Spanish artist Guillem H. Poniluppi has created a series imagining what would happen if Darth Vader and his 501st legion of Stormtroopers went up against the Queen Alien and her Xenomorphs. Spoiler: it’s pretty epic.

The illustrations depict various battles – all bloody and brutal – pitting iconic science fiction characters against each other.

“The brave soldiers of the 501st Legion: Vader’s Fist, the pride of the Empire, was fighting in the remote planet LV-426 against the Space Cockroaches,” wrote Guillem.

“Every soldier from the 501 is braver than ten of those abominable creatures. But the beasts look like they are not giving up.”

A Few Answers To Questions You Always Wondered About

What it’s like working at an animal shelter which has to put animals down?

On a daily basis, we clean up after the animals, feed them, take their pictures, vaccinate, medicate, socialize, etc. For every cute puppy or kitten we adopt out, we usually find ourselves getting two in return. Whether its a stray off the streets, or some heartless chode that decided their dog of 5+ years doesn’t “fit” with their lifestyle anymore. No matter how hard we try, we grow attached. To some, we attach more than others.

Euthanasia is a necessary evil. Space isn’t limitless, and even if it was, who would pay for all of the animals? I’m just sure our fellow Texans are salivating at the thought of increased taxes, especially for taking care of feral cats and breeds that have been labelled violent by a very ignorant public (i.e. pit-bulls).

It doesn’t matter how hard you steel yourself, or how long you’ve been doing the job. You never get used to it, and you never grow completely numb. Imagine getting 12 cats in the span of a single day, and having to pick the 12 that have to die so there is enough room to accommodate them. I’ve stopped eating for days. I’ve cried myself to sleep. I’ve grown very disgusted with my fellow man.

Now on top of all that, imagine doing the job and running into disdainful assholes every single day. People that scoff at your profession as if it’s nothing more than playing dog-catcher. Well-wishers that stand on pedestals moaning about how cruel it all is, but offering nothing more than hot air when it comes to real answers to a very real problem. My personal favorites are the “animal lovers” that fall over themselves to rescue the yorkshire terriers and miniature pinschers that occasionally trickle into the shelter, but never seem to notice the 2+ year old mutt in the adjacent cage that is just as sweet, if not more so than the other dog that has a crowd of willing adopters and a guaranteed ticket out the door. That reminds me, let us not forget about the pool of dimwits that only support no-kill shelters, and continually ask why the municipal shelter you work at isn’t no-kill as if it were as simple as flipping a fucking switch. (Protip: It’s easy to label yourself no-kill when you can pick and choose what comes in, and shut your doors on a whim)

What’s it like to be asexual?

OK, here’s how basic asexuality works for me. And it took me until 40 to figure it out. The only times I’ve wanted sex, was simply out of hope that This Would Be It, I would finally feel what other people feel!

Aaaand it never happened. Sex for me was an awkward, boring, kind of gross experience. Every single time.

And I was married and had three kids.

I faked it, EVERY TIME. Because it was always a weird, messy, body function that was slightly more pleasant than washing dishes. A chore.

I lost my virginity at 21, because I was curious. And I thought, “That’s it?”

After I divorced. I tried dating a bunch of times. I had emotional crushes on people (men and women both), but it never went sexual. No matter how much I wanted it to. I would get crushes on celebrities and fictional characters, but never pictured myself doing The Deed with them.

I would have sex with men I dated. And I always and to fake it no matter how much I liked the guy. And I really liked some of the guys an awful lot. 🙁

Whenever I did masturbate, I would picture someone who wasn’t me having things done to them that were hot. It was usually two guys, because I don’t know what it feels like to be a guy, so I can make up what it feels like.

In my “fantasy” sex mind, sex always feels like how I want it to feel. Basically just the orgasm part. And orgasms are great and all, but not nearly as important to me as it is to most people.

Ugh this is hard to explain. I once had a mad crush on a man, when I was in the Navy. He was the husband of a friend, and I just adored this guy. He was funny and awesome! I wanted to hang around him all the time. I wanted to be special to him.

It was never sexual. I just didn’t understand that at 20.

Later, in my 30s, after he divorced my then ex-friend, I had a fling with him. When he said he was attracted to me, I got really anxious. But I had my little crush. I went and visited him. We had sex and it ruined my crush. Because sex was still gross and awkward. This guy was not bad at sex. But when we became sexual, the awesome crushy friend part went away.

