Defeating The Voices Of Doubt

haters gonna hate

by Nick Notas

Everywhere around there will be someone who tells you that it can’t be done. They’ll argue that you don’t have what it takes. That you’re foolish. That you’re following “childish dreams.” Any person who’s gone after something they want or believe in has had to swash through a sea of doubt.

It’s easiest for naysayers to sit back and tell others what they can and can’t do. To spread negativity while staying safely in their comfort zone. It makes them feel good to tear others down when they aren’t the ones putting their neck on the line. In reality, they have their own goals that have dwindled into “pipe dreams” that will never get done. They haven’t accomplished theirs, so why would they encourage you to accomplish yours?

This phenomenon is so real it even has it’s own name — crab mentality. It’s much easier to try and pull someone down than to lift yourself up and join them. That takes courage.

Sometimes the loudest voice of doubt is in your own head. It’s the most powerful. It knows you. How could your own mind be wrong when it’s been with you all your life?

That would be true if the mind was infallible, but it’s not. It, too, is susceptible to mistakes, fears, and self-defeating thoughts. It wants you to do well but at the same time protects you from being hurt if you don’t reach your objective. You have to fight through that defense mechanism — success is born out of risks and failures.

If we always believed our worst critics (ourselves included), George Foreman wouldn’t have become heavyweight champion of the world at 45 years old. Stephen King would’ve never published Carrie, and we’d have missed out on countless works from brilliant authors who faced multiple rejections. Every successful person has stories of hardships and non-believers that they’ve prevailed against.

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve heard people suggest that I “give up” or “try something else” throughout my life. I know how disheartening it is to hear those words (especially from someone close), but you’ve got to trust in your abilities.

Building that self-confidence requires a game plan. Here’s my process that’s helped me get there over the years:

  1. Give yourself a chance. Even if you’re scared shietless and feel like no one’s on your side, don’t deny yourself the opportunity to grow.
  2. Whenever there’s a dream I want to make a reality, I write it down. Create a list of everything you want to do. Putting it on paper is a strong first step to bringing those goals to fruition, big or small.
  3. Choose the most attainable goal on the list and break down what you need to accomplish it. How much time will it take? What tools do you need? What will improve your chances of it happening? Write out the steps necessary to get it done.
  4. Act on your plan. Whatever you do, don’t half ass it. Sometimes we purposely underachieve to protect our ego so we can say “I wasn’t trying that hard anyway.” Give it your all until you’ve finished.
  5. Savor the triumph from completing that goal. Small wins provide substantial motivation to help you conquer the next mission.
  6. Repeat steps 1-5. With each consecutive win you will be smarter, stronger, and more powerful to take on new tasks.

Following these guidelines I’ve lost 70 pounds and kept it off for three years. I’ve competed in national gaming tournaments and overcome my shyness in talking to new people. It’s lead me to meeting the wonderful girlfriend I have today and allowed me to pursue my passion to become a dating coach. I’m not a unique case, I simply refused to give in to adversity and you can, too.

The one true way to defeat those voices is to prove it to yourself, not to anyone else. If you haven’t experienced success, what would make you believe you can? As they say, “seeing is believing” and you need those tangible victories to reinforce your confidence in yourself.

Take it step by step and you will get there. You’ll hit some roadblocks, you’ll have your failures, but if you pick yourself up and always persist, you can’t lose.

What Does It Feel Like To Be Stupid?

0

george bush

The following is a very unusual account of a true but unusual experience:

I had an arterial problem for a couple of years, which reduced blood supply to my heart and brain and depleted B vitamins from my nerves (to keep the heart in good repair). Although there is some vagueness as to the mechanisms, this made me forgetful, slow, and easily overwhelmed. In short, I felt like I was stupid compared to what I was used to, and I was.

It was frightening at first because I knew something wasn’t right but didn’t know what, and very worrying for my career because I was simply not very good any more.

However, once I got used to it and resigned myself, it was great. Even though I knew I had a worrying illness, I was happy as a pig in mud. I no longer had the arrogance of being frustrated with slow people, I abandoned many projects which reduced a lot of stress, I could enjoy films without knowing what would happen (my nickname before this used to be ‘comic book guy’ if you get the reference), and I became amazingly laid back and happy go lucky. I got on with people much better. I developed much more respect for one of my friends in particular who I always considered slow – it turned out he is much deeper than I thought, I just never had the patience to notice before. You could say I had more time to look around. The world just made more sense. The only negative, apart from struggling to perform at work, and having to write everything down, was that I no longer found sci-fi interesting – it just didn’t seem important. (I’m not joking, although it sounds like a cliché.)

Eventually after more physical and life threatening symptoms developed I got the right tests and they found my arteries were blocked up (2 out of 3 of my main coronary arteries 100% blocked – they couldn’t work out why I was alive – it later turned out that I had unusually good peripheral circulation from my intense cycling). I’ve since had stents to open up the arteries again and made a full recovery.

After a year or so I am almost as ‘clever’ as I used to be, although I tend to ignore distractions more than I used to and focus on a smaller number of projects. I’m still more laid back than I used to be though, and have more patience with people. Most people still find me more socially competent. I also enjoy sci-fi again.

So an unusual perspective, from a fairly unusual circumstance, but that’s what it feels like to be be stupid when you used to be fairly bright. In some ways it was a great learning experience, although obviously in other ways it is a life changing fact I have to live with. Not many people get to walk about in other peoples shoes, and then pick up where they left off. Plus it’s obviously nice to still be alive.

