Many countries believe that the rhino horn is an important ingredient for many medicines. This is false. Rhino horn has the same medicinal effect as chewing on your fingernails aka none. Vietnam, China, Thailand, and Korea are just a few of the countries with markets for horn and tusk. According to traditional Chinese texts, such as Li Shih-chen’s 1597 medical text “Pen Ts’ ao Kang Mu”, rhino horn has been used in Chinese medicine for more than 2000 and is used to treat fever, rheumatism, gout, and other disorders. It also states that the horn could also cure snakebites, hallucinations, typhoid, headaches, carbuncles, vomiting, food poisoning, and “devil possession.” (However, it is not, as commonly believed, prescribed as an aphrodisiac).
Rhino horn, is shaved or ground into a powder and dissolved in boiling water and consumed by the patient.
Rhino horn doesn’t have any medicinal benefit whatsoever, but it is a testimony to the power of tradition that millions of people believe that it does. Of course, if people want to believe in prayer, acupuncture or voodoo as a cure for what ails them, there is no reason why they shouldn’t, but if animals are being killed to provide nostrums that have been shown to be useless, then there is a very good reason to curtail the use of rhino horn. There are five species of rhinoceros, and all are in danger of being hunted to extinction for their horns. Rhinos as we know them have been around for millions of years and it is heart-breaking to realise that the world’s rhinos are being eliminated from the face of the earth in the name of medications that don’t work.
Elephants are all evolving smaller tusks due selection pressure put against the large tusked males by ivory poachers, which allows small tusked males to produce more calves.
In 2012, 668 rhinos were poached in South Africa. In the beginning of 2013, these animals were being poached at a rate of 2 per day.
Poachers are now being supplied by international criminal gangs with sophisticated equipment to track and kill rhinos. Often they use a tranquiliser gun to bring the rhino down and hack of its horn leaving the rhino to wake up and bleed to death very painfully and slowly. Poachers are also often armed with guns making them very dangerous for the anti-poaching teams who put their lives on the line to protect rhinos.
A large female Javan rhino, estimated to be between 15 and 25 years old, was shot and killed in late April 2010, and had its horn removed by a poacher. Turns out it was the country’s last. It’s the second subspecies of Javan rhino to go extinct. The third subspecies remains in Indonesia, likely confined to a single park, where as few as 35 of the critically endangered animals survive.
Gertjie was rescued from the wild on 7 May by staff at the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre (HESC) in South Africa after he was found next to his mother’s body.

We are the first intelligent animals to know that death is inevitable and that will happen to us some day. It’s a scary thought. However, death may actually be the most beautiful thing we have. Right now we believe that we have one consciousness, but we don’t. Our consciousness is incredibly complicated. The brain has multiple neuronal groups, each responsible for a small part of our whole conscious. And each of those neuronal groups are made up of billions of individual neurons. When our consciousness is being expressed, it’s actually expressed through the firing of electric current through groups of neurons, so it’s always different every fraction of the second. We are actually continuously re birthing and dying in our minds, but our brain makes it seem as though it’s one continuous entity. It’s beautiful. We are merely constructs of the mind, and the mind is constructs of biology. Biology is a construct of incredibly complex chemistry down to the molecular level, and each molecule is a construct of the most fundamental physics that govern our universe, all gaining mass through the Higgs field that runs through the entire universe.
If you really think about it, our consciousness is based on physics, therefore it is physics. And since the universe is based on physics, then basically we are the universe. Each of us is just the universe expressing itself in different forms. And we are living during a very brief moment in time where humanity is discovering this truth, and has the scientific evidence to back this fact up (the Buddhists were right all along.)
