I believe that the definition of definition is reinvention. To not be like your parents. To not be like your friends. To be yourself.

Completely.

When I was young I had no sense of myself. All I was, was a product of all the fear and humiliation I suffered. Fear of my parents. The humiliation of teachers calling me “garbage can” and telling me I’d be mowing lawns for a living. And the very real terror of my fellow students. I was threatened and beaten up for the color of my skin and my size. I was skinny and clumsy, and when others would tease me I didn’t run home crying, wondering why.

I knew all too well. I was there to be antagonized. In sports I was laughed at. A spaz. I was pretty good at boxing but only because the rage that filled my every waking moment made me wild and unpredictable. I fought with some strange fury. The other boys thought I was crazy.

I hated myself all the time.


As stupid at it seems now, I wanted to talk like them, dress like them, carry myself with the ease of knowing that I wasn’t going to get pounded in the hallway between classes. Years passed and I learned to keep it all inside. I only talked to a few boys in my grade. Other losers. Some of them are to this day the greatest people I have ever known. Hang out with a guy who has had his head flushed down a toilet a few times, treat him with respect, and you’ll find a faithful friend forever. But even with friends, school sucked. Teachers gave me hard time. I didn’t think much of them either.

Then came Mr. Pepperman, my advisor. He was a powerfully built Vietnam veteran, and he was scary. No one ever talked out of turn in his class. Once one kid did and Mr. P. lifted him off the ground and pinned him to the blackboard. Mr. P. could see that I was in bad shape, and one Friday in October he asked me if I had ever worked out with weights. I told him no.

He told me that I was going to take some of the money that I had saved and buy a hundred-pound set of weights at Sears. As I left his office, I started to think of things I would say to him on Monday when he asked about the weights that I was not going to buy. Still, it made me feel special. My father never really got that close to caring. On Saturday I bought the weights, but I couldn’t even drag them to my mom’s car. An attendant laughed at me as he put them on a dolly.

Monday came and I was called into Mr. P.’s office after school. He said that he was going to show me how to work out. He was going to put me on a program and start hitting me in the solar plexus in the hallway when I wasn’t looking. When I could take the punch we would know that we were getting somewhere. At no time was I to look at myself in the mirror or tell anyone at school what I was doing. In the gym he showed me ten basic exercises. I paid more attention than I ever did in any of my classes. I didn’t want to blow it. I went home that night and started right in.

Weeks passed, and every once in a while Mr. P. would give me a shot and drop me in the hallway, sending my books flying. The other students didn’t know what to think. More weeks passed, and I was steadily adding new weights to the bar. I could sense the power inside my body growing. I could feel it.

Right before Christmas break I was walking to class, and from out of nowhere Mr. Pepperman appeared and gave me a shot in the chest. I laughed and kept going. He said I could look at myself now. I got home and ran to the bathroom and pulled off my shirt. I saw a body, not just the shell that housed my stomach and my heart. My biceps bulged. My chest had definition. I felt strong. It was the first time I can remember having a sense of myself. I had done something and no one could ever take it away. You couldn’t say s–t to me.

It took me years to fully appreciate the value of the lessons I have learned from the Iron. I used to think that it was my adversary, that I was trying to lift that which does not want to be lifted. I was wrong. When the Iron doesn’t want to come off the mat, it’s the kindest thing it can do for you. If it flew up and went through the ceiling, it wouldn’t teach you anything. That’s the way the Iron talks to you. It tells you that the material you work with is that which you will come to resemble. That which you work against will always work against you.

It wasn’t until my late twenties that I learned that by working out I had given myself a great gift. I learned that nothing good comes without work and a certain amount of pain. When I finish a set that leaves me shaking, I know more about myself. When something gets bad, I know it can’t be as bad as that workout.

I used to fight the pain, but recently this became clear to me: pain is not my enemy; it is my call to greatness. But when dealing with the Iron, one must be careful to interpret the pain correctly. Most injuries involving the Iron come from ego. I once spent a few weeks lifting weight that my body wasn’t ready for and spent a few months not picking up anything heavier than a fork. Try to lift what you’re not prepared to and the Iron will teach you a little lesson in restraint and self-control.