I’ve never fallen in love. I’ve never felt more than a crush. And to me a crush feels like the excitement you get when you get involved in a hobby or a fandom. That rush of fun and wanting to know everything.

The love I feel for my kids is entirely different. It’s so intense it almost physically hurts. And it doesn’t feel like crush/obsessive hobbies at all. It’s a need. It’s this protectiveness. This wanting to make the world perfect for them. It’s caring about everything. How they feel, what they want, what makes them happy. What’s best for them even if it hurts me. They’re EVERYTHING. When I hold my kids, I feel warm and cuddly and that pang in my chest. I feel what they feel. I try to see everything from their POV. I want to kiss all the ouchies and makes everything better. My kids are teenagers now. I still feel that intense protectiveness and delight. And fear. And hope.

Love should be like that, I assume. Different, of course, but with that same forever feeling.

Here’s my best analogy:

Sex is like beer to me. I don’t like beer. I want to like beer. It looks awesome. Especially all icy on a hot day. I like the idea of a good beer. I appreciate the description of a high quality beer.

But it all tastes bad to me. I can make myself drink it. If I’m drunk I don’t even taste it. But it all tastes bad in the same way, and I can’t tell good from bad.

I can pretend in my head that beer tastes like hard cider or my some awesome carbonated juice. But actual beer is bitter and horrible.

So, actual sex and actual beer are two things I never want. No matter who talented the lover, or how finely crafted the brew. It makes me sad, actually.

So that’s asexuality for me. And 20 years of trying didn’t fix it.

Does that make any sense?

What’s It Like To Be A Cam Girl?

I’ve worked as a camgirl for just under a year and by the end of it I was a mess. I was self-obsessed, massive self-esteem issues, and branching out into more explicit and risky acts to try and maintain my userbase.

You get zero respect from your ‘fans’ who just view you as something to be bought. You’re literally showing that women and their sexuality just has a price tag.

Worst of is that I didn’t really need to do it, I certainly didn’t save that money and just wasted it on drinks and drugs, but I just wanted to party and feel like a rockstar. The job I worked alongside my degree wasn’t particularly engaging and I felt like I was better than that. I’m sexy, young, and smart! I deserve more! So I started doing cam work. Because everyone knows how much you can make!

I felt like I was making every person that connected dance to my strings and that I was in control. I had power. People wanted to see me and would pay me to show them more. They’d beg, plead, and sometimes even demand and it was all down to me.

Honestly I’m glad I got out and I feel so sorry for girls in their late teens/early 20s getting into it think that they’re empowered by showing their bodies online. That they’re taking charge of themselves because they’re strong and they’re able to choose who and where to do so. That they’re safe from sexual assault as they’re not working a stage and it’s from the comfort of their own home.

I don’t doubt that there are people who are legitimately happy with themselves, without a shred of doubt, but I ended up networking with a lot of girls in a similar position to me. We talked to one another in group chats/facebook/whatsapp and became friends. What I thought were ‘real friends’ but it just turns out it was an echo-chamber to try and keep ourselves all sane. That we were doing the right thing. That men are pigs and we were above them. That none of us ‘needed’ to do this but did it for the fun, the thrills, for women everywhere who didn’t have this freedom!

But then you think to the times you degrade yourself or jump to their commands to get that tip, to earn a little more, to fund that party you want to hit up this weekend. To buy this dress. To get those shoes. To cover your rent because you blew way too much last night.

Suddenly you realise you’re in a lifestyle you don’t want, you find it hard to maintain real relationships because most guys don’t have any interest in a girl that’s so ‘easy’ despite the fact you’ve not actually had sex in close to a year. That people don’t value you as much because something half the population give away for love or passion alone you give away for some cold hard cash. Despite the fact it’s all through a screen you’re essentially a prostitute lite, worse than a call girl, and no better than a whore on the corner.

The worst of it though? Other women who wouldn’t dream of doing this, for whatever reason they want to throw out, call you a hero. A champion of feminism! Taking control of your body, your life, and being who you want to be. Not giving a fuck about men and just using them like the animals they are!

