What Is Sleep Paralysis and why is it usually so scary?

When you fall asleep, your brain doesn’t completely turn off. In order to prevent you from acting out your dreams/thoughts while you sleep, the brain releases chemicals that suppress motor control, leaving you unable to move. This inhibition is supposed to be lifted as soon as you wake up, but sometimes it doesn’t and that’s when you get sleep paralysis.

The opposite, no inhibition while asleep, is what causes sleep walking.

It is so scary because your brain will try to come up with a reason you can’t move, and this often takes the form of some type of restraint such as a gremlin sitting on your chest. Being immobile is a big threat to your survival so it tends to cause panic.

Why are different types of alcohol (vodka, gin, whiskey, tequila, etc.) associated with different moods of intoxication (violent, mellow, happy, crazy, etc.)?

It’s because of the situations in which you drink them.

Not a lot of people sit quietly at home and sip tequila while reading a nice book – that’s more of a thing for wine or brandy, so we associate those with a quiet or a thoughtful drunk. We drink tequila at parties (or good tequila at a nice dinner or something) so we associate it with the more fun, happy drunk.

Why Do Soccer Players Dive So Much

There are three things about soccer that contribute to it being the worlds diviest sport. First, the official time is kept only by the referee on his or her watch. The ref can stop the clock at his discretion for things like injuries, etc. but it is at his discretion… so, there’s a chance that you actually will kill some time by pretending to be injured unlike football or basketball where the clock is managed by sideline officials along strict rules and visible to everyone in the stadiums. One of the reasons (at least that I’ve always heard) for soccer working this way is that if the crowd knew exactly when the game was going to end then there would be riots.

As you might imagine from the way the time is managed, the soccer ref has an enormous amount of power over the game. And unlike many other sports, he or she is pretty much alone in that power. There are two refs in hockey, three in basketball, and lots in baseball and football but only one in soccer. With one ref policing 22 players, it’s much easier to fool him.

The last factor that I think encourages diving is the usually very low scores in a soccer game. Most soccer games are decided by a goal or two. This swings the risk/reward factors way in favor of deceit. The ref in the U.S. v. Brazil game, as bad as she was, was unusual and admirable for punishing that dive with a yellow card. The in-game consequences are usually limited to some whistles4 from the crowd.

What are boogers?

Your respiratory tract makes mucus, to trap incoming debris.

For the most part, tiny cilia (think, lots of little tiny fingers) work to move this gunk to the throat where you swallow and dispose of it.

A large percentage of the mucus is made up of water, but the stuff near the opening to your nose gets a fair amount of exposure, and can lose that moisture to the air. When it does, it dries up and becomes what we commonly call a booger, and also becomes tough/impossible for the cilia to move it along.

When there is a fly in my room and it is continuously flying around in the same pattern, what is it trying to achieve?

Flies have, by human standards, virtually no brain. They are better understood as being like a tiny machine rather than a tiny thinker. So they are not “trying to achieve” anything, and are unaware of what they are doing.

Flies respond primarily to smells, and secondly to rather basic images. They seek things that smell like food, and seek to avoid getting swatted or eaten.

Why does every smartphone’s battery percentage go down much faster when it is below 15-20%?

Let’s say your phone needs 9 volts to work. It is more of a range like 7-11 volts, but let’s use 9. As the battery is being used, the voltage starts to drop. As the voltage drops, the amps increase. A smaller voltage needs more amps to produce the same amount of power that a larger voltage produces. More amps creates heat and combined with the lower voltage is now less efficient. The discharge curve gives you some idea of that drastic drop off.

How do liquid and bar soaps actually clean our hands?

Oil and water don’t mix very well. You can see this by looking at the distinctive layers in a bottle of salad dressing. The kind of dirty that tends to be the biggest pain to get rid of is oily dirty. When we get oily things on our hands, even when we rinse them with water the oily bits stay because the water can’t dissolve them and wash them away.