I have never met a truly strong person who didn’t have self-respect. I think a lot of inwardly and outwardly directed contempt passes itself off as self-respect: the idea of raising yourself by stepping on someone’s shoulders instead of doing it yourself. When I see guys working out for cosmetic reasons, I see vanity exposing them in the worst way, as cartoon characters, billboards for imbalance and insecurity. Strength reveals itself through character. It is the difference between bouncers who get off strong-arming people and Mr.Pepperman.

Muscle mass does not always equal strength. Strength is kindness and sensitivity. Strength is understanding that your power is both physical and emotional. That it comes from the body and the mind. And the heart.

Yukio Mishima said that he could not entertain the idea of romance if he was not strong. Romance is such a strong and overwhelming passion, a weakened body cannot sustain it for long. I have some of my most romantic thoughts when I am with the Iron. Once I was in love with a woman. I thought about her the most when the pain from a workout was racing through my body.

Everything in me wanted her. So much so that sex was only a fraction of my total desire. It was the single most intense love I have ever felt, but she lived far away and I didn’t see her very often. Working out was a healthy way of dealing with the loneliness. To this day, when I work out I usually listen to ballads.

I prefer to work out alone.

It enables me to concentrate on the lessons that the Iron has for me. Learning about what you’re made of is always time well spent, and I have found no better teacher. The Iron had taught me how to live. Life is capable of driving you out of your mind. The way it all comes down these days, it’s some kind of miracle if you’re not insane. People have become separated from their bodies. They are no longer whole.

I see them move from their offices to their cars and on to their suburban homes. They stress out constantly, they lose sleep, they eat badly. And they behave badly. Their egos run wild; they become motivated by that which will eventually give them a massive stroke. They need the Iron Mind.

Through the years, I have combined meditation, action, and the Iron into a single strength. I believe that when the body is strong, the mind thinks strong thoughts. Time spent away from the Iron makes my mind degenerate. I wallow in a thick depression. My body shuts down my mind.

The Iron is the best antidepressant I have ever found. There is no better way to fight weakness than with strength. Once the mind and body have been awakened to their true potential, it’s impossible to turn back.

The Iron never lies to you. You can walk outside and listen to all kinds of talk, get told that you’re a god or a total bastard. The Iron will always kick you the real deal. The Iron is the great reference point, the all-knowing perspective giver. Always there like a beacon in the pitch black. I have found the Iron to be my greatest friend. It never freaks out on me, never runs. Friends may come and go. But two hundred pounds is always two hundred pounds.

At this second appearing to take the oath of the Presidential office there is less occasion for an extended address than there was at the first. Then a statement somewhat in detail of a course to be pursued seemed fitting and proper. Everything You Wanted To Know About Professional Bodybuilding And Steroids

The Truth

Remember those heated debates you heard as a kid about whether or not pro wrestling was real? Well, when I first started bodybuilding there were people actually arguing about whether or not the pros used steroids and other drugs.

Really.

You can’t blame them (entirely). The magazines at the time never said a word about steroids and the pros of course couldn’t be forthright when someone was brave enough to ask. It was a huge secret… and yet it really wasn’t.

Today things have changed, but I still hear a lot of lies and misconceptions about steroid use in professional, amateur, and “natural” bodybuilding.

Most of this comes from online rumors and internet “gurus” throwing around nonsense. I want to set a few things straight about the real cycles used by pros and top amateurs.

An Inside Peek

First, let’s talk about health. Yes, we care about that. Most of us at least. Perfect diet and supplementation play a huge role in keeping us healthy while on a cycle. If we eat like shit and neglect our health, then we can expect to look like shit on stage.

I usually take time off each year. And I take precautionary measures to make sure my health stays on track. Throughout the year, on and off cycle, I get regular blood work done to make sure my levels are in range.

With private doctors you can pay for any testing without questions being asked. Once you build a relationship with a doctor, you can be very straightforward with him about what you do. Then you can be monitored accordingly throughout the cycles.

Most of the top pros have doctors that are trustworthy. Take into consideration they’ve been doing this for many years. Over time they eventually find a good doctor who understands what they do and works with them, not against them.

I’ve been fortunate enough not to have any serious health issues. When blood tests are taken during a heavy cycle, the liver and kidney values can sometimes come back out of range. But after my PCT and after I drop the orals, everything comes back to normal within a few weeks.