They don’t consider the effect it can have on your mental state being bombarded by every level of sexual perversion available.  By having men label you, demand you dance to their wallet, and sate their lust.

You ever seen a camgirl break down? It’s not pretty but it’s easy to find because people always tend to be recording. Is your show that good? Well it could end up on pornhub or another massive site, it could end up circulating your class because you should never underestimate just how much porn young teenage guys can consume. Even if you take steps to hide it unless you’re really buying into the idea it’s empowering it’ll be something you’ve got to carry around with you for quite some time.

It was infrequent that I was recognised, but some people did, and for the most part it was just an awkward phase where I then had to find somewhere else to work. Now and again though some men would think it’s leverage to be exploited, to use against me, and to try and coerce me. Never stupid enough to message me but with the scary confrontations after a shift or after class which may seem friendly enough from a glance but have you utterly terrified down to the soles of your shoes. Sometimes they’ll find out some more information about you, through something in the background, through something you say…by some tiny clue. Then they’ll find out more and more til they message friends, family, and let them know your little secret.

Money isn’t everything, you only have one life, and I feel that I’m constantly going to have this looming over my life. I don’t doubt that someone here is going to tell me ‘It’ll be fine, don’t worry, no one can judge you but yourself’ but at the end of the day unless you go through this or worse yourself you’ve just got no idea.

What was it like to liberate the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp?

I was a translator at the front. Our forces had taken half of Poland. At New Years we reached Krakow. I interrogated German and Italian officers there, because I knew Italian and Polish besides Russian. I’ve learnt that from my mother and during school. We then got the order to push beyond the town and into the concentration camp Auschwitz. When our tanks reached the front gates of the KZ [KZ = Konzentrationslager; German for concentration camp] early on the 27th of january 1945, the guards had already caught wind and had fled. Only some remained, others had died by their own hands.

Nobody resisted. The front gate of the camp was locked. Our tank broke through. One truck after the other, full of soldiers, drove onto the camp site. Our soliders disembarked, disarmed the remaining guards of the camp and arrested them.

So we drove up to the extermination camp Birkenau.

The actual camp appeared like an untidy slaughterhouse. A pungent smell hung heavily in the air… The further we walked into the site, the stronger the smell of burnt flesh became, and dirty-black ash rained down on us from the heavens, darkening the snow… Innumerable exhausted, wretched figures with shrunken faces and bald heads were standing outside of the barracks. They didn’t know that we were coming. The surprise made many of them faint. A picture that would make everyone wither away who saw it. The misery was horrifying. The ovens [of the crematoria] were still hot and some were still blazing fiercely when we approached… We were standing in a circle, everyone was silent. From the barracks more and more hungry children were emerging, reduced to skeletons and enveloped in rags. Like ants they assembled in large groups, making noise as if they were in a large school yard. With arms extended, they were waiting, begging and screaming for bread. They were whining out of despair and wiping away their tears… Only death reigned here. It smelled of it.

Knowing the Red Army was closing in, the SS gave the boilermen (?) [people operating the ovens] the order, to throw the prisoners, who were already emaciated to the point of looking like skeleton, into the crematorium alive. They wanted to get rid of the sick and weakened to cover up their tracks as fast as possible.

The boilermen looked surprised to see us officers and soldiers. They were strong people, mostly Kapos [prisoners forced to work in the camps]. They greeted us with shy smiles on their faces, a mix of happiness and fear. Like on command, they threw away their poker. With us, they talked freely. Angry words about Hitler were spoken. I still remember an old boilermen stammer “Thank you”. “Thank you, friend. May I call you [the Russians] friends?”.

One of them, a Ukrainian, I asked: “Why did you do that?” and pointed towards the ovens. Without blinking he replied: “They didn’t ask if I wanted to. No, I didn’t want to. But better be the guy working the oven, then be the one burning. That’s why I did it.” I was speechless, could just shake my head. “Why aren’t the other ovens burning? There’s no smoke coming up the chimney”, I asked the guy. “Deconstructed”, he said.

Caught in our own thoughts, everyone just stood around. Nobody cared about the burning ovens. “Stop this. Out! All of you!”, the commanding officer Sergejew shouted. Outside, he was shaking and said with a stuttering voice: “How can this be in the midst of the 20th century! I can’t comprehend this. If there’d be a god, maybe he could explain how this all came to be.”

