The handwriting on a Russian medical prescription

Man after receiving 40 Sieverts of radiation.. More than 1 Sievert of radiation will make you sick and may kill you, more than 3 will almost surely kill you.

A Japanese Worker, Hiroshi Ouchi, after being exposed to 17 Sieverts of Radiation. He was exposed to so much radiation his Chromosomes were completely destroyed, but was kept alive for 3 months against his will

At first, Ouchi came into the hospital with just some puffy redness to his skin. Ouchi’s chromosomes had been hit by a direct blast of radiation and were a jumbled mess. Without this vital blueprint, his cells would no longer be able to regenerate. The first real problem doctors noticed was a drastic decrease in white blood cells. Day 6, he was placed into a sterile (bubble) room. The doctors determined that the only way to improve Ouchi’s condition would be to give him a transplant of cells that would generate white blood cells. Day 7, Ouchi receives a transplant from his sister (a match). The doctor would meet with the family every day to candidly discuss his condition. Signs of radiation sickness were beginning to show up on the surface of Ouchi’s body. A nurse recalls how at first, they were able to use tape on his body, but soon when they’d go to remove the tape, skin would come off with it. Ultimately, there was nowhere left where tape could be used. When his skin started to slough off from the top down, no new cells could be formed to repair the skin. His breathing started to get erratic. (At this point, they show a nurse’s written record of Ouchi and he’s saying, “No more” “I’m going home” “Please stop” “Mom”) Day 11, to help him breathe, Ouchi is hooked up to a ventilator. This meant he’d no longer be able to speak to his family. The family (wife, son, parents, and siblings) visited him every day.

Day 18, the transfusion from his sister seems to have worked, and Ouchi’s white blood cell count returns to healthy levels. A week later, abnormalities are found in his blood. It seemed that the radiation in Ouchi’s body had damaged the chromosomes in the cells that he received from his sister. Day 27, problems beyond the skin and blood: (They show video of his intestines. The membranes are deteriorating.) He begins experiencing excessive diarrhea. 3 weeks after the diarrhea starts, the intestines start to hemorrhage (another video of his intestines, this time with blood.) He was given lots of blood transfusions, as many as 10 times in 12 hours. To help his circulation and put less pressure on his skin, Ouchi is moved to a special rotating bed. The places where he’d lost skin were seeping blood and fluids. He had to be wrapped almost completely in gauze. A nurse recalls how there was so much fluid leaking that it’d take half a day just to deal with the gauze, and how painful it must have been for Ouchi, although they gave him lots of medicine to sleep. His wife recalls how he bled out of his eyes, as if he was crying blood. He was losing 10 liters of fluid a day through his skin and intestines.

In order to curb the loss of fluid through the skin, doctors began daily skin transplants with special “bio skin.” (At this point, his skin was pretty much gone.) Unfortunately, the bio skin wouldn’t adhere to his body. A doctor explains that all the doctors probably knew that Ouchi’s chances of survival were low, but nobody dared say so out loud. Vocalizing any doubt could have led everyone to start questioning what they were doing and for who. A visibly traumatized nurse recounts how Ouchi continued to deteriorate and was hooked up to a machine, and in her losing battle to keep him alive, she wondered, “What am I doing this for?” She had to remind herself that she was doing it for Ouchi. 2 months after the accident, as Ouchi goes through a continuous process of hemorrhaging and blood transfusions, his heart continues to work hard to pump blood through his body, averaging over 120 beats per minute. The strain on his heart is similar to someone who is running a marathon. Day 59, suddenly, Ouchi’s heart stops. As the medical staff works to revive him, his heart starts and stops three times. After an hour, Ouchi’s heart begins beating on its own again. The traumatized nurse recounts that she was relieved when his heart started beating again, “but…” (implying conflicted feelings.) Having his heart stop for an hour affected his brain, kidneys, etc. and his condition quickly declined. His body was essentially being kept alive by machines and medicine.