Recipe for Disaster

The only people who I’ve seen suffer from serious health issues are combining steroids with recreational drug use or narcotic painkillers. It’s a recipe for disaster.

Usually if they’re taking juice and being smart about it, they won’t have major issues. Genetic factors may also make them predisposed to certain health issues but this will happen regardless of their steroid use.

I think any steroid – or any other drug for that matter – can put you at risk if it’s abused. That being said, if I had to pick one area that can get competitive bodybuilders into trouble it’s diuretics. When you get close to a professional level show, the body is already in a vulnerable state at that point.

But people take diuretics for years for blood pressure purposes without any issue. If the drugs are being used intelligently then any risk can be avoided. The only problem is when they’re abused and overused before a show.

Insulin is very dangerous if the bodybuilder is uneducated. If you really know what you’re doing, you can use it safely. But if you’re using it for extended amounts of time and not following appropriate protocols you can run into fatal issues.

If you don’t know what you’re doing and you take too much you can actually die, but it’s not the actual drug that’s dangerous – it’s the uneducated use.

Bodybuilders “Dying of Steroid Use”

It does not happen. This is a big misconception and the most moronic thing I’ve ever heard.

The media likes to blow up stories like this and blame steroids immediately, without any kind of investigation into the subject. The people who are writing these stories have no educational background in sport. There has yet to be any kind of proof that the reason for death was purely from steroid use.

Then again, when you look at the government officials who made prohormones illegal, it just goes to show you the kind of idiots who are making the decisions about our lives.

Of course, there are stupid people out there. I knew a bodybuilder taking 36 IU of GH every day, up to 5-6 grams of oils every week, and 100 IU of insulin everyday. Those are crazy amounts – very extreme.

I honestly think the dumbest thing bodybuilders can do is go out on the weekend and abuse recreation drugs while on a cycle. It puts them at a huge risk for health issues.

The Price of Being Juiced

Bodybuilding isn’t exactly a sport people get into if they want to make money. It’s not the NFL unfortunately.

In most cases, a pro bodybuilder could spend more on a competition cycle than he or she can win at the show! I compete in bodybuilding because I love the sport; it’s not for fame or fortune.

As a professional bodybuilder, I’ve spent $20,000 for 16 weeks. This was my most expensive cycle and it was mostly due to the GH for this particular run.

Somewhere in the range of $8,000 to $15,000 would be more typical for someone at my level. It all depends on the price of GH. I get mine from the pharmacy so it’s always pricey.

A Pro Bodybuilder’s Cycle

So what do top bodybuilder’s use and how much? I’ll tell you.

Just keep in mind that this is not a “how to” or a prescription, just an honest look at what’s really being used by pros. An actual cycle is very individual and should be changed according to individual needs.

16-Week Cycle: General Usage

  1. Cut long esters at 6-8 weeks out and switch to short-acting compounds.
  2. Increase anti-estrogens as the show get closer in order to get harder and dryer. This is where a lot of people fail because of lack of knowledge on the subject.
  3. Testosterone should be cut anywhere between 2-4 weeks out. Some people can get away with going all the way to the show but it really depends on the person. If they’re going for a very hard and dry look, then likely they’ll cut it earlier.
  4. Make sure supplementation is on target during the cycle to protect your health. I use liver support supplements, Flameout, Curcumin, etc.
  5. Simplicity is the key; a cycle doesn’t need to be fancy. If a bodybuilder is not advanced or experienced – and most who think they are actually aren’t! – he should go with a lower dosage.

16-Week Sample Cycle: Moderate to High Dosage

This is an example of a common pro-bodybuilder cycle. It’s something I’ve done before and I do not recommend this for anyone!

1-10 Testosterone Enanthate, 750mg a week (1000-1200mg advanced)
1-10 EQ, 800mg a week (1000mg advanced)
1-10 Tren E, 600mg/week (800mg advanced)
1-8  D-Bol, 50mg every day (up to 100mg advanced)
10-16 100mg Testosterone prop EOD (100mg ED advanced)
10-16 100mg Trenbolone Acetate EOD (75-100mg ED advanced)
10-16 100mg Masteron propionate EOD (100mg ED advanced)
10-16 50mg Winstrol or Anavar ED (sometime I do both)
8-16 Start T3 at 25mcg ED and taper up as needed.
12-16 Halotestin, start at 20mg ED and increase by 10mg every week (not a good choice for those who aren’t mentally strong.)