We visited the barracks and couldn’t believe our own eyes. Naked and groaning people, hardly looking like humans, were laying on straw bags. I touched one of the people laying there. He didn’t move. He wasn’t alive anymore.

In another barrack, a woman was dying. I asked if someone from her family was also in the camp. She said yes. Via speakers we tried to find her relatives and reunited the family. Shortly after, the woman died, although our doctors tried to save her.

After that we concentrated on the camp headquarters. In the hallway towards the office of the camp management I found a paper pinned to the wall which concerned me, too, since I’m slav. It said something along the lines of “Germans! We are the masters. Our interests are the only that matter. The reproduction of the slav people is not desired. Childlessness and abortian are to be encouraged. Education of slav children is unnecessary. If they can count up to 100, that’s sufficient. Those who can’t work, shall die.”

I translated the text for the others who just shook their heads. One teared it down. The offices were empty and chaotic so we went outside.

In the meantime our soldiers had gathered the female guards and brought them to us. “Should we…?”, asked a Corporal. “No, don’t do anything stupid”, the officer replied. “This is to be decided by the Ordnungstruppe” [something like ‘commanding unit’ or ‘military police’ perhaps; definitely a higher authority; can’t find a solid translation;].

“What does she have in her bag”, I asked another woman, since I saw how filled her bag was. A soldier grabbed into the bag. It was a brochure. The headline was “About the law to defend the hereditary health of the German people”. I took it, read some pages. Proof of being aryan, marriage prohibition, anglo-jewish plague … I took note of it and was shocked. People are still carrying these with them! [Nikolai Politanow is suprised that these people still carry things that will be used as evidence against them.]

“Are you all Aryan women?”, I asked. They give me a cold look. “I don’t know”, one of them replied. We laughed. “Where are the camp doctors?”, I asked. “Not here, ran off”. “And the male prisoners, where are they? I haven’t seen a single man. What is this all about?”. “A week ago they’ve been escorted out of the camp. Probably relocated to Majdanek or Treblinka”, she replied. I tore the brochure into pieces and threw it onto the piles of garbage.

Until evening, many reporters had arrived. Nonstop buzzing and flashing cameras everywhere inside and ouside the barracks. We had to learn one step after the other that Auschwitz was a central selection camp. Jewish people were selected for forced labour or death in the gas chambers. The immediate extermination by jews who were unable to work was expressly insisted upon.

The field kitchens arrived soon. Nearly at the same time, the Ordnungstruppe and surprisingly high ranking officers from the staff of Rokossowski and Konjew showed up. Medics distributed sheets and clothing to the prisoners. To prevent the prisoners from eating snow, soldiers distributed tea and bread to the nearly starved skeletons. In the meantime, military trucks had arrived. Around midnight, all prisoners were taken out of the camp. Those still able to walk had no patience to wait and had already taken off by foot towards Sosnowitz. The only remaining people were Kapos and guards. Those were immediatly ordered to dig up mass graves outside the camp and to bury the dead bodies there. Floodlights and generators had already been put in place.

The camp was now empty and it was as silent as a monastery.

How To Turn A Woman Off

While there may be many reasons why a woman might have low interest in interacting with you (the majority of which have nothing to do with you), there might be some things you are doing at the meta level that might trigger a low interest response in a woman (none of which includes you being a “loser”).

There are two common issues that Nice Guys and inexperienced daters project which women experience at a meta level. Both of these dynamics typically lead to low interest responses in women. These two issues are incongruence and anxiety.

Incongruence

Incongruence is a big issue for most men, but it is especially true for Nice Guys and inexperienced daters. Here are a few examples of incongruence.

  • When you approach a woman or hang out with a woman you like, but repress your true interest in her, you are being incongruent.

  • Whenever you seek someone else’s approval, you are being incongruent.

  • Whenever you hide your feelings, thoughts, agenda, or actions, you are being incongruent.

  • When you try to be a woman’s “friend” but you really want to fuck her, you are being incongruent.

  • When you try looking interested in what a woman is saying but are actually bored to tears, you are being incongruent.

  • Whenever you play it safe to avoid upsetting a woman, you are being incongruent.

  • Of course, when you lie, withhold information, or create any kind of false illusion, you are being incongruent.

