Confessions Of A Prison Guard

What are most people there for?

Literally everything. Murder, drug dealers, child molesters, thieves, illegal immigrants, rapists. With the exception of terrorists, you name it, we’ve got em.

What is the one event you have witnessed or been part of that made you doubt your career path, and possibly the value of humanity?

Anything to do with child molesters. They are very narcissistic and believe in what they do. 9 out of 10 openly admit that they see nothing wrong with what they do and admit they will do it again.

Is there one situation that comes to mind that you had to deal with that made you very uncomfortable? And if there is, how did it impact you?

When I first started, there was a mentally challenged man who was in prison for sexually assaulting his room mate at the center he was at. He would frequently cover himself in feces and masturbate through the pie slot on his door and try to throw it at us. Albeit now, I am rather desensitized, but watching him shove silverware in his rectum and eat his own feces was…unsettling.

What is, in your opinion, the worst crime and/or strangest crime committed by one of the inmates?

The inmate who would ejaculate into his infant niece’s baby bottles and feed them to her with her milk.

What is the number one, WEIRDEST thing you’ve ever seen happen?

Man cutting slits into his penis to shove dominos inside to make his penis “ribbed for his pleasure”

How often does rape occur?

Not as often as you’d think. I’ve only known of 4 or so. All I have to say about that is its one thing to see rape…its another to hear it…but its a whole other thing to smell it. Yes….smell it

What kind of smell is it?

A really fat guy sweating profusely in a gym mixed with diarrhea.

When a new inmate is admitted into your prison, is he treated like a freshman entering a frat house?

Hmmm, I’d say more like lambs to the slaughter

Is it pretty much true that any smaller, younger inmate will be the “property” of someone stronger, and therefore someone like that should engage in “protective pairing?”

Smaller inmates become the soldiers of the bigger ones. RAPE doesnt happen as often as “willing” (ahem) sex does, but doing jobs for them (collecting debts, stabbing someone) keeps them safe. Jail is like chess, the kings send the pawns to the front lines first.

Could you elaborate on this “prison politics”? Is there a hierarchic structure? What kind of deals go on?

There are far more under workings than I could even begin to talk about. Lets just say that deals and the prisoners keeping to their own orders of business keep the prison running. The inmate to guard ratio there is 9 to 1. Believe me, the inmates run the jail.

Whenever I watch documentaries or read about the prison system, a general trend is the forming of cliques or prison gangs. Is there anything that is being done to prevent the forming of such cliques, such as isolation of key members (leaders, perhaps?) or something similar? Do you yourself feel that eliminating such an aspect of the prison system would lower the amount of inmate violence?

There are some inmates who actually keep the blocks running more smoothly than any guard ever could. A drug kingpin keeps one of our blocks so hush hush and quiet, you wouldn’t think you are in prison at all. His philosophy is to keep things quiet and do their dealings and not attract attention to him or his “soldiers”.

Sometimes we have to keep dangerous “leaders” in Admin Segregation because If not, there would be a lot more problems.

Have you ever seen someone get stabbed? Or worse?

Yes. A 25 year old stabbed a 41 year old man in the head with a piece of his bed frame over a game of Risk. Stabbings are rough to watch. Even after the nurses get them stable enough to move out of the block to go to the hospital, the amount of blood is always unnerving.

Have you ever been in a situation where you genuinely thought you were about to be killed?

Yes. My first year on the job i was stabbed with a number 2 pencil from behind and then the inmate tried to strangle me. I blacked out and woke up in our infirmary with scratches all over my faces and a goose egg on my head. Guards are generally left alone unless they go looking for trouble or are outright disrespectful to the inmates, and even at that, most inmates will just get into a shoving match with them or just throw a few punches and be done. Where I work it’s more of “back off and leave me alone” than “fuck the police” attitude. My incident was a very isolated one and was a first for us. I’ve seen plenty of guards get attacked because they walk in with what we call “Percey’s syndrome” (Green Mile reference). A harsh reality that a lot of new guys don’t like to admit to themselves is that the inmates run the jail, not us.

Have you ever formed any kind of relationship with any of your inmates?

We have a “boss” relationship with almost all of them. I went from being a 25 year old college grad to having to be the boss of 130 people overnight, so to speak.