Pharmaceutical GH 6-12 IU ED for the whole cycle (If people can afford more then the sky is the limit. I know guys who’ve gone up to 30 IU but this is rare.)

Insulin For advanced lifters only! 5-10 IU pre-workout followed by drinking Plazma™ right away. This is a moderate dosage, a lot of guys are using much more.

When to cut insulin is very individual and depends on conditioning, water retention and the amount of carbs the bodybuilder is eating. It could be run straight through or cut out in the weeks prior to the show and possibly reintroduced later on.

Clenbuterol is on option starting at 6-8 weeks out. Most start low, 20-40mcg.

Anti-Estrogens

Nolvadex (Tamoxifen): 20mg ED for the whole cycle, taper up if needed starting at 6 weeks out.

Arimidex for the whole cycle starting at 1mg EOD and taper up as needed from 6 weeks out.

Provironstarting at 8 weeks out at 25mg ED and taper up as the show gets closer, up to 100mg ED.

Note: This doesn’t cover the last week. The peak week is very complicated and not easily generalized so I didn’t include it.

Anyone doing a cycle like this is very advanced and knows that the final week will change from show to show. There’s no set plan for it. If someone gives you a set plan for your last week without looking you over and making changes based on how you look, he’s an idiot.

Think about this for a moment: Why would you ever choose to be with someone who is not excited to be with you?

There’s a grey area in dating many people get hung up on — a grey area where feelings are ambiguous or one person has stronger feelings than the other. This grey area causes real, tangible issues. As a man, a huge question is often whether to be persistent and continue pursuing a woman even when she seems lukewarm or hot/cold on your advances. For women, a common question is what to do with men who make their feelings ambiguous.

“She said she’s not interested, but she still flirts with me, so what do I need to do to get her?”
“Well, I know she likes me, but she didn’t call me back last weekend, what should I do?”
“He treats me well when he’s around, but he’s hardly around. What does that mean?”

Most dating advice exists to “solve” this grey area for people. Say this line. Text her this. Call him this many times. Wear that.

Much of it gets exceedingly analytical, to the point where some men and women actually spend more time analyzing behaviors than actually, you know, behaving.

Frustration with this grey area also drives many people to unnecessary manipulation, drama and game-playing. This is where you get rules about making men pay for this many dates before you can become intimate. Or how men need to transition from attraction phase to comfort phase by qualifying three times before they’re allowed to commence an escalation ladder.

These things may seem clever and exciting to some people who are stuck or frustrated. But this dating advice misses the point. If you’re in the grey area to begin with, you’ve already lost.

Let me ask again: Why would you ever be excited to be with someone who is not excited to be with you? If they’re not happy with you now, what makes you think they’ll be happy to be with you later? Why do you make an effort to convince someone to date you when they make no effort to convince you?

What does that say about you? That you believe you need to convince people to be with you?

How The American Jet Fighter Cockpit Has Evolved Through Time

The 100 year history of airplanes has seen a lot of improvements in the field of mechanical engineering. One aspect that has changed the most is the cockpit itself, especially that of jet fighters. Early models were efficient for the era, but nowhere near the engineering marvels that are the centerpieces of today’s mighty aircraft. Here’s at look at the cockpit’s evolution from 1945 to the modern day…

 

Lockheed P-80A Shooting Star (1945)

The first jet fighter to go into service with the United States, this first generation jet fighter took lessons learned from fighter planes in WW2 and incorporated them into a basic cockpit design.

 

 

North American F-100D Super Sabre (1956)

This second generation jet fighter, the first USAF fighter capable of supersonic level flight, was primarily armed with guns. It was one of the first fighters to be outfitted with air to air missiles and became outfitted with systems to give the pilot notice when a missile was locked on.

 

 

Vought F-8 Crusader (1958)

The last American fighter built with guns as its primary weapon, we begin to see third generation characteristics incorporated including the outfitting of fighters with radar and the corresponding radar scope.

 

 

Convair F-106 Delta Dart (1959)

The futuristic supersonic interceptor featured many new innovations for a fighter jet. Including the radar probe in the cockpit, there were new avionics available for it such as ground-controlled autopilot and a Tactical Situation Display (TSD) map for the pilot.