Here is the clincher, it doesn’t matter what you are being incongruent about —you might just be holding back gas or trying not to look at a woman’s tits — most women will pick up the meta-communication.
Even if a woman isn’t consciously aware of the incongruence she is feeling, or the cause of it, she will have a negative reaction at an unconscious level.

Incongruence feels terrible to women. This is why everything I teach to both single and married men has the same core message: “Be honest and be yourself.”

Being congruent with women includes:

  • Being open, honest, and transparent

  • Setting the tone and taking the lead

  • Not seeking a woman’s approval

  • Bringing your sexual agenda

  • Turning the censor off, blurting

By being congruent, you allow a woman to decide if she likes you just as you are. You don’t give her that chance if you hide who you are from her.

When a woman experiences incongruence with a man, she won’t want to get close. In fact, she’ll want to get as far away from him as she can.

That is why I’m not a pickup guy. This is why I don’t try and turn men into“geeks with techniques” by teaching them pickup routines. While memorized pickup lines and sets may work on drunken 22-year-olds, most women see through the incongruence.

So if a woman has low interest in you, it is not because she can see through you. It is more likely because she can’t see you.

Anxiety

Anxiety is contagious. In all pack, flock, or herd type animals, anxiety is transmitted as an early warning system of potential danger. One dog anxiously barks and every other dog in the neighborhood starts barking. One bird flies out of a tree and the whole flock flies away. One cow is spooked by a snake, and the rest of the herd stampedes.

This same energetic transfer of anxiety occurs in humans as well. If one person in an emotional system is anxious, the other people in that system will experience the anxiety.

While none of us enjoy feeling anxious, women especially hate it — especially when it isn’t their own!

After 30 years as a marriage therapist, two marriages, and 9 years of conscious dating, here is the one thing I know for sure about women — they are “security seeking creatures.”

As feminist Maureen Dowd puts it, “Women are emotionally complex and physically vulnerable.” For hundreds of thousands of years, women have walked the planet feeling anxious. Evolution has wired them to look to men to provide and protect. We are their security system.

So when a man approaches a woman and he is anxious, either because of inexperience, approval seeking, or attachment to outcome, the woman picks up his anxiety. Her brain might be reading the meta-communication of the man’s body language, facial expressions, lack of eye contact, and pitch of his voice — but it is more than that. She feels his anxiety energetically. It vibrates throughout her body.

Remember, attraction for a woman is based on how a man makes her feel. If you make a woman feel anxious because you are anxious, she will want to get as far away from you as she can.

Since a woman is programmed by Mother Nature to look to a potential mate as a security system, your anxiety will immediately disqualify you. The programming of her unconscious mind screams, “If he is anxious about talking to an insecure little girl like me, how will he be powerful enough to provide for me and protect me?”

As one woman once told me, “If you can’t stand up to me, how do I know you will be able to stand up for me?”

Women want us to help them feel safe. That is why they are attracted to confident men, men who can soothe their own anxiety, and men with their nut sack intact.

Women can’t look into your soul and tell that you are a loser, but their heightened empathy and response to a meta-communication often leads to dating frustration for anxious and incongruent men.

Need new porn sites? Find hot babes with The Porn Dude!

There is just so much porn out there these days. There is everything from professional sites run by those with a good eye for anything artistic and erotic, to a guy who likes to hire local chicks to get naked in his mom’s basement and films it all with his five year old smartphone. How do you know what is what in this saturated market? One guy has thought of the perfect tool to help you. His name is The Porn Dude and he sits at his computer all day and watches porn so he can review all of the websites that are decent. It’s a lot of work, but someone has to do it, right?
The Porn Dude is different from other review sites for many reasons. First of all, he’s just a guy. It’s not some company or thing that is generated to get you to join every porn site in the world. Second of all, and perhaps the most important idea, is that The Porn Dude is a porn fan. He loves porn and hot babes on a site like ImageFap, so he’s really not put out by having to watch it all day in order to give great reviews. In addition, his genuine appreciation of the biz makes him a great candidate to make worthwhile reviews of the stuff. He knows what people want to see in a porn site and what might annoy them a bit, and he’s not afraid to put both out there.