Has someone asked you to do something on the outside for them unrelated to breaking a crime, or sneaking something in?

Bring drugs in or put money on their account. I’m not giving up my job for any of them though.

I have a pack of Marlboro red’s, what can I get for them?

You could get sexual services for 3 days per cigarette, from others guys though

Are there any inventive folks?

Oh yes. i like seeing the furniture they can make out of nothing but playing cards. Cigar box guitars are awesome. Newspaper crossbow was a scary find, and a mace made of window putty and number 2 pencils was very scary find.

Whats the strangest weapon you have seen in a prison?

Texas hornets. Remember folding a piece of paper and slingshoting it with a rubber band at school? Shove a staple through the paper now and dip the end in feces

Weirdest items you have found in a cell?

Used Paper-mache dildo complete with paper spikes for that “extra sensual” ribbing.

Do you have any serial killers in your prison and if so how do they behave?

A few. They are the most reclusive, scary, disturbing people Ive ever met. I’ve heard one of them speak One time and all he said was “No”

What parts of your job do you like and dislike the most? Why?

Like-Being my own boss sort of. I Run a group of 80 to 120 people every day and things work smoothly for me because I treat them with respect.

Dislike- Fighting and the cleanup afterward. Some injuries are pure nightmare fuel. The image I that disturbed me the longest was the inmate with a broom handle shoved up his ass.

Do you enjoy your job? What’s the money like?

I dislike it most days to be honest. I make 25.13 an hour and feel like i earn every penny of it, and I can humbly say there were jobs I had where i didn’t think i should make what I did.

What, if any, television show (fictional) is closest to replicating what life is like in prison?

Lockup: The Prisoners of Rikers Island, Nothing else comes close

How do you transition from prison life to home life? How do you deal with a fucked up day at work? How do you unwind when home?

Sadly alcohol. Exercising and video games also help, so do my kids

Would you say you have been mentally damaged from what you’ve seen (eg, can’t sleep, flashbacks or something)?

I have lots of nightmares.

What is to prevent retaliation directed at the guards on an inmates release (or while incarcerated). In other words, have you or any of your co-workers ever had a run in with some bad people (outside of the job) as a result of your work?

I have run in to 1 inmate outside of work and he shook my hand and thanked me for being respectable to him inside. He said that I was “honorable” and thats why I have the respect from them I do.

As a prison guard, have you ever thought that inmates may have it too easy? For example, they are given 3 meals a day and a guaranteed place to sleep with no bills. Provided education, with exercise time and jobs. Some people in this world can’t find that at all and have never committed a crime.

While I disagree with a lot of how our prison system is ran, they are still human beings. You or I could end up behind bars very easily, all it takes is one bad day. So with that said, wouldnt you want access to all those things if you were inside?

Do the so-called hotel prisons of Norway, Denmark, etc. that work hard at rehabilitation seem better than our that just make matters worse in most cases?

I think better. Locking up our problems and not dealing with them is counter productive. This country is very “prison happy”. My facility, yeah, those guys need to be there, but lower end prisons, county and private, need to stop being money grubbing entities. They treat inmates like sub-humans a lot of times and no one deserves that.

So what would you do to improve the prison system?

I really don’t know how to answer that. Um…well I guess working on the overpopulation of people in jail for petty crimes would help. Have more treatment and rehabilitation programs.

Have you had any genuine success stories, where someone has turned their life around?

Not where I work, no.

Do most inmates accept their fate and live their life as it is, or actively try to escape/plead to be let out?

They accept it. It is what it is

Do you see a clear psychological change in people from that? What it looks like in a person who has to accept their fate as an inmate?

Watching a mans psyche break is the saddest thing in the world. Most men come in proud and confident. When they lose their edge, it’s like watching a child find out their parent died. Even if I don’t care about that person, it is still sad.

Robin Williams: A True Friend

Robin Williams and Christopher Reeve were roommates at Juilliard where they studied drama and became lifelong friends.

Even before either had made it big in show business, they vowed that whoever did exceptionally well would be obligated to help the less fortunate one.

As things turned out, however, both had extremely successful careers.