The teeny tiny bits (molecules) that make up soap are amphipathic. This is a technical word that means they have two parts or regions. One of those regions mixes really well with watery stuff, and one of those regions mixes really well with oily stuff. When you put soap on your hands, the part of the molecule that mixes with oily stuff flips around to face the dirtiness, and the part that mixes with watery stuff flips around to face out. Imagine you have a really big magnet, an oily mess, and a bunch of really small magnets, soap. If you throw all the little magnets at the big magnet, they’ll all flip around until they face the “right” way to stick. That’s what’s happening at a molecular level. Now the entire outside surface of the oily bits on your hands are covered in soap molecules with their oily regions facing inwards and their watery regions facing outwards. This means that the water you rinse with can grab onto those oily soapy mixtures and dissolve them to wash them away.

Why does sleeping for 8 hours feel like only 5 minutes?

Because you are not conscious. How did you feel before you were born? What was the passage of time like before you were conceived? The exact same phenomena will occur to you after your death.

How do news outlets like VICE News ensure their journalists survive when doing documentaries like The Islamic State?

They don’t always survive Many journalists died reporting and filming both the Vietnam and Iraq wars.

People like ISIS, Syrian Rebels, minors in Chile, etc… want their story told, but they know there are risks in telling their story and they may be reluctant to trust a journalist who might “misrepresent” them.

Sometimes the channels required to arrange these kinds of documentaries/interviews/exposees require a lot of “I know a guy, who knows a guy, who knows a guy whose brother could get you a meeting with [group name here]” conversations where the sources are putting themselves in danger (either with their group, or enemy groups) for the simple act of arranging a meeting. Sometimes the people actually going into the field have formed a friendship with the people they’re interviewing after months of talking; a single friend in a war torn region can literally save your life when you’re talking to people that behead journalists for propaganda purposes. Many times these journalists are putting a lot of trust in their sources. They might get out of the airport, get in a cab and stay at a safe house for a few weeks while the organization debates what to do with them.

Ultimately they’re able do these documentaries because the group they’re filming has already given them freedom to do so long before the filming takes place. There is a lot of risk and when we hear stories of journalists getting beheaded, it can sometimes be because they got into the wrong taxi on their way to meet a source that would have arranged them an interview with the very group that kills them-a large group like ISIS doesn’t know every member of its organization so saying “bob can speak for you” means fuck all when a different cell hasn’t even heard of a bob.

For groups that don’t rely on external displays, like a drug cartels, rebels and such, reporters are usually given a background check long before they come close to anybody in person, and the group will simply drop contact if they don’t like/trust the reporter.

This is where the idea of “journalistic integrity” comes in. The right to free press, in the US and other places, includes a protection of these sources, but not every outlet will protect their sources (too much anonymity can discredit a story after all), sometimes a news outlet will gain a reputation for misrepresenting a source and not be trusted by some groups. For an outlet like Vice, they’re able to get the stories they do because A: people watch vice (remember, they want their story to be told), and B: Vice’s has a reputation for not misrepresenting their sources, giving them more weight and scoring them more high profile documentaries.

In short: these groups want their story to be told, journalist will seek out members of these groups through various channels (sometimes easy, sometimes very hard and sometimes not fully legal (but the journalists may be protected depending on their country)). The documentaries might be impassive but behind the camera these journalists are usually on friendly terms with people who want us to understand them better.

Because even a group like ISIS is full of a individuals who see themselves as something more than a political affiliation. And if anybody want’s to do an interview with a terrorist group/militant group/white supremacist organization etc, etc… they better be prepared to talk to them as people first and party members second.

Why is it that men “get back to their senses” after ejaculation?

The horny feeling is controlled by your limbic system. It orders the body to redirect as much blood as it safely can to the genitals. The higher thought processes areas of your brain, such as the prefrontal cortex, have minimal supply of blood and oxygen going to it. The rest of your mind is pretty much in stasis. When you orgasm, the lmibic system releases it’s control, and blood immediately goes back to the rest of the body. You regain your higher level thought-processes and all is back to normal.