His site kind of works like some of the social sharing sites out there, except the only one voting is The Porn Dude. He only features the best porn sites, and there are no duds in his lists, which cover a wide variety of topics from straight hardcore to taboo topics that might make you squirm in your seat a bit. Most of his readers appreciate that their time isn’t wasted by having to sift through reviews of mediocre sites, as they can just focus on the ones that are worth their time. Some of the lists on the site are short because of this, but you can bet they will lead you to the type of XXX movies that you want to watch in a quality viewing experience.

If you’re tired of typical review sites with scores and reviews of less than stellar sites, on which you have to do a lot to search through their library of every porn site in existence, then you will do well to try The Porn Dude. He tells you what to watch and if how many people have been using him for recommendations is any indication, you can trust his taste for features and his eye for where good quality fuck films and fetish fantasies can be found.

Confessions Of A Death Row Prison Guard

death row prison guard interview

What was the worst crime that someone was executed for while you were working there?

While we weren’t given any information on the inmates, sometimes certain inmates would stick out in my mind that I’d go home and find the information. The worst I found was one guy that killed a child, skinning it while it was still alive. I tried not talking to him anymore.

Have you seen the actual execution chamber and the cell they stay in the day prior to the execution? If so, could you describe some of the details as to what they looked liked, including how the witness viewing area is set up? Also, how does the process of their last few minutes alive work exactly? Does the actual execution take long?

The inmate is walked in the back door of the building. He is lead through a small office, which is set up like a medical bay. At the end of the office is the holding cell where he will spend his last hours. The execution squad, doctors, chaplain, and warden will all be in the medical office, there in front of the inmate. He is not left alone for a minute. From the medical office leads into the execution chamber. That’s where the bed is. In front of the bed is a large window, think like a stage. Behind the bed is a one way mirror. In this room is where the doctor delivers the cocktail. In the room in front of the bed is three-four rows of chairs for the witnesses. They are closed off from the execution room. There is a curtain drawn over the window while the inmate is being set up in the bed. He is given a sedative if he wants one, then they open the curtains. At this point he is strapped down and only the chaplain is in the room with him. He is offered his last words, which are played through a speaker to the viewing room. After the words the chaplain leave. The injection is delivered. He falls asleep before the lethal dose is given. Afterwards, the doctor and warden walk in. The doctor checks his vitals. Once determined dead, the warden announces the time to the viewers. The certain is closed. The body is removed by the execution squad correctional officers. He is handcuffed, as per state policy, as he is still “an inmate”. He is placed in a body bag and sent off to the GBI crime lab. An autopsy is done to make sure the doe is what killed him. The handcuffs are removed, and the body is released to the family. If no family, he is buried on state prison grounds.

Do you also have to escort the inmate in his last moments? Prepare him for his sentence? How do the inmates act on such occassions? Are they allowed to talk to you and what do they talk about?

Executions are handled by a special unit of officers called the execution squad. They are with the inmates in the last 12 hours of their life. No other correctional officer gets to interact with the inmate.

What I was part of was “death watch” which is the night prior to their execution. He didn’t talk much and kept to himself most of the night. They are allowed unlimited phone so he talked to his family for most of the time we were there.

Would you expand on what the “death watches” were?

They are placed in a cell alone located in the medical ward. Here they are watched by two guards at all times. They are allowed tv, unlimited phone, radio, cigarettes, and some food usually restricted. It’s basically a way to segregate them before being put to death.

Unlimited phone? Did any one of them try to contact their victim’s families?

If they had, the phone would have been taken away. They didn’t want that to happen. Each call was screened before being sent out.

Do they have TV while on death row or for some of them if the the first time they have seen TV in years?

Yes, color TV.  The death row inmates are treated the best. Newest stuff, best TVs, radios, cells to themselves. So they are comfortable. Think that’s what keeps them sane.

What kind of TV? Could they request specific shows, or did they just get whatever was showing?

Basic cable. They were able to request shows. I remember they always watched wrestling on Monday night. And COPS, for some reason they loved watching that show. Never understood that.

How does one get to be part of the execution squad?

Know the right people. Back then, being young and stupid, I wanted to be a part of it. Now I’m thankful I never was. I’m sure that would have fucked with my psyche more than anything else.

Do any of them try to fight their way out of it, or are they just content with it?

