Stray Dogs Attend Funeral Of Woman Who Spent Her Life Feeding Them

Margarita, a devoted animal lover from Merida, Yucatan, was adored for her kind nature and generosity.

Every morning, a gaggle of stray animals would appear at her front door waiting for her to feed them. She even took a bag of food with her everywhere she went in order to feed all of the stray animals she met along her way.

Margarita passed away last month after battling illness, but her kindness in life didn’t go unnoticed. Family members knew Margarita was a devoted animal lover but they were nonetheless shocked when one bird and a group of stray dogs arrived to honor Margarita at her funeral on March 15.

When a group of stray dogs attend funeral everyone sits up and takes note. When the dogs first appeared at the funeral parlor where Margarita’s body was kept, workers said they had never seen the dogs on site before. This was the first time the dogs had made an appearance, let alone attended a funeral.

While staff and family members were shocked, they allowed the dogs to come inside, realizing they were there for the same reason as all of the humans, to pay their respects. After all, Margarita held a near and dear spot in their canine hearts; she was their loyal friend for many years.

Throughout the ceremony, the dogs laid peacefully on the floor near Margarita’s casket. They even formed an orderly procession behind the hearse carrying her body before returning to the funeral home.

The dogs didn’t leave until Margarita’s body was being prepared for cremation.

Margarita’s daughter, Patricia Urrutia said, “In pain, they jumped for joy, it was wonderful.”

Patricia knows exactly why the animals miraculously showed up at her mother’s funeral, they were there to pay their respects and say goodbye to someone that had always cared for them.

10 Answers To Questions You Always Wondered About

answers to questions you always wondered about

Why is it that when we’re reading something and our minds zone out, that our eyes continue to follow the text as if we are still reading it?

There are several layers of processing going on. Reading requires input data, language processing, comprehension, and then putting all of those together. When you zone out you lose the last two, but that doesn’t necessarily cause you to change your visual field.

It’s somewhat akin to staring off into space. You’re not really paying attention to your visual field but it continues on just the same as a subconscious process.

What exactly happens to your brain when you feel mentally exhausted?

Your brain cells (neurons), just like any other cells in your body, excrete metabolic wastes. During the day (or night) when you are active and awake, the brain is slightly swollen relative to when you are sleeping and this shrinks the amount of space between the gyri and sulci (mountains and valleys) of the brain. The less space, the less efficiently the cerebrospinal fluid is circulated and cleaned. With this stagnating CSF, the metabolites being released by brain cells just hang around the cells in the brain and this affects the metabolic functions of said cells. All of this occurs until we go to sleep, where the brain shrinks and more room is made for the CSF to be circulated and the metabolites to be cleared.

What do Tibetan Buddhist monks actually do day-to-day and why are they more well known than other Buddhist monk groups?

My family is Thai Buddhist, and I was raised that way, so I can at least tell you about what it’s like for us.

The answer is, it depends. It depends on where you are, what kind of temple you’re at, if at all, and how far along you are in your, lets call it, career, as a monk.

There are a few things that are the same, for most monks. Traditionally, you wake up very early, take your offering bowl (which is one of the few possessions that you’re allowed to own) and go from house to house asking for food. Lunch is the same way. We don’t eat dinner since two meals are seen as enough to sustain you, especially since as a monk you aren’t engaged in hard labor. This is one aspect of the Middle Path, where eating too little (malnutrition) and eating too much (gluttony) are both distractions from you trying to achieve enlightenment.

The rest of your time is spent either learning the Buddha’s teachings (the Dhamma), meditating, or teaching other people Buddhism. That’s the theory, anyway. In practice, it depends.

For example, in the US, there isn’t a tradition of giving food to random monks knocking on your door. So here, the monks live at the temple and people bring the offerings to them. Every week, we’d have a ceremony where people would symbolically put food in the offering bowls, and then give money afterwards to support the temple and the monks. So, just adapting to different circumstances.