But in the wake of Reeve’s crippling 1995 riding accident, Williams vowed to pick up whatever hospital costs Reeve’s insurance didn’t cover.

Eventually Williams also became deeply involved with Reeve’s foundation, The Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation (CRPF).

Williams was always by Christopher’s side throughout his incredible struggle with quadriplegia, even to the very end.

Tired of Feeling Hurt, Angry, Alone? Face Your Ego

$

by George P.H.

“Ego” is a buzzword we hear all the time, especially when talking about men. Still, few people understand what the term means and how it affects their lives.

Believe it or not, most of your negative emotions – fear, loneliness, anger, etc – come from the ego. It’s the source of all mental resistance and pain.

But much like the boogeyman in a child’s closet, the ego disappears when you turn on the lights and take a closer look at it. Let’s begin by doing just that.

What Is The Ego?

In a broad sense, the ego is your self-image; who you view yourself as. It is the voice inside saying “I am this way” and judging, comparing and analyzing everything and everyone in your life.

It is easier to feel the ego than it is to understand it logically. Definitions of the term are deliberately vague in all traditions – Buddhism, Hinduism, modern spirituality – for this reason. The best way to “get it” is through examples and self-observation.

Let’s say a man walks up to you, says you’re a jackass and walks away. You haven’t been physically hurt and your life hasn’t changed. And yet you might feel angry or upset because your self-image – your ego – has been challenged. “How dare he say that to me? I’m not a jackass!” is what you might think inside.

The ego also tells you what “should be” based on who you think you are. Imagine a girl you were planning to bring home suddenly says she’d rather eat dry paint than touch you. You might get upset, even though the only thing being attacked is your expectation of what “should have been” and the image of yourself as a guy who can get this girl.

In both scenarios, nothing really happens – and yet most people would experience great emotional pain. This is because they are deeply invested into their self-image and the expectations that come with it. When reality interferes, resistance – the source of all mental pain – enters their lives.

Ego, Resistance and Pain

Your hopes, expectations and predictions (based on past experiences) are all extensions of your self-image; who you view yourself as.

Of course, what we want and expect and what happens in reality are often two very different things. The resulting gap creates resistance.

Resistance is refusing to accept what is; struggling against it. It’s the feeling of unhappiness and discontent associated with an unsatisfactory past. It’s the anticipation of a worse – or better – future.

Here’s how resistance creates negative emotions:

  • Anxiety happens when we expect a future that we don’t want.
  • Anger happens when our self-image is aggressively challenged.
  • Jealousy happens when another person has something we feel we should have.
  • Sadness happens when we yearn for something we can’t have.
  • Heartbreak happens when we refuse to accept life without someone.

Do you see where this is going? Fundamentally, all pain comes from the resistance created by a gap between the ego’s wants and reality. If you were to accept everything that happens to you, you would only experience physical pain – e.g. from physical injury, hunger.

You Are Not Your Ego

Here’s what you must understand about your ego. It’s not you– but it wants you to think it’s you. The ego fears annihilation, and if you associate yourself with it strongly enough, you will begin to share that fear.

Imagine you approach a beautiful girl you’ve never seen before; she literally tells you to fuck off. Have you lost anything? Has the world changed in any real way? No, it hasn’t.

The only thing that got damaged is your ego with its expectations. Nothing happened to you, but your self-image is now one step closer to being destroyed.

To avoid such injuries and eventual “death,” your ego will do everything in its power to survive. It will direct you away from situations that threaten it, pull you into meaningless arguments to defend it and take over your life however it can. This is how irrational fears like “approach anxiety” and “stage fright” are born.

The ego will also try to strengthen itself as often as possible. Whenever you compare, judge and resist – whether a person, a situation or yourself – it is strengthened. You, on the other hand, are weakened and eventually must pay the price in pain.

You might think that the ego is necessary for your survival. If you don’t have a self-image, how can you have a sense of identity? If you don’t have hopes and expectations, what could possibly motivate you to do anything in life?

This couldn’t be more false. The ego is only good for creating pain. You are never more free to take action or be yourself than when you let go of your self-image and live without resistance.