We did have an attempted escape. They tried to tunnel out the back where the pipes and stuff run. They made it to the final exterior door before they were caught.

Death row inmates though were usually the best behaved inmates in the prison. They were the most secured too though so it’s not likely they would have been able to attempt anything should they have tried.

Have you ever had a death row inmate commit suicide before his execution date?

The way execution is handled is that the governor signs the execution warrant. It is given to the warden. The warden decides when the execution will take place (usually days later). The death row inmate is immediately placed under “death watch” prior to his execution. Here they are by themselves and watched by two guards at all times. The day of the execution they are placed in a cell beside the execution chamber where they are watched by four “execution squad” members at all times. Basically, they aren’t given a chance to kill themselves. At that moment, the state is determined to be the one to handle his death.

When an inmate is given their injection, what people are watching? Just the guards? Are the inmate’s family allowed to watch?

Inmate’s family (usually doesn’t show), the victim’s family, one local media from the county the crime happened in(must be in attendance to witness and confirm), and the local sheriff of the county the crime happened in is invited.

Does the victim’s family usually show from your experience?

Yes, there is usually at least one victim family there. Guess they see it as some type of closure.

Did most of them turn to religion towards the end?

Yes, nearly every one of them in there held on to religion. I think it was a great coping mechanism for them. It gave them a chance at peace for what they had done I guess.

What about people who were not religious to begin with? Did a lot of people seem to “find Jesus” right near the end?

Absolutely. As I mentioned earlier I think it was a coping mechanism. Made everything just a little better. They believed that they were forgiven and would get a chance in heaven. Gave them something to look forward to since they knew death was approaching.

Saddest thing you’ve ever witnessed?

I heard a rape I couldn’t do anything about. This was when I was working in the larger cell house with around 260 inamates. I heard the screaming coming from one of the cells but couldn’t find it in time. When I finally did I knew something had happened but the inmate wouldn’t talk.

Were you armed? And were others with you?

We were not given anything at all to protect ourselves. Still today they don’t have any weapons, not even OC spray. The idea of that is that the inmates could (and very easily because of being outnumbered) get it and use it as an offense.

Did you guys have much hand to hand combat training?

Very little. COs are very under trained, under staffed, and no weapons. I still have great respect for correctional officers.

What were some of the more unique or interesting last meal requests that you know about?

The prison actually had a set cost. I believe it was $60. Speaking to veteran guards there the request was usually fast food followed by ice cream. They say you don’t realize how much you miss ice cream until you absolutely can’t get it anymore.

Was there ever anyone who was allergic to peanuts or shellfish and ordered it for their last meal to try and commit suicide from it

The doctors are well aware of their allergens and had to approve their last meal before it was delivered. They gotta be smarter than that.

Anything paranormal happen during your time?

Absolutely. I’ve seen “inmates” outside of their cell. Heard officer keys at night when there was no one but me. Had a friend working a tower that saw the old school inmates with the black and white stripped uniforms and old school prison guard as they were cleaning up the side of the road next to the tower. Didn’t believe in paranormal stuff prior to working there, but afterwards I’m convinced there is something there.

Elaborate on your experiences seeing “inmates” outside of their cell?

Saw figures standing at the end of ranges and when I got to where they were there would be nothing there. It was impossible for an actual inmate to get out, and if he was out and standing there, it would have been impossible to get back in. Sometimes other inmates would call me down because they had someone standing in front of their cell. Once one asked me why I came back to his cell after a short period. I hadn’t been there in over an hour. He says an officer was just standing in front of his cell 5 minutes prior.

What are your opinions of the death penalty?

I have mixed emotions about it. Part of me supports it, as those that are on death row deserve their punishment. The other part has that worry that they have the chance of being innocent. Ultimately, I’d rather every man be allowed to live then one innocent man being put to death.

Was there anyone on death row that you thought was truly innocent?

We aren’t given any information on the inmates we are watching. We have to do our own investigating through media to figure out what they are in there for. With minimum contact with the inmates and no other information to go off of, you don’t really think about it. They didn’t talk about the reason they were there.

Don’t think about them, or try not to think about them?

I just treated everyone the same. Made it easier to deal with people if I didn’t know what they were in there for.

Have you ever really wanted to know what someone was in for?