 

 

McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II (1964)

The classic third-generation fighter, used by the Air Force, Navy, and Marines, had two crewmembers. The backseater, the Radar Intercept Officer (RIO), managed the new and advanced radar system. Designed to carry only missiles as its armament, later versions incorporated a gun form lessons learned in Vietnam. The F-4 is still in service with various countries around the world, and is one of the most produced fighter jets of all time.

 

 

Vought A-7D Corsair II (1973)

The light attack aircraft based on the F-8 Crusader was one of the first combat aircraft to feature a Heads up Display (HUD), Inertial Navigation System (INS), and turbofan engine. Note the addition of radar scopes and various avionics advances for the single-seat attack aircraft.

 

Grumman F-14A Tomcat (1974)

One of the first fourth-generation fighter jets to come into service, the F-14A was similar to the F-4 in that it required two crewmembers, with the backseater being the Radar Intercept Officer in charge of the plane’s advanced radar system. Increasingly, flight instrumentation would be moved to the aircraft’s Heads Up Display (HUD).

 

 

McDonnell Douglas F-15A Eagle (1976)

The famous fourth-generation air superiority fighter still primarily relied upon analog instruments, but that was changing as you can see it to start incorporating more digital systems for the pilot. The radar system was quite advanced for the day, especially for a single-seat fighter jet.

 

 

General Dynamics F-16A Fighting Falcon (1982)

The F-16A Fighting Falcon, known by pilots as the Viper, was designed in the 70s and incorporated many revolutionary features. The control stick was moved from the center to the right side of the cockpit. The seat was reclined 30 degrees to help the pilot sustain high G forces. The plane was the first to use fly-by-wire in an operational military aircraft. Most notably, the cockpit begins to use the digital “glass” cockpit configuration in which analog instruments get replaced with large multi-function screens that provide flight instrumentation and other operational information.

 

 

McDonnell Douglas F-15C Eagle (1985)

The upgrades to the F-15 resulted in the F-15C variant, which includes more advanced avionics and a move towards more digital glass cockpit instrumentation for the pilot.

 

McDonnell Douglass F/A-18C Hornet (1987)

The move to digital flight instrumentation is clear with the F/A-18C Hornet. The light strike fighter’s multi-function displays (MFDs) allow the pilot to switch the screens between different systems in the plane and allow it to drop increasingly sophisticated ordnance in both air-to-air and air-to-ground engagements.

 

McDonnell Douglass F-15E Strike Eagle (1988)

The difference in cockpits between the F-15E Strike Eagle, an all-weather interdictor for the Air Force, and the older F-15A and F-15C Eagle air superiority fighters is obvious.

 

Grumman F-14D Super Tomcat (1991)

The F-14D Super Tomcat was designed to bring the F-14 Tomcat into the digital era, and included new digital MFDs for the pilot and RIO.

 

General Dynamics F-16C Fighting Falcon (1991)

The move towards glass cockpits is readily apparent with the F-16C version of the Viper.

 

Boeing F/A-18E Super Hornet (1999)

The Super Hornet uses its HUD as its primary flight instrument with the other MFDs in place to monitor and run the numerous features and weapons systems on the plane.

 

Lockheed Martin F-22A Raptor (2007)

Designed in the late 80s and first flown in the 90s, the F-22A Raptor is the world’s first and currently only operational fifth-generation fighter. The move to the digital age is obvious with the entire cockpit now utilizing big digital displays. Note that this is a pic of the cockpit trainer of the F-22, as actual cockpit pictures of the F-22 are understandably hard to find.

 

Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II (2015)

The JSF features the most revolutionary cockpit design yet, with a giant multi-function touch screen display. Notice the lack of a HUD – the pilot’s helmet now projects flight information to the pilot no matter which direction the pilot looks.

What is your role in the sex trade?

Basically I help women, friends of mine, find paying customers. It’s a form of service and at the end of the day we all get paid.

So do you consider yourself a pimp?

That’s the word for it.

What is the difference between the role you play and the role a woman would play in a similar position, perhaps, for example, a woman running a brothel?

I have no clue. I have never been to a brothel and I don’t know if we have them here in [my city]. Maybe more organized. Got a more secure operation. Not much difference.

How many girls do you work with?

How many girls at one time? Five-six girls… right now I’m out of the game. I am finished with it.