The head doctor admits to debating whether or not to continue treating Ouchi, but says that the family didn’t want to give up hope until the very end, and that kept the doctors going. The family was still visiting Ouchi and encouraging him to fight on. Day 65, more problems with the blood. (I don’t understand the explanation exactly, but his white blood cells were being attacked and decreasing in numbers again.) Day 81, the head doctor sits down with the family and suggests that if Ouchi’s heart stops again, they should let him go. The next day, the wife visits Ouchi and expresses her desire for him to survive through the new year. Day 83, the young son visits and encourages his father to keep fighting. That night, Ouchi died. They show pictures of his muscle tissue and explain that all of his muscles were destroyed except for one: his heart.

This Roller Coaster Will Literally Kill You (article)

Here’s how the world’s oddest suicide method would work: First the rider would face a long, slow climb up to more than 500 meters, giving him or her a few minutes to think back on life and contemplate the decision. At the top, there would be time to say a prayer or blow a kiss to relatives (or bail) before pressing the “fall” button and plummeting into the long steep plunge followed by the first 360-degree loop. That’s where most riders would die. According to Urbonas, traveling at 100 meters per second, the person would experience a G-force-induced loss of consciousness due to cerebral hypoxia (lack of oxygen reaching the brain), which often causes a sense of euphoria. Just in case that first one didn’t do it, six more consecutive loops would finish the job. Building the structure would be a challenge. The Euthanasia Coaster would be more than three times the height of the world’s tallest roller coaster, the Kingda Ka, which took 18 months and $25 million to construct.

The largest land vehicle ever built: Bagger 293 in Germany

Deemed the largest land vehicle in history by the Guinness Book of World Records, the Bagger 293 is the single best digging machine man has ever built.

Built in 1995, this bucket wheel excavator is 315 feet tall—dwarfing the Statue of Liberty—738 feet wide and weighs more than 31 million pounds or 15,500 tons. Given all of that size, you’d think it takes a huge crew to run one. But you’d be wrong. Two people run the show.

Its buzz saw-like 70-foot rotating wheel consists of a series of 20 buckets that easily and constantly slice into the earth’s surface, efficiently removing thousands upon thousands of pounds of overburden, the waste soil mining operations need to remove before getting to the coal below.

Once the dirt has been scooped up, it’s transported by the conveyor belt running along the machine’s massive arm to the much smaller dump trucks below that will carry it off.

The Bagger 293 is the largest machine of its kind but has several smaller siblings. The bucket wheel excavator has been around since the 1920s. You can watch two videos of the 293 in action below.

The World’s Last Male White Rhino Placed Under 24-Hour Armed Guard In Kenya

$

Out in the vast wilds of Kenya’s southern savanna, the singular remnant of a once wide-ranging subspecies of rhinoceros stands precariously close to the edge of extinction. The Northern White Rhino, which once ranged over much of the central and eastern regions of the African continent, is staring down the barrel of a gun – literally.

Only a single male by the name of Sudan is left in the wild. Luckily, he doesn’t stand alone.

Rangers from the Ol Pejeta Conservancy guard Sudan 24/7 in an desperate effort to protect him from harm.

The conservancy is a 90,000-acre piece of land where the rangers work together with local law enforcement to defend the animals that call it home.

The population of the Northern White Rhino, like all wild rhino species, has been devastated by the black market for their horns. A horn like Sudan’s can fetch up to $75,000 per kilogram.

There are 5 remaining female northern white rhinos in the wild, but Sudan is the only male left – and so the future of the species depends on his survival.

Poachers are well armed, and so the rangers have to be, too.

Although Sudan is not the only animal that calls the conservancy home, he is the most at risk.

To aid in his protection, rangers utilize GPS, surveillance aircraft, and even dogs who are trained to detect security breeches.

Despite the odds, scientists still hope they can bring the species back from the brink of extinction.

They are considering breeding the females with similar subspecies of rhinos, and then breeding that generation back into more pure northern white rhinos.

As it stands, Sudan’s life hangs delicately on the edge. This makes the work of the rangers that guard him all the more essential.