It didn’t happen much, but there were just some inmates that were super creepy and I was just curious of what they did. Those are usually the only ones I looked up myself.

Have you ever gotten to know any of the inmates before they were put to death? And did you feel bad for any of them?

Never got to know any of them personally. We were allowed minimum contact with death row inmates. During the hourly checks we were separated from them by another cage whereas we walked down a sectioned off alleyway looking into the cells. I do remember one guy who had been on death row for 24 years. I was 18 at the time. It was fascinating talking to someone who had been in that cellblock longer than I’ve been alive.

So why are some inmates held for so long on death row, while some so little time? Is it priority?

By their own appeals process. Lawyers find new evidence, request a new trial. That alone can take 2-3 years. The appeals process slows it down even more after the trial. One thing about the death penalty, they give the person plenty of chances to prove their innocence, especially now. Back in the day it probably wasn’t so good. Some slow it down, other accept their fate and don’t fight it.

Were any of them proud to be on death row? Or did they all seem apologetic for the crimes that got them in there?

Neither, they just seemed content. They didn’t talk about why they were there. Nearly all of them were heavy in to religion though and focused mostly on talking about that. It was a surreal feeling.

Inmate who has had the biggest impact on your life to this day? Whether or not it was a small or large change

The inmate I watched the night before he was put to death. Before leaving my shift of death watch we had to wake him up at 6am. When he awoke, as I was leaving, he told us to “have a good day”. This, even though he was going to die that night. Was a powerful thing.

..how do you respond to something like that, “you too”?

Honestly, I almost did. Was able to catch myself. Said “thanks”.

Have you ever had any crazy requests from any of the inmates?

The thing requested the most was for me to contact their family for them. It was really depressing.

What was it like going to work everyday?

It was very interesting. Dealing with people in that type of setting is an experience I’ll never forget. We were also outnumbered 300 to 1 so that lack of complete control was offsetting at times.

What was your favorite/least favorite part about your job?

I like talking to people. Talking to prisoners and learning about their life was fascinating to me. Most of them just wanted someone to talk to listen to them anyway. Least favorite was being stuck back there with them. When those gates closed behind you it was a horrible feeling because you knew if shit went down, you wasn’t getting out.

Are you the subject of a lot of hate from the inmates because you are seen as who is sentencing them because you are authority? And were you ever attacked by an inmate?

The only hate we got from inmates were those trying to establish a reputation. None of them held us personally accountable for the reason they were there. They knew we weren’t cops and we had nothing to do with their sentence. The only time we were tried up was as an attempt to gain some type of fear or control over the cellblock. That never worked though.

I was almost shanked (stabbed) by a former cop in protective custody. I let my guard down because he was a former cop, thinking he wouldn’t try to hurt me. He almost stabbed me through the meal slot. I was able to catch his arm and ended up breaking his elbow. Learned a lesson that day.

Why did he try to stab you?

He was just having a bad day. I don’t know what made him want to do it. He was in there for child molestation, guess he thought things couldn’t get any worse.

I can’t be the only one who pictures the green mile when we talk about this. Are there many similarities (realising that the old one WAS set back quite a few years) Also, were there any cruel guards?

There were guards that wanted to be cruel, but when you’re outnumbered 300 to 1, you don’t disrespect the power of the inmates. You’re in their house, they are just allowing you to survive there.

There are a few similarities, the major one being the walk to the execution chamber (the green mile). That’s still being done today here.

What was the gang culture like in there?

Everyone in there had the “gang mentality”. Respect in the prison is regarded to what we do as trust on the street. If I’m doing a business deal with you, I need you to trust that I’m good on what I say I will do for you. Respect is the same thing. If you don’t gain any respect you’re regarded as a coward, prey. It really is a dog eat dog world in a prison. You’re either a leader or you’re preyed upon.

When you watch movies about or set in prisons/death row, what parts make you complain out loud about inacuracies?

The freedom the character has. Prisons are incredibly controlling, unless you’re in a minimum security prison. The stuff I see them get away with in shows makes me laugh.

Do you feel desensitized to other real life situations as a result of working in death row or have any different outlooks on life from it?

The prison system didn’t desensitize me. If anything, it made me enjoy my freedom more. After doing that, there’s no way I’d intentionally do anything to end up in that situation.