Now, about the actual studying Buddhism thing. The whole point of becoming a monk is that you are giving up the material world (wealth, physical pleasure, having kids) in order to focus on attaining enlightenment and breaking out of the cycle of reincarnation. So at the start of your life as a monk, when you’re first ordained, most of your time is going to be spent reading and memorizing the Dhamma. The Buddha never himself wrote down his teachings, so each sect has their own version of what he said, as well as their different interpretations of how to practice. For example, Thai monks are not allowed to drink alcohol, because it clouds the mind and is an earthly pleasure which is distracting you from enlightenment. Japanese Buddhist monks, though, can drink. I’m pretty sure there’s literally millions of differences like that between all the different sects, so remember that when you come across something that contradicts me, like your Indian Buddhist friend telling you I’m 100% wrong about something, that’s probably just cultural or sectarian differences.

Anyway. So, as you progress, you’ll spend less time learning the teachings and more time interpreting them. Senior monks will teach you about what a certain parable means, or the implications of one interpretation or another. You’ll still be doing a lot of meditating, at all points in your career. I would say that 4 hours per day, spread out into increments, is normal. Sometimes a lot more, if you’re in a period when you’re struggling with something, or trying for intense self improvement. Sometimes less, if you’re busy with other duties.

What other duties, you ask? Well, monks don’t get to just hole up and study. They have some things that they give back to the community. There’s rituals and ceremonies that you’ll have to perform. Weddings, funerals, births, sermons, these are all typical things that monks are expected to do. Some of them are a little weird to western standards. For example, whenever a building is being built, the owners will give an offering to the temple for some monks to come and bless it. And there’s loads of random things like that that will take up a monks time.

Remember way up at the top when I talked about where your temple was? So, in rural Thailand, in small villages, often the temple will function as a school. The children will go and, in addition to getting a religious education, they’ll learn to read and write, maybe some basic math or history too.

Why is it that before an orgasm you have a feeling willingness to do anything, but as soon as the orgasm passes you come to your “senses”

According to some studies about human psychology, our disgust response is literally reduced the hornier you are. Which makes sense. Sex isnt really the most hygienic thing in the world. But once you’re done, your disgust feelings return to normal.

answers to questions you always wondered about

Is drinking a bottle of Naked Juice as healthy as eating all of its component fruits separately?

It’s not the same. The juice most likely does not contain any fiber that you’d have consumed, had you eaten the fruit as is. Without the fiber, although the juice would contain lot of nutrients, it would still be packed with a lot of sugar (fructose) and this likely to create a glycemic response and flood your body with insulin (depending of how much you consume of course). This would be true even if you bought fresh fruits and vegetables from a farmer’s market and juice it at home. Juicing is awesome if you’re trying to kick the soda habit, but it’s not the elixir that everyone seems to think.

The only way “juice” would be the same as eating the constituent fruits if you don’t discard anything and don’t add sugar. The resulting mixture would be a smoothie and may not taste as good as juice though.

How come Chinese don’t get sick more frequently, or even start an epidemic, seeing as how they treat and handle meat?

Are you kidding me? Chinese people don’t trust food at all and have culturally ingrained habits to protect against food poisoning. To name just a couple:

  • Only eat things that are well-cooked. If it’s not piping hot from a street vendor, don’t trust it. This is also one reason steak isn’t popular in China – why are you eating partially raw meat? Doesn’t that seem like a terrible idea?

  • Don’t eat raw vegetables. People are more relaxed about this in some contexts (like various liangbang cai), but the idea of salad is still pretty out there. WTF – you’re eating leafy greens that have been near dirt and god-knows-what raw?! Do you have a death wish?

  • Only drink water that’s been boiled. This is why Chinese restaurants (read – the ones in China, not Panda Inn on State St) serve hot water. Also helps explain the popularity of tea, though baikaishui is the bare minimum. Key word: “Kai” – it’s been boiled.

  • On the kitchen prep side, you wash everything – even raw meat – before doing anything with it.

  • Scald EVERYTHING. In the old days, you would order a pot of hot water and tea and scald every dish at your table before eating in a restaurant. Now, most restaurants have plastic-wrapped dishes and utensils (ostensibly-autoclaved), or disposable goods. This also explains that extra 1 or 2 kuai fee at a restaurant – that’s what it costs to keep your dishes clean.