Source: Mashable

It is truly heartbreaking to think of how far humanity has pushed these amazing animals, but it is encouraging to know that there are still those who are dedicated to their survival.

For more information on Sudan’s protection and care, visit the Ol Pejeta Conservancy Facebook page and website, and please share Sudan’s story with others below.

I was talking with a friend the other day who told me about a struggle he was having in his relationship with his girlfriend. He’s been dating her about a year and really likes her a lot. He would like to see things work out between them, but he was feeling some anxiety about bringing up a subject that seemed to be hanging over the relationship.

As we spoke, I mentioned that nothing would change in his relationship, and perhaps in his life in general, until he stepped up and dealt with the issue that was stressing him. He knew what I was saying was true, but it caused him a lot of anxiety to broach the subject and have a conversation. He feared that bringing up the issue might really hurt his girlfriend and even possibly end their relationship.

I just received an email from my friend thanking me for my advice and stating that he and his girlfriend just had the deepest conversation they had ever had. He faced his sticking point and gave his relationship a chance to move forward. At the same time, by facing his fears in this way, he also removed a glass ceiling that would have prevented him from moving ahead in life in general.

This is how life works. We continuously bump into various sticking points that cause us frustration, anxiety, fear, guilt, etc. Until we step up and consciously deal with them, nothing ever changes.

No matter what our sticking points are, we can’t rise any higher in life until we clear those hurdles. Period.

It doesn’t matter if your sticking point is an addiction, an unresolved relationship issue, deprivation thinking, financial irresponsibility, a family issue, or fear in general, you can only rise as high as that particular glass ceiling will permit.

Here’s the clincher: avoiding one particular issue – getting stuck, or spinning your wheels doing the same ineffective thing over and over – will have a generalized effect on every other area of your life. For example, failing to deal with an addiction to online porn will limit your relationships, your career, and your financial well-being. You can only rise as high in life and your current glass ceiling will allow.

Here’s the other clincher: life is filled with these sticking points. You will keep bumping into them until the day you die. The freedom that comes from successfully challenging a sticking point in your life will eventually lead to a new glass ceiling caused by a new sticking point.
It never ends.

This may sound kind of gloomy, but it really isn’t. Every time you successfully challenge one sticking point, you add new tools to your toolbox that will come in handy in dealing with the next. Just as importantly, you also gain the self-confidence that comes from knowing that you’ve handled difficult issues in the past and that you can handle whatever life brings you in the future. This is what they call “The School of Hard Knocks.”….

A Few Tips, Tricks And Hacks That Will Make Your Life A Whole Lot Easier

Try and spend time with the elderly if possible. A little conversation with a lonely old neighbor every now and then can really brighten their life

Most people talk with the elderly as a kind of charity to their elders. I see it when people talk with my grandma. There is this fake excitement to have a conversation with her. The conversation is always “how was that chicken you just ate pretty tasty huh” “the weather is nice today”. I know a lot of people that are creeped out by old people and distance themselves. There also those that don’t see what they can get out of time with an old person. I hate when people talk to elderly like children. What they never talk about with her is how when my grandma was 20 she was a roller waitress in San Diego. She used to have to drive around the south of the bay to get to Coronado island because they hadn’t built a bridge yet. She use to go out there with her friends to make campfires and lounge on the beach. She absolutely lights up talking about that and it really is interesting to imagine my grandma as a young woman exploring the world of the 1940s and 50s. Every old man I meet can tell me war stories about his life as a young bachelor. They are people so don’t treat the act of talking to them like a chore to make grandma feel better. Every elderly person is a time machine that most people don’t even give a shit about.

Tell your parents/grandparents to call your phone number immediately if they ever get a call saying that you need money

Scammers will call older people and try to make it sound like their son/daughter is in trouble and they need some amount of money wired to a weird address. By having them call your phone number if they ever get a call like this, it will prevent them from losing money or having their identity stolen

When you are visiting a friend who is unemployed, don’t ask him how the job search is going. Let them bring it up first if they need to do so.