You, yourself, are the product of billions of years of evolution. You budded off your mother, who budded off hers, who budded off hers… going all the way up to the first life form that existed on this planet. All the people that exist today are part of that line of organisms that never died, all those organisms that evolved through natural selection. Each of us can be traced back to that very first life form. I honestly feel amazed every time I think about this. And honestly, we all should. Evolution is a beautiful thing. And the most amazing thing about it is that it’s our work of art… Because we are the universe. We created ourselves. When we are studying atoms, we’re only atoms studying itself. We should stand in awe at our creation and look ahead at what we can continue to create in this brief moment of time that we have in this form. It’s amazing how we are wired to appreciate ourself, an infinitesimal beauty. It’s a gift that we are giving to ourself to admire.
And the most amazing thing is that we gave ourself the gift of what we perceive as consciousness, so that we can spend time appreciating our own existence.

The babies often incur painful lesions from straining against ropes tightly cinched around their legs. It may take up to six months before they finally give up and stop struggling.
Once pulled form their mothers, baby elephants are restrained by four legs on a concrete floor in a barn for up to 23 hours a day to break their spirits and are never allowed to play outdoors. Chaining a curious and energetic baby elephant for such lengthy periods is psychologically devastating.
Baby elephants are captured rodeo-style, roped around all four legs, tethered neck-to-neck to an "anchor" elephant, and dragged from their mothers. From this point forward in their lives, every movement, every instinct, and every natural behavior is subjected to suppression and discipline at the whim of the trainer.
Initial training involves introducing baby elephants to the bullhook while taking them on short walks in the barn. They are surrounded by six or seven people and tethered neck-to-neck with an "anchor" elephant.
The Circus never reveals the violence and trauma involved in pulling baby elephants from the nurturing care of their mothers, instead claiming, "The calves let us know when they are ready to move to the next social level, usually between 18 and 22 months old, when they no longer rely on their mothers for their nutrition and start showing signs of independence."
"Then basic training is over and it’s time for full-fledged training. Full-fledged training sessions last 1 1/2 to 2 hours each, twice per day, untiil they get it right." -Sam Haddock
"During these training sessions, the baby is screaming and struggling the whole time." -Sam Haddock
"Towards the end of my career, when someone would ask me what I did for a living and I’d say that I was an elephant trainer for The Circus, the first thing they would ask is, ‘Is it true you have to beat elephants to make them perform those tricks?’ I sopped telling people what I did for a living. I was ashamed." -Sam Haddock
The Circus’s much-hyped Center for Elephant Conservation is actually a torture camp for training traumatized baby elephants to perform ridiculous tricks in the circus.
"Training techniques used by Gary Jacobson include a lot of manpower, brute force, electricity, and a savage disposition." -Sam Haddock
Baby elephants are bound with ropes and wrestled by several adult men into position.
Gary Jacobson, general manager for The Circus Bros. Center for Elephant Conservation, falsely testified in March 2009 in Federal District Court in the District of Columbia, "We use hotshots primarily for self-defense and protection," and is seen in this photograph using a hotshot on a defenseless baby elephant for training purposes.
They scream and cry and struggle as they are stretched out, slammed to the ground, gouged with bullhooks, and shocked with electric prods.
Does this look like "the animals eagerly learn to repeat their behaviors in sequence and on verbal cue… because the trainers provide the animals with a stable, rewarding environment"? That’s the bunk that The Circus would have you believe.
This barbaric and violent training process goes on in secret, out of the public’s view, completely unmonitored by any federal, state, or local law enforcement agency.
As long as elephants are used in circuses, they will be subjected to this kind of abuse.
"The bullhook is designed for one purpose and one purpose only: to inflict pain and punishment. I should know. I used to make them. I built them to where you can’t break them, no matter how hard you hit the elephant." -Sam Haddock
The Circus falsely claims, "Because the performances are based on what the animals do during play and socialization, training is simply a matter of encouraging the elephants to do what comes naturally on cue to music. We accomplish that by reinforcing their natural behaviors through repetition and reward."
They learn out of fear of punishment to lie down, sit up, stand on their head, stand on their hind legs, raise their trunk, kick a ball, and perform other often confusing "tricks" that will be incorporated into a circus routine.