Of course, it’s not enough to explain what ego is and say “it’s bad” – there’s a lot more to it. In future articles, I will share more information, strategies and tools for understanding and reversing the ego.

In the meanwhile, you can always find out more about living without pain in Eckhart Tolle’s Power Of Now or Sakyong Mipham’s Ruling Your World – two great books on the topic.

The Burning Man Experience

$

a gallery of pictures from burning man

What is Burning Man?

60,000 people get together in the desert to practice radical self-expression of whatever form (dressing as abnormally as possible, cars that are fully functional, fire-breathing dragons, large and small art installations, performing music, etc.) while also engaging in desert survival.

It’s got ten driving principles behind it, including the "gift economy", which means no cash transactions (even bartering is discouraged, no expectations when something is given to someone) except for the center camp which sells ice and coffee, which leads to radical self-reliance, meaning you’re expected to come as fully prepared as possible to take care of yourself with all needed amenities (water, food, shade, sun screen, etc.) in the extremely harsh desert climate (100+ degree weather, pretty much a constant sand storm), while other principles are communal effort and civic responsibility, so you do what you can to look after your neighbors and such. Other really important ones are the Leave-no-trace rule, meaning everything should be the way it was before you got there by the time you leave, and participation, meaning there’s no "spectators", everyone takes part in the art and expression.

On top of all that, it’s basically one of the biggest parties full of expressive, outside-of-the-norm people who take living life and everything they do very seriously. Media tends to really push the whole "hippie drug orgy" thing, but most people out there aren’t taking drugs or having sex at the festival. People tend to be open to that sort of thing, but it’s such an intense, overwhelming experience in and of itself that something like drugs or sex are kind of mundane and pointless compared to all the sights to be seen and the people to be met. There’s "theme camps" full of art devoted to whatever theme they’ve decided on, "sound camps" that are like little mini-raves in the middle of the playa with DJs playing all night, and of course Burn Night on Saturday when the effigy (the wooden "Man") goes up in flames and everyone comes together to party.

You Can’t Blame These Guys For Staring

How to Stop Being Needy

Neediness is the most misunderstood concept in dating. Everyone seems to have an opinion on what they think being needy means:

“Don’t text a girl too soon. Wait a while before you respond. Be careful of showing your interest early on — especially if she’s REALLY hot.”

But what if I told you that those actions aren’t necessarily needy?

Instead…

What if I told you that constantly worrying about whether or not you’re being needy is actually being needy?

Let’s clear up what neediness is and isn’t once and for all.

The real definition of neediness

To understand neediness in a romantic context, you must first understand self-confidence. Wikipedia defines it as:

Self-assuredness in one’s personal judgment, ability, and power.

Self-confidence means you trust in yourself and your own worth. You value your own opinion over what others think of you. You internally approve of who you are and what you do.

Therefore, someone who is not self-confident requires other sources to validate themselves. So…

Neediness means you don’t trust in yourself and your own worth. You value the opinions of others over your own. You seek external approval of who you are and what you do.

Simply put, being needy is caring more about how people perceive you rather than how you perceive yourself. Because of it, your behaviors and actions will revolve around pleasing others rather than satisfying yourself.

By this definition, it’s not about the actions you take but why you take them. The intention behind your actions is what makes you needy. Therefore, any action can be needy or self-confident depending on the mindset of where it comes from.

Why is being needy so unattractive?

Now that you know what neediness is, why is it such a turn off?

Think about it like this…

You and a woman just met. You barely know each other. She hasn’t had a chance to invest in you with her time and emotions.

You should want to get to know her, see if she’s willing to invest, and find out if she’s compatible with you. You shouldn’t need to win her over or need her approval.

Why would you? And what does that say about you?

It says that you’re desperate for attention from someone, anyone. It shows you’re obsessed with the idea of her rather than the actual person inside. Therefore, you must not have standards for yourself or many options in your life. You’re then seen as less desirable.

You’re also being dishonest. You’re always micromanaging or hiding your true opinions, wants, and desires for everyone else. You’re demonstrating that you don’t trust, value, or respect yourself. Would you trust a person like that?

Women are attracted to men who have the courage to lead and remain authentic.

Is external validation always wrong?