In short I would say that the frustration of dealing with slower people is worse than being one of the slower people, even if you know you are slow. Obviously most people who are relatively slow, don’t know it, but I think I’ve glimpsed how they experience the world.

Hot Babe Of The Week: Daisy

0

a gallery of pictures of hot babe DailyMsDaisy

Our Hot Babe Of The Week came a little late this week but it was well worth the wait. Her name is Daisy and she is super hot, super awesome and can hold it down and wax poetic with all the intellectuals out there. You can’t ask for much more in a woman. Do youself a favor today and check her out on her Twitter and her MFC (nsfw)

It’s 2am, you’re drunk, what is your go to food item?

I don’t drink, but if I did…probably Gatorade and some Sun Chips.

What single movie have you seen the most times?

Wayne’s World, easily over 1,000

Whats the nerdiest thing about you.?

I like to watch the 80′s cartoon series Spider-Man and Quantum Leap everyday. I feel it’s more relatable than modern television.

3 songs that are heavy rotation on your iPod?

This week? Settle Down by The 1975, Let’s Get Lost by G-Eazy, and Hold On We’re Going Home by ASTR

What is your all time favorite video game?

GTA…the very first.

Favorite book?

Sex on the Moon by Ben Mezrich

What are you currently obsessed with?

Peter Parker’s Spider Suit and Lavender Kombucha. Close tie.

Any videos on Youtube that you think everyone needs to see?

I don’t watch too many youtube videos, but when I do, I take "Pretty Girl" lessons from Karissa Pukas (satnightalrite). She not only teaches me how to put on makeup, she inspires me to live healthy and be nothing short of amazing.

If you won a $450 million dollar powerball jackpot, what is the first thing you would do?

Buy boobs. WAIT…A nice house on the beach with a library and boobs. Obviously, I donate the rest to charity. There’s too much glory in working for the things I want.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be and how would you use it?

I would fly so I could save on airfare. I would also hope I have supersonic skin and lungs so I could survive said travel. I’m not sure if would aid in fighting crime realisitically, but maybe I could hang out on the boardwalk and charge kids for a ride on my back.

What food combination should more people know about?

Goat Cheese and Beets. Oh. My. Gosh. Get in my BELLY.

What where you like in high school?

I was a loner, quiet, shy. I wasn’t popular, but was only picked on sometimes, not everyday. I didn’t have a boyfriend or hold hands with anyone until I was a Senior. My mind was always planning post-graduation adventures.

What is the most fun date you’ve ever been on?

It was the scariest and the most fun at the same time. We hiked up a mountain in the middle of the night. I reached the summit several minutes before him, and then I thought, "Gee, this would be a great place to murder someo-OH NO" and then he approached me the largest machete I have ever seen. I thought I was done for. Then as he got closer, he took my hand and led me to a place where he built a fire from scratch, no matches. He was chopping down branches the whole way up. Then he made me s’mores. It was terrifyingly awesome.

What’s the most embarassing/awkward/stupid thing you’ve done in the name of love?

I did too many of those things when I was young. I thought I was in love with everybody.

What’s the best meal you ever had?

I went to a Chef’s Dinner at a hotel once, it was a completely customized meal, so maybe it is my favorite because I know I will never have it again…but it was perfect scallop appetizer, wild mushroom risotto, cherry glazed rack of lamb (it was so perfect, I could never try it again), and blueberry tart paired with a dark blueberry wine that a vineyard made special for that night. I think about it, I dream about it, if that meal were a man, I would have laid down and made love to it.

What was the best compliment you ever received?

"Hey! You’re really funny! Like, actually funny. I’m not just saying that, I laughed really hard!" *blush*

What’s your dream job?

Own my company that does well enough to live comfortably. It’s more work, but I love setting my own rules.

What’s the simplest pleasure in life that truly gives you joy?

Foot massages. They feel like pure heaven for me, especially after a long day.

What is the best piece of life advice you have ever received?

"The world is not a wish-granting factory" – John Green

WTF People, We Need To Free Ourselves From The Shackles Of Our Slavemasters….Our Cellphones!

Why I Meditate

0
0

We live in a world where we are afraid of silence. The mind is constantly, compulsively churning, and when we encounter moments of silence we call them “awkward”; we want to fill the silence with something, anything. And the world around us is happy to oblige – we are constantly bombarded with stimuli in the form of radio, tv, video games, shopping malls, phones, computers, the Internet…

Our mind always wants more, and always needs to be doing something. As such, when you identify with your mind and your thoughts, you are constantly restless – you are uncomfortable in silence and you are bored when things aren’t happening.

The result? Stress, anxiety, unease, discontentment. The solution? Become aware of your compulsive mind, and take a few minutes every day to seek out and enjoy silence. Sit down and focus on your breath – breathe in and breathe out, and when you become aware that your mind has wandered, simply return to your breath.  This is a simple exercise that will start you down a path of seeing that you are not your mind, and you are not your thoughts. They are tools that you use, not the other way around.

pictures from inside Kink.com armory studio

For those who want a real insiders glance at the alternative fetish world that San Francisco is famous for, the historic armory is your mecca. The headquarters of Kink.com, which runs over 25 different adult sites from inside its massive interior, the armory is a sub-cultural landmark without peer on San Francisco’s dynamic sexual landscape. Once a month, they open their doors of its giant brick fortress to free public tours. No, visitors don’t get to watch any sex scenes in action. But they do get to explore the intersection of an authentically antique interior with fabricated dank, dark sets.