The Circus falsely claims that the tricks are an extension of an elephant’s natural behavior and that they only use voice commands and rewards to get the animals to learn a set routine. But in reality, its training tools are a terrifying combination of ropes, chains, bullhooks, electrical shock devices, denial of maternal protection, and corporal punishment.
"Raising a baby elephant at The Circus is like raising a kid in jail." – Sam Haddock
Gary Jacobson is using a bullhook to keep the elephant’s trunk up.
An elephant is being trained to perform a headstand. Two handlers are using a bullhook on each hind foot while Gary Jacobson uses a bullhook to apply pressure to the back of the head. A rope is affixed to the elephant’s trunk to keep it pulled under and between the front legs.
"No one is allowed in the training area, and the training area is fenced in with solid fencing so no one can see."-Sam Haddock

This infamous ex-Bengals cheerleader, 27, who was working as a teacher at an Ohio school made every teenager’s dream come true after banging a 17-year-old student. She ended up getting arrested after hooking up with him on several occasions and fought in court. She is now in a relationship with the student, after divorcing her husband, and is set to have her own television show. America!
Arrested on the final day of school, Hope Jacoby was taken in for having a sexual relationship with a boy between 14 and 17 years old. This was confirmed once a picture of her was found on the male student’s cell phone. The 23 year old physical trainer at Tustin High School went free on bail, but was tried for oral copulation with a minor and unlawful sex with a minor.
Sussex County elementary school teacher Lindsay Massaro, 26, taught 8th grade students. She was accused of having sex with a 15 year old boy in her car and then in her bedroom after the victim’s father reported it to the authorities. The relationship was consensual. She faces parole supervision for life.
Lisa Glide was sentenced to 5 years probation and faced up to a year in prison. She had sexual intercourse with a 17 and a half year old boy twice. The boy said the following:
“I feel the entire case was blown far out of proportion and reason,” the victim wrote once he was a college sophomore. “I was the initiator of the contact, not Lisa Glide. I was clearly not a young child and Lisa Glide was not a sexual predator.”
Carrie McCandless taught cheerleading at Brighton Charter High School in Colorado. She was accused of having sexual relations with a 17 year old male student during an sleepover school camping trip. She provided the kids with alcohol and “did everything except having sex” with a male student while another male student slept nearby. She was sentenced to 45 days in jail.
25 year old Spanish teacher and former Miss Texas contestant Amy McElhenney was accused of having sex with an 18 year old male student. The age of consent in Texas is 18, but there’s a law forbidding teachers from having sexual relationships with students regardless of their age. The grand jury refused to find her guilty of an improper relationship with a student since the text messages colored their relationship as endearing and flirtatious, but she did lose her teacher credentials.
Michelle Preston, 27, of Shawnee Mission West High School, Kansas, was charged with three counts of having unlawful sexual relations between September and December 2010. She had sex with three students at her school aged 16 and 17. Naked photos of Preston – who taught psychology and geography as well as freshman cheerleading – were said to have been circulated by the students after the details of the affairs emerged.
Pamela Rogers Turner was 27 and an elementary school teacher/coach when she was arrested in February 2005 for having an ongoing relationship with a 13-year-old student. In August of 2005, she pleaded no contest to charges of sexual battery by an authority figure and was sentenced to 9 months in prison, as part of an 8 year suspended sentence for statutory rape.
In April 2006, she was arrested for turning around and doing it again! Turner was sentenced to serve the remaining seven years of her sentence in state prison, along with two more years after she pleaded guilty to sending the student naked pictures of herself which never resurfaced.
Amy Northcutt and her husband, Justin Northcutt, were arrested for sending lewd text messages to a 16-year old female student and then arranging to have group sex with her.
Florida teacher Debra Lafave had sexual intercourse and oral sex with a 14 year old student. Charged with two felonies, she served no jail time because the boy’s mother didn’t want to put her son through the emotional turmoil of seeing the trial. She now has twins and is happily married.