Gaining some validation from external sources isn’t all bad. Everyone wants to be liked or found attractive – that’s a normal human quality. If you never care about anyone else’s opinions, you may be a sociopath.

How often you seek external validation will change depending on who you’re dealing with.

It’s natural to seek some approval from people you have long-established connections with such as parents, close friends, or your significant other.

It’s not natural to seek constant approval from women you just met, have gone on a couple dates with, or haven’t even been intimate with. This includes your female friends you secretly desire.

And you especially shouldn’t seek approval from women who don’t invest in you.

I get weekly e-mails that say, “Nick, I really like this girl. But she barely responds to my texts, she’s cancelled on dates, and never commits to hanging out. How do I get her to like me without being needy?”

Every single time I want to reach through the screen and slap some sense into them. You are being the most needy motherfucker possible at that point.

This is how I'm going to start replying to those e-mails.

This is how I’m going to start replying to those e-mails.

Again, what does that say about you when you chase someone who ignores you or doesn’t value your time?

99% of the time you’re not going to convince a girl who’s uninterested to suddenly be interested. Nor should you want to.

She’s not going to say, “I haven’t given this guy the time of day and it’s so attractive that he still keeps crawling back.”

The only way to be non-needy in those situations is to walk away. Find women who interest you and who are interested in you.

How to be self-confident instead of needy

To become self-confident you must start adopting the mindset of “What do I want?” rather than “What does everyone else want?” And then repeatedly take actions that are congruent with that.

You can’t go around analyzing what every woman wants and trying to fit that mold. You will never attract the right people for you or have your needs fulfilled.

Instead, you have to think…

“What do I want to talk about despite how I may be perceived? What do I want to do in this situation? What do I want from this connection?”

This isn’t about being a dick or disrespecting others. You simply lead with your intentions and the other person decides whether or not to invest back.

Here are some examples of neediness vs self-confidence:

  • Overanalyzing if you should or shouldn’t approach a girl you find attractive. Not introducing yourself because she might think you’re creepy or will reject you immediately. Needy
  • Approaching a girl you find attractive regardless of how you think the situation may unfold or what the outcome may be. Self-Confident
  • Trying to memorize openers, lines, or routines just so you can talk to women.  Needy
  • Trying to talk to women as yourself, in the moment. Self-Confident
  • Pretending to be a friend or study buddy just to spend time with a girl you want to be romantic with. Needy
  • Willing to risk losing a girl by treating her like someone you’re interested in andexpressing your sexual intentions. Self-Confident
  • Hiding or lying about what you believe in or who you are in fear of being judged. Needy
  • Being unashamed about your opinions and all parts of your personality. Self-Confident
  • Delaying texting a girl back because you think it’ll make you look cool or like more of a “catch”. Needy
  • Delaying texting a girl back because it’s not first on your priority list or you have other things to do. Self-Confident
  • Texting a girl for weeks or months because she’s responding and you’re afraid asking her out will kill the connection. Needy
  • Texting a girl and asking her out because you want to see her. Self-Confident
  • Spending excessive money on or buying gifts for a girl you barely know so that she’ll like you. Needy
  • Paying for dinner because you genuinely enjoyed her company and liked what she had to offer. Self-Confident
  • Not going for a kiss during a date because you’re afraid she’ll reject you. Needy
  • Going for a kiss during a date even though she may not be interested. Self-Confident
  • Working on your health, lifestyle, or  social skills to impress other people. Needy
  • Working on improving yourself and building a happy life for yourself. Self-Confident
  • Seeing an attractive woman and telling yourself she’s better than you or “out of your league” before you even know her. Needy
  • Seeing an attractive women and telling yourself she’s an equal who you want to get to know. Self-Confident
  • Chasing or staying with a girl who doesn’t invest in you, doesn’t respect you, or you know isn’t the right person because you’re afraid of being alone. Needy
  • Walking away from a girl who doesn’t invest in you, doesn’t respect you, or you know isn’t the right person regardless of being alone after. Self-Confident

Getting rid of neediness does not happen overnight, nor is it easy. But it begins by deliberately filtering your decisions through “What do I want?”

You will feel more satisfied and reinforce that this is the healthiest way to live. Before you know it, taking the self-confident path will become second nature.