How do you choose who you want to work with?

Everyone I work with I knew growing up, in [my city].  Most of the girls I work with I knew. When I first started with this… friends of mine knew this guy that wanted a bachelor party or wanted a stripper at a party. I knew a couple of girls… and, you know, these days are hard, you know, some have babies, no education, no high school no nothing like that. Money is hard to come by around here.  I said “look, I got a way you could make some money tonight, 2 or 3 hundred dollars plus some tips.” The first girl I go to says: “No, I ain’t doing that.” Second girl I go to says: “No, that ain’t for me.”  Third girl: “I ain’t doing that.” Fourth girl she got a baby and she got no food in the fridge, she is looking alright, you know what I am saying, she was down, made it happen. And that is how it started.

How I got into pimping was the same as one of these parties. One of the guys is like “How much to fuck a girl?” So, anyhow , I just pull out a number and say 400, 500 dollars  and he’s like “cool.” I run into the girl and she says $600 and she will do it. Go to the guy and he says $600. That’s how I really got into it. Like I say… prostitution. 

Do you have a contract with your workers?

Ah, I don’t know it if is a contract but there is an understanding and there is a way that you sort of make them dependent on you. There is a trick to this game. Long-term girls I had, they happen to be girls, most of them, with a little drug problem. If you are able to use that habit against them, able to manipulate them, able make them dependent, never give them too much money. Because the minute someone don’t need you for something is the minute you aren’t going to see somebody again.

So you keep their money?

I get the money at the end of the night. I put groceries in the fridge, I might throw them a little bill or two at the end of the month. Half of the light bill or something like that. Because the minute they start saving money, collecting money, they’re gone. Forget about it.

So they are not allowed to collect and take their own money?

They maybe have some money of their own and I don’t know how to get it, you know what I mean, but you’ve got your ways to make sure you got your money.

What services do you provide them with and what do you expect in return?

The girls?  Services I provide them with? Well basically protection. Also able to hook up jobs, especially around casinos and hotels, concierges and security at the casino, concierges at the hotels. The casino right down the road here… You could go there any day of the week and night of the week, throw a couple of tips on the table and guarantee them, talk to them and guarantee them everything I’ve got. You see a nice woman come around and ask you how your night is going and that’s how it starts. Right now today, any day, you go down there specifically at night, more so on the weekend, there are women in that casino working.

How do you enforce your contracts? Specifically, what are your options if the contract is breached?

You mean with the women? I ain’t killed nobody, you know. Some places, some other guys where the dude actually… the woman dies when they sort of move onto the next guy. You know. Now [my city]… no one is killing and robbing because I know these girls. Now when I finish with a girl, you know, basically there isn’t much I can do. So that is the point to make her more dependent on you. When the moment comes that she no longer needs you, that’s it.

Now if she shows up without my money, and this is the hardest part… the part that bothers me sometimes. This is what I got to deal with sometimes. You know I grew up with my mom and my sister. At the time I wasn’t really concerned about it but there was a time when you needed to rough up a girl here and there.  You know, if you are thinking a girl is going to be make five-six-seven hundred dollars in a night and bring you something back “just cuz” then you are just joking, this game ain’t for you.

Do your girls work inside or outside?

You mean on the street or in hotels or something like whatever? Both. Now my top girls, I had most of them, you could say worked inside. They worked hotels or I put ads on Kijiji or Craig’s List. I get calls. They work like that. Now maybe, the time, I might have had two or three girls running the street.  When I started off most of the girls were outside. When I first started, the first couple of months, it was basically Craig’s List or Kijiji, stuff that was going on at these bachelors’ parties or hotel parties or whatever they were. And at the end of the night I get my cut. And maybe I would give her a little piece, if I were feeling that way, you know.

How do you go about finding “dates” for your workers?

Well, you know, these kinds of thing work themselves out. I put a girl in the [street], Friday or Saturday night and she can get some work. I put a girl in the casino and she can get some work.  I put her out on Craig’s List and she can get some work. Ain’t  so much me finding the customers but the customers finding me or customers finding the girls.

So you don’t really get involved in finding customers?

No, I don’t want to know these guys, I don’t want these guys to know me. I had plans. plans to work in the city, and what not. I had a plan and I am not your average jack-ass. You know. I didn’t want to be known as this guy. I ain’t driving no pink Cadillac… wearing no mink coat. It ain’t that kind of thing. I was more behind the scenes. In the dark and out of the way. I was just in it for the money.