  • Live animals are popular. That way, 1. you know it’s fresh and 2. you control the butchering yourself.

answers to questions you always wondered about

Why is Adolf Hitler talked more about for his responsibility for the deaths of about 17 million instead of Mao Zedong, who is responsible for about 3 times as many deaths?

Two things: specificity and deliberateness. When the Final Solution was put into action at the height of WWII, it was with a view to wiping out entire classes of people – Jews, gypsies, homosexuals, and the disabled, to name a few. The Nazis undertook this work with a level of planning that was unprecedented in human history and has never been matched since. They made an earnest attempt to kill every single Jew in occupied Europe using all the techniques and technologies of the industrial age. This is why the Holocaust was such an appalling event: firstly because we attach a special significance to genocide compared to other forms of mass murder, and secondly because of what an indictment of the industrial age it was. To expand on this second point a bit, the Holocaust gave us – probably for the first time in history – an act of genocide in which the virtues of a supposedly civilised society were put to a perverted use, as tools of extermination. The Nazi regime coordinated countless soldiers, bureaucrats, engineers, scientists, doctors, politicians, and industrialists, and deliberately concentrated all of their talent and learning to destroy European Jewry.

For sheer numbers, Mao (and Stalin) put Hitler in the shade, but theirs were passive acts of mass murder, and they probably weren’t genocides. Mao starved millions in the 1960s, but the starvation wasn’t the goal – it was a simple by-product of CCP policies. Likewise, Stalin would probably be guilty of ethnic cleansing in his treatment of numerous ethnicities in the USSR, but these acts were always in service of his paranoia, and never because he made a concerted attempt to bring the state’s full industrial might to bear on a particular ethnicity.

Whether or not a certain dictator might have intended to kill so many people seems like a semantic difference, and to the victims it wouldn’t really matter. But, we differentiate between murder and manslaughter for a reason, and for the same reason we also put Adolf Hitler in a category of his own. Sheer numbers are not at issue here: what really matters to us when we compare these things is mankind’s capacity for evil, and the Nazis’ methodical genocide is a far darker reflection on our species than Mao’s criminal neglect.

answers to questions you always wondered about

Why is Google abandoning an established brand and creating a new company called Alphabet?

Imagine you are running your own lemonade business, Lemon Party, and things are going fantastic. You expand into every neighborhood in your town. You start making cookies and they take off as well, as does the on-demand delivery business for your cookies and lemonade. Lemon Party is making consistent profits every year. You control the entire cookie and lemonade business of your town.

You have enough money that you’ve been able to buy a few other companies and start some internal initiatives. Some are related to it, like your Iced Tea and Cupcakes. Others have little to do with the core lemonade-and-cookies business. A hovering skateboard, a robot that’ll do your homework, everlasting bubblegum.

Most of these new efforts are going to fail, and thats fine, but if they do succeed they’ll be really profitable. The trouble is that everyone knows Lemon Party, and people sometimes associate your hover-skateboard business with the lemonade business. If hoverskatebaords fail, it has nothing to do with the strength of the main business. Further, while you are a terrific CEO, the original Lemon Party company is pretty mature and soaks up a lot of your time in day to day meetings.

So you decide to reorganize Lemon Party into a couple separate companies. At the end of the day, you’ll sum up their revenue and costs when reporting to mom and dad. You’ll keep lemonade and cookies (and a few smaller supporting businesses, like delivery and Iced Tea) as one company, then a separate skateboard company, a separate homework robot company, etc.

If you need to layoff everyone from your skateboard business you can, and it wont affect the Lemon Party brand. You can focus more as CEO on these high-risk projects, and less on the core, profitable business that is pretty mature at this point. Reporting structures from the separate new businesses are more clear and you can evaluate each business more clearly and give it more or less resources as needed.

How long would it take a modern computer with code breaking softwear to crack the German enigma code from WW2?

You can look at http://www.enigmaathome.net/ to see some actual working examples. They decrypted 3 previously unknown Enigma messages and it took the equivalent of 7748 years, 303 days, 14 hours of PC time based on a single Athlon 3500+ PC. This was basically a brute force effort, using all the known weaknesses of the Enigma machines.

