About a month ago ISIS captured a town in Syria famous for its classical ruins (Palmyra / Tadmur). A few days ago ISIS released a propaganda video showing them executing captured Syrian regime soldiers in a Roman Era amphitheater in the town.
The other image shows a ballet being performed at the amphitheater before the Syrian civil war began (pre-2011).

I’m old. What that means is that I’ve survived (so far) and a lot of people I’ve known and loved did not. I’ve lost friends, best friends, acquaintances, co-workers, grandparents, mom, relatives, teachers, mentors, students, neighbors, and a host of other folks. I have no children, and I can’t imagine the pain it must be to lose a child. But here’s my two cents.
I wish I could say you get used to people dying. I never did. I don’t want to. It tears a hole through me whenever somebody I love dies, no matter the circumstances. But I don’t want it to “not matter”. I don’t want it to be something that just passes. My scars are a testament to the love and the relationship that I had for and with that person. And if the scar is deep, so was the love. So be it. Scars are a testament to life. Scars are a testament that I can love deeply and live deeply and be cut, or even gorged, and that I can heal and continue to live and continue to love. And the scar tissue is stronger than the original flesh ever was. Scars are a testament to life. Scars are only ugly to people who can’t see.
As for grief, you’ll find it comes in waves. When the ship is first wrecked, you’re drowning, with wreckage all around you. Everything floating around you reminds you of the beauty and the magnificence of the ship that was, and is no more. And all you can do is float. You find some piece of the wreckage and you hang on for a while. Maybe it’s some physical thing. Maybe it’s a happy memory or a photograph. Maybe it’s a person who is also floating. For a while, all you can do is float. Stay alive.
In the beginning, the waves are 100 feet tall and crash over you without mercy. They come 10 seconds apart and don’t even give you time to catch your breath. All you can do is hang on and float. After a while, maybe weeks, maybe months, you’ll find the waves are still 100 feet tall, but they come further apart. When they come, they still crash all over you and wipe you out. But in between, you can breathe, you can function. You never know what’s going to trigger the grief. It might be a song, a picture, a street intersection, the smell of a cup of coffee. It can be just about anything…and the wave comes crashing. But in between waves, there is life.
Somewhere down the line, and it’s different for everybody, you find that the waves are only 80 feet tall. Or 50 feet tall. And while they still come, they come further apart. You can see them coming. An anniversary, a birthday, or Christmas, or landing at O’Hare. You can see it coming, for the most part, and prepare yourself. And when it washes over you, you know that somehow you will, again, come out the other side. Soaking wet, sputtering, still hanging on to some tiny piece of the wreckage, but you’ll come out.
Take it from an old guy. The waves never stop coming, and somehow you don’t really want them to. But you learn that you’ll survive them. And other waves will come. And you’ll survive them too. If you’re lucky, you’ll have lots of scars from lots of loves. And lots of shipwrecks.”

A day in the life of someone taking care of someone with Alzheimer’s
I am uploading this to help dispel the notion that Alzheimer’s disease just makes you forgetful. It is a Fatal disease that slowly kills your brain over the course of years. There is no cure or even any treatment to slow the progression of the disease. My father clings to some the sense of doing chores, but just wanders around the house constantly doing things like this. I lost my mother to cancer nearly twenty years ago, and I think this disease is far far worse. My dad served his country as a An infantryman in Vietnam and then served as a police officer in the city of Detroit for 15 years before having to retire on medical disability after his patrol car was hit by a drunk driver. He does not deserve to spend his retirement like this.

Some have called it the most brutal sporting event in the world. Once a year in the middle of Florence, rival teams duke it out in a violent, body-to-body match played on a sand-covered playing field as fans wildly cheer on their neighborhood squad.
Although the pre-game festivities are elaborate, the game itself is rather simple: players use hands, heads, and feet to get the ball over four-foot high wooden fences at either end of the field. They hurl themselves and block their opponents by punching, kicking, and wrestling them to the ground, sometimes so violently that it leads to bloodshed. There’s sand-throwing, elbowing, and choking in the 50 minutes of combat, with no substitutions and no timeouts.
Local police have had to step in to make the game less thuggish: a few years ago they barred convicted criminals and players who were considered too violent. Referees in plumed hats scramble to enforce the few rules inside the field, but their role is limited, and players pay little heed in the mayhem. One rule seems to be adhered to, however: no kicks to the head.
At the final cannon shot, players are caked in blood, sweat, and sand, their shirts ripped to shreds. The triumphant winning team takes home the prize: a much-coveted Chianina breed cow.
The players fight for the ball and try to score goals by throwing it over a narrow slit at each side
There are six linesmen and one referee that is called the master of the field, there is also one more off field judge
For 50 minutes, they battle with no breaks. Even if a player is injured and needs to leave the field the game continues and there are no substitutions
You can use martial arts but it is illegal to attack an opponent with more than one player, any violation of the rules can lead to expulsion
In the 17th century, the game popularity was waned but soon it was revived in 1930 with the final scheduled each year on the feast day of the city’s patron saint, St John the Baptist
In 1574, a fight was staged to honor Henry III of France when he stayed in Venice, he said the event was ” too small to be a real war and too cruel to be a game“
In 2007, the sport was given a ban of one year because a brawl broke out and 50 players were taken to court

I think it’s safe to say that we all know and love Jackie Chan. His work has entertained us for years. It’s difficult today to find someone that hasn’t watched films like Rush Hour, Shanghai Knights or Forbidden Kingdom but before Chan ever made it big in Hollywood, he was a star in Asia – and rightfully so.
Jackie Chan became a household name for doing things that very few other action stars did at the time; mixing action with comedy and doing all of his own stunts.
Here are ten fight scenes that helped carve his name into the record books as one of the greatest action heroes of all time.