What are your prices in general for specific services?

A fine white girl, for her, maybe she works at the casino, once again at bachelor parties, she worked at [a strip club] at one period. Her … a guy is paying her $500, paying me, $500, $600 maybe $700 at the top end, that’s for one hour. Don’t ever go the hour.

Now the girls running the streets they more,  I don’t know how to say this, but they ain’t really dime pieces so a guy is just trying to get in a little blowjob, a little hand job in his car. She might say $50, $100 … whatever the guy is prepared to pay for x amount of service. What ever she is prepared to do for x amount of money. They figure it out, but I don’t care because at the end of the night I need that girl to give me three-four-five hundred dollars, whatever it is.  If she wants to charge $10 I don’t care, she just got to get the numbers right.

Do your prices vary by race, or other characteristic, of the client?

The only colour I care about is the colour green. I don’t see the client, I don’t care as long as I see my money at the end of the night. On a slow night I want $300, and that’s being easy on the girl, I mean she is making $300 an hour, two hours, three hours. That’s being easy on the girl.

What is your income from this profession?

When I was in it? Real talk. I can make 15 to 20 grand a month. Real talk. That’s a good month. A bad month 10 grand maybe and that’s because I had to take care of certain expenses. Easy.

Do the clients pay you directly, or the girls?

No the girls. I don’t care what the girls do to get their money… She could rob a bank, I don’t care. But at the end of the night I want my money. So they pay her, she pays me.

So you never see the clients?

Never. Now I might hang around the casino and watch them work so I know how many guys they left the casino with, right? I might hang around a certain street, I keep watching the girl, I keep circling and every time I don’t see the girl then I know she is… So I sorta use that as a way of measuring the quota. The only time I see the guy is a bachelor party. Maybe I hook something up for a guy. Maybe that is the only time someone is going to know who I am and what I am doing.

Does one of your workers have the right to refuse a job?

Of course. She can refuse. If the guy looks like a killer or rapist and she is getting in his car or going to his hotel room then yeah.

Do your workers have other forms of employment? Do you know how much they make in those jobs?

These are a bunch of dummies I am dealing with. I mean, not to be rude, but what are they going to do? Wouldn’t say they are dummies, but this is not a profession where girls are doing this because they want to—they are doing it because they have to. They can’t get a job at McDonald’s. 

Sex workers get paid more than other workers with similar skill levels, how would you explain that difference in pay?

Well, what they are selling. A girl got the same skill level as a girl working at McDonald’s, working at Burger King, or Tim Horton’s, or whatever, but how much you going to pay for a cup of coffee? How much you going to pay for a burger? How much you going to pay for a piece of pussy?

What are the risks you face?

At the time my biggest fear, the thing I was most paranoid about, was being robbed. Though I kept things on the low down, there were people who knew what I had to do. I sort of had partners at the time. Now people talk and if people know that you’re getting 10 thousand, 15 thousand, 20 thousand a month, they might be tempted to come after you. They are going to want your money more than you want your money. So I did keep a gun at my house and I did carry a firearm with me when I went to situations where it might be a little dangerous. And maybe as a form of intimidation to the girls sometimes, but never in my mind would I actually use that.

Do you enforce the use of condoms with your workers?

Yes. Definitely. I try to tell them to be safe. They call that the “girlfriend experience.” I guess there is a market for it, but the girls that I am working with no. They are trying to get paid. They aren’t trying to die.

Excerpt from a private journal entry: 

I remember the simultaneous high and pain of being hungry and light-headed. One can of diet Pepsi, one loaf of bread on my better days.  Peruse obsessively through foodie magazines, as if looking was eating—without the calories.  Whenever my mother left the house to go shop or run an errand, I ran to my closet, dug out my backpack, filled it with gallons of spring water, and—when the pack was full—grasped the handle of a gallon in each hand and ran or lifted.  I biked. I took 2 hour aerobic classes and returned home for 2 more hours of surreptitious stair-climbing as my parents watched television downstairs.  I got up in the middle of the night to pace the bedroom or stand on tiptoe. I sat on the edge of the seat—determined not to relax and let my fat recline and absorb into my body.  Before I knew it, the only thing I was doing in my life was starving and exercising.  