For a generic example, Wikipedia says “If the wiring is secret, the total number of possible configurations has been calculated to be around 10114 (approximately 380 bits); with known wiring and other operational constraints, this is reduced to around 1023 (76 bits).”

At 100 GFLOPS (decent modern processor), this would be about 3.17×1094 years for the more complex case (longer than the universe has existed). For the limited case where we assume we’ve captured an Enigma machine and know the wiring & limitations of the system, it’s about 3,169 years on average to brute force it. This jives fairly closely with the practical enigmaathome results above.

answers to questions you always wondered about

Why do huge brands like Coca-Cola need to spend billions on advertising?

A great source here is Naomi Klein’s No Logo.

Her point, which was one of those things that’s obvious once it’s pointed out, is that we buy images as much as products.

Look at it this way:

It’s been shown that if you add a picture of a sprig of parsley to a can of meat, people report that the meat tastes better.

Similarly, put a high price tag on a bottle of wine, and people will prefer that wine to the same wine in a generic bottle.

And if people report that it tastes better, we can’t really argue with that. They’re not deluded–if they say it tastes better, it tastes better.

So, part of the value of the can of meat comes from the meat itself, and part comes from the picture of parsley.

Part of the value of the wine comes from the wine itself–you can’t just sell vinegar for $200 and expect people to not notice–and some comes from the price tag.

In other words, the image is part of what we’re buying.

Klein’s point is that image is often a large part of what we’re buying. So it actually makes perfect sense that, back in the 1990s, Michael Jordan was paid more to lend his image to Air Jordans than the entire Vietnamese workforce was paid to make them–buyers were getting value from the image as well as the shoe.

And again, people aren’t deluded–if owning Air Jordans gets you respect on the playground, then you’re right to buy them for the image.

So advertising (unlike what many econ texts will still tell you) doesn’t remind you that you can get a Coke if you’re thirsty. At least, it doesn’t only do that. It also conveys and reinforces an image, and to some degree the image is what you’re buying.

And keeping an image in people’s mind takes a lot more work than just reminding us that a product exists. After all, what does a bunch of people singing with candles  actually have to do with the experience of drinking caffeinated sugar water?

If you don’t keep the image in people’s mind, bad things happen to your brand. We can see this with the new Australian law that cigarettes have to be sold in plain packaging (i.e., no branding). Sales have dropped, even though anyone who could buy a cig before the law can still do so. “Most of this industry is about image. It’s not about tobacco,” in the words of a law professor.

That sounds weird, and the Coca-cola company itself blundered badly in the 1980s by not realizing it. They knew that people preferred Pepsi in blind taste tests, and they changed the formula . But people didn’t just buy the taste, they bought the image–the familiar old can with the awesome lettering, the sense of tradition, the people singing with candles. There was a big outcry–far louder and more outraged than when, say, politicians take our votes away–and Coke changed the formula back. More important, they changed the can back (more or less). In my opinion, if they’d simply gradually changed the formula and not told anyone, nobody would have noticed (the American beer companies turned their beer to dishwater in the 1950s and 1960s and nobody said boo).

Sometimes I like to be like, “oh no! I can’t figure out why the DVD player isn’t registering sound! If only someone went to school for this and could fix it!” Then he gets to move some cables around and be a hero. Also he will professionally mix dumb little songs that we make up for my amusement. Is this a good use of $30k? That’s up to you to decide.

I went to Medix for medical office assisting, tuition was absurd 12000 for a 9 month course (still paying it off). I now have a government job organising home health care. Im actually going back to school this fall to a regular university for nursing because I realised that the job I currently have is the best I can get in my field, there is no lateral movement and no hope of working my way up in the field. I think these types of colleges are great for people who are looking to start a second career due to layoffs and such, but as a 23 year old it wasnt the best investment.

I have worked for the “Phoenix” for 6 years. I started as an online instructor (Business/Marketing classes). My fulltime job laid me off and I transitioned into a graduate advisor. Currently, I am an admissions advisor.

There are many reasons why “Phoenix” should be shut down.

At the admissions level, we take quantity over quality. I have an unofficial “quota” to fill. Each month, I need to admit a specific number of “students” or I will be written up.