Your friend has been dealing with the stress of looking for work all day long, isolated, ruminating over what could happen, feeling self doubts. Having you come over is a mental health break from all that, a welcome distraction. Don’t harsh that by asking this common questions and getting his mind back on that track again.

In order to be a better conversationalist, don’t ask yes/no questions. Instead, ask open ended questions that require a more thoughtful, in-depth response

I’ve always liked ” tell me about your day” vs ” how was your day”. I always get a better answer than the normal “good” or whatever.

Always let a dog sniff your fist first before trying to pet him, then scratch under the chin and on the sides. Never reach or stand over a dog. Reaching over top a dog’s head can be threatening.

50% of a job is just being friendly to the right people

A ‘C+’ worker becomes an ‘A-‘ with the right attitude. Honestly, in many jobs you could practically skate by just being a delight to your co-workers.

If someone calls your phone looking for someone you know, don’t give out the persons info. Instead, take a name and number and give it to the person you know

If you get a call from someone looking for a friend/family member or their information, even if you don’t get a name and number of the caller tell your friend someone called trying to find them.

Just because you didn’t give the caller the info does not mean someone else didn’t give the caller the information. If it’s a stalker/abuser etc. trying to find your friend or family member then they won’t stop at you. Give your friend/family member a heads up! It might prepare them for or save them from a dangerous encounter.

When visiting elderly relatives ask them if they’ve met any new and/or exciting people recently, it could prevent them from being scammed

Everyone knows scammers online prey on unsuspecting people targeting lonely and gullible people. Commonly elderly people get targeted most. Asking them about new people can reveal if they meet new people overseas who the family may not know. It may not stop an initial scam but it can prevent future ones.

Learn how to convince people by asking questions, not by contradicting or arguing with what they say. You will have much more success and seem much more pleasant

I’s about guiding them to the answer. It’s the difference in showing someone how to fix a bike, and walking them through fixing their bike. They’ll be more interested, and will come out with a better understanding. If you know they’re wrong, don’t tell them they’re wrong; ask questions that will make them rethink their point and realize they’re wrong.

Learn exactly how much you can drink without loosing your temper, your wallet or your erection. Learn this as quickly as possible

Don’t put your life on hold waiting for closure on something you’re struggling with. Many of life’s most difficult situations don’t have reasonable explanations.

“You can spend minutes, hours, days, weeks, or even months over-analyzing a situation; trying to put the pieces together, justifying what could’ve, would’ve happened… or you can just leave the pieces on the floor and move the fuck on.” – Tupac Shakur

Do an online search for which restaurants give out free birthday meals. When your birthday rolls around, your email will be full of coupons for free meals that don’t expire for about a month.

Faiz, 40, and Ghulam, 11, Afghanistan. Ghulam and Faiz sit for a portrait in her home before their wedding in Afghanistan. According to the U.S. Department of State report “Human Rights Practices for 2011,” approximately 60 percent of girls were married younger than the legal age of 16. Once the girl’s father has agreed to the engagement, she is pulled out of school immediately.

Tehani, 8, Yemen. “Whenever I saw him, I hid. I hated to see him,” Tehani (in pink) recalls of the early days of her marriage to Majed, when she was 6 and he was 25. The young wife posed for a portrait with former classmate Ghada, also a child bride, outside their home in Hajjah.

Destaye, 11, and Addisu, 23, Ethiopia. Addisu and his new bride Destaye are married in a traditional Ethiopian Orthodox wedding in the rural areas outside the city of Gondar, Ethiopia. Community members said that because of his standing as a priest, Addisu’s bride had to be a virgin. This was the reason Destaye was given to him at such a young age.

Rajani, 5, India. Long after midnight, Rajani is roused from sleep and carried by her uncle to her wedding. Child marriage is illegal in India, so ceremonies are often held in the wee hours of the morning. It becomes a secret the whole village keeps, explained one farmer.

