I have been thoroughly desensitized by the internet. Countless videos of accidents, deaths, mutilation, severed limbs, and beheadings have numbed most of my sensitivty to human suffering. I watched the documentary The Act Of Killing last night and for the first time since my inception to the internet, I can honestly say I was visibly shaken up. The Act of Killing is a documentary based on the Indonesian genocide in 1965. The killings resulted in one of the most brutal genocide in history, with nearly a million people slaughtered within a year. If you’ve ever tried to imagine what a Nazi conquered world would be like, this documentary might be closest thing we’ll ever have to actually knowing. What we discover is that when history is written by the victors, we see something very frightening emerge: acceptance of brutality as not only necessary, but heroic. The same paramilitary death squads that carried out the assassinations are politically strong today and count with government ministers among their members. They proclaim themselves national heroes and boast loudly about their “achievements”, which include murder, torture and rape. Director Joshua Oppenheimer interviews some of these gangsters and invites them to reenact the murder scenes by adapting them to their favorite movie genres (Westerns, musicals, etc.) 24 hours later, I am still left in a state of shock and disillusionment that evil, monstorous men are able to walk the streets with their head held high. Harrowing, shocking, and at times unbearable to watch… this movie is surprisingly poetic and beautiful. There are few films out there that I’d call essential viewing, but I think this documentary is one of them. This incident isn’t just about Indonesia, but it speaks volumes about our humanity and what we humans are capable of.

Bo Jackson was not only the best player in Tecmo Super Bowl, he was the best player in any sport in any time in every single fictional and non-fictional dimension. Bo Jackson was to Tecmo Super Bowl as Shakespeare was to literature. Bo Jackson was to Tecmo Super Bowl as Mozart was to music. Bo Jackson in Tecmo Super Bowl was the epitome of what every man, woman, child dreams they could be. He would send young kids and grown men crying into shame when their defenses tried to master the Raider offense he chaired. Players using him have been able to rush for 800-900 yards per game and run all over the field on one play and run out the time of a whole quarter without being tackled. In the game Jackson is simply unstoppable. Even though Tecmo Bo, as he came to be known, had only one play designed for him, he would regularly peel off 80-yard runs. Even if the opposing player called a play designed to stop him, Jackson was able to bust through multiple defenders for a 20-yard gain. If you gave the ball to Bo Jacksonand you DID NOT score, it was a comment on your own imperfections as a human being. A buddy of mine recounted the time when his brother used Bo to blast him with 95-yard game-winning run, saying he was “helpless as Bo shed about 500 tackles at once and strolled into the end zone”….it took him many, many years to get over that one. Greatest game ever, greatest player ever.

Cat lovers, brace yourselves. The Animal Rescue League of Berks County’s is running a beautiful “Book Buddies” program, that has kids grade 1 to 8 come into the shelter to read to the cats, with organizers saying that it serves a dual purpose of soothing the cats and upping the kids’ reading levels. The program reportedly got its start after a staffer had her son practice his reading skills while spending time at the shelter. Staff members took note and like it so much that it became a regular volunteer program. Since the project was launched in August 2013, many children (including home-schooled and autistic) who participated in Book Buddies have shown significant improvements in their reading. The Berks County ARL accepts donations through their site. They are also on Facebook, Twitter,YouTube and Pinterest.

As we all know, communication is essential in society. Advancements in technology have transformed the way that we correspond with others in the modern world. Because of the constant buzz in our technological world, it’s easy to forget how important communicating face-to-face is. When conversing, it’s not only speech we verbalize that matters, but what our nonverbal gestures articulate as well.
Body language is truly a language of its own. We all have quirks and habits that are uniquely our own. What does your body language say about you? And what can you learn about others by becoming aware of what some of the signs mean?

The Reflect Project, by Trent Bell, is a series of powerful images that shows us what a group of U.S. Convicts would tell their past selves if they could turn back the hands of time. In the “Reflect” project, each inmate was first asked to pen a letter to their past selves. Bell then took their portraits and had the text of their letters edited into the images, serving as powerful testaments to their regrets, their mistakes, and their new-found wisdom.
This project makes you think about just how easy it might be to make one wrong choice that will change your life forever. Click on the picture to zoom in for gretater detail.

Listen up, cause I’ve figured out who’s been keeping you from achieving all of your goals, from realizing all of your hopes and dreams, from securing your dream job or scoring a date with that cute redhead who sits in the next cubicle over. He’s been right under your nose this whole time, holding you back from working hard, from pushing yourself to be all you can be. Are you ready?
Drumroll, please. It’s…………….YOU!
Stop blaming your life circumstances, your appearance, your height, your lack of a prep school education, your horrible dancing skills, etc., etc., etc. and stop taking responsibility for your own actions. If you’re not where you want to be in life and you’re not giving it your all, the only one you have to blame is yourself.
No one is going to push you to become better than you already are. Did anyone force Einstein to come up with the general theory of relativity or John Lennon to write brilliant pop songs? No! Guys who get things done do so by their own volition. Okay, some may have it easier than others. Some guys are born rich, handsome, famous, etc., but all of us have the potential to reach great heights if we try.
Who’s in control of your destiny? If you believe in fate and just think life’s going to work itself out for you, good luck with that. If you don’t want to end up waiting around for life to happen to you, you’ve got to take the wheel and drive.
You can either be your best ally or your own worst enemy. You can be an independent, responsible man and take action to better your situation or you can keep playing the blame game, keep procrastinating, and keep living a dull, unfulfilled life.
No one, not your dad, girlfriend, professor, boss, etc. is your keeper. If you’re not living up to your full potential, you can’t blame your manager or your well-off friend for your own lack of success. That’s the easy way out, and it’s the one that will keep you where you are.
The only one keeping you from succeeding is that dude in the mirror, that lowly bastard who isn’t doing all he can. He’s the one who’s not taking the steps to achieve your goals. He’s the one who’s skipping class, not working out, sleeping in, feeling sorry, etc.
Now that you know the culprit, what are you going to do about him? Are you going to sit back and let him win or are you going to take charge? Do you want to be looking at a sorry loser or a go-getting winner the next time you go to shave? The choice is yours alone.
You can either be the person that keeps you from succeeding or the one who propels you to success. No one else is holding you back; don’t hold yourself back either. Be the guy you want to be and the other guy won’t know what hit him.