When I admit the prospects, I need to make sure they have a GED/HS Diploma. I also need to make sure they qualify for financial aid. This next part is heresay, but my financial aid department can make anybody qualify for aid. I don’t know if they fudge income, dependants, or ethnicity, but I have seen some fucked up aid. Of course, the financial side of “Phoenix” is glossed over during admissions.

When I was an online instructor, there were times when I wanted to fail students for not fulfiling the assignment criteria. My mentor told me that nobody fails unless they stop posting to the forum, do not turn in an assignment, or fail an online test that has automatic grading (math classes). If someone turns in assignment, they automatically get a “C”. This is to prevent Phoenix students from losing their financial aid due to failing grades. Have you ever heard of someone “failing” out of Phoenix?

When the students graduate, Phoenix is supposed to help place students in a job in which their major can be used. However, since most majors include a mathematics course, Phoenix can say that call center/retail jobs count.

Graduated from Concorde with a certificate for Medical Assisting. It was a really bad idea. I needed a job quick because I’ve spent almost 2 years looking and my unemployment was about to run out. I’ve talked to one of their recruiters and they highly suggested medical assisting.

I passed every class with an A and almost had perfect attendance (I needed to be home with my son because my wife had a job interview). I started noticing it was a bad idea when they had a hard time finding an extern site for me. When they did find one it was almost 100 miles away. I told them I couldn’t do that since I took the bus. 2 months later they found another site. It was in a workers comp office. I was only there for a week before I started noticing i would only be organizing paperwork. I wasn’t doing any actual medical assisting work. Called the school and let them know the situation. They told me it was either that or the site 100 miles away. I decided to bite the bullet and stay there.

Finished everything. Was offered a job at an urgent care for $10 an hour and never bothered attending the graduation. Tried looking for other MA jobs after a few months that paid a little more and offered more hours. Nothing. After talking with my brother, which have been an EMT for almost 6 years, told me that MA jobs are mainly for women because that’s what patients prefer. Doctors rather avoid sexual harassment lawsuits from patients and hire women instead.

Now I’m stuck with an almost $20k student loan and currently making $13.50 an hour at a much better job. Fuck for-profits and I’m glad they’re slowly disappearing.

My ex co-worker graduated from Devry. She worked as an accountant/office “HR” for a small company and still does. The weird thing is that she got the job by knowing a few people so I don’t think her degree mattered.

Although the tuition was a bitch according to her. She was still paying it off the last time I saw her.

My sister in law went to Everest before it shut down, for medical assisting. She got a foot in at Kaiser and seems happy/makes pretty good money, but it bothers me because she could have taken the same curriculum at a local community college for like 1/10 the price and it would have only taken a few more months. Instead she’s going to be stuck with loans for years and years.

I graduate from DeVry in a month. Personally, I’m terrified about the future. The career services are complete shit, so I’m basically on my own trying to find somewhere to use my CIS degree. But more information about the college..

We pay full price, as part of our tuition, for a limited license to an ebook. We can also pay $10 for a printed copy of these books, in black and white, and when they send you half of your book instead of the whole thing, no one actually knows who to call. Oh, and the books are generally 3-5 years old. I recently learned a bunch of CSS stuff that, when I went online for additional help, was explained as outdated and unsupported.

I go online only. Online is deplorable; they hire part time professors, who oftem don’t give a fuck about helping you. You can call student services, but often they just ask you to talk to the professor, and say that they’re looking into it. I didn’t receive replies from a few of my professors, one of which I’ve got a second time.

Onsite it’s not so bad, because the people have to look at you. The disconnect isn’t there, because you can actually talk to their boss; online doesn’t disclose who their boss is. I’ve also recieved tons of help from the financial aid/student advisor people. They feel awful for what I’ve gone through, and have given me a bit of free money, masked as a DeVry scholarship, because they don’t know what else to do. Few others in the campus are useful.

Overall, DeVry is miserable. The only thing I’m okay with is going year round, which works better for me to get out faster. I just wish I’d get out with a job, or some assistance finding one. I don’t recommend ever going to DeVry, unless you have your stuff figured out.

