For anyone interested in context for this, I am on staff at the CWPC. I originally took this photo and it was shared on Facebook by one of the jury members for the competition and took off from there. This competitor was a female playing the Bartok Sonata in round 2 of the competition. She advanced to the semifinals but lost last night. She already had some cuts on her fingers that she had been bandaging before this round, and they burst open during her piece. There were also drops of blood on the ground around the piano. It took our piano technician a good 15-20 minutes to get it all cleaned up since it dripped down in between the keys as well. The most amazing part about it was that this girl continued to play as she was bleeding all over and was trying to wipe the blood off of the piano while completing the end of her piece.

Not the video but at least gives context for how intense Bartok playing is.

He let his head droop and barely dragged himself forward.

“Artax,” said Atreyu. “What’s the matter?”

“I don’t know, master. I think we should turn back. There’s no sense in all this. We’re chasing after something you only dreamed about. We won’t find anything. Maybe it’s too late even now. Maybe the Childlike Empress is already dead, and everything we’re doing is useless. Let us turn back, master.”

Atreyu was astonished. “Artax,” he said. “You’ve never spoken like this. What’s the matter? Are you sick?”

“Maybe I am,” said Artax. “With every step we take, the sadness grows in my heart. I’ve lost hope, master. And I feel so heavy, so heavy. I can’t go on!”

“But we must go on!” cried Atreyu. “Come along, Artax!” He tugged at the bridle, but Artax stood still. He had sunk in up to his belly. And he made no further effort to extricate himself. “Artax!” cried Atreyu. “You mustn’t let yourself go. Come. Pull yourself out or you’ll sink.”

“Leave me, master,” said the little horse. “I can’t make it. Go on alone. Don’t bother about me. I can’t stand the sadness anymore. I want to die!”

Desperately Atreyu pulled at the bridle, but the horse sank deeper and deeper. When only his head emerged from the black water, Atreyu took it in his arms.

“I’ll hold you, Artax,” he whispered. “I won’t let you go under.”

The little horse uttered one last soft neigh. “You can’t help me, master. It’s all over for me. Neither of us knew what we were getting into. Now we know why they are called the Swamps of Sadness. It’s the sadness that has made me so heavy. That’s why I’m sinking. There’s no help.”

“But I’m here, too,” said Atreyu, “and I don’t feel anything.”

“You’re wearing the Gem, master,” said Artax. “It protects you.”

“Then I’ll hang it around your neck!” Atreyu cried. “Maybe it will protect you too.” He started taking the chain off his neck.

“No,” the little horse whinnied. “You mustn’t do that, master. The Glory was entrusted to you, you weren’t given permission to pass it on as you see fit. You must carry on the Quest without me.”

Atreyu pressed his face into the horse’s cheek. “Artax,” he whispered. “Oh, my Artax!”

“Will you grant my last wish?” the little horse asked.

Atreyu nodded in silence.

“Then I beg you to go away. I don’t want you to see my end. Will you do me that favor?”

Slowly Atreyu arose. Half the horse’s head was already in the black water.

“Farewell, Atreyu, my master!” he said. “And thank you.”

Atreyu pressed his lips together. He couldn’t speak. Once again he nodded to Artax, then he turned away.

Why are artists now able to create “photo realistic” paintings and pencil drawing that totally blow classic painters, like Rembrandt and Da Vinci, out of the water in terms of detail and realism?

Contemporary artists have a lot of advantages over classical artists. They have a better variety of tools and media, like airbrush, and higher quality paint. They have an additional 500 years of art history to work from, during which other artists have done a lot of work and developed a lot of new techniques. Also, they have photos to work from, and aren’t constrained to live subjects. So, they can spend a lot of time looking at that reflection up close and seeing exactly what the shapes and colors are.

You learn to be shy, and later in life you can learn to be outgoing. It’s not like being tall, that you can blame on your parents for breeding and feeding you.

Why is the FF7 remake such a big deal? 

It’s not even the anticipation of the remake. It’s seeing the characters and landscapes in a graphics quality that is relevant to now. We’re taking about 18 years. The graphics at the time (especially the backgrounds) were cutting edge. The music was enough to make anyone emo at times. The story was deep and unpredictable. It was a game for isolation and getaway. Most people played alone, and got very emotionally involved with it. Photographer Guinnevere Shuster of the Humane Society of Utah came up with a fantastic idea for helping dogs get adopted: the doggy photo booth. Her photos of the dogs do a much better job at capturing their personalities than standard snapshots, and the results have been impressive: 93.26% of the dogs are now finding new homes. The photo booth-style portraits are able to show multiple facets of a dog’s personality through four pictures of each puppy. Here are some of the portraits that have been shared so far:
