the police force will be particularly harsh on motorists who are just passing through.

Under 5,000 Residents

There will be one public school and one private school, and the student bodies will regard one another as being both alien and unfairly privileged. Although there are still too many people for everyone to know everyone else, gossip will travel like wildfire and rumors will be all but infinitely persistent. The favorite pastime of young adults will be using drugs, and the favorite pastime of older adults will be attending church.

Under 1,000 Residents

Drugs, church, and two restaurants that are owned by people who hate each other. The town mayor is also a plumber, and he’s sleeping with the divorcée who claims to have been an actress. Most of the town gossip is centered around the one guy who never interacts with anyone else (save for out of necessity). According to the townsfolk, he’s either a celebrity in disguise, a guy in witness protection, or an alien.

Under 500 Residents

That’s not a town, that’s a commune. Don’t drink the tea.

Under 100 Residents

Keep driving.

There Are Some Things You Just Can’t Argue With

People pray to win money or to be blessed with things in the future when they already have the blessing to create what they want; life. (Read This: Don’t Set Another Goal Until You Read This)

You’re born with enough to create what you want. It will take longer than you think, much longer, and it will be far more difficult than you think, but you are born with the capacities to create a great life.

Don’t dream about a gift, don’t pray for a gift, don’t wish you were given a gift.

The journey to success – however that’s defined in your heart – is where strength is acquired, toughness is developed, and grit is created.

Most people will blame God or society for them not having what they want, and they’ll never have what they want. Then there are those who realize that blessings they already have, like the ability to breathe, think, solve problems, and most importantly work harder than anyone else if they so choose, and they’ll take the steps necessary for success.

Wishing for a gift and praying for change is ignorant. It’s ignorant of the strength you can potentially create, the change you have the capacity to bring about.

It’s weak in that it puts the blame on someone or something else’s shoulders, giving you an excuse to work less, to quit, to take breaks and give just a little less than what’s necessary.

It’s scary when you realize that you’re responsible for where you are and where you want to end up.

It’s scary because there is no one to blame. You’re going to have to work alone, sometimes with no one around you to encourage you or lift you up. You’re going to fail, often, but within that failure there’s always an opportunity, one usually found in persistence.

When your back’s against the wall and you’ve hit rock bottom, rather than praying for a gift, pray for the strength to keep pushing, because you do have it in you, and pray for wisdom, for the intelligence and the clarity that will help you navigate the often murky waters of life to your promised land.