I taught at a State University in California for over 30 years (now retired). During most of that time I was involved in the hiring and evaluation of part-time faculty (about 25-30/year). Applicants with “advanced degrees” from any “for-profit” institution had zero chance of being hired.

My story might be a little more rare, but I got my associate’s degree in nursing from Bryant & Stratton college in their accredited 20-month accelerated program. Passed NCLEX-RN and became a registered nurse on my first try. Got a job right away. Am working on finishing my bachelor’s of science in nursing. It’s been about one year since I graduated and I just accepted a job at one of the best hospitals in my state working on a trauma unit.

In terms of my career, I am doing quite well. HOWEVER, in terms of my debt…Bryant & Stratton was unbelievably expensive.

My wife got a culinary degree from CCA a decade ago. Within a year we had over 40k in student loan debt for a job that in the best case would pay 15 bucks an hour (she didn’t make that much coming out). Basically it was an unmitigated disaster. We shoveled money into those student loans for years and finally paid them off about 4-5 years ago. I don’t even want to think about all of the money I sent to them. She is a stay at home Mom now.

The only upside to any of this is that now our home cooked meals are seriously legit. And that is for life!

12.

I went to a for profit school on the east coast called ECPI. My tuition for an accredited Bachelor in Computer Information Systems was $55k over a 2.5 year period.

I was elligible for about $30k in financial subsidies. (grants / scholarships) during my time at school. My monthly school loan payment is around $360 a month.

I was very lucky / smart to understand early on what i was getting into at that school. I did my work and graduated with a great GPA. However about half way through I took on a tremendous amount of personal study, networking and freelance work to understand the industry i was getting into.

I was very fortunate to earn the opportunities in my internship and first place of business after school. But lots of my friends weren’t. Some even 4 years later are working call center jobs with programming degrees.

Now I work for as a programmer for a company that makes video game merchandise. Its my freaking dream job. Before this place I worked at a digital ad agency. Its been unreal.

13.

Art Institute of Pittsburgh: Online Division, and not great.

Currently $60k in debt (my wife also graduated from there, she’s $100k in debt because no one helped her where I did get help). Making $17.73 an hour as a technical writer, a position I only got by complaining my way into it. I was making $12 an hour as a production operator alongside middle school dropouts, because that’s all I could find, but I managed to get a better paying job because of skills I developed outside of college.

I blame myself, of course – I did not want to go to college at all. I went to Massachusetts College of Art out of high school and I hated everything about it so I asked my mother if I could drop out and wait on going back. She said if I did that I would never go back (probably true) so told me I could leave there if I found another school. I found this nightmare of a school and enrolled ASAP.

I honestly learned some decent stuff at the school but they don’t push you. I should have been getting Cs and Ds but I got straight As. I coasted by because I could. I screwed myself in the process – if I graduated with my “Bachelor’s” in Game Art & Design but also had a decent portfolio, I could have had a better shot at landing a job. But instead I left not much better than I came in. Then again, I also have zero interest in working in the video game industry now, so even if I did do well I would probably be searching for other options.

So now I’m just doing sort of okay, in massive debt for nothing, avoiding my student loan payments because I cannot afford them. I wouldn’t recommend any of it. If I wasn’t a coward and lazy I would have gone to a real college, gotten a real education, and been in less debt with a shot at a job with a decent salary.

The schools will screw you, but it’s your own fault in the end for doing it. I used to blame a lot of things and people but now I know it’s all on me.

14.

I went to DeVry and got a Computer Information Systems degree last decade. After graduating, I couldn’t find a job related to my major and did a number of odd jobs (all <$10/hr) for a few years before getting a Help Desk job at a healthcare organization thanks to knowing someone currently working there. I spent close to 6 years on the Help Desk (2 years taking calls, 3+ years doing procurement) before applying for an applications analyst position on the Medical Informatics side. I consider my current job fairly closely related to what I went to school for, though I am struggling to recall and apply my programming knowledge (which is what I wanted to do and why I went to DeVry in the first place).

All in all, I can’t complain. I consider myself fortunate considering that I wasn’t as good of a student as I could have been and didn’t retain much of my knowledge. Some of my classmates who were better students than me immediately got decent jobs related to their field. Others were not able to find related work.