Bishal, 15, and Surita, 16, Nepal. Bishal accepts gifts from visitors as his new bride, Surita, sits bored at her new home. Here in Nepal, as in many countries, not only girls, but boys too are married young.

Sarita, 15, India. Sarita is seen in tears before she is sent to her new home with her new groom. The previous day, she and her 8-year-old sister Maya were married to sibling brothers.

Leyualem is transported by mule to her new home on her wedding day. The men later said the cloth was placed over her head so she would not be able to find her way back home, should she want to escape the marriage.

Asia, 14, Yemen. Asia washes her newborn at home in Hajjah while her 2-year-old daughter plays. Asia is still bleeding and ill from childbirth, yet has no knowledge of how to care for herself or access to maternal health care.

Mejgon, 16, Afghanistan. Mejgon weeps in the arms of her case worker near fellow residents at an NGO shelter run by Afghan women in Herat, Afghanistan. Mejgon’s father sold her at the age of 11 to a 60-year-old man for two boxes of heroin.

Bibi Aisha, 19, Afghanistan. In a practice known as “baad,” Bibi Aisha’s father promised her to a Taliban fighter when she was 6 years old as compensation for a killing that a member of her family had committed. She was married at 16 and subjected to constant abuse. At 18, she fled the abuse but was caught by police, jailed and then returned to her family. Her father-in-law, husband and three other family members took her into the mountains, cut off her nose and her ears, and left her to die. “I was a woman exchanged for someone else’s wrongdoing. [My new husband] was looking for an excuse to beat me.”

Jamila, 15, Afghanistan. Kandahar policewoman Malalai Kakar arrests a man who repeatedly stabbed his wife, 15 and mother of two children, for disobeying him. When asked what would happen to the husband for this crime, “Nothing,” Kakar said. “Men are kings here.” Kakar was later killed by the Taliban.

China, 18, Ethiopia. A young sex worker named China sits stunned after being beat up by a client. Many of the girls who run away from child marriages end up trafficked to brothels where they often face intense violence.

Maya and Kishore pose for a wedding photo in their new home.

Nujood, 12, Yemen. Nujood Ali, two years after her porce from her husband, who was more than 20 years her senior. Nujood’s story sent shock waves around the country and caused parliament to consider a bill writing a minimum marriage age into law. The bill is still pending. “Don’t let your children get married. You’ll spoil their educations, and you’ll spoil their childhoods [if] you let them get married so young.”

Your boss consistently asks you at the last minute to come into work on the weekend. You say “yes” every time even though you have family plans. You stew with resentment as you pore over TPS reports on a Saturday.

You order an expensive steak at a restaurant, but when the waiter brings it to you it’s way over-cooked. When he asks, “How is everything?” you respond, “Fine,” while you glumly saw your charred hunk of meat.

You want to take a jiu-jitsu class, but you don’t think your wife will be too happy with you spending an hour or two every week away from your family, so don’t you even mention the idea to her.

Your neighbor lets his dogs bark all night, and it’s keeping you from sleep. Instead of talking to him about it, you bad-mouth him to your friends on Facebook.

At first blush, Nice Guys seem like saints. They appear generous, flexible, and extremely polite. But if you scratch beneath the surface, you’ll often find a helpless, anxious, and resentful core. Nice Guys are often filled with anxiety because their self-worth depends on the approval of others and getting everyone to like them. They waste a lot of time trying to figure out how to say no to people and even then, often end up still saying yes, because they can’t go through with it. They don’t feel they can go after their true desires, because they’re locked into doing what others say they should do. Because “go with the flow” is their default approach to life, Nice Guys have little control over their lives and consequently feel helpless, shiftless, and stuck. They’re also typically resentful and vindictive because their unspoken needs aren’t being met and they feel like others are always taking advantage of them – even though they’re the ones who allow it to happen.

In worst-case scenarios, the Nice Guy’s pent-up resentment from being pushed around will result in unexpected outbursts of anger and violence. He’s a volcano waiting to erupt….