28 year old Heather Daughdrill had sex with a young, 13 year old boy after meeting him at a summer Bible camp. “The investigation revealed Daughdrill would engage in inappropriate sexual contact with the boy after picking him up from school without the parents’ knowledge,” the press release explains. Lewd text messages were found between her and the boy. She faces criminal charges such as sexual battery, carnal knowledge of a juvenile, kidnapping, indecent behavior with a juvenile and contributing to delinquency

Every man seeks the answer to the eternal question:
“How do I become confident?”
And for most, they’re asking the wrong question. They should be saying:
“How do I love myself more?”
Before you think I’m spouting some new age fluff, hear me out.
Confidence is not something you instantly acquire. It’s not a simple on and off switch or a few lines you can memorize. It’s not about getting laid, acting “alpha”, or anything external. It is an internal belief about yourself that must be cultivated over time. That begins with your self-esteem.
Wikipedia defines self-esteem as:
“A term used in psychology to reflect a person’s overall emotional evaluation of his or her own worth.” (Source)
In other words, do you love who you are? Do you trust in yourself? Do you prioritize your needs? Do you invest in yourself regularly? Do you respect your opinions? Are you congruent with your values and principles?
When faced with various situations in life that challenge the above, there are two paths you can take. One leads you to a life of fulfillment, the other leads to endless suffering.
Men with low self-esteem often choose the wrong path. They don’t realize how much damage they’re doing by perpetuating a cycle of frustration and unhappiness.
The cycle keeps repeating and gaining power over you. You are creating a self-fulfilling prophecy.
By taking the right path, you build self-esteem and liberate yourself.
To break the negative cycle you need to be aware of which path you’re taking every day. I’ve found that keeping a log is the best way to hold yourself accountable and start changing your habits.
Note every time you are being fake and self-sabotaging. Write down how you could have been true and self-loving instead. Use some of the common situations below as examples to apply in your life.
You see a girl you want to approach.
Wrong path: You don’t approach because you’re too afraid of getting rejected, sounding stupid, or bothering her. You get down on yourself because you never talk to women. You start thinking about how you’ll always be alone. You go home depressed and apathetic to trying again.
Right path: You start moving your legs before your brain has a chance to talk you out of it. You introduce yourself to her with your stomach in knots. Regardless of how it went, you feel amazing afterwards that you finally did it. You proved that you are resilient enough and it didn’t destroy you. You gain more motivation and confidence to do it again.
You are interested in this girl you know.
Wrong path: You want more than friendship but don’t flirt or initiate physical contact. You’re worried that she’ll think you’re a creep and tell you off. You make excuses that it’s not the right time or place. The longer you wait around, the more frustrated and resentful you become about the whole thing. You believe that she is everything and you are nothing.
Right path: You show your intentions to her because that’s how you truly feel. You feel courageous for putting everything out in the open. If she doesn’t return interest, you can be relieved to know she isn’t compatible with you. You can then move on to find someone who is. This reinforces that you value yourself and your time.
You want to build an interesting lifestyle and make friends.
Wrong path: You don’t go to local events or meet-ups because you might not “fit in”. You’re worried about being judged. You get lonely and think about how you don’t have many friends. You convince yourself that there must be something wrong with you. You continue the cycle of staying in because no one will want you around.
Right path: You go out because you want to try something fun and challenging. You remind yourself to relax and that you don’t have anything to prove. Instead, you focus on getting to know people that interest you. This puts you in a mindset of choice and abundance. You now look forward to going out because you can be yourself around people that actually matter.
For more ways to practice heading down the right path, see my post on being more assertive and getting what you want.
Recognize your natural inclination to take the path of misery. Remind yourself how going down this route is doing more harm than good. It may feel like the easy way out, but it’s destroying your self-esteem in the long run.
Every subsequent time you choose the path of self-love, you will build trust in yourself. By repeatedly making choices that are in tune with your core, you create a habit of prioritizing your happiness. Your success is then based on whether you were genuine rather than external results. This is how you achieve outcome independence and high self-esteem.
Only when you love, respect, and approve of yourself unconditionally can you become a confident man.