But what I remember most is the “voice” in my head.   I found out later many eating disorder patients experience a halving of their mental state, a “voice” disassociated from the rest of them: an eating disorder “voice”—the friend, the aggressor, the doer, the one trying to help you be continually better—who later turns against you.  The “voice” began nicely enough—with whispers of running just one more mile or shaving down just a few hundred more calories.  My starvation fed the “voice”: As I listened, it grew bigger and meaner.  [Caroline Zelonka is absolutely right about the ‘constant pounding.’  In my case, the pounding came from this inside ] And there came a point when this whole thinness quest was no longer a “high” point or a gateway to control; it was simply controlling me. There came a point when I cringed against that “voice” because I was tired now.  But I never thought once about resisting, the same way you wouldn’t resist to the demands of someone with a gun to your temple.  I might have felt caged but it was better than saying no, letting go, and falling over a precipice to the unknown and to fat-dom.  I could not imagine anything but death if I stopped listening.  Death was being fat, obscure, and silenced again.  Death was guilt so big I would end up killing myself.  So, there was no other way, really.  

I was seventy pounds at five feet three inches the first time I was hospitalized, and under sixty pounds the second time I was hospitalized.  People cringe and shudder when they hear the numbers.  The truth is, if you asked me how sickly and thin I must have looked back then, I couldn’t tell you.  Before I stepped into the shower, I would turn and peer back at two darkened grooves on the center of each buttock.  In hindsight those grooves were probably the bruising of poorly cushioned bones, although a friend recently told me with utmost authority that we do not have butt bones.  But that’s all I remember of how skinny I was.  I looked in the reflection obsessively, but, in my eating-disorder mind, I always saw a normal-sized girl. And, obviously, normal was not okay.  Normal was mediocre; normal was just as bad as fat.  Normal was not the best.  Why bother being anything but the best especially if I was used to being the “best”?  All-or-nothing.  And, so, I actually wanted to look like a poster-child from the starving Middle East or Africa’s.  I fantasized about dropping down to thirty pounds.  But, if thirty pounds was possible, why not fifteen?  I think my final weight-goal was to weigh fifteen pounds.

Like many of the other respondents here, I could go on and on.  The condition ‘eating disorder’ understates so many things about the disorder.  It takes over and takes away everything.  So, I’ll leave it at snapshots:

Hospitalization– being watched in our big ‘glass bowl’ sitting room, monitored via camera feeds in our room– was heaven in a way I couldn’t outwardly admit.  Physical prisons are the Maldives resort escape to your inner prisons.  Your inside warden is still there but, at least, it’s not just you and that warden. It’s you, the warden, and the buffer– the army of nurses and hospital monitors and other watchful eyes that somewhat ‘absolve’ you of your guilt in not feeding the voice.  I remember fearing the day I’d be released.  I never wanted that day to come.

You can complain and wheedle about having to put that pat of butter on your toast, or downing that can of Ensure, but there’s a guilty thrill juxtaposed with horror knowing that you don’t have a choice.  

My lips would turn blue with cold by mid morning on a summer’s day because of malnutrition.

My parents told me later they would creep into my room, lift up the covers to check if I was still breathing.  (Various doctors had told them to prepare for the worse– projecting I wouldn’t survive past a year.)

The voice of an eating disordered mind is like that of an abusive boyfriend. You are that cowering shell of a person you once used to be– who believes he is everything to you and that he loves you and you need him in spite of everything he’s done, and you wouldn’t know how to go on or be ‘yourself’ without him.  Recovery from the eating disorder and recovery of your real self is painful, and it takes a long time to feel like you aren’t abjuring some pure, higher-order ideal, that you aren’t being traitorous; you aren’t selling out. You’ll feel all of those things for such a long while and you’ll feel like you are losing your identity. You’ll even feel empty.  You’ll feel like it the whole world had it wrong and should have just let you be.  You’ll feel like gold turning to rusted copper.

An eating disorder is a full-on assault on all battle-fields– the cognitive, the neural, the physical, the emotional, the social.  It is so all-encompassing, nasty, and seductive.  It’s not a neat war-front of parties on opposing sides like it is with you against cancer.  When you are losing you feel like you are winning, and when you are winning you feel like you are losing.
